The Eastern Tribes Return Home
1 Then Joshua summoned the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh
2 AND HE SAID TO THEM YOU YOU HAVE KEPT <OBJ.> ALL THAT HE COMMANDED <OBJ.> YOU MOSES [THE] SERVANT OF YAHWEH AND YOU HAVE LISTENED TO VOICE MY TO ALL THAT I HAVE COMMANDED <OBJ.> YOU
2 and told them, “You have done all that Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, and you have obeyed my voice in all that I commanded you.
3 NOT YOU HAVE FORSAKEN <OBJ.> COUNTRYMEN YOUR THIS DAYS MANY UNTIL THE DAY <THE> THIS AND YOU HAVE KEPT <OBJ.> [THE] CHARGE OF [THE] COMMANDMENT OF YAHWEH GOD YOUR
3 All this time you have not deserted your brothers, up to this very day, but have kept the charge given you by the LORD your God.
4 AND NOW HE HAS GIVEN REST YAHWEH GOD YOUR TO COUNTRYMEN YOUR JUST AS HE SPOKE TO <THE> THEM AND THEREFORE TURN AND GO FOR <THE> YOURSELVES TO TENTS YOUR TO [THE] LAND OF POSSESSION YOUR WHICH HE GAVE TO <THE> YOU MOSES [THE] SERVANT OF YAHWEH ON [THE] OTHER SIDE OF THE JORDAN
4 And now that the LORD your God has given your brothers rest as He promised them, you may return to your homes in the land that Moses the servant of the LORD gave you across the Jordan.
5 ONLY TAKE CARE EXCEEDINGLY TO DO <OBJ.> THE COMMANDMENT AND <OBJ.> THE LAW WHICH HE COMMANDED <OBJ.> YOU MOSES [THE] SERVANT OF YAHWEH TO LOVE <OBJ.> YAHWEH GOD YOUR AND TO WALK IN ALL WAYS HIS AND TO KEEP COMMANDMENTS HIS AND TO CLEAVE TO HIM AND TO SERVE HIM WITH ALL HEART YOUR AND WITH ALL BEING YOUR
5 But be very careful to observe the commandment and the law that Moses the servant of the LORD gave you: to love the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways, to keep His commandments, to hold fast to Him, and to serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul.”
6 AND HE BLESSED THEM JOSHUA AND HE SENT AWAY THEM AND THEY WENT TO TENTS THEIR
6 So Joshua blessed them and sent them on their way, and they went to their homes.
7 AND TO [THE] HALF OF [THE] TRIBE OF <THE> MANASSEH HE HAD GIVEN MOSES IN <THE> BASHAN AND TO HALF OF IT HE HAD GIVEN JOSHUA WITH COUNTRYMEN THEIR ON [THE] OTHER SIDE OF THE JORDAN WEST -WARD AND ALSO IF HE SENT AWAY THEM JOSHUA TO TENTS THEIR AND HE BLESSED THEM
7 (To the half-tribe of Manasseh Moses had given land in Bashan, and to the other half Joshua gave land on the west side of the Jordan among their brothers.) When Joshua sent them to their homes he blessed them,
8 AND HE SAID TO THEM <TO> SAYING WITH RICHES GREAT RETURN TO TENTS YOUR AND WITH LIVESTOCK MUCH VERY WITH SILVER AND WITH GOLD AND WITH BRONZE AND WITH IRON AND WITH GARMENTS MANY VERY DIVIDE [THE] BOOTY OF ENEMIES YOUR WITH COUNTRYMEN YOUR
8 saying, “Return to your homes with your great wealth, with immense herds of livestock, with silver, gold, bronze, iron, and very many clothes. Divide with your brothers the spoil of your enemies.”
9 AND THEY RETURNED AND THEY WENT [THE] DESCENDANTS OF REUBEN AND [THE] DESCENDANTS OF GAD AND [THE] HALF OF [THE] TRIBE OF <THE> MANASSEH FROM WITH [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL FROM SHILOH WHICH [IS] IN [THE] LAND OF CANAAN TO GO TO [THE] LAND OF <THE> GILEAD TO [THE] LAND OF POSSESSION THEIR WHICH THEY HAD POSSESSIONS IN <THE> IT ON [THE] MOUTH OF YAHWEH BY [THE] HAND OF MOSES
The Altar of Witness
9 So the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh left the Israelites at Shiloh in the land of Canaan to return to their own land of Gilead, which they had acquired according to the command of the LORD through Moses.
