27ALSO YOU YOURSELVES NOW BEAR WITNESS, BECAUSE FROM [THE] BEGINNING WITH ME YOU ARE. 27And you also must testify, because you have been with Me from the beginning. [’’]
1THESE THINGS I HAVE SPOKEN TO YOU THAT NOT YOU MAY FALL AWAY. Persecution Foretold (Acts 23:12–22) 1“I have told you these things so that you will not fall away.
2OUT OF THE SYNAGOGUES THEY WILL PUT YOU; BUT IS COMING AN HOUR THAT EVERYONE WHO HAVING KILLED YOU MAY THINK [IT IS] A SERVICE TO OFFER <THE> TO GOD. 2They will put you out of the synagogues. In fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering a service to God.
3AND THESE THINGS THEY WILL DO TO YOU BECAUSE NOT THEY KNOW THE FATHER NOR ME MYSELF. 3They will do these things because they have not known the Father or Me.
4BUT THESE THINGS I HAVE SAID TO YOU, SO THAT WHEN MAY HAVE COME THE HOUR OF THEM, YOU MAY REMEMBER THOSE [THINGS] THAT I MYSELF SAID TO YOU. THESE THINGS NOW TO YOU FROM [THE] BEGINNING NOT I SAID, BECAUSE WITH YOU I WAS. 4But I have told you these things so that when their hour comes, you will remember that I told you about them. I did not tell you these things from the beginning, because I was with you.
5NOW HOWEVER I GO TO THE [ONE] HAVING SENT ME, AND NONE OF YOU ASKS ME; WHERE ARE YOU GOING? The Promise of the Holy Spirit (John 14:15–26) 5Now, however, I am going to Him who sent Me; yet none of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going? ’
6BUT BECAUSE THESE THINGS I HAVE SAID TO YOU, <THE> SORROW HAS FILLED YOUR <THE> HEART. 6Instead, your hearts are filled with sorrow because I have told you these things.
7BUT I MYSELF THE TRUTH SAY TO YOU; IT IS PROFITABLE FOR YOU THAT I MYSELF MAY GO AWAY; ONLY FOR I MYSELF UNLESS I SHALL GO AWAY, THE HELPER NOT WILL COME TO YOU; IF HOWEVER I SHALL GO, I WILL SEND HIM TO YOU. 7But I tell you the truth, it is for your benefit that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Advocate*NoteCloseOr Comforter or Helper or Counselor; Greek Paraclete will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you.
8AND HAVING COME HE WILL CONVICT THE WORLD CONCERNING SIN AND CONCERNING RIGHTEOUSNESS AND CONCERNING JUDGMENT. 8And when He comes, He will convict the world in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment:
9CONCERNING SIN INDEED, BECAUSE NOT DO THEY BELIEVE IN ME MYSELF; 9in regard to sin because they do not believe in Me;
10CONCERNING RIGHTEOUSNESS HOWEVER, BECAUSE TO THE FATHER OF MINE I GO AWAY, AND NO LONGER YOU BEHOLD ME; 10in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see Me;
11CONCERNING NOW JUDGMENT, BECAUSE THE RULER OF THE WORLD THIS HAS BEEN JUDGED. 11and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world has been condemned.
12YET MANY THINGS I HAVE TO YOU TO SAY BUT NOT YOU ARE ABLE TO BEAR THEM NOW. 12I still have much to tell you, but you cannot yet bear to hear it.
13WHEN HOWEVER MAY COME HE, THE SPIRIT <THE> OF TRUTH, HE WILL GUIDE YOU INTO THE TRUTH ALL. NOT FOR HE WILL SPEAK FROM HIMSELF, BUT AS MUCH AS MAYBE HE WILL HEAR HE WILL SPEAK AND THE [THINGS] COMING HE WILL DECLARE TO YOU. 13However, when the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth. For He will not speak on His own, but He will speak what He hears, and He will declare to you what is to come.
14HE ME MYSELF WILL GLORIFY, FOR FROM THAT WHICH [IS] MINE HE WILL TAKE AND WILL DISCLOSE TO YOU. 14He will glorify Me by taking from what is Mine and disclosing it to you.
15ALL THINGS AS MUCH AS HAS THE FATHER MINE ARE; BECAUSE OF THIS I SAID THAT FROM THAT WHICH [IS] MINE HE RECEIVES AND WILL DISCLOSE TO YOU. 15Everything that belongs to the Father is Mine. That is why I said that the Spirit will take from what is Mine and disclose it to you.
16A LITTLE [WHILE] AND NO LONGER YOU DO BEHOLD ME, AND AGAIN A LITTLE [WHILE] AND YOU WILL BEHOLD ME THAT I MYSELF I AM GOING TO <THE> FATHER. 16In a little while you will see Me no more, and then after a little while you will see Me.*NoteCloseBYZ and TR include because I go away to the Father. ”
17SAID THEREFORE [SOME] OF THE DISCIPLES OF HIM TO ONE ANOTHER; WHAT IS THIS THAT HE SAYS TO US; A LITTLE [WHILE] AND NOT YOU DO BEHOLD ME, AND AGAIN A LITTLE [WHILE] AND YOU WILL BEHOLD ME’? AND BECAUSE I MYSELF I AM GOING TO THE FATHER’? Grief Will Turn to Joy 17Then some of His disciples asked one another, “Why is He telling us, ‘In a little while you will not see Me, and then after a little while you will see Me’ and ‘Because I am going to the Father’? ”
18THEY WERE SAYING THEREFORE; WHAT IS THIS THAT HE SAYS <THE> A LITTLE [WHILE]’? NOT WE DO KNOW WHAT HE IS SAYING. 18They kept asking, “Why is He saying, ‘a little while’? We do not understand what He is saying. ”
19KNEW THEREFORE <THE> JESUS THAT THEY WERE DESIRING HIM TO ASK, AND HE SAID TO THEM; CONCERNING THIS DO YOU INQUIRE AMONG ONE ANOTHER THAT I SAID; A LITTLE [WHILE] AND NOT YOU DO BEHOLD ME, AND AGAIN A LITTLE [WHILE] AND YOU WILL BEHOLD ME’? 19Aware that they wanted to question Him, Jesus said to them, “Are you asking one another why I said, ‘In a little while you will not see Me, and then after a little while you will see Me’?
