15ON DAY TWENTY AND FOUR OF THE MONTH IN THE SIXTH [MONTH] IN YEAR TWO OF DARIUS THE KING 15on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month, in the second year of King Darius.
1IN THE SEVENTH [MONTH] ON [DAY] TWENTY AND ONE OF THE MONTH IT CAME [THE] WORD OF YAHWEH BY [THE] HAND OF HAGGAI THE PROPHET <TO> SAYING The Coming Glory of God’s House 1On the twenty-first day of the seventh month, the word of the LORD came through Haggai the prophet, saying:
2SAY PLEASE TO ZERUBBABEL [THE] SON OF SHEALTIEL [THE] GOVERNOR OF JUDAH AND TO JOSHUA [THE] SON OF JEHOZADAK THE PRIEST <THE> GREAT AND TO [THE] REMNANT OF THE PEOPLE <TO> SAYING 2“Speak to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak,*NoteCloseJehozadak is a variant of Jozadak; also in verse 4; see Ezra 3:2. the high priest, and also to the remnant of the people. Ask them,
3WHO? AMONG YOU [IS] THE [ONE WHO] REMAINS WHO HE SAW <OBJ.> THE HOUSE <THE> THIS IN SPLENDOR ITS <THE> FORMER AND WHAT? [ARE] YOU SEEING <OBJ.> IT NOW ¿ NOT [IS] AS IT AS NOTHING IN VIEW YOUR 3‘Who is left among you who saw this house in its former glory? How does it look to you now? Does it not appear to you like nothing in comparison?’
4AND NOW BE STRONG O ZERUBBABEL [THE] UTTERANCE OF YAHWEH AND BE STRONG O JOSHUA [THE] SON OF JEHOZADAK THE PRIEST <THE> GREAT AND BE STRONG O ALL [THE] PEOPLE OF THE LAND [THE] UTTERANCE OF YAHWEH AND WORK THAT I [AM] WITH YOU [THE] UTTERANCE OF YAHWEH OF HOSTS 4But now be strong, O Zerubbabel, declares the LORD. Be strong, O Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest. And be strong, all you people of the land, declares the LORD. Work! For I am with you, declares the LORD of Hosts.
5<OBJ.> THE WORD WHICH I CUT WITH YOU WHEN CAME OUT YOU FROM EGYPT AND SPIRIT MY [IS] STANDING IN MIDST OF YOU MAY NOT YOU BE AFRAID 5This is the promise I made to you when you came out of Egypt. And My Spirit remains among you; do not be afraid.”
6FOR THUS HE SAYS YAHWEH OF HOSTS YET ONE [TIME] [IS] A LITTLE IT AND I [AM] ABOUT TO SHAKE <OBJ.> THE HEAVENS AND <OBJ.> THE EARTH AND <OBJ.> THE SEA AND <OBJ.> THE DRY GROUND 6For this is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Once more, in a little while, I will shake the heavens and the earth,*NoteCloseCited in Hebrews 12:26 the sea and the dry land.
7AND I WILL SHAKE <OBJ.> ALL THE NATIONS AND THEY WILL COME [THE] PRECIOUS THING OF ALL THE NATIONS AND I WILL FILL <OBJ.> THE HOUSE <THE> THIS SPLENDOR HE SAYS YAHWEH OF HOSTS 7I will shake all the nations, and they will come with all their treasures, and I will fill this house with glory, says the LORD of Hosts.
8[BELONGS] TO ME THE SILVER AND [BELONGS] TO ME THE GOLD [THE] UTTERANCE OF YAHWEH OF HOSTS 8The silver is Mine, and the gold is Mine, declares the LORD of Hosts.
9GREAT IT WILL BE [THE] SPLENDOR OF THE HOUSE <THE> THIS <THE> LATTER MORE THAN THE FORMER HE SAYS YAHWEH OF HOSTS AND IN THE PLACE <THE> THIS I WILL GIVE PEACE [THE] UTTERANCE OF YAHWEH OF HOSTS 9The latter glory of this house will be greater than the former, says the LORD of Hosts. And in this place I will provide peace, declares the LORD of Hosts.”
10ON [DAY] TWENTY AND FOUR OF THE NINTH [MONTH] IN YEAR TWO OF DARIUS IT CAME [THE] WORD OF YAHWEH TO HAGGAI THE PROPHET <TO> SAYING Blessings for a Defiled People 10On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came to Haggai the prophet, saying,
11THUS HE SAYS YAHWEH OF HOSTS ASK PLEASE <OBJ.> THE PRIESTS INSTRUCTION <TO> SAYING 11“This is what the LORD of Hosts says: ‘Ask the priests for a ruling.
12THERE! HE WILL CARRY SOMEONE FLESH OF HOLINESS IN [THE] SKIRT OF GARMENT HIS AND HE WILL TOUCH WITH SKIRT HIS <TO> <THE> BREAD AND <TO> <THE> COOKED FOOD AND <TO> <THE> WINE AND <TO> OIL AND <TO> EVERY FOOD ¿ WILL IT BECOME HOLY AND THEY ANSWERED THE PRIESTS AND THEY SAID NO 12If a man carries consecrated meat in the fold of his garment, and it touches bread, stew, wine, oil, or any other food, does that item become holy?’” “No,” replied the priests.
