15THUS HE SAYS YAHWEH OF HOSTS [THE] GOD OF ISRAEL HERE I [AM] ABOUT TO BRING TO THE CITY <THE> THIS AND ON ALL CITIES ITS <OBJ.> ALL THE CALAMITY WHICH I HAVE SPOKEN ON IT FOR THEY HAVE STIFFENED <OBJ.> NECK THEIR TO NOT TO HEAR <OBJ.> WORDS MY 15“This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘Behold, I am about to bring on this city and on all the villages around it every disaster I have pronounced against them, because they have stiffened their necks so as not to heed My words.’”
1AND HE HEARD PASHHUR [THE] SON OF IMMER THE PRIEST AND HE [WAS] AN OFFICER A CHIEF IN [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH <OBJ.> JEREMIAH PROPHESYING <OBJ.> THE WORDS <THE> THESE Pashhur Persecutes Jeremiah 1When Pashhur the priest, the son of Immer and the chief official in the house of the LORD, heard Jeremiah prophesying these things,
2AND HE STRUCK PASHHUR <OBJ.> JEREMIAH THE PROPHET AND HE PUT <OBJ.> HIM ON THE STOCK[S] WHICH [WAS] AT [THE] GATE OF BENJAMIN <THE> UPPER WHICH [WAS] IN [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH 2he had Jeremiah the prophet beaten and put in the stocks at the Upper Gate of Benjamin, which was by the house of the LORD.
3AND IT WAS FROM [THE] NEXT DAY AND HE BROUGHT OUT PASHHUR <OBJ.> JEREMIAH FROM THE STOCK[S] AND HE SAID TO HIM JEREMIAH NOT PASHHUR HE HAS CALLED YAHWEH NAME YOUR THAT EXCEPT TERROR FROM AROUND 3The next day, when Pashhur released Jeremiah from the stocks, Jeremiah said to him, “The LORD does not call you Pashhur, but Magor-missabib.*NoteCloseMagor-missabib means terror on every side or the man who lives in terror.
4FOR THUS HE SAYS YAHWEH HERE I [AM] ABOUT TO MAKE YOU INTO A TERROR TO YOURSELF AND TO ALL FRIENDS YOUR AND THEY WILL FALL BY [THE] SWORD OF ENEMIES THEIR AND EYES YOUR [WILL BE] LOOKING AND <OBJ.> ALL JUDAH I WILL GIVE IN [THE] HAND OF [THE] KING OF BABYLON AND HE WILL TAKE INTO EXILE THEM BABYLON TOWARDS AND HE WILL STRIKE DOWN THEM WITH THE SWORD 4For this is what the LORD says: ‘I will make you a terror to yourself and to all your friends. They will fall by the sword of their enemies before your very eyes And I will hand Judah over to the king of Babylon, and he will carry them away to Babylon and put them to the sword.
5AND I WILL GIVE <OBJ.> ALL [THE] WEALTH OF THE CITY <THE> THIS AND <OBJ.> ALL PROPERTY ITS AND <OBJ.> EVERY PRECIOUS THING ITS AND <OBJ.> ALL [THE] TREASURES OF [THE] KINGS OF JUDAH I WILL GIVE IN [THE] HAND OF ENEMIES THEIR AND THEY WILL PLUNDER THEM AND THEY WILL TAKE THEM AND THEY WILL BRING THEM BABYLON TOWARDS 5I will give away all the wealth of this city— all its products and valuables, and all the treasures of the kings of Judah— to their enemies. 6AND YOU O PASHHUR AND ALL [THOSE WHO] DWELL OF HOUSE YOUR YOU WILL GO IN <THE> CAPTIVITY AND BABYLON YOU WILL GO AND THERE YOU WILL DIE AND THERE YOU WILL BE BURIED YOU AND ALL FRIENDS YOUR WHOM YOU PROPHESIED TO <THE> THEM WITH <THE> FALSEHOOD 6And you, Pashhur, and all who live in your house, will go into captivity. You will go to Babylon, and there you will die and be buried— you and all your friends to whom you have prophesied these lies.’”
7YOU DECEIVED ME O YAHWEH AND I WAS DECEIVED YOU PREVAILED OVER ME AND YOU PREVAILED I HAVE BECOME <INTO> A LAUGHING STOCK ALL THE DAY ALL OF IT [IS] MOCKING <TO> <THE> ME Jeremiah’s Complaint 7You have deceived me, O LORD, and I was deceived. You have overcome me and prevailed. I am a laughingstock all day long; everyone mocks me.
