24NOT IT WILL TURN BACK [THE] BURNING OF [THE] ANGER OF YAHWEH UNTIL HAS BROUGHT ABOUT HE AND UNTIL HAS CARRIED OUT HE [THE] PURPOSES OF HEART HIS AT [THE] END OF THE DAYS YOU WILL UNDERSTAND <IN> <THE> IT 24The fierce anger of the LORD will not turn back until He has fully accomplished the purposes of His heart. In the days to come you will understand this.
1AT THE TIME <THE> THAT [THE] UTTERANCE OF YAHWEH I WILL BECOME <INTO> GOD FOR ALL [THE] CLANS OF ISRAEL AND THEY THEY WILL BECOME FOR <THE> ME <INTO> A PEOPLE Mourning Turned to Joy (Matthew 2:16–18) 1“At that time,” declares the LORD, “I will be the God of all the families of Israel, and they will be My people.”
2THUS HE SAYS YAHWEH IT FOUND FAVOR IN THE WILDERNESS [THE] PEOPLE OF [THE] SURVIVORS OF [THE] SWORD I WILL GO TO GIVE REST IT ISRAEL 2This is what the LORD says: “The people who survived the sword found favor in the wilderness when Israel went to find rest.”
3FROM A DISTANCE YAHWEH HE APPEARED TO <THE> ME AND A LOVE OF PERPETUITY I HAVE LOVED YOU THERE- -FORE I HAVE PROLONGED TO YOU COVENANT LOYALTY 3The LORD appeared to us in the past, saying:*NoteCloseOr The LORD appeared to him from afar, saying “I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have drawn you with loving devotion.
4AGAIN I WILL BUILD YOU AND YOU WILL BE REBUILT O VIRGIN OF ISRAEL AGAIN YOU WILL ORNAMENT YOURSELF TAMBOURINES YOUR AND YOU WILL GO FORTH IN [THE] DANCING OF MERRY MAKERS 4Again I will build you, and you will be rebuilt, O Virgin Israel. Again you will take up your tambourines and go out in joyful dancing.
5AGAIN YOU WILL PLANT VINEYARDS ON [THE] HILLS OF SAMARIA THEY WILL PLANT PLANTERS AND THEY WILL PUT [THEM] TO USE 5Again you will plant vineyards on the hills of Samaria; the farmers will plant and enjoy the fruit.
6FOR THERE [WILL BE] A DAY [WHEN] THEY WILL CALL OUT WATCHMEN IN [THE] HILL COUNTRY OF EPHRAIM ARISE SO WE MAY GO UP ZION TO YAHWEH GOD OUR 6For there will be a day when watchmen will call out on the hills of Ephraim, ‘Arise, let us go up to Zion, to the LORD our God!’”
7FOR THUS HE SAYS YAHWEH CRY OUT OF JACOB GLADNESS AND SHOUT FOR JOY ON [THE] CHIEF OF THE NATIONS MAKE A PROCLAMATION PRAISE AND SAY SAVE O YAHWEH <OBJ.> PEOPLE YOUR <OBJ.> [THE] REMNANT OF ISRAEL 7For this is what the LORD says: “Sing with joy for Jacob; shout for the foremost of the nations! Make your praises heard, and say, ‘O LORD, save Your people, the remnant of Israel!’
8HERE I [AM] ABOUT TO BRING <OBJ.> THEM FROM A LAND OF [THE] NORTH AND I WILL GATHER THEM FROM [THE] REMOTEST PARTS OF [THE] EARTH [WILL BE] AMONG <THE> THEM [THE] BLIND AND [THE] LAME [THE] PREGNANT AND [ONE] GIVING BIRTH ALIKE A COMPANY GREAT THEY WILL RETURN HITHER 8Behold, I will bring them from the land of the north and gather them from the farthest parts of the earth, including the blind and the lame, expectant mothers and women in labor. They will return as a great assembly!
9WITH WEEPING THEY WILL COME AND WITH SUPPLICATIONS I WILL BRING THEM I WILL LEAD THEM TO TORRENTS OF WATER ON A PATH STRAIGHT NOT THEY WILL STUMBLE IN <THE> IT FOR I HAVE BECOME OF ISRAEL <INTO> A FATHER AND EPHRAIM [IS] FIRSTBORN MY HE 9They will come with weeping, and by their supplication I will lead them; I will make them walk beside streams of waters, on a level path where they will not stumble For I am Israel’s Father, and Ephraim is My firstborn
10HEAR [THE] WORD OF YAHWEH O NATIONS AND DECLARE IN THE ISLANDS FROM A DISTANCE AND SAY [THE] [ONE WHO] SCATTERED OF ISRAEL HE WILL GATHER IT AND HE WILL KEEP IT LIKE A SHEPHERD FLOCK HIS 10Hear, O nations, the word of the LORD, and proclaim it in distant coastlands: “The One who scattered Israel will gather them and keep them as a shepherd keeps his flock.
