41SAID TO THEM <THE> JESUS; IF BLIND YOU WERE, NOT THEN WOULD YOU HAVE SIN. SINCE HOWEVER YOU SAY THAT WE SEE, THE THEREFORE SIN OF YOU REMAINS. 41“If you were blind, ” Jesus replied “you would not be guilty of sin. But since you claim you can see, your guilt remains. ”
1AMEN AMEN I SAY TO YOU; THE [ONE] NOT ENTERING IN THROUGH THE DOOR TO THE FOLD OF THE SHEEP BUT CLIMBING UP ANOTHER WAY, HE A THIEF IS AND A ROBBER; Jesus the Good Shepherd (Psalm 23:1–6; Ezekiel 34:11–24) 1“Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever does not enter the sheepfold by the gate, but climbs in some other way, is a thief and a robber.
2THE [ONE] HOWEVER ENTERING IN THROUGH THE DOOR SHEPHERD IS OF THE SHEEP. 2But the one who enters by the gate is the shepherd of the sheep.
3TO HIM THE DOORKEEPER OPENS, AND THE SHEEP TO THE VOICE OF HIM LISTEN, AND <THE> [HIS] OWN SHEEP HE SHOUTS TO BY NAME AND LEADS OUT THEM. 3The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen for his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.
4AND WHEN <THE> [HIS] OWN ALL HE MAY BRING OUT, BEFORE THEM HE GOES, AND THE SHEEP AFTER HIM FOLLOW, BECAUSE THEY KNOW THE VOICE OF HIM. 4When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice.
5AFTER A STRANGER HOWEVER CERTAINLY NOT THEY WILL FOLLOW BUT WILL FLEE FROM HIM, BECAUSE NOT THEY KNOW <THE> OF STRANGERS THE VOICE. 5But they will never follow a stranger; in fact, they will flee from him because they do not recognize his voice. ”
6THIS <THE> ALLEGORY SPOKE TO THEM <THE> JESUS; THEY HOWEVER NOT KNEW WHAT IT WAS THAT HE WAS SAYING TO THEM. 6Jesus spoke to them using this illustration, but they did not understand what He was telling them.
7SAID THEREFORE AGAIN TO THEM <THE> JESUS; AMEN AMEN I SAY TO YOU THAT I MYSELF AM THE DOOR OF THE SHEEP. 7So He said to them again, “Truly, truly, I tell you, I am the gate for the sheep.
8ALL AS MANY AS CAME BEFORE ME THIEVES ARE AND ROBBERS; BUT NOT DID LISTEN TO THEM THE SHEEP. 8All who came before Me*NoteCloseBYZ All who came were thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them.
9I MYSELF AM THE DOOR; THROUGH ME IF ANYONE SHALL ENTER IN, HE WILL BE SAVED AND HE WILL GO IN AND WILL GO OUT AND PASTURE WILL FIND. 9I am the gate. If anyone enters through Me, he will be saved. He will come in and go out and find pasture.
10THE THIEF NOT COMES ONLY EXCEPT THAT HE SHALL STEAL AND SHALL KILL AND SHALL DESTROY; I MYSELF CAME THAT LIFE THEY MAY HAVE AND EXCESSIVE MAY HAVE. 10The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I have come that they may have life, and have it in all its fullness.
11I MYSELF AM THE SHEPHERD <THE> GOOD; THE SHEPHERD <THE> GOOD THE LIFE OF HIM LAYS DOWN FOR THE SHEEP. 11I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep.
12THE HIRED SERVANT NOW HOWEVER NOT BEING [THE] SHEPHERD, WHOSE NOT ARE THE SHEEP [HIS] OWN, HE SEES THE WOLF COMING AND HE LEAVES THE SHEEP AND FLEES — AND THE WOLF SNATCHES THEM AND SCATTERS —. <THE> SHEEP 12The hired hand is not the shepherd, and the sheep are not his own. When he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf pounces on them and scatters the flock.
13THIS NOW HIRED SERVANT FLEES BECAUSE A HIRED SERVANT HE IS AND NOT HE IS HIMSELF CONCERNED TO HIM ABOUT THE SHEEP. 13The man runs away because he is a hired servant and is unconcerned for the sheep.