8FOR AS OFTEN AS I SPEAK I CRY OUT VIOLENCE AND HAVOC I PROCLAIM FOR IT HAS BECOME [THE] WORD OF YAHWEH FOR <THE> ME <INTO> A REPROACH AND <INTO> DERISION ALL THE DAY 8For whenever I speak, I cry out; I proclaim violence and destruction. For the word of the LORD has become to me a reproach and derision all day long.
9AND I WILL SAY NOT I WILL REMEMBER HIM AND NOT I WILL SPEAK AGAIN IN NAME HIS AND IT WILL BECOME IN HEART MY LIKE A FIRE BURNING SHUT UP IN BONES MY AND I WILL BE WEARY TO HOLD [IT] IN AND NOT I WILL BE ABLE 9If I say, “I will not mention Him or speak any more in His name,” His message becomes a fire burning in my heart, shut up in my bones, and I become weary of holding it in, and I cannot prevail.
10FOR I HAVE HEARD [THE] WHISPERING OF MANY [PEOPLE] TERROR [IS] FROM ROUND ABOUT TELL AND LET US TELL ABOUT HIM EVERY <THE> PERSON OF PEACE MY [ARE] [THE] WATCHERS OF STUMBLING MY PERHAPS HE WILL BE DECEIVED AND WE WILL PREVAIL TO <THE> HIM AND WE WILL TAKE VENGEANCE OUR FROM HIM 10For I have heard the whispering of many: “Terror is on every side! Report him; let us report him!” All my trusted friends watch for my fall: “Perhaps he will be deceived so that we may prevail against him and take our vengeance upon him.”
11AND YAHWEH [IS] WITH ME LIKE A WARRIOR RUTHLESS THERE- -FORE PERSECUTORS MY THEY WILL STUMBLE AND NOT THEY WILL PREVAIL THEY WILL BE ASHAMED EXCEEDINGLY FOR NOT THEY WILL SUCCEED IGNOMINY OF PERPETUITY NOT IT WILL BE FORGOTTEN 11But the LORD is with me like a fearsome warrior. Therefore, my persecutors will stumble and will not prevail. Since they have not succeeded, they will be utterly put to shame, with an everlasting disgrace that will never be forgotten.
12AND O YAHWEH OF HOSTS [WHO] TESTS [THE] RIGHTEOUS [WHO] SEES KIDNEYS AND HEART LET ME SEE VENGEANCE YOUR FROM <THE> THEM FOR TO YOU I HAVE MADE KNOWN <OBJ.> CASE MY 12O LORD of Hosts, who examines the righteous, who sees the heart*NoteCloseHebrew kidneys and mind, let me see Your vengeance upon them, for to You I have committed my cause.
13SING TO YAHWEH PRAISE <OBJ.> YAHWEH FOR HE HAS DELIVERED <OBJ.> [THE] LIFE OF [THE] NEEDY FROM [THE] HAND OF EVIL-DOERS 13Sing to the LORD! Praise the LORD! For He rescues the life of the needy from the hands of evildoers.
14[IS] CURSED THE DAY WHEN I WAS BORN ON <THE> IT [THE] DAY WHEN SHE BORE ME MOTHER MY MAY NOT IT BE BLESSED 14Cursed be the day I was born May the day my mother bore me never be blessed.
15[BE] CURSED THE PERSON WHO HE BORE [THE] NEWS <OBJ.> FATHER MY <TO> SAYING HE HAS BEEN BORN TO <THE> YOU A SON A MALE SURELY <MAKE REJOICE> HE MADE REJOICE HIM 15Cursed be the man who brought my father the news, saying, “A son is born to you,” bringing him great joy.
16AND HE WILL BE THE PERSON <THE> THAT LIKE THE CITIES WHICH HE OVERTHREW YAHWEH AND NOT HE HAD COMPASSION AND HE WILL HEAR A CRY OF DISTRESS IN THE MORNING AND A SHOUT OF ALARM AT [THE] TIME OF NOON<S> 16May that man be like the cities that the LORD overthrew without compassion. May he hear an outcry in the morning and a battle cry at noon,
17THAT NOT HE KILLED ME FROM [THE] WOMB AND SHE BECAME FOR <THE> ME MOTHER MY GRAVE MY AND WOMB HER [WAS] PREGNANT OF PERPETUITY 17because he did not kill me in the womb so that my mother might have been my grave, and her womb forever enlarged.
18<TO> WHY? THIS FROM [THE] WOMB DID I COME FORTH TO SEE TROUBLE AND SORROW AND THEY HAVE COME TO AN END IN SHAME DAYS MY 18Why did I come out of the womb to see only trouble and sorrow, and to end my days in shame?
