18FROM BEFORE THE CHALDEANS FOR THEY WERE AFRAID OF <BEFORE> THEM FOR HE HAD STRUCK DOWN ISHMAEL [THE] SON OF NETHANIAH <OBJ.> GEDALIAH [THE] SON OF AHIKAM WHOM HE HAD APPOINTED [THE] KING OF BABYLON OVER THE LAND 18to escape the Chaldeans.*NoteCloseThat is, the Babylonians For they were afraid of the Chaldeans because Ishmael son of Nethaniah had struck down Gedaliah son of Ahikam, whom the king of Babylon had appointed over the land.
1AND THEY APPROACHED ALL [THE] COMMANDERS OF THE ARMIES AND JOHANAN [THE] SON OF KAREAH AND JEZANIAH [THE] SON OF HOSHAIAH AND ALL THE PEOPLE FROM [THE] SMALL AND UNTO [THE] GREAT A Warning against Going to Egypt 1Then all the commanders of the forces, along with Johanan son of Kareah, Jezaniah*NoteCloseHebrew; LXX Azariah; see Jeremiah 43:2. son of Hoshaiah, and all the people from the least to the greatest, approached
2AND THEY SAID TO JEREMIAH THE PROPHET MAY IT FALL PLEASE SUPPLICATION OUR <TO> BEFORE YOU AND PRAY FOR US TO YAHWEH GOD YOUR FOR ALL THE REMNANT <THE> THIS FOR WE ARE LEFT A FEW FROM MANY JUST AS EYES YOUR [ARE] SEEING <OBJ.> US 2Jeremiah the prophet and said “May our petition come before you; pray to the LORD your God on behalf of this entire remnant. For few of us remain of the many, as you can see with your own eyes.
3SO HE MAY DECLARE TO <THE> US YAHWEH GOD YOUR <OBJ.> THE WAY WHICH WE WILL GO IN <THE> IT AND <OBJ.> THE THING WHICH WE WILL DO 3Pray that the LORD your God will tell us the way we should walk and the thing we should do.”
4AND HE SAID TO THEM JEREMIAH THE PROPHET I HAVE HEARD HERE I [AM] ABOUT TO PRAY TO YAHWEH GOD YOUR ACCORDING TO WORDS YOUR AND IT WILL BE EVERY <THE> WORD WHICH HE WILL ANSWER YAHWEH <OBJ.> YOU I WILL TELL TO <THE> YOU NOT I WILL WITHHOLD FROM <THE> YOU A WORD 4“I have heard you,” replied Jeremiah the prophet. “I will surely pray to the LORD your God as you request, and I will tell you everything that the LORD answers I will not withhold a word from you.”
5AND THEY THEY SAID TO JEREMIAH MAY HE BECOME YAHWEH ON <THE> US <INTO> A WITNESS OF TRUTH AND FAITHFUL IF NOT ACCORDING TO EVERY <THE> WORD WHICH HE WILL SEND YOU YAHWEH GOD YOUR TO US SO WE WILL DO 5Then they said to Jeremiah, “May the LORD be a true and faithful witness against us if we do not act upon every word that the LORD your God sends you to tell us.
6WHETHER GOOD AND OR BAD TO [THE] VOICE OF YAHWEH GOD OUR WHOM WE [ARE] SENDING <OBJ.> YOU TO HIM WE WILL LISTEN SO THAT THIS IT MAY GO WELL FOR <THE> US FOR WE WILL LISTEN TO [THE] VOICE OF YAHWEH GOD OUR 6Whether it is pleasant or unpleasant, we will obey the voice of the LORD our God to whom we are sending you, so that it may go well with us when we obey the voice of the LORD our God!”
7AND IT WAS FROM [THE] END OF TEN DAYS AND IT CAME [THE] WORD OF YAHWEH TO JEREMIAH 7After ten days the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah,
8AND HE SUMMONED <TO> JOHANAN [THE] SON OF KAREAH AND <TO> ALL [THE] COMMANDERS OF THE ARMIES WHO [WERE] WITH HIM AND <TO> ALL THE PEOPLE <TO> FROM [THE] SMALL AND UNTO [THE] GREAT 8and he summoned Johanan son of Kareah, all the commanders of the forces who were with him, and all the people from the least to the greatest.
9AND HE SAID TO THEM THUS HE SAYS YAHWEH [THE] GOD OF ISRAEL WHOM YOU SENT <OBJ.> ME TO HIM TO MAKE FALL SUPPLICATION YOUR <TO> BEFORE HIM 9Jeremiah told them, “Thus says the LORD, the God of Israel, to whom you sent me to present your petition:
10<IF> CERTAINLY [IF] <TO RETURN> YOU WILL REMAIN IN THE LAND <THE> THIS AND I WILL BUILD UP <OBJ.> YOU AND NOT I WILL TEAR [YOU] DOWN AND I WILL PLANT <OBJ.> YOU AND NOT I WILL PLUCK [YOU] UP FOR I AM GRIEVED CONCERNING THE HARM WHICH I HAVE DONE TO <THE> YOU 10‘If you will indeed stay in this land, then I will build you up and not tear you down; I will plant you and not uproot you, for I will relent of the disaster I have brought upon you.
