17AND IF NOT THEY WILL LISTEN AND I WILL PLUCK UP <OBJ.> THE NATION <THE> THAT PLUCKING UP AND DESTROYING [THE] UTTERANCE OF YAHWEH 17But if they will not obey, then I will uproot that nation; I will uproot it and destroy it, declares the LORD.”
1THUS HE SAID YAHWEH TO ME GO AND YOU WILL BUY FOR <THE> YOURSELF A LOINCLOTH OF LINEN<S> AND YOU WILL PUT IT ON LOINS YOUR AND IN <THE> WATER NOT YOU MUST CAUSE TO GO IT The Linen Loincloth 1This is what the LORD said to me: “Go and buy yourself a linen loincloth and put it around your waist, but do not let it touch water.”
2AND I BOUGHT <OBJ.> THE LOINCLOTH ACCORDING TO [THE] WORD OF YAHWEH AND I PUT [IT] ON LOINS MY 2So I bought a loincloth in accordance with the word of the LORD, and I put it around my waist.
3AND IT CAME [THE] WORD OF YAHWEH TO ME A SECOND [TIME] <TO> SAYING 3Then the word of the LORD came to me a second time:
4TAKE <OBJ.> THE LOINCLOTH WHICH YOU BOUGHT WHICH [IS] ON LOINS YOUR AND ARISE GO PERATH TOWARDS AND HIDE IT THERE IN [THE] CLEFT OF THE ROCK 4“Take the loincloth that you bought and are wearing, and go at once to Perath*NoteCloseOr possibly to the Euphrates; similarly in verses 5–7 and hide it there in a crevice of the rocks.”
5AND I WENT AND I HID IT AT PERATH JUST AS HE HAD COMMANDED YAHWEH <OBJ.> ME 5So I went and hid it at Perath, as the LORD had commanded me.
6AND IT WAS FROM [THE] END OF DAYS MANY AND HE SAID YAHWEH TO ME ARISE GO PERATH TOWARDS AND TAKE FROM THERE <OBJ.> THE LOINCLOTH WHICH I COMMANDED YOU TO HIDE IT THERE 6Many days later the LORD said to me, “Arise, go to Perath, and get the loincloth that I commanded you to hide there.”
7AND I WENT PERATH TOWARDS AND I DUG AND I TOOK <OBJ.> THE LOINCLOTH FROM THE PLACE WHERE I HAD HIDDEN IT THERE <TOWARDS> AND THERE! IT WAS RUINED THE LOINCLOTH NOT IT WAS PROFITABLE FOR <THE> ANYTHING 7So I went to Perath and dug up the loincloth, and I took it from the place where I had hidden it. But now it was ruined— of no use at all.
9THUS HE SAYS YAHWEH THUS I WILL RUIN <OBJ.> [THE] PRIDE OF JUDAH AND <OBJ.> [THE] PRIDE OF JERUSALEM <THE> GREAT 9“This is what the LORD says: In the same way I will ruin the pride of Judah and the great pride of Jerusalem.
10THE PEOPLE <THE> THIS <THE> WICKED WHO ARE REFUSING TO HEAR <OBJ.> WORDS MY WHO WALK IN [THE] STUBBORNNESS OF OWN HEART THEIR AND THEY HAVE WALKED AFTER GODS OTHER TO SERVE THEM AND TO BOW DOWN TO <THE> THEM AND LET IT BE LIKE THE LOINCLOTH <THE> THIS WHICH NOT IT IS PROFITABLE FOR <THE> ANYTHING 10These evil people, who refuse to listen to My words, who follow the stubbornness of their own hearts, and who go after other gods to serve and worship them, they will be like this loincloth— of no use at all.
11FOR JUST AS IT CLINGS <THE> LOINCLOTH TO [THE] LOINS OF A PERSON SO I HAVE MADE CLING TO ME <OBJ.> ALL [THE] HOUSE OF ISRAEL AND <OBJ.> ALL [THE] HOUSE OF JUDAH [THE] UTTERANCE OF YAHWEH TO BECOME FOR <THE> ME <INTO> A PEOPLE AND <INTO> A NAME AND <INTO> PRAISE AND <INTO> HONOR AND NOT THEY LISTENED 11For just as a loincloth clings to a man’s waist, so I have made the whole house of Israel and the whole house of Judah cling to Me, declares the LORD, so that they might be My people for My renown and praise and glory. But they did not listen.
12AND YOU WILL SPEAK TO THEM <OBJ.> THE WORD <THE> THIS THUS HE SAYS YAHWEH [THE] GOD OF ISRAEL EVERY WINESKIN IT WILL BE FILLED WINE AND THEY WILL SAY TO YOU ¿ REALLY <TO KNOW> NOT DO WE KNOW THAT EVERY WINESKIN IT WILL BE FILLED WINE The Wineskins 12Therefore you are to tell them that this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Every wineskin shall be filled with wine.’ And when they reply ‘Don’t we surely know that every wineskin should be filled with wine?’
13AND YOU WILL SAY TO THEM THUS HE SAYS YAHWEH HERE I [AM] ABOUT TO FILL <OBJ.> ALL [THE] INHABITANTS OF THE LAND <THE> THIS AND <OBJ.> THE KINGS WHO SIT FOR DAVID ON THRONE HIS AND <OBJ.> THE PRIESTS AND <OBJ.> THE PROPHETS AND <OBJ.> ALL [THE] INHABITANTS OF JERUSALEM DRUNKENNESS 13then you are to tell them that this is what the LORD says: ‘I am going to fill with drunkenness all who live in this land— the kings who sit on David’s throne, the priests, the prophets, and all the people of Jerusalem.
