1WHEN HEAL I <TO> ISRAEL AND IT IS REVEALED [THE] INIQUITY OF EPHRAIM AND [THE] EVIL DEEDS OF SAMARIA FOR THEY DO FALSEHOOD AND A THIEF HE COMES IT ATTACKS A MARAUDING BAND IN THE STREET Ephraim’s Iniquity 1When I heal Israel, the iniquity of Ephraim*NoteCloseThat is, the northern kingdom of Israel; also in verses 8 and 11 will be exposed, as well as the crimes of Samaria. For they practice deceit and thieves break in; bandits raid in the streets.
2AND NOT THEY SAY TO HEART THEIR ALL EVIL THEIR I REMEMBER NOW THEY HAVE SURROUNDED THEM DEEDS THEIR BEFORE FACE MY THEY ARE 2But they fail to consider in their hearts that I remember all their evil. Now their deeds are all around them; they are before My face.
3BY EVIL THEIR THEY MAKE GLAD [THE] KING AND BY LIES THEIR PRINCES 3They delight the king with their evil, and the princes with their lies.
4ALL OF THEM [ARE] ADULTERERS LIKE AN OVEN BURNING FROM A BAKER [WHO] HE CEASES STIRRING UP FROM KNEADING [THE] DOUGH UNTIL IS LEAVENED IT 4They are all adulterers, like an oven heated by a baker who needs not stoke the fire from the kneading to the rising of the dough.
5[THE] DAY OF KING OUR THEY BECAME SICK PRINCES FEVER FROM WINE HE STRETCHED OUT HAND HIS WITH SCORNERS 5The princes are inflamed with wine on the day of our king; so he joins hands with those who mock him.
6FOR THEY HAVE BROUGHT NEAR LIKE <THE> OVEN HEART THEIR IN AMBUSH THEIR ALL THE NIGHT [IS] SLEEPING BAKER THEIR MORNING IT [IS] BURNING LIKE A FIRE OF FLAME 6For they prepare their heart like an oven while they lie in wait; all night their anger smolders;*NoteCloseLiterally their baker sleeps in the morning it blazes like a flaming fire.
7ALL OF THEM THEY ARE HOT LIKE <THE> OVEN AND THEY DEVOUR <OBJ.> RULERS THEIR ALL KINGS THEIR THEY HAVE FALLEN THERE NOT [IS ONE WHO] CALLS AMONG <THE> THEM TO ME 7All of them are hot as an oven, and they devour their rulers. All their kings fall; not one of them calls upon Me.
8EPHRAIM AMONG THE PEOPLES HE HE MIXES HIMSELF EPHRAIM HE HAS BECOME A BREAD CAKE NOT TURNED OVER 8Ephraim mixes with the nations; Ephraim is an unturned cake.
9THEY HAVE CONSUMED STRANGERS STRENGTH HIS AND HE NOT HE KNOWS ALSO GRAY HAIR IT HAS SNEAKED IN ON HIM AND HE NOT HE KNOWS 9Foreigners consume his strength, but he does not notice. Even his hair is streaked with gray, but he does not know.
10AND IT TESTIFIES [THE] PRIDE OF ISRAEL IN FACE ITS AND NOT THEY HAVE RETURNED TO YAHWEH GOD THEIR AND NOT THEY HAVE SOUGHT HIM FOR ALL THIS 10Israel’s arrogance testifies against them, yet they do not return to the LORD their God; despite all this, they do not seek Him.
11AND HE HAS BECOME EPHRAIM LIKE A DOVE SILLY THERE NOT [IS] HEART EGYPT THEY HAVE CALLED ASSYRIA THEY HAVE GONE 11So Ephraim has become like a silly, senseless dove— calling out to Egypt, then turning to Assyria.
12JUST WHEN THEY WILL GO I WILL SPREAD OVER THEM NET MY LIKE [THE] BIRD[S] OF THE HEAVENS I WILL BRING DOWN THEM I WILL CHASTEN THEM ACCORDING TO A REPORT TO ASSEMBLY THEIR 12As they go, I will spread My net over them; I will bring them down like birds of the air. I will chastise them when I hear them flocking together.*NoteCloseOr I will chastise them according to what was reported against them in the assembly.
13WOE! TO THEM FOR THEY HAVE FLED FROM ME DEVASTATION [BELONGS] TO THEM FOR THEY HAVE TRANSGRESSED AGAINST ME AND I I WILL REDEEM THEM AND THEY THEY HAVE SPOKEN ON ME LIES 13Woe to them, for they have strayed from Me! Destruction to them, for they have rebelled against Me! Though I would redeem them, they speak lies against Me.
14AND NOT THEY HAVE CRIED OUT TO ME WITH HEART THEIR IF THEY WAIL ON BEDS THEIR ON GRAIN AND NEW WINE THEY ASSEMBLE THEMSELVES THEY TURN ASIDE AGAINST ME 14They do not cry out to Me from their hearts when they wail upon their beds. 15AND I I INSTRUCTED [THEM] I STRENGTHENED ARMS THEIR AND AGAINST ME THEY PLOT EVIL 15Although I trained and strengthened their arms, they plot evil against Me.
16THEY TURN NOT HEIGHT THEY HAVE BECOME LIKE A BOW OF SLACKNESS THEY WILL FALL BY THE SWORD LEADERS THEIR FROM [THE] INDIGNATION OF TONGUE THEIR THIS [WILL BE] MOCKERY THEIR IN [THE] LAND OF EGYPT 16They turn, but not to the Most High; they are like a faulty bow. Their leaders will fall by the sword for the cursing of their tongue; for this they will be ridiculed in the land of Egypt.
