14SURELY ALL THEY ARE MINISTERING SPIRITS FOR SERVICE BEING SENT FORTH FOR THE SAKE OF THOSE BEING ABOUT TO INHERIT SALVATION? 14Are not the angels*NoteCloseLiterally Are they not all ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?
1BECAUSE OF THIS IT BEHOOVES MORE ABUNDANTLY TO GIVE HEED US TO THE [THINGS] WE HAVE HEARD, OTHERWISE WE MAY DRIFT AWAY. Salvation Confirmed 1We must pay closer attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.
2IF FOR THE THROUGH ANGELS HAVING BEEN SPOKEN WORD WAS UNALTERABLE, AND EVERY TRANSGRESSION AND DISOBEDIENCE RECEIVED A JUST RECOMPENSE, 2For if the message spoken by angels was binding, and every transgression and disobedience received its just punishment,
3HOW WE OURSELVES WILL ESCAPE SUCH A GREAT HAVING NEGLECTED A SALVATION? WHICH A COMMENCEMENT HAVING RECEIVED DECLARING THROUGH THE LORD BY THOSE HAVING HEARD TO US IT WAS CONFIRMED 3how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? This salvation was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard Him,
4BEARING WITNESS <THE> GOD BY SIGNS TOGETHER WITH [THEM] AND BY WONDERS AND BY VARIOUS MIRACLES AND OF [THE] SPIRIT HOLY BY DISTRIBUTIONS ACCORDING TO THE OF HIM WILL. 4and was affirmed by God through signs, wonders, various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to His will.
5NOT FOR TO ANGELS DID HE SUBJECT THE WORLD WHICH IS COMING CONCERNING WHICH WE ARE SPEAKING; Jesus like His Brothers 5For it is not to angels that He has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking.
6HAS TESTIFIED HOWEVER SOMEWHERE SOMEONE SAYING; WHAT IS MAN THAT YOU ARE MINDFUL OF HIM OR [THE] SON OF MAN THAT YOU CARE FOR HIM? 6But somewhere it is testified in these words: “What is man that You are mindful of him, or the son of man that You care for him?
7YOU MADE LOWER HIM A LITTLE SOME THAN [THE] ANGELS; WITH GLORY AND WITH HONOR YOU CROWNED HIM AND YOU APPOINTED HIM UPON THE WORKS <THE> OF HANDS OF YOU; 7You made him a little lower*NoteCloseOr a little while lower; also in verse 9 than the angels; You crowned him with glory and honor*NoteCloseWH and TR include and set him over the works of Your hands.
8ALL THINGS YOU HAVE PUT IN SUBJECTION UNDER THE FEET OF HIM. IN <THE> FOR SUBJECTING TO HIM <THE> ALL THINGS NO [THING] HE LEFT TO HIM UNSUBJECT; AT PRESENT HOWEVER NOT YET DO WE SEE TO HIM <THE> ALL THINGS SUBJECTED. 8and placed everything under his feet.”*NoteClosePsalm 8:4–6 (see also LXX) When God subjected all things to him, He left nothing outside of his control. Yet at present we do not see everything subject to him.
9WHO HOWEVER A LITTLE ONE THAN [THE] ANGELS MADE LOWER WE SEE JESUS BECAUSE OF THE SUFFERING <THE> OF DEATH WITH GLORY AND WITH HONOR CROWNED, SO THAT BY [THE] GRACE OF GOD FOR EVERYONE HE MAY TASTE DEATH. 9But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because He suffered death, so that by the grace of God He might taste death for everyone.
10IT WAS FITTING FOR TO HIM, FOR WHOM [ARE] <THE> ALL THINGS AND THROUGH WHOM [ARE] <THE> ALL THINGS, MANY SONS TO GLORY HAVING BROUGHT, THE ARCHETYPE OF THE SALVATION OF THEM THROUGH SUFFERINGS TO MAKE PERFECT. 10In bringing many sons to glory, it was fitting for God, for whom and through whom all things exist, to make the author*NoteCloseOr pioneer or founder of their salvation perfect through suffering.
11THE [ONE] BOTH FOR SANCTIFYING AND THOSE BEING SANCTIFIED OF ONE [ARE] ALL; FOR WHICH REASON NOT HE IS ASHAMED BROTHERS THEM TO CALL 11For both the One who sanctifies and those who are sanctified are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers.
12SAYING: I WILL DECLARE THE NAME OF YOU TO THE BROTHERS OF MINE, IN [THE] MIDST OF [THE] CONGREGATION I WILL SING PRAISES OF YOU. 12He says: “I will proclaim Your name to My brothers; I will sing Your praises in the assembly.”*NoteClosePsalm 22:22 (see also LXX)
13AND AGAIN: I MYSELF WILL BE ALREADY TRUSTING IN HIM. AND AGAIN: BEHOLD I MYSELF AND THE CHILDREN WHOM TO ME HAS GIVEN <THE> GOD. 13And again: “I will put My trust in Him.”*NoteCloseIsaiah 8:17 And once again: “Here am I, and the children God has given Me.”*NoteCloseIsaiah 8:18
14SINCE THEREFORE THE CHILDREN HAVE PARTAKEN OF BLOOD AND OF FLESH ALSO HE HIMSELF LIKEWISE TOOK PART IN THE SAME THINGS, SO THAT THROUGH <THE> [HIS] DEATH HE MAY DESTROY THE [ONE] THE POWER HOLDING <THE> OF DEATH, THAT IS THE DEVIL, 14Now since the children have flesh and blood, He too shared in their humanity, so that by His death He might destroy him who holds the power of death, that is, the devil,
15AND MAY SET FREE THOSE AS MANY AS FEAR OF DEATH THROUGH ALL [TIMES] OF THEM TO LIVE SUBJECT THEY WERE TO SLAVERY. 15and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.
16NOT FOR SURELY SOMEWHERE [THE] ANGELS HE HELPS, BUT [THE] SEED OF ABRAHAM HE HELPS. 16For surely it is not the angels He helps, but the descendants of Abraham.
17THEREFORE IT WAS NECESSARY IN ALL THINGS <THE> [HIS] BROTHERS TO BE MADE LIKE, SO THAT A MERCIFUL HE MAY BECOME AND FAITHFUL HIGH PRIEST [IN] <THE> [THINGS] RELATING TO <THE> GOD IN ORDER <THE> TO MAKE PROPITIATION FOR THE SINS OF THE PEOPLE. 17For this reason He had to be made like His brothers in every way, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, in order to make atonement*NoteCloseOr to make propitiation for the sins of the people.
18IN THAT FOR HAS SUFFERED HE HIMSELF HAVING BEEN TEMPTED, HE IS ABLE THOSE BEING TEMPTED TO HELP. 18Because He Himself suffered when He was tempted, He is able to help those who are being tempted.