11FOR HE HAS RANSOMED YAHWEH <OBJ.> JACOB AND HE HAS REDEEMED IT FROM [THE] HAND OF [ONE TOO] STRONG FOR IT 11For the LORD has ransomed Jacob and redeemed him from the hand that had overpowered him.
12AND THEY WILL COME AND THEY WILL CRY OUT FOR JOY ON [THE] HEIGHT OF ZION AND THEY WILL BE RADIANT BECAUSE OF [THE] GOOD THING[S] OF YAHWEH ON GRAIN AND ON NEW WINE AND ON FRESH OIL AND ON [THE] YOUNG OF [THE] FLOCK AND HERD AND IT WILL BE LIFE THEIR LIKE A GARDEN WATERED AND NOT THEY WILL REPEAT TO LANGUISH AGAIN 12They will come and shout for joy on the heights of Zion; they will be radiant over the bounty of the LORD— the grain, new wine, and oil, and the young of the flocks and herds. Their life will be like a well-watered garden, and never again will they languish.
13THEN SHE WILL REJOICE A VIRGIN WITH DANCING AND YOUNG MEN AND OLD [MEN] ALIKE AND I WILL TURN MOURNING THEIR INTO JOY AND I WILL COMFORT THEM AND I WILL MAKE GLAD THEM FROM SORROW THEIR 13Then the maidens will rejoice with dancing, young men and old as well. I will turn their mourning into joy, and give them comfort and joy for their sorrow.
14AND I WILL SATISFY [THE] APPETITE OF THE PRIESTS FATNESS AND PEOPLE MY <OBJ.> GOOD THING[S] MY THEY WILL BE SATISFIED [THE] UTTERANCE OF YAHWEH 14I will fill the souls of the priests abundantly, and will fill My people with My goodness,” declares the LORD.
15THUS HE SAYS YAHWEH A VOICE IN RAMAH [IS] HEARD A MOURNING SONG WEEPING OF BITTERNESS<ES> RACHEL [IS] WEEPING ON CHILDREN HER SHE HAS REFUSED TO BE COMFORTED ON CHILDREN HER FOR THERE NOT [IS] HE 15This is what the LORD says: “A voice is heard in Ramah, mourning and great weeping, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted because they are no more.”*NoteCloseCited in Matthew 2:18
16THUS HE SAYS YAHWEH RESTRAIN VOICE YOUR FROM WEEPING AND EYES YOUR FROM TEAR[S] FOR THERE [WILL BE] A REWARD FOR WORK YOUR [THE] UTTERANCE OF YAHWEH AND THEY WILL RETURN FROM [THE] LAND OF [THE] ENEMY 16This is what the LORD says: “Keep your voice from weeping and your eyes from tears, for the reward for your work will come, declares the LORD. Then your children will return from the land of the enemy.
17AND THERE [IS] HOPE FOR FUTURE YOUR [THE] UTTERANCE OF YAHWEH AND THEY WILL RETURN CHILDREN TO OWN TERRITORY THEIR 17So there is hope for your future, declares the LORD, and your children will return to their own land.
18CERTAINLY <TO HEAR> I HAVE HEARD EPHRAIM BEMOANING ITSELF YOU HAVE DISCIPLINED ME AND I WAS DISCIPLINED LIKE A CALF [WHICH] NOT IT HAD BEEN TRAINED RESTORE ME SO LET ME RETURN FOR YOU [ARE] YAHWEH GOD MY 18I have surely heard Ephraim’s*NoteCloseThat is, the northern kingdom of Israel; also in verse 20 moaning: ‘You disciplined me severely, like an untrained calf. Restore me, that I may return, for You are the LORD my God.
19FOR AFTER TURNED AWAY I I REPENTED AND AFTER WAS INSTRUCTED I I SLAPPED ON A THIGH I WAS ASHAMED AND ALSO I WAS HUMILIATED FOR I BORE [THE] REPROACH OF YOUTH<S> MY 19After I returned, I repented; and after I was instructed, I struck my thigh in grief. I was ashamed and humiliated because I bore the disgrace of my youth.’