13AND HE SAID HAGGAI IF HE WILL TOUCH A [PERSON] UNCLEAN OF A CORPSE <IN> ALL THESE [THINGS] ¿ WILL IT BECOME UNCLEAN AND THEY ANSWERED THE PRIESTS AND THEY SAID IT WILL BECOME UNCLEAN 13So Haggai asked, “If one who is defiled by contact with a corpse touches any of these, does it become defiled?” “Yes, it becomes defiled,” the priests answered.
14AND HE ANSWERED HAGGAI AND HE SAID [IS] THUS THE PEOPLE <THE> THIS AND [IS] THUS THE NATION <THE> THIS <TO> BEFORE ME [THE] UTTERANCE OF YAHWEH AND [IS] THUS ALL [THE] WORK OF HANDS THEIR AND [THAT] WHICH THEY WILL BRING NEAR THERE [IS] UNCLEAN IT 14Then Haggai replied, “So it is with this people and this nation before Me, declares the LORD, and so it is with every work of their hands; whatever they offer there is defiled.
15AND THEREFORE SET PLEASE HEART YOUR FROM THE DAY <THE> THIS AND UP -WARDS FROM BEFORE PUT A STONE TO A STONE IN [THE] TEMPLE OF YAHWEH 15Now consider carefully from this day forward:*NoteCloseOr backward; also in verse 18 Before one stone was placed on another in the temple of the LORD,
16FROM WHEN WERE THEY SOMEONE CAME TO A HEAP OF TWENTY [MEASURES] AND IT WAS TEN SOMEONE CAME TO THE WINE VAT TO DRAW FIFTY [MEASURES] A WINEPRESS AND IT WAS TWENTY 16from that time, when one came expecting a heap of twenty ephahs of grain,*NoteCloseLiterally a heap of twenty there were but ten. When one came to the winepress to draw out fifty baths*NoteCloseLiterally to draw out fifty from the winepress there were but twenty.
17I STRUCK <OBJ.> YOU WITH <THE> BLIGHT AND WITH <THE> MILDEW AND WITH <THE> HAIL <OBJ.> ALL [THE] WORK OF HANDS YOUR AND NOT <OBJ.> YOU TO ME [THE] UTTERANCE OF YAHWEH 17I struck you— all the work of your hands— with blight, mildew, and hail, but you did not turn to Me, declares the LORD.
18SET PLEASE HEART YOUR FROM THE DAY <THE> THIS AND UP -WARDS FROM DAY TWENTY AND FOUR OF THE NINTH [MONTH] <TO> FROM THE DAY WHEN IT WAS FOUNDED [THE] TEMPLE OF YAHWEH SET HEART YOUR 18Consider carefully from this day forward— from the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, the day the foundation of the LORD’s temple was laid— consider carefully:
19¿ STILL [IS] THE SEED IN THE GRANARY AND TO THE VINE AND THE FIG TREE AND THE POMEGRANATE AND [THE] TREE OF THE OLIVE NOT IT HAS BORNE [FRUIT] FROM THE DAY <THE> THIS I WILL BLESS 19Is there still seed in the barn? The vine, the fig, the pomegranate, and the olive tree have not yet yielded fruit. But from this day on, I will bless you.”
20AND IT CAME [THE] WORD OF YAHWEH A SECOND [TIME] TO HAGGAI ON [DAY] TWENTY AND FOUR OF THE MONTH <TO> SAYING Zerubbabel the LORD’s Signet Ring 20For the second time that day, the twenty-fourth day of the month, the word of the LORD came to Haggai, saying,
21SAY TO ZERUBBABEL [THE] GOVERNOR OF JUDAH <TO> SAYING I [AM] ABOUT TO SHAKE <OBJ.> THE HEAVENS AND <OBJ.> THE EARTH 21“Tell Zerubbabel governor of Judah that I am about to shake the heavens and the earth:
22AND I WILL OVERTHROW [THE] THRONE OF KINGDOMS AND I WILL DESTROY [THE] STRENGTH OF [THE] KINGDOMS OF THE NATIONS AND I WILL OVERTHROW CHARIOTRY AND RIDERS ITS AND THEY WILL GO DOWN HORSES AND RIDERS THEIR EACH BY [THE] SWORD OF BROTHER HIS 22I will overturn royal thrones and destroy the power of the kingdoms of the nations. I will overturn chariots and their riders; horses and their riders will fall, each by the sword of his brother.
23ON THE DAY <THE> THAT [THE] UTTERANCE OF YAHWEH OF HOSTS I WILL TAKE YOU O ZERUBBABEL [THE] SON OF SHEALTIEL SERVANT MY [THE] UTTERANCE OF YAHWEH AND I WILL MAKE YOU LIKE <THE> SIGNET-RING FOR <IN> YOU I HAVE CHOSEN [THE] UTTERANCE OF YAHWEH OF HOSTS 23On that day, declares the LORD of Hosts, I will take you, My servant, Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, declares the LORD, and I will make you like My signet ring, for I have chosen you, declares the LORD of Hosts.”
