30ON THE NOW NEXT DAY DESIRING TO KNOW <THE> FOR CERTAIN <THE> WHY HE IS ACCUSED BY THE JEWS, HE UNBOUND HIM FROM THE CHAINS AND COMMANDED TO ASSEMBLE THE CHIEF PRIESTS AND ALL THE COUNCIL OF THEM, AND HAVING BROUGHT DOWN <THE> PAUL HE SET [HIM] AMONG THEM. 30The next day the commander, wanting to learn the real reason Paul was accused by the Jews, released him and ordered the chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin*NoteCloseOr the whole Council to assemble. Then he brought Paul down and had him stand before them.
1HAVING LOOKED INTENTLY THEN <THE> PAUL AT THE COUNCIL HE SAID; MEN BROTHERS, I MYSELF IN ALL CONSCIENCE GOOD HAVE LIVED AS A CITIZEN <THE> TO GOD UNTO THIS <THE> DAY. Paul before the Sanhedrin 1Paul looked directly at the Sanhedrin*NoteCloseOr the Council; also in verses 6, 15, 20, and 28 and said, “Brothers, I have conducted myself before God in all good conscience to this day. ”
2<THE> THEN THE HIGH PRIEST ANANIAS COMMANDED TO THOSE STANDING BY HIM TO STRIKE OF HIM THE MOUTH. 2At this, the high priest Ananias ordered those standing near Paul to strike him on the mouth.
3THEN <THE> PAUL TO HIM SAID; TO STRIKE YOU IS ABOUT <THE> GOD, WALL WHITEWASHED! AND YOU YOURSELF DO YOU SIT JUDGING ME ACCORDING TO THE LAW, AND VIOLATING LAW YOU COMMAND ME TO BE STRUCK? 3Then Paul said to him, “God will strike you, you whitewashed wall! You sit here to judge me according to the law, yet you yourself violate the law by commanding that I be struck. ”
4THOSE WHO NOW STANDING BY SAID; THE HIGH PRIEST <THE> OF GOD DO YOU INSULT? 4But those standing nearby said, “How dare you insult the high priest of God! ”
5WAS SAYING THEN <THE> PAUL; NOT I HAD KNOWN, BROTHERS, THAT HE IS HIGH PRIEST; IT HAS BEEN WRITTEN FOR THAT [THE] RULER OF THE PEOPLE OF YOU NOT YOU WILL SPEAK EVIL [OF].’ 5“Brothers, ” Paul replied, I was not aware that he was the high priest, for it is written Do not speak evil about the ruler of your people.’*NoteCloseExodus 22:28 (see also LXX) ”
6HAVING KNOWN THEN <THE> PAUL THAT THE ONE PART CONSISTS OF SADDUCEES <THE> BUT THE OTHER OF PHARISEES HE WAS CRYING OUT IN THE COUNCIL; MEN BROTHERS, I MYSELF A PHARISEE AM, [THE] SON OF PHARISEES; CONCERNING [THE] HOPE AND RESURRECTION OF [THE] DEAD I MYSELF AM JUDGED. 6Then Paul, knowing that some of them were Sadducees and the others Pharisees, called out in the Sanhedrin, “Brothers, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee. It is because of my hope in the resurrection of the dead that I am on trial. ”
7THIS THEN OF HIM SAYING AROSE A DISSENSION BETWEEN THE PHARISEES AND OF THE SADDUCEES, AND WAS DIVIDED THE CROWD. 7As soon as he had said this, a dispute broke out between the Pharisees and Sadducees, and the assembly was divided.
8SADDUCEES INDEED FOR SAY NOT THERE TO BE RESURRECTION NEITHER [TO BE] ANGEL NOR [TO BE] SPIRIT; PHARISEES HOWEVER CONFESS <THE> BOTH. 8For the Sadducees say that there is neither a resurrection nor angels nor spirits, but the Pharisees acknowledge them all.
9AROSE THEN A CLAMOR GREAT; AND HAVING RISEN UP SOME OF THE SCRIBES OF THE PARTY OF THE PHARISEES THEY WERE CONTENDING SAYING; NO [THING] EVIL WE FIND IN <THE> MAN THIS; WHAT IF NOW A SPIRIT HAS SPOKEN TO HIM OR AN ANGEL SURELY WE SHALL BE FIGHTING GOD? 9A great clamor arose, and some scribes from the party of the Pharisees got up and contended sharply, “We find nothing wrong with this man. What if a spirit or an angel has spoken to him? ”
10GREAT THEN IS BECOMING DISSENSION, HAVING FEARED THE COMMANDER LEST MAY BE TORN TO PIECES <THE> PAUL BY THEM HE COMMANDED THE TROOP HAVING GONE DOWN AND TO TAKE BY FORCE HIM FROM MIDST OF THEM, TO BRING [HIM] THEN INTO THE BARRACKS. 10The dispute grew so violent that the commander was afraid they would tear Paul to pieces. He ordered the soldiers to go down and remove him by force and bring him into the barracks.
