16AND HE SAID GEDALIAH [THE] SON OF AHIKAM TO JOHANAN [THE] SON OF KAREAH MAY NOT YOU DO <OBJ.> THE THING <THE> THIS FOR FALSEHOOD YOU [ARE] SPEAKING CONCERNING ISHMAEL 16But Gedaliah son of Ahikam said to Johanan son of Kareah, “Do not do such a thing What you are saying about Ishmael is a lie.”
1AND IT WAS IN THE MONTH <THE> SEVENTH HE CAME ISHMAEL [THE] SON OF NETHANIAH [THE] SON OF ELISHAMA ONE OF [THE] OFFSPRING OF <THE> ROYALTY AND [THE] CHIEFS OF THE KING AND TEN MEN [WHO WERE] WITH <THE> HIM TO GEDALIAH [THE] SON OF AHIKAM <THE> MIZPAH TOWARDS AND THEY WERE EATING THERE FOOD TOGETHER AT <THE> MIZPAH The Murder of Gedaliah (2 Kings 25:25–26) 1In the seventh month, Ishmael son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama, who was a member of the royal family and one of the king’s chief officers, came with ten men to Gedaliah son of Ahikam at Mizpah, and they ate a meal together there.
2AND HE AROSE ISHMAEL [THE] SON OF NETHANIAH AND [THE] TEN THE MEN WHO THEY WERE WITH HIM AND THEY STRUCK DOWN <OBJ.> GEDALIAH [THE] SON OF AHIKAM [THE] SON OF SHAPHAN WITH THE SWORD AND HE KILLED <OBJ.> HIM WHOM HE HAD APPOINTED [THE] KING OF BABYLON OVER THE LAND 2Then Ishmael son of Nethaniah and the ten men who were with him got up and struck down Gedaliah son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, with the sword, killing the one whom the king of Babylon had appointed to govern the land.
3AND <OBJ.> ALL THE JEWS WHO THEY WERE WITH HIM WITH GEDALIAH AT <THE> MIZPAH AND <OBJ.> THE CHALDEANS WHO THEY WERE FOUND THERE <OBJ.> [THE] MEN OF <THE> WAR HE STRUCK DOWN ISHMAEL 3Ishmael also killed all the Jews who were with Gedaliah at Mizpah, as well as the Chaldean*NoteCloseOr Babylonian soldiers who were there.
4AND IT WAS ON THE DAY <THE> SECOND OF KILLING <OBJ.> GEDALIAH AND ANYONE NOT HE KNEW 4On the second day after the murder of Gedaliah, when no one yet knew about it,
5AND THEY CAME MEN FROM SHECHEM FROM SHILOH AND FROM SAMARIA EIGHTY MAN SHAVEN OF BEARD AND TORN OF CLOTHES AND HAVING CUT THEMSELVES AND AN OFFERING AND FRANKINCENSE IN HAND THEIR TO BRING [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH 5eighty men who had shaved off their beards, torn their garments, and cut themselves came from Shechem, Shiloh, and Samaria, carrying grain offerings and frankincense for the house of the LORD.
6AND HE WENT OUT ISHMAEL [THE] SON OF NETHANIAH TO MEET THEM FROM <THE> MIZPAH GOING CONTINUALLY <TO GO> AND WEEPING AND IT WAS WHEN MET <OBJ.> THEM AND HE SAID TO THEM COME TO GEDALIAH [THE] SON OF AHIKAM 6And Ishmael son of Nethaniah went out from Mizpah to meet them, weeping as he went. When Ishmael encountered the men, he said, “Come to Gedaliah son of Ahikam.”
7AND IT WAS WHEN CAME THEY INTO [THE] MIDDLE OF THE CITY AND HE SLAUGHTERED THEM ISHMAEL [THE] SON OF NETHANIAH INTO [THE] MIDDLE OF THE CISTERN HE AND THE MEN WHO [WERE] WITH HIM 7And when they came into the city, Ishmael son of Nethaniah and the men with him slaughtered them and threw them into a cistern.
8AND TEN MEN THEY WERE FOUND AMONG <THE> THEM AND THEY SAID TO ISHMAEL MAY NOT YOU KILL US FOR THERE IS [BELONGING] TO <THE> US TREASURES IN THE FIELD WHEAT<S> AND BARLEY<S> AND OIL AND HONEY AND HE REFRAINED AND NOT HE KILLED THEM IN AMONG RELATIVES THEIR 8But ten of the men among them said to Ishmael, “Do not kill us, for we have hidden treasure in the field— wheat, barley, oil, and honey!” So he refrained from killing them with the others.
9AND THE CISTERN WHERE HE THREW THERE ISHMAEL <OBJ.> ALL [THE] CORPSES OF THE MEN WHOM HE HAD STRUCK DOWN BY [THE] HAND OF GEDALIAH IT [WAS [THE] ONE] WHICH HE HAD MADE THE KING ASA <FROM> BECAUSE OF BAASHA [THE] KING OF ISRAEL <OBJ.> IT HE FILLED ISHMAEL [THE] SON OF NETHANIAH [THOSE] SLAIN 9Now the cistern into which Ishmael had thrown all the bodies of the men he had struck down along with Gedaliah was a large one that King Asa had made for fear of Baasha king of Israel. Ishmael son of Nethaniah filled it with the slain.
