35NOT IT WAS ANYTHING FROM ALL THAT HE HAD COMMANDED MOSES WHICH NOT HE READ ALOUD JOSHUA BEFORE ALL [THE] ASSEMBLY OF ISRAEL AND THE WOMEN AND THE LITTLE ONE[S] AND THE SOJOURNER[S] WHO WENT IN MIDST THEIR 35There was not a word of all that Moses had commanded that Joshua failed to read before the whole assembly of Israel, including the women, the little ones, and the foreigners who lived among them.
1AND IT WAS WHEN HEARD ALL THE KINGS WHO [WERE] ON [THE] OTHER SIDE OF THE JORDAN IN THE HILL COUNTRY AND IN THE SHEPHELAH AND IN ALL [THE] COAST OF THE SEA <THE> GREAT TO [THE] FRONT OF <THE> LEBANON THE HITTITE[S] AND THE AMORITE[S] THE CANAANITE[S] THE PERIZZITE[S] THE HIVITE[S] AND THE JEBUSITE[S] The Deceit of the Gibeonites 1Now when news of this reached all the kings west of the Jordan— those in the hill country, the foothills,*NoteCloseHebrew Shephelah or lowlands; that is, the western foothills of Judea and all along the coast of the Great Sea*NoteCloseThat is, the Mediterranean Sea toward Lebanon (the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites, and Jebusites)—
2AND THEY GATHERED TOGETHER ALL TOGETHER TO WAGE WAR WITH JOSHUA AND WITH ISRAEL MOUTH ONE 2they came together to wage war against Joshua and Israel.
3AND [THE] INHABITANTS OF GIBEON THEY HEARD <OBJ.> [THAT] WHICH HE HAD DONE JOSHUA TO JERICHO AND TO <THE> AI 3But the people of Gibeon, having heard what Joshua had done to Jericho and Ai,
4AND THEY ACTED ALSO THEY WITH CUNNING AND THEY WENT AND THEY ACTED AS AMBASSADORS AND THEY TOOK SACKS WORN OUT FOR DONKEYS THEIR AND SKIN-BOTTLES OF WINE WORN OUT AND SPLIT AND TIED UP 4acted deceptively and set out as envoys,*NoteCloseOr set out with provisions carrying on their donkeys worn-out sacks and old wineskins, cracked and mended.
5AND SANDALS WORN OUT AND PATCHED [WERE] ON FEET THEIR AND GARMENTS WORN OUT [WERE] ON THEM AND ALL [THE] BREAD OF PROVISION[S] THEIR IT WAS DRIED UP IT WAS CRUMBS 5They put worn, patched sandals on their feet and threadbare clothing on their bodies, and their whole supply of bread was dry and moldy.
6AND THEY WENT TO JOSHUA TO THE CAMP <THE> GILGAL AND THEY SAID TO HIM AND TO [THE] MAN OF ISRAEL FROM A LAND DISTANT WE HAVE COME AND THEREFORE MAKE TO <THE> US A COVENANT 6They went to Joshua in the camp at Gilgal and said to him and the men of Israel, “We have come from a distant land; please make a treaty*NoteCloseForms of the Hebrew berit are translated in most passages as covenant; also in verses 7, 11, 15, and 16. with us.”
7AND HE SAID [THE] MAN OF ISRAEL TO THE HIVITE[S] PERHAPS IN MIDST MY YOU [ARE] DWELLING AND HOW? WILL I MAKE TO <THE> YOU A COVENANT 7But the men of Israel said to the Hivites, “Perhaps you dwell near us. How can we make a treaty with you?”
8AND THEY SAID TO JOSHUA [ARE] SERVANTS YOUR WE AND HE SAID TO THEM JOSHUA WHO? [ARE] YOU AND FROM WHERE? DO YOU COME 8“We are your servants,” they said to Joshua. Then Joshua asked them, “Who are you and where have you come from?”
