WAS NOW A CERTAIN [MAN] AILING, LAZARUS OF BETHANY OF THE VILLAGE OF MARY AND MARTHA THE SISTER OF HER; The Death of Lazarus 1At this time a man named Lazarus was sick. He lived in Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.
WAS NOW MARY THE [ONE] HAVING ANOINTED THE LORD WITH FRAGRANT OIL AND HAVING WIPED THE FEET OF HIM WITH THE HAIR OF HER, WHOSE <THE> BROTHER LAZARUS WAS SICK. 2Mary, whose brother Lazarus was sick, was to anoint the Lord with perfume and wipe His feet*NoteCloseLiterally was the one having anointed the Lord with fragrant oil and having wiped His feet; see John 12:3. with her hair.)
SENT THEREFORE THE SISTERS TO HIM SAYING; LORD, BEHOLD [HE] WHOM YOU LOVE WAS BEING SICK. 3So the sisters sent word to Jesus, “Lord, the one You love is sick. ”
HAVING HEARD THEN <THE> JESUS SAID; THIS <THE> SICKNESS NOT IS UNTO DEATH BUT FOR THE GLORY <THE> OF GOD THAT MAY BE GLORIFIED THE SON <THE> OF GOD THROUGH IT. 4When Jesus heard this, He said, “This sickness will not end in death. No, it is for the glory of God, so that the Son of God may be glorified through it. ”
WAS LOVING NOW <THE> JESUS <THE> MARTHA AND THE SISTER OF HER AND <THE> LAZARUS. 5Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.
WHEN THEREFORE HE HEARD THAT HE IS SICK, THEN INDEED HE REMAINED IN WHICH HE WAS [THE] PLACE TWO DAYS. 6So on hearing that Lazarus was sick, He stayed where He was for two days,
THEN AFTER THIS HE SAYS TO THE DISCIPLES; LET US GO INTO <THE> JUDEA AGAIN. 7and then He said to the disciples, “Let us go back to Judea. ”
SAY TO HIM THE DISCIPLES; RABBI, JUST NOW WERE SEEKING YOU TO STONE THE JEWS, AND AGAIN YOU ARE GOING THERE? 8“Rabbi, ” they replied “the Jews just tried to stone You, and You are going back there? ”
ANSWERED <THE> JESUS; SURELY TWELVE HOURS ARE THERE IN THE DAY? IF ANYONE SHALL WALK IN THE DAY, NOT HE STUMBLES, BECAUSE THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD THIS HE SEES. 9Jesus answered, “Are there not twelve hours of daylight? If anyone walks in the daytime, he will not stumble, because he sees by the light of this world.
IF HOWEVER ANYONE SHALL WALK IN THE NIGHT, HE STUMBLES, BECAUSE THE LIGHT NOT IS IN HIM. 10But if anyone walks at night, he will stumble, because he has no light. ”
THESE THINGS HE SAID AND AFTER THIS HE SAYS TO THEM; LAZARUS THE FRIEND OF US HAS FALLEN ASLEEP; BUT I GO THAT I MAY AWAKEN HIM. 11After He had said this, He told them, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I am going there to wake him up. ”
SAID THEREFORE THE DISCIPLES TO HIM; LORD, IF HE HAS FALLEN ASLEEP, HE WILL GET WELL. 12His disciples replied, “Lord, if he is sleeping, he will get better. ”
HAD SPOKEN HOWEVER <THE> JESUS OF THE DEATH OF HIM; THEY HOWEVER THOUGHT THAT OF THE REST <THE> OF SLEEP HE SPEAKS. 13They thought that Jesus was talking about actual sleep, but He was speaking about the death of Lazarus.