10AND HE TOOK CAPTIVE ISHMAEL <OBJ.> ALL [THE] REST OF THE PEOPLE WHICH [WAS] IN <THE> MIZPAH <OBJ.> [THE] DAUGHTERS OF THE KING AND <OBJ.> ALL THE PEOPLE WHO REMAINED AT <THE> MIZPAH WHOM HE HAD APPOINTED NEBUZARADAN [THE] CHIEF OF [THE] BODYGUARDS WITH GEDALIAH [THE] SON OF AHIKAM AND HE TOOK CAPTIVE THEM ISHMAEL [THE] SON OF NETHANIAH AND HE WENT TO PASS OVER TO [THE] PEOPLE OF AMMON 10Then Ishmael took captive all the remnant of the people of Mizpah— the daughters of the king along with all the others who remained in Mizpah— over whom Nebuzaradan captain of the guard had appointed Gedaliah son of Ahikam. Ishmael son of Nethaniah took them captive and set off to cross over to the Ammonites.
11AND HE HEARD JOHANAN [THE] SON OF KAREAH AND ALL [THE] COMMANDERS OF THE ARMIES WHO [WERE] WITH HIM <OBJ.> ALL THE EVIL WHICH HE HAD DONE ISHMAEL [THE] SON OF NETHANIAH Johanan Rescues the Captives 11When Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders of the armies with him heard of all the crimes that Ishmael son of Nethaniah had committed,
12AND THEY TOOK <OBJ.> ALL THE MEN AND THEY WENT TO DO BATTLE WITH ISHMAEL [THE] SON OF NETHANIAH AND THEY FOUND <OBJ.> HIM TO WATER GREAT WHICH [IS] IN GIBEON 12they took all their men and went to fight Ishmael son of Nethaniah. And they found him near the great pool in Gibeon.
13AND IT WAS WHEN SAW ALL THE PEOPLE WHICH [WAS] WITH ISHMAEL <OBJ.> JOHANAN [THE] SON OF KAREAH AND <OBJ.> ALL [THE] COMMANDERS OF THE ARMIES WHO [WERE] WITH HIM AND THEY WERE GLAD 13When all the people with Ishmael saw Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders of the army with him, they rejoiced,
14AND THEY TURNED ROUND ALL THE PEOPLE WHICH HE HAD TAKEN CAPTIVE ISHMAEL FROM <THE> MIZPAH AND THEY TURNED BACK AND THEY WENT TO JOHANAN [THE] SON OF KAREAH 14and all the people whom Ishmael had taken captive at Mizpah turned and went over to Johanan son of Kareah.
15AND ISHMAEL [THE] SON OF NETHANIAH HE ESCAPED WITH EIGHT MEN FROM BEFORE JOHANAN AND HE WENT TO [THE] PEOPLE OF AMMON 15But Ishmael son of Nethaniah and eight of his men escaped from Johanan and went to the Ammonites.
16AND HE TOOK JOHANAN [THE] SON OF KAREAH AND ALL [THE] COMMANDERS OF THE ARMIES WHO [WERE] WITH HIM <OBJ.> ALL [THE] REST OF THE PEOPLE WHICH HE HAD BROUGHT BACK FROM WITH ISHMAEL [THE] SON OF NETHANIAH FROM <THE> MIZPAH AFTER HE HAD STRUCK DOWN <OBJ.> GEDALIAH [THE] SON OF AHIKAM MEN [THE] MEN OF <THE> WAR AND WOMEN AND LITTLE ONE[S] AND COURT-OFFICIALS WHOM HE HAD BROUGHT BACK FROM GIBEON 16Then Johanan son of Kareah and all the commanders of the armies with him took the whole remnant of the people from Mizpah whom he had recovered from Ishmael son of Nethaniah after Ishmael had killed Gedaliah son of Ahikam: the soldiers, women, children, and court officials*NoteCloseOr eunuchs he had brought back from Gibeon.
17AND THEY WENT AND THEY REMAINED AT GERUTH KIMHAM WHICH [IS] BESIDE BETH- -LEHEM TO GO TO GO EGYPT 17And they went and stayed in Geruth Chimham, near Bethlehem, in order to proceed into Egypt
18FROM BEFORE THE CHALDEANS FOR THEY WERE AFRAID OF <BEFORE> THEM FOR HE HAD STRUCK DOWN ISHMAEL [THE] SON OF NETHANIAH <OBJ.> GEDALIAH [THE] SON OF AHIKAM WHOM HE HAD APPOINTED [THE] KING OF BABYLON OVER THE LAND 18to escape the Chaldeans.*NoteCloseThat is, the Babylonians For they were afraid of the Chaldeans because Ishmael son of Nethaniah had struck down Gedaliah son of Ahikam, whom the king of Babylon had appointed over the land.
