1 AND IT WAS WHEN HEARD ADONI- ZEDEK [THE] KING OF JERUSALEM THAT HE HAD CAPTURED JOSHUA <OBJ.> <THE> AI AND HE HAD TOTALLY DESTROYED IT JUST AS HE HAD DONE TO JERICHO AND TO KING ITS SO HE HAD DONE TO <THE> AI AND TO KING ITS AND THAT THEY HAD MADE PEACE [THE] INHABITANTS OF GIBEON WITH ISRAEL AND THEY WERE IN MIDST THEIR
The Day the Sun Stood Still
1 Now Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem heard that Joshua had captured Ai and devoted it to destruction doing to Ai and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king— and that the people of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were living near them.
2 AND THEY WERE AFRAID VERY FOR [WAS] A CITY GREAT GIBEON LIKE ONE OF [THE] CITIES OF <THE> ROYALTY AND FOR IT [WAS] GREAT MORE THAN <THE> AI AND ALL MEN ITS [WERE] WARRIORS
2 So Adoni-zedek and his people were greatly alarmed, because Gibeon was a great city, like one of the royal cities; it was larger than Ai, and all its men were mighty.
3 AND HE SENT ADONI- ZEDEK [THE] KING OF JERUSALEM TO HOHAM [THE] KING OF HEBRON AND TO PIRAM [THE] KING OF JARMUTH AND TO JAPHIA [THE] KING OF LACHISH AND TO DEBIR [THE] KING OF EGLON <TO> SAYING
3 Therefore Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem sent word to Hoham king of Hebron, Piram king of Jarmuth, Japhia king of Lachish, and Debir king of Eglon, saying,
4 COME UP TO ME AND HELP ME SO WE MAY ATTACK <OBJ.> GIBEON FOR IT HAS MADE PEACE WITH JOSHUA AND WITH [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL
4 “Come up and help me. We will attack Gibeon, because they have made peace with Joshua and the Israelites
5 AND THEY GATHERED AND THEY WENT UP [THE] FIVE [THE] KINGS OF THE AMORITE[S] [THE] KING OF JERUSALEM [THE] KING OF HEBRON [THE] KING OF JARMUTH [THE] KING OF LACHISH [THE] KING OF EGLON THEY AND ALL ARMIES THEIR AND THEY ENCAMPED ON GIBEON AND THEY WAGED WAR ON IT
5 So the five kings of the Amorites— the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish, and Eglon— joined forces and advanced with all their armies. They camped before Gibeon and made war against it.
6 AND THEY SENT [THE] MEN OF GIBEON TO JOSHUA TO THE CAMP <THE> GILGAL TOWARDS <TO> SAYING MAY NOT YOU LET DROP HANDS YOUR FROM SERVANTS YOUR COME UP TO US QUICKLY AND SAVE ! <TO> <THE> US AND HELP US FOR THEY HAVE GATHERED TOGETHER AGAINST US ALL [THE] KINGS OF THE AMORITE[S] [THE] INHABITANTS OF THE HILL COUNTRY
6 Then the men of Gibeon sent word to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal: “Do not abandon your servants. Come quickly and save us! Help us, because all the kings of the Amorites from the hill country have joined forces against us.”
7 AND HE WENT UP JOSHUA FROM <THE> GILGAL HE AND ALL [THE] PEOPLE OF <THE> WAR WITH HIM AND ALL [THE] MIGHTY [MEN] OF <THE> STRENGTH
7 So Joshua and his whole army, including all the mighty men of valor, came from Gilgal.
8 AND HE SAID YAHWEH TO JOSHUA MAY NOT YOU BE AFRAID FROM <THE> THEM FOR IN HAND YOUR I HAVE GIVEN THEM NOT HE WILL MAKE A STAND ANYONE FROM <THE> THEM IN FACE YOUR
8 The LORD said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them, for I have delivered them into your hand. Not one of them shall stand against you.”