14I MYSELF AM THE SHEPHERD <THE> GOOD AND I KNOW <THE> MY OWN, AND THEY KNOW ME THOSE MINE, 14I am the good shepherd. I know My sheep and My sheep know Me,
15EVEN AS KNOWS ME THE FATHER I MYSELF ALSO KNOW THE FATHER, AND THE LIFE OF MINE I LAY DOWN FOR THE SHEEP. 15just as the Father knows Me and I know the Father. And I lay down My life for the sheep.
16AND OTHER SHEEP I HAVE, WHICH NOT ARE OF <THE> FOLD THIS, THOSE ALSO IT BEHOOVES ME TO BRING, AND TO THE VOICE OF MINE THEY WILL LISTEN, AND THEY WILL BECOME ONE FLOCK, WITH ONE SHEPHERD. 16I have other sheep that are not of this fold. I must bring them in as well, and they will listen to My voice. Then there will be one flock and one shepherd.
17BECAUSE OF THIS ME THE FATHER LOVES BECAUSE I MYSELF LAY DOWN THE LIFE OF MINE, THAT AGAIN I MAY TAKE IT. 17The reason the Father loves Me is that I lay down My life in order to take it up again.
18NO [ONE] TAKES AWAY IT FROM ME, BUT I MYSELF LAY DOWN IT OF MYSELF. AUTHORITY I HAVE TO LAY DOWN IT AND AUTHORITY I HAVE AGAIN TO TAKE IT; THIS <THE> COMMANDMENT I RECEIVED FROM THE FATHER OF MINE. 18No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of My own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This charge I have received from My Father. ”
19DIVISION THEREFORE AGAIN THERE WAS AMONG THE JEWS ON ACCOUNT OF <THE> WORDS THESE. 19Again there was division among the Jews because of Jesus’ message.
20WERE SAYING NOW MANY OF THEM; A DEMON HE HAS AND IS INSANE; WHY TO HIM DO YOU LISTEN? 20Many of them said, “He is demon-possessed and insane. Why would you listen to Him? ”
21OTHERS NOW WERE SAYING; THESE <THE> DECLARATIONS NOT ARE [THOSE] OF ONE DEMONISED; SURELY NOT A DEMON IS ABLE OF [THE] BLIND [THEIR] EYES TO OPEN? 21But others replied, “These are not the words of a man possessed by a demon. Can a demon open the eyes of the blind? ”
22TOOK PLACE AT THE TIME THE FEAST OF DEDICATION AT <THE> JERUSALEM; AND WINTER IT WAS, Jesus at the Feast of Dedication 22At that time the Feast of Dedication*NoteCloseThat is, Hanukkah, the historic celebration of the Maccabean Revolt and rededication of the temple took place in Jerusalem. It was winter,
23AND WAS WALKING <THE> JESUS IN THE TEMPLE IN THE PORCH <THE> OF SOLOMON. 23and Jesus was walking in the temple courts*NoteCloseLiterally the temple in Solomon’s Colonnade.
24ENCIRCLED THEREFORE HIM THE JEWS AND THEY WERE SAYING TO HIM; UNTIL WHEN THE SOUL OF US HOLD YOU IN SUSPENSE? IF YOU YOURSELF ARE THE CHRIST, DO TELL US PLAINLY. 24So the Jews gathered around Him and demanded “How long will You keep us in suspense? If You are the Christ, tell us plainly. ”
25ANSWERED THEM <THE> JESUS; I TOLD YOU, AND NOT YOU BELIEVE. THE WORKS THAT I MYSELF DO IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER OF MINE, THESE BEAR WITNESS CONCERNING ME; 25“I already told you, ” Jesus replied “but you did not believe. The works I do in My Father’s name testify on My behalf.
26BUT YOU YOURSELVES NOT BELIEVE, BECAUSE NOT YOU ARE FROM AMONG THE SHEEP <THE> OF MINE EVEN AS I SAID TO YOU. 26But because you are not My sheep, you refuse to believe.
