1IN YEAR TWO OF DARIUS THE KING IN THE MONTH <THE> SIXTH ON DAY ONE OF THE MONTH IT CAME [THE] WORD OF YAHWEH BY [THE] HAND OF HAGGAI THE PROPHET TO ZERUBBABEL [THE] SON OF SHEALTIEL [THE] GOVERNOR OF JUDAH AND TO JOSHUA [THE] SON OF JEHOZADAK THE PRIEST <THE> GREAT <TO> SAYING A Call to Rebuild the Temple (Ezra 5:1–5) 1In the second year of the reign of Darius, on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the LORD came through Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak,*NoteCloseJehozadak is a variant of Jozadak; also in verses 12 and 14; see Ezra 3:2. the high priest, stating
2THUS HE SAYS YAHWEH OF HOSTS <TO> SAYING THE PEOPLE <THE> THIS THEY HAVE SAID NOT A TIME TO COME [THE] TIME OF [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH TO BE REBUILT 2that this is what the LORD of Hosts says: “These people say, ‘The time has not yet come to rebuild the house of the LORD.’”
3AND IT CAME [THE] WORD OF YAHWEH BY [THE] HAND OF HAGGAI THE PROPHET <TO> SAYING 3Then the word of the LORD came through Haggai the prophet, saying:
4¿ [DOES] A TIME [BELONG] TO YOU YOU TO DWELL IN HOUSES YOUR COVERED AND THE HOUSE <THE> THIS [IS] DESOLATE 4“Is it a time for you yourselves to live in your paneled houses, while this house lies in ruins?”
5AND THEREFORE THUS HE SAYS YAHWEH OF HOSTS SET HEART YOUR ON WAYS YOUR 5Now this is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Consider carefully your ways.
6YOU HAVE SOWN MUCH AND YOU HAVE BROUGHT LITTLE YOU HAVE EATEN AND NOT TO SATIETY YOU HAVE DRUNK AND NOT TO BECOME DRUNK YOU HAVE DRESSED AND NOT TO BE WARM TO HIM AND THE [ONE WHO] EARNS WAGES [IS] EARNING WAGES TO A BAG PIERCED 6You have planted much but harvested little. You eat but never have enough. You drink but never have your fill. You put on clothes but never get warm You earn wages to put into a bag pierced through.”
7THUS HE SAYS YAHWEH OF HOSTS SET HEART YOUR ON WAYS YOUR 7This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Consider carefully your ways.
8GO UP THE HILL COUNTRY AND YOU WILL BRING WOOD AND REBUILD THE HOUSE SO I MAY TAKE PLEASURE IN IT SO LET ME BE HONORED HE SAYS YAHWEH 8Go up into the hills, bring down lumber, and build the house, so that I may take pleasure in it and be glorified, says the LORD.
9YOU TURNED TO LOOK TO MUCH AND THERE! <INTO> LITTLE AND YOU BROUGHT [IT] THE HOUSE AND I BLEW ON IT BECAUSE OF WHAT? [THE] UTTERANCE OF YAHWEH OF HOSTS BECAUSE OF HOUSE MY WHICH IT [IS] DESOLATE AND YOU [ARE] RUNNING EACH TO OWN HOUSE HIS 9You expected much, but behold, it amounted to little. And what you brought home, I blew away Why? declares the LORD of Hosts. Because My house still lies in ruins, while each of you is busy with his own house.
10THERE- -FORE ON YOU THEY HAVE WITHHELD [THE] HEAVENS FROM DEW AND THE LAND IT HAS WITHHELD PRODUCE ITS 10Therefore, on account of you the heavens have withheld their dew and the earth has withheld its crops.
11AND I HAVE SUMMONED A DROUGHT ON THE LAND AND ON THE MOUNTAINS AND ON THE GRAIN AND ON THE NEW WINE AND ON THE FRESH OIL AND ON [THAT] WHICH IT WILL BRING FORTH THE GROUND AND ON <THE> HUMANKIND AND ON THE LIVESTOCK AND ON ALL [THE] TOIL OF HANDS 11I have summoned a drought on the fields and on the mountains, on the grain, new wine, and oil, and on whatever the ground yields, on man and beast, and on all the labor of your hands.”
12AND HE LISTENED ZERUBBABEL [THE] SON OF SHEALTIEL AND JOSHUA [THE] SON OF JEHOZADAK THE PRIEST <THE> GREAT AND ALL [THE] REMNANT OF THE PEOPLE TO [THE] VOICE OF YAHWEH GOD THEIR AND TO [THE] WORDS OF HAGGAI THE PROPHET JUST AS HE HAD SENT HIM YAHWEH GOD THEIR AND THEY WERE AFRAID THE PEOPLE OF <THE FACE OF> YAHWEH The People Obey 12Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, as well as all the remnant of the people, obeyed the voice of the LORD their God and the words of the prophet Haggai, because the LORD their God had sent him. So the people feared the LORD.
13AND HE SAID HAGGAI [THE] MESSENGER OF YAHWEH BY [THE] MESSAGE OF YAHWEH TO THE PEOPLE <TO> SAYING I [AM] WITH YOU [THE] UTTERANCE OF YAHWEH 13Haggai, the messenger of the LORD, delivered the message of the LORD to the people: “I am with you,” declares the LORD.
14AND HE STIRRED UP YAHWEH <OBJ.> [THE] SPIRIT OF ZERUBBABEL [THE] SON OF SHEALTIEL [THE] GOVERNOR OF JUDAH AND <OBJ.> [THE] SPIRIT OF JOSHUA [THE] SON OF JEHOZADAK THE PRIEST <THE> GREAT AND <OBJ.> [THE] SPIRIT OF ALL [THE] REMNANT OF THE PEOPLE AND THEY CAME AND THEY DID WORK IN [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH OF HOSTS GOD THEIR 14So the LORD stirred the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest, as well as the spirit of all the remnant of the people. And they came and began the work on the house of the LORD of Hosts, their God,
15ON DAY TWENTY AND FOUR OF THE MONTH IN THE SIXTH [MONTH] IN YEAR TWO OF DARIUS THE KING 15on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month, in the second year of King Darius.
