23AND YOU O YAHWEH YOU KNOW <OBJ.> ALL PLAN THEIR ON ME FOR <THE> DEATH MAY NOT YOU ATONE ON INIQUITY THEIR AND SIN THEIR FROM TO BEFORE YOU MAY NOT YOU WIPE OUT AND LET THEM BE OVERTHROWN <TO> BEFORE YOU IN [THE] TIME OF ANGER YOUR DO WITH <THE> THEM 23But You, O LORD, know all their deadly plots against me. Do not wipe out their guilt or blot out their sin from Your sight. Let them be overthrown before You; deal with them in the time of Your anger.
1THUS HE SAID YAHWEH GO AND YOU WILL BUY A BOTTLE OF A POTTER OF EARTHENWARE AND SOME OF [THE] ELDERS OF THE PEOPLE AND SOME OF [THE] ELDERS OF THE PRIESTS The Broken Jar 1This is what the LORD says: “Go and buy a clay jar from a potter. Take some of the elders of the people and leaders of the priests,
2AND YOU WILL GO OUT TO [THE] VALLEY OF BEN HINNOM WHICH [IS AT] [THE] ENTRANCE OF [THE] GATE OF THE POTSHERD AND YOU WILL PROCLAIM THERE <OBJ.> THE WORDS WHICH I WILL SPEAK TO YOU 2and go out to the Valley of Ben-hinnom near the entrance of the Potsherd Gate. Proclaim there the words I speak to you,
3AND YOU WILL SAY HEAR [THE] WORD OF YAHWEH O KINGS OF JUDAH AND [THE] INHABITANTS OF JERUSALEM THUS HE SAYS YAHWEH OF HOSTS [THE] GOD OF ISRAEL HERE I [AM] ABOUT TO BRING CALAMITY ON THE PLACE <THE> THIS WHICH EVERY [ONE WHO] HEARS OF IT THEY WILL TINGLE EARS HIS 3saying, ‘Hear the word of the LORD, O kings of Judah and residents of Jerusalem. This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: I am going to bring such disaster on this place that the ears of all who hear of it will ring,
4BECAUSE THAT THEY HAVE FORSAKEN ME AND THEY HAVE TREATED AS FOREIGN <OBJ.> THE PLACE <THE> THIS AND THEY HAVE MADE SMOKE IN <THE> IT TO GODS OTHER WHICH NOT THEY KNEW THEM THEY AND ANCESTORS THEIR AND [THE] KINGS OF JUDAH AND THEY HAVE FILLED <OBJ.> THE PLACE <THE> THIS [THE] BLOOD OF INNOCENT [ONES] 4because they have abandoned Me and made this a foreign place. They have burned incense in this place to other gods that neither they nor their fathers nor the kings of Judah have ever known. They have filled this place with the blood of the innocent.
5AND THEY HAVE BUILT <OBJ.> [THE] HIGH PLACES OF <THE> BAAL TO BURN <OBJ.> CHILDREN THEIR IN THE FIRE BURNT OFFERINGS TO <THE> BAAL WHICH NOT I COMMANDED AND NOT I SPOKE AND NOT IT CAME UP ON HEART MY 5They have built high places to Baal on which to burn their children in the fire as offerings to Baal— something I never commanded or mentioned, nor did it even enter My mind.
6<TO> THEREFORE HERE! DAYS [ARE] COMING [THE] UTTERANCE OF YAHWEH AND NOT IT WILL BE CALLED TO THE PLACE <THE> THIS AGAIN <THE> TOPHETH AND [THE] VALLEY OF BEN HINNOM THAT EXCEPT [THE] VALLEY OF <THE> SLAUGHTER 6So behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when this place will no longer be called Topheth or the Valley of Ben-hinnom, but the Valley of Slaughter.
7AND I WILL MAKE VOID <OBJ.> [THE] PLAN OF JUDAH AND JERUSALEM IN THE PLACE <THE> THIS AND I WILL MAKE FALL THEM BY THE SWORD <TO> BEFORE ENEMIES THEIR AND BY [THE] HAND OF [THOSE WHO] SEEK <OF> LIFE THEIR AND I WILL GIVE <OBJ.> CORPSE[S] THEIR TO FOOD TO [THE] BIRD[S] OF THE HEAVENS AND TO [THE] ANIMAL[S] OF THE EARTH 7And in this place I will ruin*NoteCloseThe Hebrew term for ruin sounds like the Hebrew for jar; see verses 1 and 10. the plans of Judah and Jerusalem. I will make them fall by the sword before their enemies, by the hands of those who seek their lives, and I will give their carcasses as food to the birds of the air and the beasts of the earth.