20AMEN AMEN I SAY TO YOU THAT YOU WILL WEEP AND WILL LAMENT YOU YOURSELVES, <THE> BUT THE WORLD WILL REJOICE; YOU YOURSELVES NOW WILL BE GRIEVED, BUT THE GRIEF OF YOU TO JOY WILL TURN. 20Truly, truly, I tell you, you will weep and wail while the world rejoices. You will grieve, but your grief will turn to joy.
21THE WOMAN WHEN SHE MAY BE GIVING BIRTH PAIN HAS, BECAUSE HAS COME THE HOUR OF HER; WHEN HOWEVER SHE MAY BRING FORTH THE CHILD, NO LONGER SHE REMEMBERS THE TRIBULATION ON ACCOUNT OF THE JOY THAT HAS BEEN BORN A MAN INTO THE WORLD. 21A woman has pain in childbirth because her time has come; but when she brings forth her child, she forgets her anguish because of her joy that a child has been born into the world.
22ALSO YOU YOURSELVES THEREFORE NOW INDEED GRIEF HAVE, AGAIN HOWEVER I WILL SEE YOU AND WILL REJOICE YOUR <THE> HEART, AND THE JOY OF YOU NO [ONE] DO TAKE FROM YOU, 22So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.
23AND IN THAT [VERY] <THE> DAY OF ME MYSELF NOT YOU WILL ASK NO [THING]. AMEN AMEN I SAY TO YOU; THAT MAYBE WHATEVER YOU MAY ASK THE FATHER IN THE NAME OF ME HE WILL GIVE TO YOU. Ask in My Name (Matthew 18:19–20) 23In that day you will no longer ask Me anything. Truly, truly, I tell you, whatever you ask the Father in My name, He will give you.
24UNTIL NOW NOT YOU HAVE ASKED NO [THING] IN THE NAME OF ME; DO ASK AND YOU WILL RECEIVE, THAT THE JOY OF YOU MAY BE FILLED. 24Until now you have not asked for anything in My name. Ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be complete.
25THESE THINGS IN ALLEGORIES I HAVE SPOKEN TO YOU; BUT IS COMING AN HOUR WHEN NO LONGER IN ALLEGORIES I WILL SPEAK TO YOU BUT PLAINLY CONCERNING THE FATHER I WILL ANNOUNCE TO YOU. 25I have spoken these things to you in figures of speech. An hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you this way, but will tell you plainly about the Father.
26IN THAT [VERY] <THE> DAY IN THE NAME OF ME YOU WILL ASK; AND NOT I SAY TO YOU THAT I MYSELF WILL IMPLORE THE FATHER FOR YOU; 26In that day you will ask in My name. I am not saying that I will ask the Father on your behalf.
27HIMSELF FOR THE FATHER LOVES YOU, BECAUSE YOU YOURSELVES ME MYSELF HAVE LOVED AND HAVE BELIEVED THAT I MYSELF FROM <THE> GOD CAME FORTH. 27For the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me and have believed that I came from God.*NoteCloseWH from the Father
28I CAME FORTH FROM WITH THE FATHER AND HAVE COME INTO THE WORLD; AGAIN I LEAVE THE WORLD AND GO TO THE FATHER. 28I came from the Father and entered the world. In turn, I will leave the world and go to the Father. ”
29SAY TO HIM THE DISCIPLES OF HIM; BEHOLD NOW IN OPENNESS YOU SPEAK AND ALLEGORY NO [THING] SPEAK. 29His disciples said, “See, now You are speaking plainly and without figures of speech.
30NOW WE KNOW THAT YOU KNOW ALL THINGS AND NOT NEED HAVE THAT ANYONE YOU MAY ASK. IN THIS WE BELIEVE THAT FROM GOD YOU CAME FORTH. 30Now we understand that You know all things and that You have no need for anyone to question You. Because of this, we believe that You came from God. ”
32BEHOLD IS COMING AN HOUR AND NOW HAS COME WHEN YOU MAY BE SCATTERED EACH TO <THE> [HIS] OWN AND I ALONE YOU MAY LEAVE; YET NOT I AM ALONE, FOR THE FATHER WITH ME IS. 32“Look, an hour is coming and has already come when you will be scattered, each to his own home, and you will leave Me all alone. Yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me.
33THESE THINGS I HAVE SPOKEN TO YOU SO THAT IN ME MYSELF PEACE YOU MAY HAVE. IN THE WORLD TRIBULATION YOU HAVE; BUT TAKE COURAGE! I MYSELF HAVE OVERCOME THE WORLD. 33I have told you these things so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take courage; I have overcome the world! ”