27THE SHEEP <THE> OF MINE TO THE VOICE OF MINE THEY LISTEN AND I MYSELF KNOW THEM, AND THEY FOLLOW ME, 27My sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow Me.
28AND I MYSELF GIVE TO THEM LIFE ETERNAL, AND CERTAINLY NOT SHALL THEY PERISH TO THE AGE, AND NEVER WILL SEIZE ANYONE THEM OUT OF THE HAND OF ME. 28I give them eternal life, and they will never perish No one can snatch them out of My hand.
29THE FATHER OF MINE WHICH HAS GIVEN [THEM] TO ME [THAN] ALL GREATER IS, AND NO [ONE] IS ABLE TO SEIZE [THEM] OUT OF THE HAND THE FATHER OF MINE. 29My Father who has given them to Me is greater than all. No one can snatch them out of My Father’s hand.
31TOOK UP THEREFORE AGAIN STONES THE JEWS, THAT THEY MAY STONE HIM. 31At this, the Jews again picked up stones to stone Him.
32ANSWERED THEM <THE> JESUS; MANY WORKS GOOD I HAVE SHOWN YOU FROM THE FATHER OF MINE; BECAUSE OF WHICH OF THESE WORK ME MYSELF DO YOU STONE 32But Jesus responded “I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these do you stone Me? ”
33ANSWERED TO HIM THE JEWS SAYING: FOR A GOOD WORK NOT WE DO STONE YOU BUT FOR BLASPHEMY, AND BECAUSE YOU YOURSELF A MAN BEING MAKE YOURSELF GOD. 33We are not stoning You for any good work, ” said the Jews “but for blasphemy, because You, who are a man, make Yourself out to be God. ”
34ANSWERED TO THEM <THE> JESUS; SURELY IT IS WRITTEN IN THE LAW OF YOU THAT I MYSELF SAID: GODS YOU ARE’? 34Jesus replied “Is it not written in your Law: ‘I have said you are gods’*NoteClosePsalm 82:6?
35IF THEM HE CALLED GODS TO WHOM THE WORD <THE> OF GOD CAME, AND NOT IS ABLE TO BE BROKEN THE SCRIPTURE, 35If he called them gods to whom the word of God came— and the Scripture cannot be broken—
36[OF HIM] WHOM THE FATHER SANCTIFIED AND HE SENT INTO THE WORLD, YOU YOURSELVES DO SAY THAT YOU BLASPHEME, BECAUSE I SAID; SON <THE> OF GOD I AM’? 36then what about the One whom the Father sanctified and sent into the world? How then can you accuse Me of blasphemy for stating that I am the Son of God?
37IF NOT I DO THE WORKS OF THE FATHER OF MINE, [THEN] NOT DO BELIEVE ME; 37If I am not doing the works of My Father, then do not believe Me.
38IF HOWEVER I DO, EVEN IF ME MYSELF NOT YOU SHALL BELIEVE, IN THE WORKS DO BELIEVE SO THAT YOU MAY KNOW AND MAY UNDERSTAND THAT IN ME MYSELF [IS] THE FATHER AND I MYSELF IN THE FATHER. 38But if I am doing them, even though you do not believe Me, believe the works themselves, so that you may know and understand that the Father is in Me, and I am in the Father. ”
39THEY WERE SEEKING THEREFORE HIM AGAIN TO SEIZE; BUT HE WENT FORTH OUT OF THE HAND OF THEM 39At this, they tried again to seize Him, but He escaped their grasp.
40AND HE DEPARTED AGAIN BEYOND THE JORDAN TO THE PLACE WHERE WAS JOHN <THE> AT FIRST BAPTIZING, AND HE STAYED THERE. John’s Testimony Confirmed 40Then Jesus went back across the Jordan to the place where John had first been baptizing, and He stayed there.
41AND MANY CAME TO HIM AND WERE SAYING THAT JOHN INDEED SIGN DID NO[THING], EVERYTHING HOWEVER AS MUCH AS SAID JOHN ABOUT THIS [MAN] TRUE WAS. 41Many came to Him and said, “Although John never performed a sign, everything he said about this man was true. ”
