17TO [HIM] KNOWING THEREFORE GOOD TO DO AND NOT DOING [IT], SIN TO HIM IT IS. 17Anyone, then, who knows the right thing to do, yet fails to do it, is guilty of sin.
1DO COME NOW YOU WHO [ARE] RICH, DO WEEP WAILING OVER THE MISERIES UPON YOU THAT [ARE] COMING. A Warning to the Rich (Proverbs 23:1–5; 1 Timothy 6:17–19) 1Come now, you who are rich, weep and wail over the misery to come upon you.
2THE RICHES OF YOU HAVE ROTTED AND THE GARMENTS OF YOU MOTH-EATEN HAVE BECOME; 2Your riches have rotted and moths have eaten your clothes.
3THE GOLD OF YOU AND THE SILVER HAVE CORRODED AND THE RUST OF THEM FOR A TESTIMONY AGAINST YOU WILL BE AND IT WILL EAT THE FLESH OF YOU LIKE FIRE; YOU HAVE TREASURED UP IN [THE] LAST DAYS. 3Your gold and silver are corroded. Their corrosion will testify against you and consume your flesh like fire. You have hoarded treasure in the last days.
4BEHOLD THE WAGE OF THE WORKMEN WHO HAVING HARVESTED THE FIELDS OF YOU WHICH KEPT BACK BY YOU CRIES OUT AND THE CRIES OF THOSE HAVING HARVESTED INTO THE EARS OF [THE] LORD OF HOSTS HAVE ENTERED. 4Look, the wages you withheld from the workmen who mowed your fields are crying out against you. The cries of the harvesters have reached the ears of the Lord of Hosts.
5YOU LIVED IN LUXURY UPON THE EARTH AND LIVED IN SELF-INDULGENCE, YOU HAVE FATTENED THE HEARTS OF YOU AS IN [THE] DAY OF SLAUGHTER. 5You have lived on earth in luxury and self-indulgence. You have fattened your hearts in the day of slaughter.
6YOU HAVE CONDEMNED [AND] HAVE PUT TO DEATH THE RIGHTEOUS; NOT DOES HE RESIST YOU. 6You have condemned and murdered the righteous, who did not resist you.
7DO BE PATIENT THEREFORE, BROTHERS, UNTIL THE COMING OF THE LORD. BEHOLD THE FARMER AWAITS THE PRECIOUS FRUIT OF THE EARTH BEING PATIENT FOR IT UNTIL WHEN IT MAY RECEIVE RAIN [THE] EARLY AND LATTER [RAINS]; Patience in Suffering (Job 1:1–5) 7Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer awaits the precious fruit of the soil— how patient he is for the fall and spring rains.*NoteCloseLiterally for it until it receives the early and the late
8DO BE PATIENT ALSO YOU YOURSELVES, DO STRENGTHEN THE HEARTS OF YOU, BECAUSE THE COMING OF THE LORD HAS DRAWN NEAR. 8You, too, be patient and strengthen your hearts, because the Lord’s coming is near.
9NOT DO GRUMBLE BROTHERS AGAINST ONE ANOTHER SO THAT NOT YOU MAY BE JUDGED; BEHOLD THE JUDGE BEFORE THE DOORS HAS BEEN STOOD. 9Do not complain about one another, brothers, so that you will not be judged. Look, the Judge is standing at the door!
10[AS] AN EXAMPLE DO TAKE BROTHERS OF MINE <THE> OF SUFFERING EVILS AND <THE> OF PATIENCE THE PROPHETS WHO SPOKE IN THE NAME OF [THE] LORD. 10Brothers, as an example of patience in affliction take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord.
11BEHOLD WE COUNT BLESSED THOSE HAVING PERSEVERED; THE PERSEVERANCE OF JOB YOU HAVE HEARD OF AND THE OUTCOME FROM [THE] LORD YOU HAVE SEEN, THAT FULL OF COMPASSION IS THE LORD AND [IS] MERCIFUL. 11See how blessed we consider those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen the outcome from the Lord. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.
12BEFORE ALL THINGS HOWEVER, BROTHERS OF MINE, NOT DO SWEAR, NEITHER [SWEAR BY] <THE> HEAVEN NOR [SWEAR BY] THE EARTH NOR [SWEAR BY] OTHER ANY OATH; SHOULD BE HOWEVER OF YOU THE YES [BE] YES AND THE NO [BE] NO, SO THAT NOT UNDER JUDGMENT YOU MAY FALL. 12Above all, my brothers, do not swear, not by heaven or earth or by any other oath. Simply let your “Yes ” be yes, and your “No, ” no, so that you will not fall under judgment.
13IS SUFFERING HARDSHIPS ANYONE AMONG YOU? HE SHOULD PRAY; IS CHEERFUL ANYONE? HE SHOULD SING PRAISES. The Prayer of Faith 13Is any one of you suffering? He should pray. Is anyone cheerful? He should sing praises.
14IS SICK ANYONE AMONG YOU? HE SHOULD CALL NEAR THE ELDERS OF THE CHURCH AND THEY SHOULD PRAY OVER HIM HAVING ANOINTED HIM WITH OIL IN THE NAME OF THE LORD. 14Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord.
15AND THE PRAYER <THE> OF FAITH WILL SAVE THE [ONE] AILING AND WILL RAISE UP HIM THE LORD; AND IF SINS HE SHALL BE [ONE] HAVING COMMITTED, IT WILL BE FORGIVEN TO HIM. 15And the prayer offered in faith will restore the one who is sick. The Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven.
16DO CONFESS THEREFORE TO ONE ANOTHER THE SINS AND DO PRAY FOR ONE ANOTHER, SO THAT YOU MAY BE HEALED; MUCH PREVAILS [THE] PRAYER OF A RIGHTEOUS [MAN] BEING MADE EFFECTIVE. 16Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man has great power to prevail.
17ELIJAH A MAN WAS OF LIKE NATURE TO US AND WITH FERVENT PRAYER HE PRAYED [FOR IT] <THE> NOT TO RAIN; AND NOT IT DID RAIN UPON THE EARTH YEARS THREE AND MONTHS SIX; 17Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years.
18AND AGAIN HE PRAYED AND THE HEAVEN RAIN GAVE AND THE EARTH PRODUCED THE FRUIT OF IT. 18Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth yielded its crops.
19BROTHERS OF MINE, IF ANYONE AMONG YOU SHALL WANDER FROM THE TRUTH AND SHALL BRING BACK SOMEONE HIM, Restoring a Sinner 19My brothers, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring him back,
20HE SHOULD KNOW THAT THE [ONE] HAVING BROUGHT BACK A SINNER FROM [THE] ERROR OF THE WAY OF HIM WILL SAVE [THE] SOUL OF HIM FROM DEATH AND WILL COVER OVER A MULTITUDE OF SINS. 20consider this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and cover over a multitude of sins.
