38AND IT WAS HE [WAS] BOWING DOWN [THE] HOUSE OF NISROCH GOD HIS AND ADRAMMELECH AND SHAREZER SONS HIS THEY STRUCK DOWN HIM WITH THE SWORD AND THEY THEY ESCAPED [THE] LAND OF ARARAT AND HE REIGNED ESAR- -HADDON SON HIS IN PLACE HIS 38One day, while he was worshiping in the temple of his god Nisroch, his sons Adrammelech and Sharezer put him to the sword and escaped to the land of Ararat. And his son Esar-haddon reigned in his place.
1IN THE DAYS <THE> THOSE HE BECAME SICK HEZEKIAH TO DIE AND HE WENT TO HIM ISAIAH [THE] SON OF AMOZ THE PROPHET AND HE SAID TO HIM THUS HE SAYS YAHWEH COMMAND TO HOUSEHOLD YOUR FOR [ARE] ABOUT TO DIE YOU AND NOT YOU WILL LIVE Hezekiah’s Illness and Recovery (2 Kings 20:1–11; 2 Chronicles 32:24–31) 1In those days Hezekiah became mortally ill. The prophet Isaiah son of Amoz came to him and said, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Put your house in order, for you are about to die; you will not recover.’”
2AND HE TURNED HEZEKIAH FACE HIS TO THE WALL AND HE PRAYED TO YAHWEH 2Then Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed to the LORD,
3AND HE SAID I BEG YOU O YAHWEH REMEMBER PLEASE <OBJ.> THIS: I HAVE WALKED ABOUT <TO> BEFORE YOU IN FAITHFULNESS AND WITH A HEART COMPLETE AND THE GOOD IN VIEW YOUR I HAVE DONE AND HE WEPT HEZEKIAH WEEPING GREAT 3saying, “Please, O LORD, remember how I have walked before You faithfully and with wholehearted devotion; I have done what is good in Your sight.” And Hezekiah wept bitterly.
4AND IT CAME [THE] WORD OF YAHWEH TO ISAIAH <TO> SAYING 4And the word of the LORD came to Isaiah, saying,
5GO AND YOU WILL SAY TO HEZEKIAH THUS HE SAYS YAHWEH [THE] GOD OF DAVID ANCESTOR YOUR I HAVE HEARD <OBJ.> PRAYER YOUR I HAVE SEEN <OBJ.> TEAR[S] YOUR HERE I HE WILL ADD TO DAYS YOUR FIF- TEEN YEAR[S] 5“Go and tell Hezekiah that this is what the LORD, the God of your father David, says: ‘I have heard your prayer; I have seen your tears. Behold, I will add fifteen years to your life.
6AND FROM [THE] HAND OF [THE] KING OF ASSYRIA I WILL DELIVER YOU AND <OBJ.> THE CITY <THE> THIS AND I WILL DEFEND <ON> THE CITY <THE> THIS 6And I will deliver you and this city from the hand of the king of Assyria. 7AND THIS FOR YOU [WILL BE] THE SIGN FROM WITH YAHWEH THAT HE WILL DO YAHWEH <OBJ.> THE THING <THE> THIS WHICH HE HAS SPOKEN 7This will be a sign to you from the LORD that He will do what He has promised:
8HERE I [AM] ABOUT TO TURN BACK <OBJ.> [THE] SHADOW OF THE STEPS WHICH IT HAD GONE DOWN ON [THE] STEPS OF AHAZ WITH THE SUN BACKWARDS TEN STEPS AND IT WENT BACK THE SUN TEN STEPS ON THE STEPS WHICH IT HAD GONE DOWN 8I will make the sun’s shadow that falls on the stairway of Ahaz go back ten steps.’” So the sunlight went back the ten steps it had descended.
9A WRITING OF HEZEKIAH [THE] KING OF JUDAH WHEN WAS SICK HE AND HE LIVED FROM SICKNESS HIS Hezekiah’s Song of Thanksgiving 9This is a writing by Hezekiah king of Judah after his illness and recovery:
10I I SAID IN [THE] HALF OF DAYS MY LET ME GO IN [THE] GATES OF SHEOL I HAVE BEEN CAUSED TO MISS [THE] REMAINDER OF YEARS MY 10I said, “In the prime*NoteCloseOr In the quiet or In the middle of my life I must go through the gates of Sheol and be deprived of the remainder of my years.”
