1 AND HE SENT JOSHUA [THE] SON OF NUN FROM <THE> SHITTIM TWO MEN SPIES SECRETLY <TO> SAYING GO SEE <OBJ.> THE LAND AND <OBJ.> JERICHO AND THEY WENT AND THEY WENT [THE] HOUSE OF A WOMAN A PROSTITUTE AND NAME HER [WAS] RAHAB AND THEY LAY DOWN THERE <TOWARDS>
Rahab Welcomes the Spies
(Hebrews 11:30–31 )
1 Then Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two spies from Shittim, saying, “Go, inspect the land, especially Jericho.” So they went and entered the house of a prostitute named Rahab and stayed there.
2 AND IT WAS TOLD TO [THE] KING OF JERICHO <TO> SAYING HERE! MEN THEY HAVE COME HITHER THIS NIGHT FROM [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL TO SPY OUT <OBJ.> THE LAND
2 And it was reported to the king of Jericho: “Behold, some men of Israel have come here tonight to spy out the land.”
3 AND HE SENT [THE] KING OF JERICHO TO RAHAB <TO> SAYING BRING OUT THE MEN WHO CAME TO YOU WHO THEY CAME TO HOUSE YOUR FOR TO SPY OUT <OBJ.> ALL THE LAND THEY HAVE COME
3 So the king of Jericho sent to Rahab and said, “Bring out the men who came to you and entered your house, for they have come to spy out the whole land.”
4 AND SHE TOOK THE WOMAN <OBJ.> [THE] TWO THE MEN AND SHE HID HIM AND SHE SAID RIGHT THEY CAME TO ME THE MEN AND NOT I KNEW FROM WHERE [WERE] THEY
4 But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them. So she said, “Yes, the men did come to me, but I did not know where they had come from.
5 AND IT WAS THE GATE [ABOUT] TO SHUT AT <THE> DARKNESS AND THE MEN THEY WENT OUT NOT I KNOW WHERE? DID THEY GO THE MEN PURSUE QUICKLY AFTER THEM FOR YOU WILL OVERTAKE THEM
5 At dusk, when the gate was about to close, the men went out, and I do not know which way they went. Pursue them quickly, and you may catch them!”
6 AND SHE SHE HAD TAKEN UP THEM THE ROOF TOWARDS AND SHE HAD HIDDEN THEM AMONG [THE] FLAX<ES> OF THE TREE THAT HAD BEEN ARRANGED BY <THE> HER ON THE ROOF
6 (But Rahab had taken them up to the roof and hidden them among the stalks of flax that she had laid out there.)
7 AND THE MEN THEY PURSUED AFTER THEM [THE] ROAD OF THE JORDAN TO THE FORDS AND THE GATE PEOPLE CLOSED AFTER JUST WHEN THEY HAD GONE OUT THE PURSUERS AFTER THEM
7 So the king’s men set out in pursuit of the spies along the road to the fords of the Jordan, and as soon as they had gone out, the gate was shut.
8 AND THEY NOT YET THEY HAD LAIN DOWN ! AND SHE SHE WENT UP TO THEM ON THE ROOF
The Promise to Rahab
8 Before the spies lay down for the night, Rahab went up on the roof
9 AND SHE SAID TO THE MEN I KNOW THAT HE HAS GIVEN YAHWEH TO <THE> YOU <OBJ.> THE LAND AND THAT IT HAS FALLEN DREAD YOUR ON US AND THAT THEY HAVE MELTED AWAY ALL [THE] INHABITANTS OF THE LAND <FROM> BECAUSE OF YOU
9 and said to them, “I know that the LORD has given you this land and that the fear of you has fallen on us, so that all who dwell in the land are melting in fear of you.
10 FOR WE HAVE HEARD <OBJ.> THIS: HE DRIED UP YAHWEH <OBJ.> [THE] WATERS OF [THE] SEA OF REED[S] FROM BEFORE YOU WHEN CAME OUT YOU FROM EGYPT AND [THAT] WHICH YOU DID TO [THE] TWO [THE] KINGS OF THE AMORITE[S] WHO [WAS] ON [THE] OTHER SIDE OF THE JORDAN TO SIHON AND TO OG WHOM YOU TOTALLY DESTROYED <OBJ.> THEM
10 For we have heard how the LORD dried up the waters of the Red Sea before you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites across the Jordan, whom you devoted to destruction.
11 AND WE HEARD AND IT MELTED HEART OUR AND NOT IT AROSE AGAIN SPIRIT IN ANYONE <FROM> BECAUSE OF YOU FOR YAHWEH GOD YOUR HE [IS] GOD IN THE HEAVENS <FROM> ABOVE AND ON THE EARTH <FROM> BENEATH
11 When we heard this, our hearts melted and everyone’s courage failed because of you, for the LORD your God is God in the heavens above and on the earth below.
12 AND THEREFORE SWEAR PLEASE TO <THE> ME BY YAHWEH FOR I HAVE DONE WITH YOU LOYALTY AND YOU WILL DO ALSO YOU WITH [THE] HOUSEHOLD OF FATHER MY LOYALTY AND YOU WILL GIVE TO <THE> ME A SIGN OF FAITHFULNESS
12 Now therefore, please swear to me by the LORD that you will indeed show kindness to my family, because I showed kindness to you. Give me a sure sign
13 AND YOU WILL LET LIVE <OBJ.> FATHER MY AND <OBJ.> MOTHER MY AND <OBJ.> BROTHERS MY AND <OBJ.> SISTERS MY AND <OBJ.> ALL WHO [BELONG] TO <THE> THEM AND YOU WILL DELIVER <OBJ.> LIVES OUR FROM DEATH
13 that you will spare the lives of my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them, and that you will deliver us from death.”
