4WHERE? WERE YOU WHEN FOUNDED I [THE] EARTH TELL IF YOU KNOW UNDERSTANDING 4Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth? Tell Me, if you have understanding.
5WHO? DID HE APPOINT MEASUREMENTS ITS FOR YOU KNOW OR WHO? DID HE STRETCH OUT ON IT A MEASURING-LINE 5Who fixed its measurements? Surely you know! Or who stretched a measuring line across it?
6ON WHAT? BASES ITS WERE THEY SUNK OR WHO? DID HE LAY [THE] STONE OF CORNER ITS 6On what were its foundations set, or who laid its cornerstone,*NoteCloseOr who set its core in place
7WHEN SANG TOGETHER [THE] STARS OF MORNING AND THEY SHOUTED ALL [THE] SONS OF GOD 7while the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy?
8AND HE SHUT OFF WITH DOORS [THE] SEA WHEN BURST FORTH IT FROM [THE] WOMB IT CAME FORTH 8Who enclosed the sea behind doors when it burst forth from the womb,
9WHEN MADE I CLOUD[S] CLOTHING ITS AND THICK DARKNESS SWADDLING-BAND ITS 9when I made the clouds its garment and thick darkness its blanket,
10AND I BROKE ON IT BOUNDARY MY AND I SET IN PLACE A BAR AND DOORS 10when I fixed its boundaries and set in place its bars and doors,
11AND I SAID TO HERE YOU WILL COME AND NOT YOU WILL ADD AND HERE SOMEONE WILL FIX IN [THE] PRIDE OF WAVES YOUR 11and I declared: ‘You may come this far, but no farther; here your proud waves must stop’?
12¿ FROM DAYS YOUR HAVE YOU COMMANDED MORNING YOU CAUSED TO KNOW THE DAWN PLACE ITS 12In your days, have you commanded the morning or assigned the dawn its place,
13TO TAKE HOLD ON [THE] CORNERS OF THE EARTH SO THEY MAY BE SHAKEN WICKED [PEOPLE] FROM IT 13that it might spread to the ends of the earth and shake the wicked out of it?
14IT IS CHANGED LIKE [THE] CLAY OF A SEAL SO THEY MAY STAND FORTH LIKE CLOTHING 14The earth takes shape like clay under a seal; its hills stand out like the folds of a garment.
15SO IT MAY BE WITHHELD FROM WICKED [PEOPLE] LIGHT THEIR AND AN ARM UPLIFTED IT IS BROKEN 15Light is withheld from the wicked, and their upraised arm is broken.
16¿ HAVE YOU GONE TO [THE] SPRINGS OF [THE] SEA AND IN [THE] DEPTH OF [THE] DEEP HAVE YOU WALKED ABOUT? 16Have you journeyed to the vents of the sea or walked in the trenches of the deep?
17¿ HAVE THEY BEEN REVEALED TO YOU [THE] GATES OF DEATH AND [THE] GATES OF DEEP DARKNESS HAVE YOU SEEN? 17Have the gates of death been revealed to you? Have you seen the gates of the shadow of death?
18HAVE YOU SHOWN YOURSELF ATTENTIVE? TO [THE] BROAD SPACES OF [THE] EARTH TELL IF YOU KNOW ALL OF IT 18Have you surveyed the extent of the earth? Tell Me, if you know all this.
19WHERE? THIS [IS] THE WAY [WHERE] IT DWELLS LIGHT AND DARKNESS WHERE? THIS [IS] PLACE ITS 19Where is the way to the home of light? Do you know where darkness resides,
20THAT YOU WILL TAKE IT TO TERRITORY ITS AND THAT YOU WILL DISCERN [THE] PATHS OF HOUSE ITS 20so you can lead it back to its border? Do you know the paths to its home?
21YOU KNOW FOR THEN YOU WERE BORN AND [THE] NUMBER OF DAYS YOUR [IS] MANY 21Surely you know, for you were already born! And the number of your days is great!
22¿ HAVE YOU GONE INTO [THE] STOREHOUSES OF SNOW AND [THE] STOREHOUSES OF HAIL HAVE YOU SEEN? 22Have you entered the storehouses of snow or observed the storehouses of hail,
23WHICH I HAVE KEPT BACK FOR [THE] TIME OF DISTRESS FOR [THE] DAY OF BATTLE AND WARFARE 23which I hold in reserve for times of trouble, for the day of war and battle?