9AND THEY SAID TO HIM FROM A LAND DISTANT VERY THEY HAVE COME SERVANTS YOUR TO [THE] NAME OF YAHWEH GOD YOUR FOR WE HAVE HEARD [THE] REPORT OF HIM AND <OBJ.> ALL THAT HE DID IN EGYPT 9“Your servants have come from a very distant land,” they replied, “because of the fame of the LORD your God. For we have heard the reports about Him: all that He did in Egypt,
10AND <OBJ.> ALL THAT HE DID TO [THE] TWO [THE] KINGS OF THE AMORITE[S] WHO [WERE] ON [THE] OTHER SIDE OF THE JORDAN TO SIHON [THE] KING OF HESHBON AND TO OG [THE] KING OF <THE> BASHAN WHO [WAS] IN ASHTAROTH 10and all that He did to the two kings of the Amorites beyond the Jordan— Sihon king of Heshbon and Og king of Bashan, who reigned in Ashtaroth.
11AND THEY SAID TO US ELDERS OUR AND ALL [THE] INHABITANTS OF LAND OUR <TO> SAYING TAKE IN HAND YOUR PROVISION[S] FOR THE JOURNEY AND GO TO MEET THEM AND YOU WILL SAY TO THEM [ARE] SERVANTS YOUR WE AND THEREFORE MAKE TO <THE> US A COVENANT 11So the elders and inhabitants of our land told us, ‘Take provisions for your journey; go to meet them and say to them: We are your servants. Please make a treaty with us.’
12THIS BREAD OUR WARM WE TOOK AS OUR PROVISIONS <OBJ.> IT FROM HOMES OUR ON [THE] DAY CAME OUT WE TO COME TO YOU AND NOW HERE! IT HAS DRIED UP AND IT HAS BEEN CRUMBS 12This bread of ours was warm when we packed it at home on the day we left to come to you. But look, it is now dry and moldy.
13AND THESE [THE] SKIN-BOTTLES OF <THE> WINE WHICH WE FILLED NEW AND HERE! THEY HAVE SPLIT AND THESE GARMENTS OUR AND SANDALS OUR THEY HAVE WORN OUT FROM [THE] GREATNESS OF THE JOURNEY VERY 13These wineskins were new when we filled them, but look, they are cracked. And these clothes and sandals are worn out from our very long journey.”
14AND THEY TOOK THE MEN SOME OF PROVISION[S] THEIR AND <OBJ.> [THE] MOUTH OF YAHWEH NOT THEY ASKED 14Then the men of Israel sampled their provisions but did not seek the counsel of the LORD.
15AND HE MADE TO <THE> THEM JOSHUA PEACE AND HE MADE TO <THE> THEM A COVENANT TO LET LIVE THEM AND THEY SWORE AN OATH TO <THE> THEM [THE] LEADERS OF THE CONGREGATION 15And Joshua made a treaty of peace with them to let them live, and the leaders of the congregation swore an oath to them.
16AND IT WAS FROM [THE] END OF THREE DAYS AFTER THAT THEY HAD MADE TO <THE> THEM A COVENANT AND THEY HEARD THAT [WERE] NEAR THEY TO HIM AND IN MIDST HIS THEY [WERE] DWELLING 16Three days after they had made the treaty with the Gibeonites, the Israelites learned that they were neighbors, living among them.
17AND THEY SET OUT [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL AND THEY CAME TO CITIES THEIR ON THE DAY <THE> THIRD AND CITIES THEIR [WERE] GIBEON AND <THE> KEPHIRAH AND BEEROTH AND KIRIATH JEARIM 17So the Israelites set out and on the third day arrived at their cities— Gibeon, Chephirah, Beeroth, and Kiriath-jearim.
18AND NOT THEY ATTACKED THEM [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL FOR THEY HAD SWORN AN OATH TO <THE> THEM [THE] LEADERS OF THE CONGREGATION BY YAHWEH [THE] GOD OF ISRAEL AND THEY GRUMBLED ALL THE CONGREGATION ON THE LEADERS 18But the Israelites did not attack them, because the leaders of the congregation had sworn an oath to them by the LORD, the God of Israel. And the whole congregation grumbled against the leaders.