11<THE> BUT ON THE FOLLOWING NIGHT HAVING STOOD BY HIM THE LORD SAID; TAKE COURAGE PAUL; AS FOR YOU HAVE FULLY TESTIFIED <THE> ABOUT ME AT JERUSALEM, THUS YOU IT BEHOOVES ALSO IN ROME TO TESTIFY. 11The following night the Lord stood near Paul and said, “Take courage! As you have testified about Me in Jerusalem, so also you must testify in Rome. ”
12WHEN IT WAS BECOMING THEN DAY HAVING MADE A CONSPIRACY THE JEWS PUT UNDER AN OATH THEMSELVES DECLARING NEITHER TO EAT NOR TO DRINK UNTIL THAT THEY MAY KILL <THE> PAUL. The Plot to Kill Paul (John 16:1–4) 12When daylight came, the Jews formed a conspiracy and bound themselves with an oath not to eat or drink until they had killed Paul.
13THERE WERE NOW MORE THAN FORTY <THE> THIS <THE> PLOT HAVING MADE; 13More than forty of them were involved in this plot.
14WHO HAVING COME TO THE CHIEF PRIESTS AND TO THE ELDERS SAID; WITH AN OATH WE HAVE BOUND OURSELVES NOTHING TO EAT UNTIL THAT WE MAY KILL <THE> PAUL. 14They went to the chief priests and elders and said, “We have bound ourselves with a solemn oath not to eat anything until we have killed Paul.
15NOW THEREFORE YOU YOURSELVES DO MAKE A REPORT TO THE COMMANDER ALONG WITH THE COUNCIL, SO THAT TOMORROW HE MAY BRING DOWN HIM TO YOU AS BEING ABOUT TO EXAMINE MORE EARNESTLY THE [THINGS] ABOUT HIM; WE OURSELVES THEN BEFORE <THE> DRAWING NEAR OF HIM READY WE ARE <THE> TO EXECUTE HIM. 15Now then, you and the Sanhedrin petition the commander to bring him down to you on the pretext of examining his case more carefully. We are ready to kill him on the way. ”
16HAVING HEARD HOWEVER THE SON OF THE SISTER OF PAUL OF THE AMBUSH, HAVING COME NEAR AND HAVING ENTERED INTO THE BARRACKS HE REPORTED [IT] <THE> TO PAUL. 16But when the son of Paul’s sister heard about the plot,*NoteCloseOr the ambush he went into the barracks and told Paul.
17HAVING CALLED TO [HIM] THEN <THE> PAUL ONE OF THE CENTURIONS HE WAS SAYING; <THE> YOUNG MAN THIS DO TAKE TO THE COMMANDER; HE HAS FOR TO REPORT SOMETHING TO HIM. 17Then Paul called one of the centurions and said, “Take this young man to the commander; he has something to tell him. ”
18THE [ONE] INDEED THEREFORE HAVING TAKEN HIM HE BROUGHT [HIM] TO THE COMMANDER AND HE SAYS; THE PRISONER PAUL HAVING CALLED TO ME HE ASKED [ME] THIS <THE> YOUNG MAN TO LEAD TO YOU HAVING SOMETHING TO SAY TO YOU. 18So the centurion took him to the commander and said, “Paul the prisoner sent and asked me to bring this young man to you. He has something to tell you. ”
19HAVING TAKEN HOLD THEN OF THE HAND OF HIM THE COMMANDER AND HAVING WITHDRAWN IN PRIVATE HE WAS INQUIRING: WHAT IS IT THAT YOU HAVE TO REPORT TO ME? 19The commander took the young man by the hand, drew him aside, and asked, “What do you need to tell me? ”
20HE SAID THEN THAT THE JEWS HAVE AGREED <THE> TO ASK YOU THAT TOMORROW <THE> PAUL YOU MAY BRING DOWN INTO THE COUNCIL AS IT BEING ABOUT SOMETHING MORE EARNESTLY TO INQUIRE ABOUT HIM. 20He answered, “The Jews have agreed to ask you to bring Paul to the Sanhedrin tomorrow on the pretext of acquiring more information about him.