14AND I WILL SMASH THEM EACH TO BROTHER HIS AND THE PARENTS AND THE CHILDREN ALIKE [THE] UTTERANCE OF YAHWEH NOT I WILL SHOW PITY AND NOT I WILL HAVE MERCY AND NOT I WILL HAVE COMPASSION FROM DESTROYING THEM 14I will smash them against one another, fathers and sons alike, declares the LORD. I will allow no mercy or pity or compassion to keep Me from destroying them.’”
15HEAR AND GIVE EAR MAY NOT YOU BE HAUGHTY FOR YAHWEH HE HAS SPOKEN Captivity Threatened 15Listen and give heed. Do not be arrogant, for the LORD has spoken.
16GIVE TO YAHWEH GOD YOUR GLORY <IN> BEFORE HE WILL BRING DARKNESS AND <IN> BEFORE THEY WILL STUMBLE FEET YOUR ON MOUNTAINS OF TWILIGHT AND YOU WILL WAIT FOR LIGHT AND HE WILL MAKE IT INTO DEEP DARKNESS AND HE WILL MAKE [IT] INTO THICK DARKNESS 16Give glory to the LORD your God before He brings darkness, before your feet stumble on the dusky mountains. You wait for light, but He turns it into deep gloom and thick darkness.
17AND IF NOT YOU WILL LISTEN TO IT IN SECRET PLACES IT WILL WEEP SELF MY <FROM> BECAUSE OF PRIDE AND UTTERLY <TO WEEP> IT WILL WEEP AND IT MAY RUN DOWN EYE MY TEAR[S] FOR IT HAS BEEN TAKEN CAPTIVE [THE] FLOCK OF YAHWEH 17But if you do not listen, I will weep in secret because of your pride. My eyes will overflow with tears, because the LORD’s flock has been taken captive.
18SAY TO THE KING AND TO THE QUEEN-MOTHER MAKE LOW SIT FOR IT HAS COME DOWN [THE] PLACE OF HEAD YOUR [THE] CROWN OF SPLENDOR YOUR 18Say to the king and to the queen mother: “Take a lowly seat, for your glorious crowns have fallen from your heads.”
19[THE] CITIES OF THE NEGEV THEY HAVE BEEN SHUT UP AND THERE NOT [IS ONE WHO] OPENS IT HAS BEEN TAKEN INTO EXILE JUDAH ALL OF IT IT HAS BEEN TAKEN INTO EXILE COMPLETENESS<ES> 19The cities of the Negev have been shut tight, and no one can open them. All Judah has been carried into exile, wholly taken captive.
20LIFT UP EYES YOUR AND SEE THOSE [WHO] ARE COMING FROM [THE] NORTH WHERE? [IS] THE FLOCK [WHICH] IT WAS GIVEN TO <THE> YOU [THE] SHEEP OF BEAUTY YOUR 20Lift up your eyes and see those coming from the north. Where is the flock entrusted to you, the sheep that were your pride?
21WHAT? WILL YOU SAY THAT HE WILL APPOINT OVER YOU AND YOU YOU TAUGHT <OBJ.> THEM OVER YOU CLOSE FRIENDS TO CHIEF ¿ NOT LABOR-PAINS WILL THEY SEIZE YOU LIKE A WOMAN <OF> GIVING BIRTH 21What will you say when He sets over you close allies whom you yourself trained? Will not pangs of anguish grip you, as they do a woman in labor?
22AND IF YOU WILL SAY IN HEART YOUR WHY? HAVE THEY HAPPENED TO ME THESE [THINGS] IN [THE] GREATNESS OF INIQUITY YOUR THEY HAVE BEEN UNCOVERED SKIRTS YOUR THEY HAVE SUFFERED VIOLENCE HEELS YOUR 22And if you ask yourself, “Why has this happened to me?” It is because of the magnitude of your iniquity that your skirts have been stripped off and your body has been exposed.*NoteCloseLiterally and your heels have suffered violence
23¿ WILL HE CHANGE A CUSHITE SKIN HIS AND A LEOPARD SPOTS ITS ALSO YOU YOU WILL BE ABLE TO DO GOOD O [THOSE] TRAINED <OF> TO DO EVIL 23Can the Ethiopian*NoteCloseHebrew that Cushite; that is, probably a person from the upper Nile region change his skin, or the leopard his spots? Neither are you able to do good— you who are accustomed to doing evil.
24AND I WILL SCATTER THEM LIKE CHAFF [WHICH] PASSES AWAY TO [THE] WIND OF [THE] WILDERNESS 24“I will scatter you like chaff driven by the desert wind.
25THIS [IS] LOT YOUR [THE] PORTION OF MEASURE<S> YOUR FROM WITH <THE> ME [THE] UTTERANCE OF YAHWEH THAT YOU HAVE FORGOTTEN <OBJ.> ME AND YOU HAVE TRUSTED IN <THE> FALSEHOOD 25This is your lot, the portion I have measured to you,” declares the LORD, “because you have forgotten Me and trusted in falsehood.
26AND ALSO I I WILL STRIP OFF SKIRTS YOUR ON FACE YOUR AND IT WILL BE VISIBLE SHAME YOUR 26So I will pull your skirts up over your face, that your shame may be seen.
27ADULTERI<ES> YOUR AND NEIGHINGS YOUR [THE] WICKEDNESS OF PROSTITUTION YOUR ON HILLS IN THE FIELD I HAVE SEEN DETESTABLE THINGS YOUR WOE! TO <THE> YOU O JERUSALEM NOT YOU ARE CLEAN AFTER WHEN? YET 27Your adulteries and lustful neighings, your shameless prostitution on the hills and in the fields— I have seen your detestable acts. Woe to you, O Jerusalem! How long will you remain unclean?”