THEN THEREFORE SAID TO THEM <THE> JESUS PLAINLY; LAZARUS HAS DIED. 14So Jesus told them plainly, “Lazarus is dead,
AND I REJOICE FOR SAKE OF YOU, IN ORDER THAT YOU MAY BELIEVE, THAT NOT I WAS THERE; BUT LET US GO TO HIM. 15and for your sake I am glad I was not there, so that you may believe. But let us go to him. ”
SAID THEREFORE THOMAS WHO IS BEING NAMED DIDYMUS TO THE FELLOW DISCIPLES; LET US GO ALSO US THAT WE MAY DIE WITH HIM. 16Then Thomas called Didymus*NoteCloseDidymus means the twin. said to his fellow disciples, “Let us also go, so that we may die with Him. ”
HAVING COME THEREFORE <THE> JESUS FOUND HIM FOUR ALREADY DAYS HAVING BEEN IN THE TOMB. Jesus Comforts Martha and Mary 17When Jesus arrived, He found that Lazarus had already spent four days in the tomb.
WAS NOW <THE> BETHANY NEAR <THE> JERUSALEM ABOUT AWAY STADIA FIFTEEN. 18Now Bethany was near Jerusalem, a little less than two miles*NoteCloseGreek about fifteen stadia; that is, approximately 1.72 miles or 2.78 kilometers away,
AND MANY NOW OF THE JEWS HAD COME UNTO <THE> CONCERNING MARTHA AND MARY THAT THEY MAY CONSOLE THEM CONCERNING THE BROTHER OF THEM. 19and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them in the loss of their brother.
<THE> THEREFORE MARTHA, WHEN SHE HEARD THAT <THE> JESUS IS COMING, MET WITH HIM; MARY HOWEVER IN THE HOUSE WAS SITTING. 20So when Martha heard that Jesus was coming, she went out to meet Him, but Mary stayed at home.
SAID THEN <THE> MARTHA TO <THE> JESUS; LORD, IF YOU HAD BEEN HERE, NOT THEN WOULD BE DEAD THE BROTHER OF MINE. 21Martha said to Jesus, “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.
NEVERTHELESS EVEN NOW I KNOW THAT AS MUCH AS MAYBE YOU MAY ASK <THE> GOD WILL GIVE YOU <THE> GOD. 22But even now I know that God will give You whatever You ask of Him. ”
SAYS TO HER <THE> JESUS; WILL RISE AGAIN THE BROTHER OF YOU. 23“Your brother will rise again, ” Jesus told her.
SAYS TO HIM <THE> MARTHA; I KNOW THAT HE WILL RISE AGAIN IN THE RESURRECTION IN THE LAST DAY. 24Martha replied, “I know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day. ”
SAID TO HER <THE> JESUS; I MYSELF AM THE RESURRECTION AND THE LIFE; THE [ONE] BELIEVING IN ME MYSELF EVEN IF HE SHALL DIE HE WILL LIVE, 25Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me will live, even though he dies.
AND EVERYONE WHO IS LIVING AND BELIEVING IN ME MYSELF CERTAINLY NOT HE SHALL DIE TO THE AGE. BELIEVE YOU THIS? 26And everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die. Do you believe this? ”
SHE SAYS TO HIM; YES LORD; I MYSELF HAVE BELIEVED THAT YOU YOURSELF ARE THE CHRIST THE SON <THE> OF GOD THE [ONE] INTO THE WORLD COMING. 27“Yes, Lord, ” she answered, “I believe that You are the Christ, the Son of God, who was to come into the world. ”
AND THESE THINGS HAVING SAID SHE WENT AWAY AND SHE CALLED MARY THE SISTER OF HER SECRETLY HAVING SAID; THE TEACHER IS COME AND HE CALLS YOU. 28After Martha had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside to tell her, “The Teacher is here and is asking for you. ”
SHE THEN WHEN SHE HEARD [SHE] ROSE UP QUICKLY AND WAS COMING TO HIM. 29And when Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to Him.
NOT YET NOW HAD COME <THE> JESUS INTO THE VILLAGE, BUT WAS STILL IN THE PLACE WHERE MET WITH HIM <THE> MARTHA. 30Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met Him.
THE THEN JEWS WHO ARE BEING WITH HER IN THE HOUSE AND CONSOLING HER, HAVING SEEN <THE> MARY THAT SOON SHE ROSE UP AND WENT OUT, FOLLOWED AFTER HER, HAVING SUPPOSED THAT SHE IS GOING TO THE TOMB THAT SHE MAY WEEP THERE. 31When the Jews who were in the house consoling Mary saw how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to mourn there.