14 AND THEY SAID TO <THE> HER THE MEN LIFE OUR FOR YOU TO DIE IF NOT YOU WILL TELL <OBJ.> BUSINESS OUR THIS AND IT WILL BE WHEN GIVES YAHWEH TO <THE> US <OBJ.> THE LAND AND WE WILL DO WITH YOU LOYALTY AND FAITHFULNESS
14 “Our lives for your lives!” the men agreed “If you do not report our mission, we will show you kindness and faithfulness when the LORD gives us the land.”
15 AND SHE LET DOWN THEM WITH <THE> ROPE THROUGH THE WINDOW FOR HOUSE HER [WAS] IN [THE] WALL OF THE CITY WALL AND IN THE CITY WALL SHE [WAS] DWELLING
15 Then Rahab let them down by a rope through the window, since the house where she lived was built into the wall of the city.
16 AND SHE SAID TO <THE> THEM THE HILL COUNTRY TOWARDS GO LEST THEY SHOULD MEET <IN> <THE> YOU THE PURSUERS AND YOU WILL HIDE YOURSELVES THERE <TOWARDS> THREE DAYS UNTIL RETURN THE PURSUERS AND AFTER YOU WILL GO TO WAY YOUR
16 “Go to the hill country,” she said “so that your pursuers will not find you. Hide yourselves there for three days until they have returned; then go on your way.”
17 AND THEY SAID TO HER THE MEN [WILL BE] FREE WE FROM OATH YOUR <THE> THIS WHICH YOU MADE SWEAR US
17 The men said to her, “We will not be bound by this oath you made us swear
18 HERE! WE [ARE] ABOUT TO COME IN THE LAND <OBJ.> [THE] CORD OF [THE] THREAD OF THE SCARLET <THE> THIS YOU WILL BIND IN THE WINDOW WHICH YOU LET DOWN US IN <THE> IT AND <OBJ.> FATHER YOUR AND <OBJ.> MOTHER YOUR AND <OBJ.> BROTHERS YOUR AND <OBJ.> ALL [THE] HOUSEHOLD OF FATHER YOUR YOU WILL GATHER TO YOU THE HOUSE TOWARDS
18 unless, when we enter the land, you have tied this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down and unless you have brought your father and mother and brothers and all your family into your house.
19 AND IT WILL BE EVERY [ONE] WHO HE WILL GO OUT FROM [THE] DOORS OF HOUSE YOUR THE OUTSIDE TOWARDS BLOOD HIS [WILL BE] ON OWN HEAD HIS AND WE [WILL BE] FREE AND EVERY [ONE] WHO HE WILL BE WITH YOU IN THE HOUSE BLOOD HIS [WILL BE] ON HEAD OUR IF A HAND IT WILL BE ON <THE> HIM
19 If anyone goes out the door of your house into the street, his blood will be on his own head, and we will be innocent. But if a hand is laid on anyone with you in the house, his blood will be on our heads.
20 AND IF YOU WILL TELL <OBJ.> BUSINESS OUR THIS AND WE WILL BE FREE FROM OATH YOUR WHICH YOU MADE SWEAR US
20 And if you report our mission, we will be released from the oath you made us swear.”
21 AND SHE SAID ACCORDING TO WORDS YOUR [BE] SO IT AND SHE SENT OFF THEM AND THEY WENT AND SHE BOUND <OBJ.> [THE] CORD OF THE SCARLET IN THE WINDOW
21 “Let it be as you say she replied, and she sent them away. And when they had gone, she tied the scarlet cord in the window.
22 AND THEY WENT AND THEY CAME THE HILL COUNTRY TOWARDS AND THEY REMAINED THERE THREE DAYS UNTIL THEY RETURNED THE PURSUERS AND THEY SEARCHED THE PURSUERS IN ALL THE WAY AND NOT THEY FOUND [THEM]
22 So the spies went out into the hill country and stayed there three days, until their pursuers had returned without finding them, having searched all along the road.
23 AND THEY RETURNED [THE] TWO THE MEN AND THEY WENT DOWN FROM THE HILL COUNTRY AND THEY PASSED OVER AND THEY CAME TO JOSHUA [THE] SON OF NUN AND THEY RECOUNTED TO <THE> HIM <OBJ.> ALL THE [THINGS THAT] HAD FOUND WITH THEM
23 Then the two men started back, came down from the hill country, and crossed the river. So they came to Joshua son of Nun and reported all that had happened to them.
24 AND THEY SAID TO JOSHUA THAT HE HAS GIVEN YAHWEH IN HAND OUR <OBJ.> ALL THE LAND AND ALSO THEY HAVE MELTED AWAY ALL [THE] INHABITANTS OF THE LAND <FROM> BECAUSE OF US
24 “The LORD has surely delivered the entire land into our hands,” they said to Joshua. “Indeed, all who dwell in the land are melting in fear of us.”