11MAY NOT YOU BE AFRAID OF <THE FACE OF> [THE] KING OF BABYLON WHOM YOU [ARE] AFRAID OF <BEFORE> HIM MAY NOT YOU BE AFRAID FROM HIM [THE] UTTERANCE OF YAHWEH THAT [AM] WITH YOU I TO SAVE <OBJ.> YOU AND TO DELIVER <OBJ.> YOU FROM HAND HIS 11Do not be afraid of the king of Babylon, whom you now fear; do not be afraid of him, declares the LORD, for I am with you to save you and deliver you from him.
12SO I MAY GIVE TO <THE> YOU COMPASSION<S> AND HE WILL HAVE COMPASSION ON <OBJ.> YOU AND HE WILL RESTORE <OBJ.> YOU TO LAND YOUR 12And I will show you compassion, and he will have compassion on you and restore you to your own land.’
13AND IF [ARE] SAYING YOU NOT WE WILL REMAIN IN THE LAND <THE> THIS TO NOT TO LISTEN TO [THE] VOICE OF YAHWEH GOD YOUR 13But if you say, ‘We will not stay in this land,’ and you thus disobey the voice of the LORD your God,
14<TO> SAYING IN- DEED [THE] LAND OF EGYPT WE WILL GO WHERE NOT WE WILL SEE WARFARE AND [THE] SOUND OF A TRUMPET NOT WE WILL HEAR AND FOR <THE> BREAD NOT WE WILL BE HUNGRY AND THERE WE WILL DWELL 14and if you say, ‘No, but we will go to the land of Egypt and live there, where we will not see war or hear the sound of the ram’s horn or hunger for bread,’
15AND NOW <TO> THEREFORE HEAR [THE] WORD OF YAHWEH O REMNANT OF JUDAH THUS HE SAYS YAHWEH OF HOSTS [THE] GOD OF ISRAEL IF YOU REALLY <SET> YOU WILL SET! FACES YOUR TO GO EGYPT AND YOU WILL GO TO SOJOURN THERE 15then hear the word of the LORD, O remnant of Judah! This is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘If you are determined to go to Egypt and reside there,
16AND IT WILL BE THE SWORD WHICH YOU [ARE] AFRAID FROM IT THERE IT WILL OVERTAKE <OBJ.> YOU IN [THE] LAND OF EGYPT AND THE FAMINE WHICH YOU [ARE] ANXIOUS FROM IT THERE IT WILL PURSUE CLOSELY BEHIND YOU EGYPT AND THERE YOU WILL DIE 16then the sword you fear will overtake you there and the famine you dread will follow on your heels into Egypt, and you will die there.
17AND THEY MAY BE ALL THE PEOPLE WHO THEY HAVE SET <OBJ.> FACES THEIR TO GO EGYPT TO SOJOURN THERE THEY WILL DIE BY THE SWORD BY <THE> FAMINE AND BY <THE> PESTILENCE AND NOT HE WILL BELONG TO <THE> THEM A SURVIVOR AND AN ESCAPEE FROM BEFORE THE CALAMITY WHICH I [WILL] BRING ON THEM 17So all who resolve to go to Egypt to reside there will die by sword and famine and plague. Not one of them will survive or escape the disaster I will bring upon them.’
18FOR THUS HE SAYS YAHWEH OF HOSTS [THE] GOD OF ISRAEL JUST AS IT WAS POURED OUT ANGER MY AND RAGE MY ON [THE] INHABITANTS OF JERUSALEM SO IT WILL POUR OUT RAGE MY ON YOU WHEN GO YOU EGYPT AND YOU WILL BECOME <INTO> AN CURSE AND <INTO> A HORROR AND <INTO> A CURSE AND <INTO> A REPROACH AND NOT YOU WILL SEE AGAIN <OBJ.> THE PLACE <THE> THIS 18For this is what the LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says: ‘Just as My anger and wrath were poured out on the residents of Jerusalem, so will My wrath be poured out on you if you go to Egypt. You will become an object of cursing and horror, of vilification and disgrace, and you will never see this place again
19HE HAS SPOKEN YAHWEH TO YOU O REMNANT OF JUDAH MAY NOT YOU GO EGYPT ASSUREDLY <KNOW> YOU WILL KNOW THAT I HAVE WARNED <IN> <THE> YOU THIS DAY 19The LORD has told you, O remnant of Judah, ‘Do not go to Egypt.’ Know for sure that I have warned you today!
20FOR YOU CAUSED TO ERR <IN> SELVES YOUR FOR YOU YOU SENT <OBJ.> ME TO YAHWEH GOD YOUR <TO> SAYING PRAY FOR US TO YAHWEH GOD OUR AND ACCORDING TO ALL THAT HE WILL SAY YAHWEH GOD OUR SO TELL TO <THE> US AND WE WILL DO [IT] 20For you have deceived yourselves by sending me to the LORD your God, saying, ‘Pray to the LORD our God on our behalf, and as for all that the LORD our God says, tell it to us and we will do it.’
21AND I HAVE TOLD TO <THE> YOU THIS DAY AND NOT YOU HAVE LISTENED TO [THE] VOICE OF YAHWEH GOD YOUR AND TO ALL THAT HE SENT ME TO YOU 21For I have told you today, but you have not obeyed the voice of the LORD your God in all He has sent me to tell you.
22AND THEREFORE ASSUREDLY <KNOW> YOU WILL KNOW THAT BY THE SWORD BY <THE> FAMINE AND BY <THE> PESTILENCE YOU WILL DIE IN THE PLACE WHERE YOU DESIRE TO GO TO SOJOURN THERE 22Now therefore, know for sure that by sword and famine and plague you will die in the place where you desire to go to reside.”