21YOU YOURSELF THEREFORE NOT MAY BE PERSUADED BY THEM, LIE IN WAIT INDEED FOR HIM OF THEM MEN MORE THAN FORTY, WHO WAS PUT UNDER AN OATH THEMSELVES NEITHER TO EAT NOR TO DRINK UNTIL THAT THEY MAY EXECUTE HIM AND NOW THEY ARE READY AWAITING THE FROM YOU PROMISE. 21Do not let them persuade you, because more than forty men are waiting to ambush him. They have bound themselves with an oath not to eat or drink until they have killed him; they are ready now, awaiting your consent. ”
22<THE> INDEED THEREFORE [THE] COMMANDER DISMISSED THE YOUNG MAN HAVING INSTRUCTED [HIM] NO ONE TO TELL THAT THESE THINGS YOU REPORTED TO ME. 22So the commander dismissed the young man and instructed him, “Do not tell anyone that you have reported this to me. ”
23AND HAVING CALLED TO [HIM] TWO CERTAIN OF THE CENTURIONS HE SAID; DO PREPARE SOLDIERS TWO HUNDRED SO THAT THEY MAY GO AS FAR AS CAESAREA AND HORSEMEN SEVENTY AND SPEARMEN TWO HUNDRED FOR [THE] THIRD HOUR OF THE NIGHT, Paul Sent to Felix 23Then he called two of his centurions and said, “Prepare two hundred soldiers, seventy horsemen, and two hundred spearmen to go to Caesarea in the third hour of the night.*NoteCloseThat is, at nine tonight
24MOUNTS THEN PROVIDING SO THAT HAVING SET UPON [THEM] <THE> PAUL THEY MAY BRING [HIM] SAFELY TO FELIX THE GOVERNOR; 24Provide mounts for Paul to take him safely to Governor Felix. ”
26CLAUDIUS LYSIAS TO THE MOST EXCELLENT GOVERNOR FELIX GREETING. 26Claudius Lysias, To His Excellency, Governor Felix: Greetings.
27<THE> MAN THIS HAVING BEEN SEIZED BY THE JEWS AND BEING ABOUT TO BE EXECUTED BY THEM, HAVING COME UP WITH THE TROOP I RESCUED HIM HAVING LEARNED THAT A ROMAN HE IS; 27This man was seized by the Jews, and they were about to kill him when I came with my troops to rescue him. For I had learned that he is a Roman citizen,
28RESOLVING THEN TO KNOW THE CHARGE ON ACCOUNT OF WHICH THEY WERE ACCUSING HIM I BROUGHT DOWN HIM TO THE COUNCIL OF THEM; 28and since I wanted to understand their charges against him, I brought him down to their Sanhedrin.
29WHOM I FOUND BEING ACCUSED CONCERNING QUESTIONS OF THE LAW OF THEM, NOT HOWEVER [OF ANYTHING] WORTHY OF DEATH OR OF CHAINS HAVING ACCUSATION. 29I found that the accusation involved questions about their own law, but there was no charge worthy of death or imprisonment.
30WHEN WAS BEING DISCLOSED THEN TO ME A PLOT THAT AGAINST THE MAN TO BE ABOUT TO GOING TO HAPPEN BY THE JEWS AT ONCE I SENT [HIM] TO YOU HAVING INSTRUCTED ALSO TO THE ACCUSERS TO SPEAK THE [THINGS] AGAINST HIM BEFORE YOU. FAREWELL! 30When I was informed that there was a plot against the man, I sent him to you at once. I also instructed his accusers to present their case against him before you.
31<THE> INDEED THEREFORE [THE] SOLDIERS ACCORDING TO THAT ORDERED THEM HAVING TAKEN <THE> PAUL BROUGHT [HIM] THROUGH <THE> NIGHT TO <THE> ANTIPATRIS. 31So the soldiers followed their orders and brought Paul by night to Antipatris.
32ON THE NOW NEXT DAY HAVING ALLOWED THE HORSEMEN TO GO WITH HIM THEY RETURNED TO THE BARRACKS; 32The next day they returned to the barracks and let the horsemen go on with him.
33WHO HAVING ENTERED INTO <THE> CAESAREA AND HAVING DELIVERED THE LETTER TO THE GOVERNOR PRESENTED ALSO <THE> PAUL TO HIM. 33When the horsemen arrived in Caesarea, they delivered the letter to the governor and presented Paul to him.
34HAVING READ [IT] THEN <THE> GOVERNOR AND HAVING ASKED FROM WHAT PROVINCE HE IS AND HAVING LEARNED THAT FROM CILICIA [HE IS], 34The governor read the letter and asked what province Paul was from. Learning that he was from Cilicia,
35I WILL HEAR FULLY YOU, HE WAS SAYING, WHEN ALSO THE ACCUSERS OF YOU MAY HAVE ARRIVED. HAVING COMMANDED THEN IN THE PRAETORIUM <THE> OF HEROD TO BE GUARDED HIM. 35he said, “I will hear your case when your accusers arrive. ” Then he ordered that Paul be kept under guard in Herod’s Praetorium.