9 AND HE CAME TO THEM JOSHUA SUDDENLY ALL THE NIGHT HE HAD GONE UP FROM <THE> GILGAL
9 After marching all night from Gilgal, Joshua caught them by surprise.
10 AND HE ROUTED THEM YAHWEH <TO> BEFORE ISRAEL AND HE STRUCK DOWN THEM A DEFEAT GREAT AT GIBEON AND HE PURSUED THEM [THE] DIRECTION OF [THE] ASCENT OF BETH HORON AND HE STRUCK DOWN THEM TO AZEKAH AND TO MAKKEDAH
10 And the LORD threw them into confusion before Israel, who defeated them in a great slaughter at Gibeon, pursued them along the ascent to Beth-horon, and struck them down as far as Azekah and Makkedah.
11 AND IT WAS WHEN FLED THEY FROM BEFORE ISRAEL THEY [WERE] AT [THE] DESCENT OF BETH HORON AND YAHWEH HE THREW ON THEM STONES LARGE FROM THE HEAVENS TO AZEKAH AND THEY DIED [WERE] MANY [THOSE] WHO THEY DIED BY [THE] STONES OF THE HAIL MORE THAN [THOSE] WHOM THEY KILLED [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL WITH THE SWORD
11 As they fled before Israel along the descent from Beth-horon to Azekah, the LORD cast down on them large hailstones from the sky, and more of them were killed by the hailstones than by the swords of the Israelites.
12 THEN HE SPOKE JOSHUA TO YAHWEH ON [THE] DAY DELIVERED UP YAHWEH <OBJ.> THE AMORITE[S] <TO> BEFORE [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL AND HE SAID TO [THE] EYES OF ISRAEL O SUN AT GIBEON BE STILL AND O MOON IN [THE] VALLEY AIJALON
12 On the day that the LORD gave the Amorites over to the Israelites Joshua spoke to the LORD in the presence of Israel:
“O sun, stand still over Gibeon,
O moon, over the Valley of Aijalon.”
13 AND IT WAS STILL THE SUN AND [THE] MOON IT STOOD STILL UNTIL IT AVENGED ITSELF ON [THE] NATION ENEMIES ITS ¿ NOT [IS] IT WRITTEN ON [THE] SCROLL OF <THE> JASHAR AND IT STOOD STILL THE SUN IN [THE] MIDDLE OF THE HEAVENS AND NOT IT HASTENED TO GO ABOUT A DAY COMPLETE
13 So the sun stood still
and the moon stopped
until the nation took vengeance
upon its enemies.
Is this not written in the Book of Jashar?
“So the sun stopped
in the middle of the sky
and delayed going down
about a full day.”
14 AND NOT IT HAS BEEN LIKE THE DAY <THE> THAT <TO> BEFORE IT AND AFTER IT TO LISTEN YAHWEH TO [THE] VOICE OF A MAN FOR YAHWEH [WAS] FIGHTING FOR ISRAEL
14 There has been no day like it before or since, when the LORD listened to the voice of a man, because the LORD fought for Israel.
15 AND HE RETURNED JOSHUA AND ALL ISRAEL WITH HIM TO THE CAMP <THE> GILGAL TOWARDS
15 Then Joshua returned with all Israel to the camp at Gilgal.
16 AND THEY FLED [THE] FIVE THE KINGS <THE> THESE AND THEY HID THEMSELVES IN THE CAVE AT MAKKEDAH
The Victory at Makkedah
16 Now the five kings had fled and hidden in the cave at Makkedah.
17 AND IT WAS TOLD TO JOSHUA <TO> SAYING THEY HAVE BEEN FOUND [THE] FIVE THE KINGS HIDDEN IN THE CAVE AT MAKKEDAH
17 And Joshua was informed: “The five kings have been found; they are hiding in the cave at Makkedah.”
18 AND HE SAID JOSHUA ROLL STONES LARGE INTO [THE] MOUTH OF THE CAVE AND APPOINT OVER IT MEN TO GUARD THEM
18 So Joshua said, “Roll large stones against the mouth of the cave, and post men there to guard them.
19 AND YOU MAY NOT YOU DELAY PURSUE AFTER ENEMIES YOUR AND YOU WILL ATTACK IN [THE] REAR <OBJ.> THEM MAY NOT YOU PERMIT THEM TO GO INTO CITIES THEIR FOR HE HAS GIVEN THEM YAHWEH GOD YOUR IN HAND YOUR
19 But you, do not stop there. Pursue your enemies and attack them from behind. Do not let them reach their cities, for the LORD your God has delivered them into your hand.”