<THE> THEREFORE MARY WHEN SHE CAME TO WHERE WAS <THE> JESUS, HAVING SEEN HIM SHE FELL OF HIM AT THE FEET SAYING TO HIM; LORD, IF YOU HAD BEEN HERE, NOT THEN WOULD MY HAVE DIED <THE> BROTHER. 32When Mary came to Jesus and saw Him, she fell at His feet and said “Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died. ”
JESUS THEREFORE WHEN HE SAW HER WEEPING AND THE HAVING COME WITH HER JEWS WEEPING, HE WAS DEEPLY MOVED <THE> IN SPIRIT AND TROUBLED HIMSELF 33When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come with her also weeping, He was deeply moved in spirit*NoteCloseOr He was indignant in spirit; similarly in verse 38 and troubled.
AND HE SAID; WHERE HAVE YOU LAID HIM? THEY SAY TO HIM; LORD, DO COME AND DO SEE. 34“Where have you put him? ” He asked. “Come and see, Lord, ” they answered.
WERE SAYING THEREFORE THE JEWS; BEHOLD HOW HE WAS LOVING HIM! 36Then the Jews said, “See how He loved him! ”
SOME HOWEVER OF THEM SAID; SURELY WAS ABLE THIS [MAN] WHO HAVING OPENED THE EYES OF THE BLIND TO HAVE CAUSED THAT ALSO THIS ONE NOT MAY HAVE DIED? 37But some of them asked, “Could not this man who opened the eyes of the blind also have kept Lazarus from dying? ”
JESUS THEREFORE AGAIN BEING DEEPLY MOVED IN HIMSELF HE COMES TO THE TOMB; IT WAS NOW A CAVE, AND A STONE WAS LYING AGAINST IT. Jesus Raises Lazarus (Acts 9:36–43) 38Jesus, once again deeply moved, came to the tomb. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance.
SAYS <THE> JESUS; DO TAKE AWAY THE STONE. SAYS TO HIM THE SISTER OF THE [ONE] HAVING DECEASED MARTHA; LORD, ALREADY HE STINKS; FOUR DAYS FOR IT IS. 39“Take away the stone, ” Jesus said. “Lord, by now he stinks, ” said Martha, the sister of the dead man. It has already been four days. ”
SAYS TO HER <THE> JESUS; SURELY I SAID TO YOU THAT IF YOU SHALL BELIEVE YOU WILL SEE THE GLORY <THE> OF GOD? 40Jesus replied “Did I not tell you that if you believed, you would see the glory of God? ”
THEY TOOK AWAY THEREFORE THE STONE WHERE WAS WHO HAVING DIED LAID. <THE> NOW JESUS LIFTED <THE> [HIS] EYES UPWARDS AND SAID; FATHER, I THANK YOU THAT YOU HAVE HEARD ME. 41So they took away the stone. Then Jesus lifted His eyes upward and said, “Father, I thank You that You have heard Me.
I MYSELF AND KNEW THAT ALWAYS ME YOU HEAR; BUT ON ACCOUNT OF THE CROWD WHICH ALREADY STANDING AROUND I SAID [IT], THAT THEY MAY BELIEVE THAT YOU YOURSELF ME SENT. 42I knew that You always hear Me, but I say this for the benefit of the people standing here, so they may believe that You sent Me. ”
AND THESE THINGS HAVING SAID IN A VOICE LOUD HE CRIED OUT; LAZARUS, COME FORTH. 43After Jesus had said this, He called out in a loud voice, “Lazarus, come out! ”
AND CAME FORTH THE [ONE] HAVING DIED BOUND THE FEET AND THE HANDS WITH LINEN STRIPS, AND THE FACE OF HIM IN A HEADCLOTH HAD BOUND ABOUT. SAYS TO THEM <THE> JESUS: DO UNBIND HIM AND DO ALLOW HIM TO GO. 44The man who had been dead came out with his hands and feet bound in strips of linen, and his face wrapped in a cloth.*NoteCloseGreek soudariō “Unwrap him and let him go, ” Jesus told them.
