40IN PLACE OF WHEAT LET IT COME FORTH THORN[S] AND IN PLACE OF BARLEY FOUL WEED[S] THEY ARE FINISHED [THE] WORDS OF JOB 40then let briers grow instead of wheat and stinkweed instead of barley.” Thus conclude the words of Job.
1AND THEY CEASED [THE] THREE THE MEN <THE> THESE FROM ANSWERING <OBJ.> JOB FOR HE [WAS] RIGHTEOUS IN OWN EYES HIS Elihu Rebukes Job’s Friends 1So these three men stopped answering Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes.
2AND IT BURNED [THE] ANGER OF ELIHU [THE] SON OF BARAKEL THE BUZITE FROM [THE] CLAN OF RAM ON JOB IT BURNED ANGER HIS BECAUSE JUSTIFIED HE SELF HIS MORE THAN GOD 2This kindled the anger of Elihu son of Barachel the Buzite, of the family of Ram. He burned with anger against Job for justifying himself rather than God,
3AND ON [THE] THREE COMPANIONS HIS IT BURNED ANGER HIS ON THAT NOT THEY HAD FOUND AN ANSWER AND THEY HAD CONDEMNED AS GUILTY <OBJ.> JOB 3and he burned with anger against Job’s three friends because they had failed to refute Job, and yet had condemned him.
4AND ELIHU HE HAD WAITED <OBJ.> JOB IN WORDS FOR [WERE] OLD THEY MORE THAN HIM TO DAYS 4Now Elihu had waited to speak to Job because the others were older than he.
5AND HE SAW ELIHU THAT THERE NOT [WAS] AN ANSWER IN [THE] MOUTH OF [THE] THREE THE MEN AND IT BURNED ANGER HIS 5But when he saw that the three men had no further reply, his anger was kindled.
6AND HE ANSWERED ELIHU [THE] SON OF BARAKEL THE BUZITE AND HE SAID [AM] YOUNG I TO DAYS AND YOU [ARE] AGED THERE- -FORE I WAS ANXIOUS AND I WAS AFRAID FROM TELLING KNOWLEDGE MY <OBJ.> YOU 6So Elihu son of Barachel the Buzite declared: “I am young in years, while you are old; that is why I was timid and afraid to tell you what I know.
7I SAID DAYS LET THEM SPEAK AND ABUNDANCE OF YEARS LET THEM MAKE KNOWN WISDOM 7I thought that age should speak, and many years should teach wisdom.
8NEVERTHELESS [IS THE] SPIRIT IT IN A PERSON AND [THE] BREATH OF [THE] ALMIGHTY [WHICH] IT GIVES UNDERSTANDING THEM 8But there is a spirit*NoteCloseOr the Spirit; similarly in verse 18 in a man, the breath of the Almighty, that gives him understanding.
9NOT MANY [PEOPLE] THEY ARE WISE AND OLD [PEOPLE] THEY UNDERSTAND JUSTICE 9It is not only the old*NoteCloseOr many or great who are wise, or the elderly who understand justice.
10<TO> THEREFORE I SAY LISTEN! TO ME I WILL TELL KNOWLEDGE MY ALSO I 10Therefore I say, ‘Listen to me; I too will declare what I know.’
11HERE! I WAITED FOR WORDS YOUR I GAVE EAR TO UNDERSTANDING<S> YOUR UNTIL YOU SEARCHED FOR! WORDS 11Indeed, I waited while you spoke; I listened to your reasoning; as you searched for words,
12AND TO YOU I SHOWED MYSELF ATTENTIVE AND THERE! THERE NOT <TO> JOB [WAS ONE WHO] REBUKED [WAS ONE WHO] ANSWERED WORDS HIS ANY OF YOU 12I paid you full attention. But no one proved Job wrong; not one of you rebutted his arguments.
13LEST YOU SHOULD SAY WE HAVE FOUND WISDOM GOD LET HIM DRIVE ABOUT HIM NOT A HUMAN 13So do not claim, ‘We have found wisdom; let God, not man, refute him.’
14AND NOT HE HAS ARRANGED AGAINST ME WORDS AND WITH WORDS YOUR NOT I WILL RESPOND TO HIM 14But Job has not directed his words against me, and I will not answer him with your arguments.
15THEY ARE DISMAYED NOT THEY HAVE ANSWERED AGAIN THEY HAVE MOVED AWAY FROM <THE> THEM WORDS 15Job’s friends are dismayed, with no more to say; words have escaped them.
16AND WILL I WAIT? THAT NOT THEY SPEAK THAT THEY HAVE STOOD NOT THEY HAVE ANSWERED AGAIN 16Must I wait, now that they are silent, now that they stand and no longer reply?
17I WILL ANSWER ALSO I PART MY I WILL TELL KNOWLEDGE MY ALSO I 17I too will answer; yes, I will declare what I know.
18FOR I AM FULL WORDS IT HAS CONSTRAINED ME [THE] SPIRIT OF BELLY MY 18For I am full of words, and my spirit within me compels me.
19HERE! BELLY MY [IS] LIKE WINE [WHICH] NOT IT IS OPENED LIKE WINESKINS NEW IT WILL BE SPLIT OPEN 19Behold, my belly is like unvented wine; it is about to burst like a new wineskin.
20LET ME SPEAK AND IT MAY BE RELIEVED TO ME LET ME OPEN LIPS MY SO I MAY ANSWER 20I must speak and find relief I must open my lips and respond.
21MAY NOT PLEASE I LIFT UP [THE] FACE OF ANYONE AND TO ANYONE NOT I WILL USE FLATTERY 21I will be partial to no one, nor will I flatter any man.
22FOR NOT I KNOW I WILL USE FLATTERY LIKE A LITTLE HE WILL CARRY AWAY ME [THE ONE WHO] MADE ME 22For I do not know how to flatter, or my Maker would remove me in an instant. [’’]