11I SAID NOT I WILL SEE YAHWEH YAHWEH IN [THE] LAND OF THE LIVING NOT I WILL LOOK AT HUMANKIND AGAIN WITH [THE] INHABITANTS OF CESSATION 11I said, “I will never again see the LORD, even the LORD, in the land of the living; I will no longer look on mankind with those who dwell in this world.
12DWELLING-PLACE MY IT HAS BEEN PULLED UP AND IT HAS BEEN REMOVED FROM ME LIKE [THE] TENT OF SHEPHERD MY I HAVE ROLLED UP LIKE <THE> WEAVER LIFE MY FROM [THE] LOOM HE CUTS OFF ME FROM DAY UNTO NIGHT YOU MAKE AN END OF ME 12My dwelling has been picked up and removed from me like a shepherd’s tent. I have rolled up my life like a weaver; He cuts me off from the loom; from day until night You make an end of me.
13I HAVE LAIN DOWN UNTIL MORNING LIKE <THE> LION SO HE BREAKS ALL BONES MY FROM DAY UNTO NIGHT YOU MAKE AN END OF ME 13I composed myself*NoteCloseOr I cried out; see Targum Yonaton. until the morning. Like a lion He breaks all my bones; from day until night You make an end of me.
14LIKE A SWALLOW A CRANE SO I CHIRP I MOAN LIKE <THE> DOVE THEY ARE CAST DOWN EYES MY TO THE HEIGHT[S] O LORD OPPRESSION [BELONGS] TO ME STAND SURETY FOR ME 14I chirp like a swallow or crane; I moan like a dove. My eyes grow weak as I look upward. O Lord, I am oppressed be my security.”
15WHAT? WILL I SAY AND HE HAS SPOKEN TO ME AND HE HE HAS ACTED I WILL WALK DELIBERATELY ALL YEARS MY ON [THE] BITTERNESS OF SELF MY 15What can I say? He has spoken to me, and He Himself has done this. I will walk slowly all my years because of the anguish of my soul.
16O LORD ON THEM PEOPLE LIVE AND TO ALL IN THEM [THE] LIFE OF SPIRIT MY AND MAY YOU RESTORE TO HEALTH ME AND PRESERVE ALIVE ME 16O Lord, by such things men live, and in all of them my spirit finds life. You have restored me to health and have let me live.
17HERE! FOR WELFARE IT WAS BITTER TO ME BITTERLY AND YOU YOU LOVED LIFE MY FROM [THE] PIT OF DESTRUCTION FOR YOU THREW AWAY BEHIND BACK YOUR ALL SINS MY 17Surely for my own welfare I had such great anguish; but Your love has delivered me from the pit of oblivion, for You have cast all my sins behind Your back.
18FOR NOT SHEOL IT GIVES THANKS TO YOU DEATH IT PRAISES YOU NOT THEY HOPE [THOSE WHO] GO DOWN OF [THE] PIT TO FAITHFULNESS YOUR 18For Sheol cannot thank You; Death cannot praise You. Those who descend to the Pit cannot hope for Your faithfulness.
19[THE] LIVING [THE] LIVING HE HE GIVES THANKS TO YOU AS I THIS DAY A FATHER TO CHILDREN HE MAKES KNOWN CONCERNING FAITHFULNESS YOUR 19The living, only the living, can thank You, as I do today; fathers will tell their children about Your faithfulness.
20YAHWEH [IS] TO SAVE ME AND SONGS MY WE WILL PLAY ALL [THE] DAYS OF LIVES OUR AT [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH 20The LORD will save me; we will play songs on stringed instruments all the days of our lives in the house of the LORD.
21AND HE SAID ISAIAH LET THEM TAKE A CAKE OF FIGS AND LET THEM RUB [IT] ON THE BOIL SO HE MAY LIVE 21Now Isaiah had said, “Prepare a lump of pressed figs and apply it to the boil, and he will recover.”
22AND HE SAID HEZEKIAH WHAT? [WILL BE THE] SIGN THAT I WILL GO UP [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH 22And Hezekiah had asked, “What will be the sign that I will go up to the house of the LORD?”
