1FROM WHERE [COME] DISPUTES AND FROM WHERE QUARRELS AMONG YOU? SURELY FROM THERE, OUT OF THE PASSIONS OF YOU THOSE WARRING IN THE MEMBERS OF YOU? A Warning against Pride 1What causes conflicts and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from the passions at war within you?*NoteCloseLiterally passions warring among your members?
2YOU DESIRE AND NOT HAVE; YOU KILL AND COVET AND NOT ARE ABLE TO OBTAIN; YOU QUARREL AND WRANGLE; NOT YOU HAVE NOW BECAUSE <THE> NOT TO ASK YOU; 2You crave what you do not have; you kill and covet, but are unable to obtain it. You quarrel and fight. You do not have, because you do not ask.
3YOU ASK AND NOT RECEIVE, BECAUSE WRONGLY YOU ASK, THAT IN THE PLEASURES OF YOU YOU MAY SPEND [IT]. 3And when you do ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may squander it on your pleasures.
4ADULTERERS — AND ADULTERESSES! SURELY YOU KNOW THAT THE FRIENDSHIP WITH THE WORLD HOSTILITY <THE> WITH GOD IS? WHO[EVER] MAYBE THEREFORE SHALL CHOOSE A FRIEND TO BE OF THE WORLD, AN ENEMY <THE> OF GOD IS APPOINTED. 4You adulteresses!*NoteCloseSee Hosea 3:1. Do you not know that friendship with the world is hostility toward God? Therefore, whoever chooses to be a friend of the world renders himself*NoteCloseOr is appointed an enemy of God.
5OR THINK YOU THAT IN VAIN THE SCRIPTURE SPEAKS? WITH ENVY YEARNS THE SPIRIT THAT HE SETTLED IN US, 5Or do you think the Scripture says without reason that the Spirit*NoteCloseOr the spirit He caused to dwell in us yearns with envy?
6GREATER HOWEVER HE GIVES GRACE; THEREFORE IT SAYS: <THE> GOD [THE] PROUD OPPOSES, TO [THE] HUMBLE HOWEVER GIVES GRACE. 6But He gives us more grace. This is why it says: God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”*NoteCloseProverbs 3:34 (see also LXX)
7DO BE SUBJECTED THEREFORE <THE> TO GOD. DO RESIST HOWEVER THE DEVIL AND HE WILL FLEE FROM YOU, Drawing Near to God 7Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
8DO DRAW NEAR <THE> TO GOD AND HE WILL DRAW NEAR TO YOU. DO CLEANSE [YOUR] HANDS, [YOU] SINNERS, AND DO PURIFY HEARTS, [YOU] DOUBLE-MINDED. 8Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
9DO BE GRIEVED AND DO MOURN AND DO WEEP; THE LAUGHTER OF YOU TO MOURNING SHOULD BE TURNED AND THE JOY TO GLOOM. 9Grieve, mourn, and weep. Turn your laughter to mourning, and your joy to gloom.
10DO BE HUMBLED IN THE PRESENCE OF THE LORD AND HE WILL EXALT YOU. 10Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will exalt you.
11NOT DO SPEAK AGAINST ONE ANOTHER, BROTHERS; THE [ONE] SPEAKING AGAINST [HIS] BROTHER OR JUDGING THE BROTHER OF HIM SPEAKS AGAINST [THE] LAW AND JUDGES [THE] LAW; IF HOWEVER [THE] LAW YOU JUDGE, NOT YOU ARE A DOER OF [THE] LAW BUT A JUDGE. 11Brothers, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against his brother or judges him speaks against the law and judges it. And if you judge the law, you are not a practitioner of the law, but a judge of it.
12ONE THERE IS <THE> LAWGIVER AND JUDGE WHO IS BEING ABLE TO SAVE AND TO DESTROY; YOU YOURSELF HOWEVER WHO ARE YOU WHO [ARE] JUDGING THE NEIGHBOUR? 12There is only one Lawgiver and Judge, the One who is able to save and destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor?
13DO COME NOW YOU WHO [ARE] SAYING; TODAY OR TOMORROW WE WILL GO INTO SUCH <THE> CITY AND WILL SPEND THERE A YEAR ONE AND WILL TRADE AND WILL MAKE A PROFIT; Do Not Boast about Tomorrow (Proverbs 27:1) 13Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business, and make a profit. ”
14[YOU] WHO NOT YOU KNOW WHAT [IS] ON THE NEXT DAY [IS] WHAT [IS] FOR THE LIFE OF YOU! A VAPOR JUST YOU ARE <THE> FOR A LITTLE [WHILE] APPEARING THEN AND ALSO VANISHING; 14You do not even know what will happen tomorrow! What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.
15INSTEAD [OUGHT] <THE> TO SAY YOU; IF THE LORD SHALL WISH BOTH WE WILL LIVE AND WE WILL DO THIS OR THAT. 15Instead, you ought to say, “If the Lord is willing, we will live and do this or that. ”
16NOW HOWEVER YOU BOAST IN THE ARROGANCE OF YOU; ALL BOASTING SUCH EVIL IS. 16As it is, you boast in your proud intentions. All such boasting is evil.
17TO [HIM] KNOWING THEREFORE GOOD TO DO AND NOT DOING [IT], SIN TO HIM IT IS. 17Anyone, then, who knows the right thing to do, yet fails to do it, is guilty of sin.