20 AND IT WAS WHEN FINISHED JOSHUA AND [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL TO STRIKE DOWN THEM A DEFEAT GREAT VERY UNTIL WERE FINISHED THEY AND THE SURVIVORS THEY SURVIVED OF <THE> THEM AND THEY WENT INTO [THE] CITIES OF <THE> FORTIFICATION
20 So Joshua and the Israelites continued to inflict a terrible slaughter until they had finished them off, and the remaining survivors retreated to the fortified cities.
21 AND THEY RETURNED ALL THE PEOPLE TO THE CAMP TO JOSHUA MAKKEDAH IN PEACE NOT HE SHARPENED TO [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL TO ANYONE <OBJ.> TONGUE HIS
21 The whole army returned safely to Joshua in the camp at Makkedah, and no one dared to utter a word against the Israelites.
22 AND HE SAID JOSHUA OPEN <OBJ.> [THE] MOUTH OF THE CAVE AND BRING OUT TO ME <OBJ.> [THE] FIVE THE KINGS <THE> THESE FROM THE CAVE
22 Then Joshua said, “Open the mouth of the cave and bring those five kings out to me.”
23 AND THEY DID THUS AND THEY BROUGHT OUT TO HIM <OBJ.> [THE] FIVE THE KINGS <THE> THESE FROM THE CAVE <OBJ.> [THE] KING OF JERUSALEM <OBJ.> [THE] KING OF HEBRON <OBJ.> [THE] KING OF JARMUTH <OBJ.> [THE] KING OF LACHISH <OBJ.> [THE] KING OF EGLON
23 So they brought the five kings out of the cave— the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish, and Eglon.
24 AND IT WAS WHEN BROUGHT OUT THEY <OBJ.> THE KINGS <THE> THESE TO JOSHUA AND HE SUMMONED JOSHUA <TO> EVERY <THE> MAN OF ISRAEL AND HE SAID TO [THE] COMMANDERS OF [THE] MEN OF <THE> WAR WHO HAD GONE WITH HIM DRAW NEAR PUT <OBJ.> FEET YOUR ON [THE] NECKS OF THE KINGS <THE> THESE AND THEY DREW NEAR AND THEY PUT <OBJ.> FEET THEIR ON NECKS THEIR
24 When they had brought the kings to Joshua, he summoned all the men of Israel and said to the army commanders who had accompanied him, “Come here and put your feet on the necks of these kings.”
So the commanders came forward and put their feet on their necks.
25 AND HE SAID TO THEM JOSHUA MAY NOT YOU BE AFRAID AND MAY NOT YOU BE DISMAYED BE STRONG AND BE BOLD FOR THUS HE WILL DO YAHWEH TO ALL ENEMIES YOUR WHOM YOU [ARE] FIGHTING <OBJ.> THEM
25 “Do not be afraid or discouraged,” Joshua said. “Be strong and courageous, for the LORD will do this to all the enemies you fight.”
26 AND HE STRUCK THEM JOSHUA AFTER THUS AND HE KILLED THEM AND HE HANGED THEM ON FIVE TREES AND THEY WERE HANGED ON THE TREES UNTIL THE EVENING
26 After this, Joshua struck down and killed the kings, and he hung their bodies on five trees and left them there until evening.