19AND THEY SAID ALL THE LEADERS TO ALL THE CONGREGATION WE WE HAVE SWORN AN OATH TO <THE> THEM BY YAHWEH [THE] GOD OF ISRAEL AND THEREFORE NOT WE ARE ABLE TO TOUCH <IN> <THE> THEM 19All the leaders answered “We have sworn an oath to them by the LORD, the God of Israel, and now we cannot touch them.
20THIS WE WILL DO TO <THE> THEM AND WE WILL LET LIVE <OBJ.> THEM AND NOT IT WILL BE TOWARDS US WRATH ON THE OATH WHICH WE SWORE TO <THE> THEM 20This is how we will treat them: We will let them live, so that no wrath will fall on us because of the oath we swore to them.”
21AND THEY SAID TO THEM THE LEADERS LET THEM LIVE AND THEY WERE CUTTERS OF WOOD<S> AND DRAWERS OF WATER FOR ALL THE CONGREGATION JUST AS THEY HAD SPOKEN TO <THE> THEM THE LEADERS 21They continued, “Let them live, but let them be woodcutters and water carriers for the whole congregation.” So the leaders kept their promise.
22AND HE SUMMONED <TO> <THE> THEM JOSHUA AND HE SPOKE TO THEM <TO> SAYING <TO> WHY? DID YOU DECEIVE <OBJ.> US <TO> SAYING [ARE] DISTANT WE FROM <THE> YOU VERY AND YOU IN MIDST OUR [ARE] DWELLING 22Then Joshua summoned the Gibeonites and said “Why did you deceive us by telling us you live far away from us, when in fact you live among us?
23AND THEREFORE [ARE] CURSED YOU AND NOT HE WILL BE CUT OFF FROM <THE> YOU A SLAVE AND CUTTERS OF WOOD<S> AND DRAWERS OF WATER FOR [THE] HOUSE OF GOD MY 23Now therefore you are under a curse and will perpetually serve as woodcutters and water carriers for the house of my God.”
24AND THEY ANSWERED <OBJ.> JOSHUA AND THEY SAID THAT CERTAINLY <TO TELL> IT WAS TOLD TO SERVANTS YOUR <OBJ.> THIS: HE HAD COMMANDED YAHWEH GOD YOUR <OBJ.> MOSES SERVANT HIS TO GIVE TO <THE> YOU <OBJ.> ALL THE LAND AND TO DESTROY <OBJ.> ALL [THE] INHABITANTS OF THE LAND FROM BEFORE YOU AND WE WERE AFRAID VERY FOR LIVES OUR <FROM> BECAUSE OF YOU AND WE DID <OBJ.> THE THING <THE> THIS 24The Gibeonites answered. “Your servants. were told clearly that the LORD your God had commanded His servant Moses to give you all the land and wipe out all its inhabitants before you. So we greatly feared for our lives because of you, and that is why we have done this.
25AND THEREFORE HERE WE [ARE] IN HAND YOUR ACCORDING TO THE GOOD AND ACCORDING TO THE RIGHT IN VIEW YOUR TO DO TO <THE> US DO 25Now we are in your hands. Do to us whatever seems good and right to you.”
26AND HE DID TO <THE> THEM THUS AND HE DELIVERED <OBJ.> THEM FROM [THE] HAND OF [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL AND NOT THEY KILLED THEM 26So Joshua did this and delivered them from the hands of the Israelites, and they did not kill the Gibeonites.
27AND HE MADE THEM JOSHUA ON THE DAY <THE> THAT CUTTERS OF WOOD<S> AND DRAWERS OF WATER FOR THE CONGREGATION AND FOR [THE] ALTAR OF YAHWEH UNTIL THE DAY <THE> THIS TO THE PLACE WHICH HE WILL CHOOSE 27On that day he made them woodcutters and water carriers, as they are to this day for the congregation of the LORD and for the altar at the place He would choose.