24WHERE? THIS [IS] THE WAY [WHERE] IT IS DIVIDED LIGHT [WHERE] IT SCATTERS [THE] EAST WIND OVER [THE] EARTH 24In which direction is the lightning dispersed, or the east wind scattered over the earth?
25WHO? DOES HE DIVIDE FOR THE FLOOD A CHANNEL AND A PATH FOR [THE] STORM OF THUNDER CLAPS 25Who cuts a channel for the flood or clears a path for the thunderbolt,
26TO SEND RAIN ON A LAND NOT ANYONE A WILDERNESS [WHICH] NOT ANYONE [IS] IN IT 26to bring rain on a barren land, on a desert where no man lives
27TO SATISFY DEVASTATION AND DESOLATION AND TO CAUSE TO SPROUT A GOING FORTH OF VEGETATION 27to satisfy the parched wasteland and make it sprout with tender grass?
28¿ [IS] THERE FOR THE RAIN A FATHER OR WHO? DOES HE FATHER [THE] DROPS OF DEW 28Does the rain have a father? Who has begotten the drops of dew?
29FROM [THE] WOMB OF WHOM? DOES IT COME FORTH THE ICE AND [THE] FROST OF HEAVEN WHO? DOES HE GIVE BIRTH TO IT 29From whose womb does the ice emerge? Who gives birth to the frost from heaven,
30LIKE <THE> STONE WATERS THEY BECOME HARD AND [THE] SURFACE OF [THE] DEEP THEY FREEZE 30when the waters become hard as stone and the surface of the deep is frozen?
31¿ WILL YOU BIND ON [THE] BONDS OF PLEIADES OR? [THE] CHAINS OF ORION WILL YOU LOOSEN 31Can you bind the chains of the Pleiades or loosen the belt of Orion?
32¿ WILL YOU LEAD OUT [THE] CONSTELLATIONS AT APPROPRIATE TIME ITS AND [THE] BEAR WITH YOUNG ONES ITS WILL YOU GUIDE? THEM 32Can you bring forth the constellations in their seasons*NoteCloseOr bring forth Mazzaroth in its season or lead out the Bear*NoteCloseOr Leo or Arcturus and her cubs?
33¿ DO YOU KNOW [THE] STATUTES OF [THE] HEAVENS OR? DO YOU APPOINT RULE ITS OVER THE EARTH 33Do you know the laws of the heavens? Can you set their dominion over the earth?
34¿ WILL YOU LIFT UP TO THE CLOUD[S] VOICE YOUR AND AN ABUNDANCE OF WATER WILL YOU COVER? YOURSELF 34Can you command the clouds so that a flood of water covers you?
35¿ WILL YOU SEND FORTH LIGHTNING<S> SO THEY MAY GO AND THEY MAY SAY TO YOU HERE [ARE] WE 35Can you send the lightning bolts on their way? Do they report to you, ‘Here we are’?
36WHO? HAS HE PUT IN THE INNER PARTS WISDOM OR WHO? HAS HE GIVEN TO THE HEART UNDERSTANDING 36Who has put wisdom in the heart*NoteCloseOr Who has given the ibis wisdom, that is, wisdom about the flooding of the Nile or given understanding to the mind?
37WHO? WILL HE COUNT [THE] CLOUDS BY WISDOM AND [THE] WATERSKINS OF HEAVEN WHO? WILL HE MAKE TO LIE DOWN 37Who has the wisdom to count the clouds? Or who can tilt the water jars of the heavens
38WHEN FLOWS [THE] DUST INTO <THE> LUMP AND [THE] CLODS THEY ARE JOINED TOGETHER 38when the dust hardens into a mass and the clods of earth stick together?
39¿ WILL YOU HUNT FOR A LION PREY AND [THE] LIFE OF YOUNG LIONS WILL YOU FILL? 39Can you hunt the prey for a lioness or satisfy the hunger of young lions
40IF THEY WILL CROUCH IN <THE> DENS THEY WILL REMAIN IN <THE> THICKET FOR LYING-IN-WAIT 40when they crouch in their dens and lie in wait in the thicket?
41WHO? DOES HE PREPARE FOR THE RAVEN FOOD-SUPPLY ITS IF YOUNG ONES ITS TO GOD THEY WILL CRY FOR HELP THEY WILL WANDER ABOUT FOR NOT FOOD 41Who provides food for the raven when its young cry out to God as they wander about for lack of food? [’’]