27 AND IT WAS TO [THE] TIME OF [THE] GOING OF THE SUN HE COMMANDED JOSHUA AND PEOPLE TOOK DOWN THEM FROM ON THE TREES AND THEY THREW THEM INTO THE CAVE WHERE THEY HAD HIDDEN THEMSELVES THERE AND THEY PUT STONES LARGE OVER [THE] MOUTH OF THE CAVE UNTIL [THE] SUBSTANCE OF THE DAY <THE> THIS
27 At sunset Joshua ordered that they be taken down from the trees and thrown into the cave in which they had hidden. Then large stones were placed against the mouth of the cave, and the stones are there to this day.
28 AND <OBJ.> MAKKEDAH HE CAPTURED JOSHUA ON THE DAY <THE> THAT AND HE STRUCK IT TO [THE] MOUTH OF [THE] SWORD AND <OBJ.> KING ITS HE TOTALLY DESTROYED <OBJ.> THEM AND <OBJ.> EVERY <THE> PERSON WHO [WAS] IN <THE> IT NOT HE LEFT A SURVIVOR AND HE DID TO [THE] KING OF MAKKEDAH JUST AS HE HAD DONE TO [THE] KING OF JERICHO
28 On that day Joshua captured Makkedah and put it to the sword, along with its king. He devoted to destruction everyone in the city, leaving no survivors. So he did to the king of Makkedah as he had done to the king of Jericho.
29 AND HE PASSED ON JOSHUA AND ALL ISRAEL WITH HIM FROM MAKKEDAH LIBNAH AND HE ENGAGED IN BATTLE WITH LIBNAH
Conquest of the Southern Cities
29 Then Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Makkedah to Libnah and fought against Libnah.
30 AND HE GAVE YAHWEH ALSO <OBJ.> IT IN [THE] HAND OF ISRAEL AND <OBJ.> KING ITS AND HE STRUCK IT TO [THE] MOUTH OF [THE] SWORD AND <OBJ.> EVERY <THE> PERSON WHO [WAS] IN <THE> IT NOT HE LEFT IN <THE> IT A SURVIVOR AND HE DID TO KING ITS JUST AS HE HAD DONE TO [THE] KING OF JERICHO
30 And the LORD also delivered that city and its king into the hand of Israel, and Joshua put all the people to the sword, leaving no survivors. And he did to the king of Libnah as he had done to the king of Jericho.
31 AND HE PASSED ON JOSHUA AND ALL ISRAEL WITH HIM FROM LIBNAH LACHISH TOWARDS AND HE ENCAMPED ON IT AND HE ENGAGED IN BATTLE AGAINST <THE> IT
31 And Joshua and all Israel with him moved on from Libnah to Lachish. They laid siege to it and fought against it.
32 AND HE GAVE YAHWEH <OBJ.> LACHISH IN [THE] HAND OF ISRAEL AND HE CAPTURED IT ON THE DAY <THE> SECOND AND HE STRUCK IT TO [THE] MOUTH OF [THE] SWORD AND <OBJ.> EVERY <THE> PERSON WHO [WAS] IN <THE> IT ACCORDING TO ALL THAT HE HAD DONE TO LIBNAH
32 And the LORD delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel, and Joshua captured it on the second day. He put all the people to the sword, just as he had done to Libnah.
33 THEN HE CAME UP HORAM [THE] KING OF GEZER TO HELP <OBJ.> LACHISH AND HE ATTACKED HIM JOSHUA AND <OBJ.> PEOPLE HIS UNTIL NOT HE HAD LEFT TO <THE> HIM A SURVIVOR
33 At that time Horam king of Gezer went to help Lachish, but Joshua struck him down along with his people, leaving no survivors.
34 AND HE PASSED ON JOSHUA AND ALL ISRAEL WITH HIM FROM LACHISH EGLON TOWARDS AND THEY ENCAMPED ON IT AND THEY ENGAGED IN BATTLE ON IT
34 So Joshua moved on from Lachish to Eglon, and all Israel with him. They laid siege to it and fought against it.
35 AND THEY CAPTURED IT ON THE DAY <THE> THAT AND THEY STRUCK IT TO [THE] MOUTH OF [THE] SWORD AND <OBJ.> EVERY <THE> PERSON WHO [WAS] IN <THE> IT ON THE DAY <THE> THAT HE TOTALLY DESTROYED ACCORDING TO ALL THAT HE HAD DONE TO LACHISH
35 That day they captured Eglon and put it to the sword, and Joshua devoted to destruction everyone in the city just as he had done to Lachish.