8AND I WILL MAKE <OBJ.> THE CITY <THE> THIS INTO A WASTE AND INTO A HISSING EVERY [ONE WHO] PASSES BY AT IT HE WILL BE APPALLED AND HE MAY HISS ON ALL WOUNDS ITS 8I will make this city a desolation and an object of scorn.*NoteCloseLiterally and a hissing All who pass by will be appalled and will scoff at all her wounds.
9AND I WILL MAKE EAT THEM <OBJ.> [THE] FLESH OF SONS THEIR AND <OBJ.> [THE] FLESH OF DAUGHTERS THEIR AND EVERYONE [THE] FLESH OF NEIGHBOR HIS THEY WILL EAT IN [THE] SIEGE AND IN [THE] DISTRESS WHICH THEY WILL PRESS <TO> <THE> THEM ENEMIES THEIR AND [THOSE WHO] SEEK <OF> LIFE THEIR 9I will make them eat the flesh of their sons and daughters, and they will eat one another’s flesh in the siege and distress inflicted on them by their enemies who seek their lives.’
10AND YOU WILL BREAK THE BOTTLE TO [THE] EYES OF THE MEN WHO GO WITH YOU 10Then you are to shatter the jar in the presence of the men who accompany you,
11AND YOU WILL SAY TO THEM THUS HE SAYS YAHWEH OF HOSTS THUS I WILL BREAK <OBJ.> THE PEOPLE <THE> THIS AND <OBJ.> THE CITY <THE> THIS JUST AS SOMEONE BREAKS <OBJ.> [THE] VESSEL OF THE POTTER WHICH NOT IT WILL BE ABLE TO BE REPAIRED AGAIN AND IN TOPHETH PEOPLE WILL BURY FROM NOT ROOM TO BURY 11and you are to proclaim to them that this is what the LORD of Hosts says: I will shatter this nation and this city, like one shatters a potter’s jar that can never again be repaired. They will bury the dead in Topheth until there is no more room to bury them.
12THUS I WILL DO TO THE PLACE <THE> THIS [THE] UTTERANCE OF YAHWEH AND TO INHABITANTS ITS AND TO MAKE <OBJ.> THE CITY <THE> THIS LIKE TOPHETH 12This is what I will do to this place and to its residents, declares the LORD. I will make this city like Topheth.
13AND THEY WILL BE [THE] HOUSES OF JERUSALEM AND [THE] HOUSES OF [THE] KINGS OF JUDAH LIKE [THE] PLACE OF <THE> TOPHETH THE UNCLEAN [THINGS] TO ALL THE HOUSES WHICH PEOPLE MADE SMOKE ON ROOFS THEIR TO ALL [THE] HOST OF THE HEAVENS AND THEY POURED OUT DRINK OFFERINGS TO GODS OTHER 13The houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah will be defiled like that place, Topheth— all the houses on whose rooftops they burned incense to all the host of heaven and poured out drink offerings to other gods.”
14AND HE CAME JEREMIAH FROM <THE> TOPHETH WHERE HE HAD SENT HIM YAHWEH THERE TO PROPHESY AND HE STOOD IN [THE] COURT OF [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH AND HE SAID TO ALL THE PEOPLE 14Then Jeremiah returned from Topheth, where the LORD had sent him to prophesy, and he stood in the courtyard of the house of the LORD and proclaimed to all the people,
15THUS HE SAYS YAHWEH OF HOSTS [THE] GOD OF ISRAEL HERE I [AM] ABOUT TO BRING TO THE CITY <THE> THIS AND ON ALL CITIES ITS <OBJ.> ALL THE CALAMITY WHICH I HAVE SPOKEN ON IT FOR THEY HAVE STIFFENED <OBJ.> NECK THEIR TO NOT TO HEAR <OBJ.> WORDS MY 15“This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘Behold, I am about to bring on this city and on all the villages around it every disaster I have pronounced against them, because they have stiffened their necks so as not to heed My words.’”