MANY THEREFORE OF THE JEWS <THE> HAVING COME TO <THE> MARY AND HAVING SEEN WHAT THINGS HE DID <THE> JESUS BELIEVED IN HIM. The Plot to Kill Jesus (Matthew 26:1–5; Mark 14:1–2; Luke 22:1–2) 45Therefore many of the Jews who had come to Mary, and had seen what Jesus did, believed in Him.
SOME HOWEVER OF THEM WENT TO THE PHARISEES AND TOLD TO THEM WHAT DID <THE> JESUS. 46But some of them went to the Pharisees and told them what Jesus had done.
GATHERED THEREFORE THE CHIEF PRIESTS AND THE PHARISEES A COUNCIL AND THEY WERE SAYING; WHAT ARE WE TO DO? FOR THIS <THE> MAN MANY DOES SIGNS! 47Then the chief priests and Pharisees convened the Sanhedrin*NoteCloseOr the Council and said, “What are we to do? This man is performing many signs.
IF WE SHALL LET HIM ALONE HIM LIKE THIS, ALL WILL BELIEVE IN HIM, AND WILL COME THE ROMANS AND WILL TAKE AWAY OF US BOTH THE PLACE AND THE NATION. 48If we let Him go on like this, everyone will believe in Him, and then the Romans will come and take away both our place and our nation. ”
ONE HOWEVER CERTAIN OF THEM CAIAPHAS, HIGH PRIEST BEING ON THE YEAR SAME, SAID TO THEM; YOU YOURSELVES NOT KNOW NO [THING], 49But one of them, named Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, said to them, “You know nothing at all!
NOR CONSIDER YOU THAT IT IS PROFITABLE FOR YOU THAT ONE MAN MAY DIE FOR THE PEOPLE, AND NOT ALL THE NATION MAY PERISH. 50You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish. ”
THIS NOW FROM HIMSELF NOT HE SAID, BUT HIGH PRIEST BEING ON THE YEAR THAT HE PROPHESIED THAT WAS ABOUT <THE> JESUS TO DIE FOR THE NATION, 51Caiaphas did not say this on his own. Instead, as high priest that year, he was prophesying that Jesus would die for the nation,
AND NOT FOR THE NATION ONLY BUT THAT ALSO THE CHILDREN <THE> OF GOD THOSE SCATTERED HE MAY GATHER TOGETHER INTO ONE. 52and not only for the nation, but also for the scattered children of God, to gather them together into one.
FROM THAT [VERY] THEREFORE <THE> DAY THEY PLOTTED THAT THEY MAY KILL HIM. 53So from that day on they plotted to kill Him.
<THE> THEREFORE JESUS NO LONGER PUBLICLY WAS WALKING AMONG THE JEWS, BUT WENT AWAY FROM THERE INTO THE REGION NEAR THE WILDERNESS TO EPHRAIM BEING NAMED A CITY, AND THERE HE STAYED WITH THE DISCIPLES OF HIM. 54As a result, Jesus no longer went about publicly among the Jews, but He withdrew to a town called Ephraim in an area near the wilderness. And He stayed there with the disciples.
WAS NOW NEAR THE PASSOVER OF THE JEWS, AND WENT UP MANY TO JERUSALEM OUT OF THE REGION BEFORE THE PASSOVER SO THAT THEY MAY PURIFY THEMSELVES. 55Now the Jewish Passover was near, and many people went up from the country to Jerusalem to purify themselves before the Passover.
THEY WERE SEEKING THEREFORE <THE> JESUS AND WERE SAYING AMONG ONE ANOTHER IN THE TEMPLE ALREADY STANDING; WHAT DOES IT SEEM TO YOU, THAT CERTAINLY NOT HE MAY COME TO THE FEAST? 56They kept looking for Jesus and asking one another as they stood in the temple courts,*NoteCloseLiterally the temple “What do you think Will He come to the feast at all? ”
HAD GIVEN NOW ALSO THE CHIEF PRIESTS AND THE PHARISEES COMMANDS THAT IF ANYONE SHALL KNOW WHERE HE IS HE SHALL SHOW [IT], SO THAT THEY MAY SEIZE HIM. 57But the chief priests and Pharisees had given orders that anyone who knew where He was must report it, so that they could arrest Him.