36 AND HE WENT UP JOSHUA AND ALL ISRAEL WITH HIM FROM EGLON <TOWARDS> HEBRON TOWARDS AND THEY ENGAGED IN BATTLE ON IT
36 Then Joshua and all Israel with him went up from Eglon to Hebron and fought against it.
37 AND THEY CAPTURED IT AND THEY STRUCK IT TO [THE] MOUTH OF [THE] SWORD AND <OBJ.> KING ITS AND <OBJ.> ALL CITIES ITS AND <OBJ.> EVERY <THE> PERSON WHO [WAS] IN <THE> IT NOT HE LEFT A SURVIVOR ACCORDING TO ALL THAT HE HAD DONE TO EGLON AND HE TOTALLY DESTROYED <OBJ.> IT AND <OBJ.> EVERY <THE> PERSON WHO [WAS] IN <THE> IT
37 They captured it and put to the sword its king, all its villages, and all the people. Joshua left no survivors, just as he had done at Eglon; he devoted to destruction Hebron and everyone in it.
38 AND HE TURNED BACK JOSHUA AND ALL ISRAEL WITH HIM DEBIR TOWARDS AND HE ENGAGED IN BATTLE ON IT
38 Finally Joshua and all Israel with him turned toward Debir and fought against it.
39 AND HE CAPTURED IT AND <OBJ.> KING ITS AND <OBJ.> ALL CITIES ITS AND THEY STRUCK THEM TO [THE] MOUTH OF [THE] SWORD AND THEY TOTALLY DESTROYED <OBJ.> EVERY PERSON WHO [WAS] IN <THE> IT NOT HE LEFT A SURVIVOR JUST AS HE HAD DONE TO HEBRON SO HE DID TO DEBIR <TOWARDS> AND TO KING ITS AND JUST AS HE HAD DONE TO LIBNAH AND TO KING ITS
39 And they captured Debir, its king, and all its villages. They put them to the sword and devoted to destruction everyone in the city, leaving no survivors. Joshua did to Debir and its king as he had done to Hebron and as he had done to Libnah and its king.
40 AND HE DEFEATED JOSHUA <OBJ.> ALL THE LAND THE HILL COUNTRY AND THE NEGEV AND THE SHEPHELAH AND THE SLOPES AND <OBJ.> ALL KINGS THEIR NOT HE LEFT A SURVIVOR AND <OBJ.> EVERY <THE> BREATHING THING HE TOTALLY DESTROYED JUST AS HE HAD COMMANDED YAHWEH [THE] GOD OF ISRAEL
40 So Joshua conquered the whole region— the hill country, the Negev, the foothills, and the slopes, together with all their kings— leaving no survivors. He devoted to destruction everything that breathed, just as the LORD, the God of Israel, had commanded.
41 AND HE STRUCK DOWN THEM JOSHUA FROM KADESH BARNEA AND TO GAZA AND <OBJ.> ALL [THE] LAND OF GOSHEN AND TO GIBEON
41 Joshua conquered the area from Kadesh-barnea to Gaza, and the whole region of Goshen as far as Gibeon.
42 AND <OBJ.> ALL THE KINGS <THE> THESE AND <OBJ.> LAND THEIR HE CAPTURED JOSHUA TIME ONE FOR YAHWEH [THE] GOD OF ISRAEL [WAS] FIGHTING FOR ISRAEL
42 And because the LORD, the God of Israel, fought for Israel, Joshua captured all these kings and their land in one campaign.
43 AND HE RETURNED JOSHUA AND ALL ISRAEL WITH HIM TO THE CAMP <THE> GILGAL TOWARDS
43 Then Joshua returned with all Israel to the camp at Gilgal.
