13AND THEY SAT WITH HIM TO THE GROUND SEVEN DAYS AND SEVEN NIGHTS AND NOT [ANYONE WAS] SPEAKING TO HIM A WORD FOR THEY SAW THAT IT WAS GREAT THE PAIN EXCEEDINGLY 13Then they sat on the ground with him for seven days and seven nights, but no one spoke a word to him because they saw how intense his suffering was.
1AFTER THUS HE OPENED JOB <OBJ.> MOUTH HIS AND HE CURSED <OBJ.> DAY HIS Job Laments His Birth 1After this, Job opened his mouth and cursed the day of his birth.
3LET IT PERISH [THE] DAY [WHICH] I WAS BORN ON IT AND THE NIGHT [WHICH] IT SAID HE HAS BEEN CONCEIVED A MAN 3“May the day of my birth perish, and the night it was said, ‘A boy is conceived.’
4THE DAY <THE> THAT LET IT BE DARKNESS MAY NOT HE CARE FOR IT GOD <FROM> ABOVE AND MAY NOT IT SHINE FORTH ON IT DAYLIGHT 4If only that day had turned to darkness! May God above disregard it; may no light shine upon it.
5LET THEM RECLAIM IT DARKNESS AND DEEP DARKNESS LET IT SETTLE DOWN OVER IT CLOUD LET THEM TERRIFY IT [THE] DARKNESS<ES> OF DAY 5May darkness and gloom reclaim it, and a cloud settle over it; may the blackness of the day overwhelm it.
6THE NIGHT <THE> THAT LET IT TAKE IT DARKNESS MAY NOT IT REJOICE AMONG [THE] DAYS OF [THE] YEAR IN [THE] NUMBER OF [THE] MONTHS MAY NOT IT COME 6If only darkness had taken that night away! May it not appear among the days of the year; may it never be entered in any of the months.
7THERE! THE NIGHT <THE> THAT LET IT BE BARREN MAY NOT IT COME A CRY OF JOY IN IT 7Behold, may that night be barren; may no joyful voice come into it.
8LET THEM CURSE IT CURSERS OF A DAY THE [ONES] READY TO ROUSE LEVIATHAN 8May it be cursed by those who curse the day*NoteCloseOr curse the sea — those prepared to rouse Leviathan.
9LET THEM GROW DARK [THE] STARS OF TWILIGHT ITS LET IT WAIT FOR LIGHT AND NOT AND MAY NOT IT LOOK ON [THE] EYELIDS OF DAWN 9May its morning stars grow dark; may it wait in vain for daylight; may it not see the breaking of dawn.
10FOR NOT IT SHUT [THE] DOORS OF WOMB MY AND IT HID TROUBLE FROM EYES MY 10For that night did not shut the doors of the womb to hide the sorrow from my eyes.
11<TO> WHY? NOT FROM [THE] WOMB DID I DIE FROM [THE] BELLY I CAME FORTH AND I MAY EXPIRE? 11Why did I not perish at birth; why did I not die as I came from the womb?
12WHY? DID THEY RECEIVE ME KNEES AND WHY? BREASTS THAT I WILL SUCKLE 12Why were there knees to receive me, and breasts that I should be nursed?
13FOR NOW I LAY DOWN AND I MAY BE AT PEACE I SLEPT THEN IT IS AT REST TO ME 13For now I would be lying down in peace; I would be asleep and at rest
14WITH KINGS AND COUNSELORS OF [THE] EARTH THE [ONES WHO] REBUILT RUINS FOR THEMSELVES 14with kings and counselors of the earth, who built for themselves cities now in ruins,
15OR WITH PRINCES [WHOM] GOLD [BELONGED] TO THEM THOSE [WHO] FILLED HOUSES THEIR SILVER 15or with princes who had gold, who filled their houses with silver.
16OR LIKE A MISCARRIAGE HIDDEN NOT WAS I? LIKE CHILDREN [WHO] NOT THEY HAVE SEEN LIGHT 16Or why was I not hidden like a stillborn child, like an infant who never sees daylight?
17THERE WICKED [PEOPLE] THEY CEASE TURMOIL AND THERE THEY REST WEARY [ONES] OF STRENGTH 17There the wicked cease from raging, and there the weary find rest.
18TOGETHER PRISONERS THEY ARE AT EASE NOT THEY HEAR [THE] VOICE OF A TASKMASTER 18The captives enjoy their ease; they do not hear the voice of the oppressor.
19SMALL AND GREAT [IS] THERE HE AND A SLAVE [IS] FREE FROM MASTER<S> HIS 19Both small and great are there, and the slave is freed from his master.
20<TO> WHY? DOES SOMEONE GIVE TO A SUFFERER LIGHT AND LIFE TO [PEOPLE] BITTER OF SOUL 20Why is light given to the miserable, and life to the bitter of soul,
21THOSE [WHO] LONG FOR <THE> DEATH AND THERE NOT [IS] IT AND THEY DUG FOR IT MORE THAN HIDDEN TREASURES 21who long for death that does not come, and search for it like hidden treasure,
22THE JOYFUL [PEOPLE] TO REJOICING THEY EXULT IF THEY FIND [THE] GRAVE 22who rejoice and greatly exult when they reach the grave?
23TO A MAN WHOM WAY HIS IT IS HIDDEN AND HE HAS MADE INACCESSIBLE GOD BEHIND HIM 23Why is life given to a man whose way is hidden, whom God has hedged in?
24IF <TO> BEFORE FOOD MY GROANING MY IT COMES AND THEY POURED FORTH LIKE <THE> WATER CRIES OF DISTRESS MY 24I sigh when food is put before me, and my groans pour out like water.
25FOR A FEAR I FEARED AND IT CAME TO ME AND [THAT] WHICH I DREADED IT CAME TO ME 25For the thing I feared has overtaken me, and what I dreaded has befallen me.
26NOT I AM AT EASE AND NOT I AM AT PEACE AND NOT I AM AT REST AND IT HAS COME TURMOIL 26I am not at ease or quiet; I have no rest, for trouble has come.”