20¿ A SON DEAR OF ME [IS] EPHRAIM OR? A CHILD OF DELIGHT<S> FOR AS OFTEN AS SPEAK I IN <THE> HIM CERTAINLY <TO REMEMBER> I REMEMBER HIM STILL THERE- -FORE THEY ARE IN A TUMULT INWARD PARTS MY FOR <THE> HIM SURELY <HAVE COMPASSION> I WILL HAVE COMPASSION ON HIM [THE] UTTERANCE OF YAHWEH 20Is not Ephraim a precious son to Me, a delightful child? 21SET UP FOR <THE> YOURSELF SIGNPOSTS PLACE FOR <THE> YOURSELF GUIDEPOSTS SET HEART YOUR TO THE HIGHWAY [THE] WAY [WHICH] YOU WENT RETURN O VIRGIN OF ISRAEL RETURN TO CITIES YOUR THESE 21“Set up the road markers, put up the signposts. Keep the highway in mind, the road you have traveled. Return, O Virgin Israel, return to these cities of yours.
22UNTIL WHEN? WILL YOU VACILLATE! O DAUGHTER <THE> APOSTATE FOR HE HAS CREATED YAHWEH A NEW [THING] ON THE EARTH A FEMALE SHE WILL SURROUND A MAN 22How long will you wander, O faithless daughter? For the LORD has created a new thing in the land— a woman will shelter*NoteCloseOr will surround or will return to a man.”
23THUS HE SAYS YAHWEH OF HOSTS [THE] GOD OF ISRAEL AGAIN PEOPLE WILL SAY <OBJ.> THE WORD <THE> THIS IN [THE] LAND OF JUDAH AND IN CITIES ITS WHEN TURN BACK I <OBJ.> CAPTIVITY THEIR MAY HE BLESS YOU YAHWEH O ABODE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS O MOUNTAIN OF <THE> HOLINESS 23This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: “When I restore them from captivity,*NoteCloseOr restore their fortunes they will once again speak this word in the land of Judah and in its cities: ‘May the LORD bless you, O righteous dwelling place, O holy mountain.’
24AND THEY WILL DWELL IN <THE> IT JUDAH AND ALL CITIES ITS TOGETHER FARMERS AND THEY WILL JOURNEY WITH <THE> FLOCK 24And Judah and all its cities will dwell together in the land, the farmers and those who move with the flocks,
25FOR I GIVE WATER TO [THE] THROAT OF [THE] WEARY AND EVERY PERSON [WHO] IT HAS BECOME FAINT I FILL 25for I will refresh the weary soul and replenish all who are weak.”
26ON THIS I AWOKE AND I LOOKED AND SLEEP MY IT WAS PLEASING TO <THE> ME The New Covenant (Hebrews 8:6–13) 26At this I awoke and looked around. My sleep had been most pleasant to me.
27HERE! DAYS [ARE] COMING [THE] UTTERANCE OF YAHWEH AND I WILL SOW <OBJ.> [THE] HOUSE OF ISRAEL AND <OBJ.> [THE] HOUSE OF JUDAH [THE] SEED OF HUMANKIND AND [THE] SEED OF ANIMAL[S] 27The days are coming,” declares the LORD, “when I will sow the house of Israel and the house of Judah with the seed of man and of beast.
28AND IT WILL BE JUST AS I KEPT WATCH OVER THEM TO PLUCK UP AND TO PULL DOWN AND TO TEAR DOWN AND TO DESTROY AND TO DO HARM SO I WILL KEEP WATCH OVER THEM TO BUILD AND TO PLANT [THE] UTTERANCE OF YAHWEH 28Just as I watched over them to uproot and tear down, to demolish, destroy, and bring disaster, so I will watch over them to build and to plant,” declares the LORD.
29IN THE DAYS <THE> THOSE NOT PEOPLE WILL SAY AGAIN FATHERS THEY HAVE EATEN SOUR GRAPE[S] AND [THE] TEETH OF CHILDREN THEY WILL BE BLUNT 29“In those days, it will no longer be said: ‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the teeth of the children are set on edge.’
30THAT EXCEPT EVERYONE FOR OWN INIQUITY HIS HE WILL DIE EVERY <THE> PERSON WHO EATS THE SOUR GRAPE[S] THEY WILL BE BLUNT TEETH HIS 30Instead, each will die for his own iniquity. If anyone eats the sour grapes, his own teeth will be set on edge.
31HERE! DAYS [ARE] COMING [THE] UTTERANCE OF YAHWEH AND I WILL MAKE WITH [THE] HOUSE OF ISRAEL AND WITH [THE] HOUSE OF JUDAH A COVENANT NEW 31Behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah.
32NOT LIKE THE COVENANT WHICH I MADE WITH ANCESTORS THEIR ON [THE] DAY TOOK HOLD I ON HAND THEIR TO BRING OUT THEM FROM [THE] LAND OF EGYPT WHO THEY THEY BROKE <OBJ.> COVENANT MY AND I I WAS A HUSBAND OVER <THE> THEM [THE] UTTERANCE OF YAHWEH 32It will not be like the covenant I made with their fathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt— a covenant they broke though I was a husband to them,*NoteCloseHebrew; LXX for they did not abide in My covenant, and I disregarded them; see also Syriac. ” declares the LORD.
33THAT THIS [IS] THE COVENANT WHICH I WILL MAKE WITH [THE] HOUSE OF ISRAEL AFTER THE DAYS <THE> THOSE [THE] UTTERANCE OF YAHWEH I WILL PUT <OBJ.> LAW MY IN INNER BEING THEIR AND ON HEART THEIR I WILL WRITE IT AND I WILL BECOME FOR <THE> THEM <INTO> GOD AND THEY THEY WILL BECOME FOR <THE> ME <INTO> A PEOPLE 33“But this is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the LORD. I will put My law in their minds and inscribe it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they will be My people.
34AND NOT THEY WILL TEACH AGAIN EACH <OBJ.> NEIGHBOR HIS AND EACH <OBJ.> BROTHER HIS <TO> SAYING KNOW <OBJ.> YAHWEH FOR ALL OF THEM THEY WILL KNOW <OBJ.> ME <TO> FROM LITTLE THEIR AND UNTO GREAT THEIR [THE] UTTERANCE OF YAHWEH THAT I WILL FORGIVE <TO> INIQUITY THEIR AND <TO> SIN THEIR NOT I WILL REMEMBER AGAIN 34No longer will each man teach his neighbor or his brother, saying, ‘Know the LORD,’ because they will all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the LORD. 35THUS HE SAYS YAHWEH [WHO] GIVES [THE] SUN FOR LIGHT BY DAY [THE] FIXED ORDER<S> OF [THE] MOON AND [THE] STARS FOR LIGHT NIGHT [WHO] STIRS UP THE SEA AND THEY ROARED WAVES ITS [IS] YAHWEH OF HOSTS NAME HIS 35Thus says the LORD, who gives the sun for light by day, who sets in order the moon and stars for light by night, who stirs up the sea so that its waves roar— the LORD of Hosts is His name:
36IF THEY WILL DEPART THE FIXED ORDER<S> <THE> THESE FROM TO BEFORE ME [THE] UTTERANCE OF YAHWEH ALSO [THE] OFFSPRING OF ISRAEL THEY WILL CEASE FROM BEING A NATION <TO> BEFORE ME ALL THE DAYS 36“Only if this fixed order departed from My presence, declares the LORD, would Israel’s descendants ever cease to be a nation before Me.”
37THUS HE SAYS YAHWEH IF THEY WILL BE MEASURED [THE] HEAVENS FROM TO ABOVE <TOWARDS> SO THEY MAY BE EXPLORED [THE] FOUNDATIONS OF [THE] EARTH <TO> DOWNWARDS ALSO I I WILL REJECT <IN> ALL [THE] OFFSPRING OF ISRAEL ON ALL THAT THEY HAVE DONE [THE] UTTERANCE OF YAHWEH 37This is what the LORD says: “Only if the heavens above could be measured and the foundations of the earth below searched out would I reject all of Israel’s descendants because of all they have done,” declares the LORD.
38HERE! DAYS [ARE] COMING [THE] UTTERANCE OF YAHWEH AND IT WILL BE REBUILT THE CITY FOR YAHWEH FROM [THE] TOWER OF HANANEL [THE] GATE OF THE CORNER 38“The days are coming,”*NoteCloseLiterally Behold, the days; alternate MT reading Behold, the days are coming declares the LORD, “when this city will be rebuilt for Me, from the tower of Hananel to the Corner Gate.
39AND IT WILL GO OUT AGAIN [THE] LINE OF <THE> MEASUREMENT BEFORE ITSELF TO [THE] HILL OF GAREB AND IT WILL TURN GOAH TOWARDS 39The measuring line will once again stretch out straight to the hill of Gareb and then turn toward Goah.
40AND ALL THE VALLEY OF THE CORPSES AND THE FATTY ASH AND ALL THE TERRACED FIELDS TO [THE] WADI OF KIDRON TO [THE] CORNER OF [THE] GATE OF THE HORSES EAST -WARD [WILL BE] HOLY TO YAHWEH NOT IT WILL BE PLUCKED UP AND NOT IT WILL BE TORN DOWN AGAIN FOR EVER 40The whole valley of the dead bodies and ashes, and all the fields as far as the Kidron Valley, to the corner of the Horse Gate to the east, will be holy to the LORD. It will never again be uprooted or demolished.”