10 AND THEY CAME TO GELILOTH OF THE JORDAN WHICH [IS] IN [THE] LAND OF CANAAN AND THEY BUILT [THE] DESCENDANTS OF REUBEN AND [THE] DESCENDANTS OF GAD AND [THE] HALF OF [THE] TRIBE OF <THE> MANASSEH THERE AN ALTAR AT THE JORDAN AN ALTAR LARGE OF APPEARANCE
10 And when they came to Geliloth near the Jordan in the land of Canaan, the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh built an imposing altar there by the Jordan.
11 AND THEY HEARD [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL <TO> SAYING THERE! THEY HAVE BUILT [THE] DESCENDANTS OF REUBEN AND [THE] DESCENDANTS OF GAD AND [THE] HALF OF [THE] TRIBE OF <THE> MANASSEH <OBJ.> THE ALTAR TO OPPOSITE TO [THE] LAND OF CANAAN TO GELILOTH OF THE JORDAN TO [THE] SIDE OF [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL
11 Then the Israelites received the report: “Behold, the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh have built an altar on the border of the land of Canaan, at Geliloth near the Jordan on the Israelite side.”
12 AND THEY HEARD [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL AND THEY ASSEMBLED ALL [THE] CONGREGATION OF [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL SHILOH TO GO UP ON THEM FOR <THE> WAR
12 And when they heard this, the whole congregation of Israel assembled at Shiloh to go to war against them.
13 AND THEY SENT [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL TO [THE] DESCENDANTS OF REUBEN AND TO [THE] DESCENDANTS OF GAD AND TO [THE] HALF OF [THE] TRIBE OF MANASSEH TO [THE] LAND OF <THE> GILEAD <OBJ.> PHINEHAS [THE] SON OF ELEAZAR THE PRIEST
13 The Israelites sent Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest to the land of Gilead to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh.
14 AND TEN LEADERS [WERE] WITH HIM A LEADER ONE A LEADER ONE TO [THE] HOUSE OF A FATHER TO ALL [THE] TRIBES OF ISRAEL AND EACH [WAS] A LEADER OF [THE] HOUSE OF FATHERS THEIR THEY [BELONG] TO [THE] FAMILIES OF ISRAEL
14 With him they sent ten chiefs— one family leader from each tribe of Israel, each the head of a family among the clans of Israel.
15 AND THEY WENT TO [THE] DESCENDANTS OF REUBEN AND TO [THE] DESCENDANTS OF GAD AND TO [THE] HALF OF [THE] TRIBE OF MANASSEH TO [THE] LAND OF <THE> GILEAD AND THEY SPOKE WITH THEM <TO> SAYING
15 They went to the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh in the land of Gilead and said to them,
16 THUS THEY SAY ALL [THE] CONGREGATION OF YAHWEH WHAT? [IS] THE UNFAITHFULNESS <THE> THIS WHICH YOU HAVE ACTED UNFAITHFULLY AGAINST [THE] GOD OF ISRAEL BY TURNING BACK THIS DAY FROM AFTER YAHWEH WHEN BUILT YOU FOR <THE> YOURSELVES AN ALTAR BY REBELLING YOUR THIS DAY AGAINST YAHWEH
16 “This is what the whole congregation of the LORD says: ‘What is this breach of faith you have committed today against the God of Israel by turning away from the LORD and building for yourselves an altar, that you might rebel against the LORD this day?
17 ¿ LITTLE FOR <THE> US [WAS] <OBJ.> [THE] INIQUITY OF PEOR WHICH NOT WE HAVE CLEANSED OURSELVES FROM IT UNTIL THE DAY <THE> THIS AND IT WAS THE PLAGUE AMONG [THE] CONGREGATION OF YAHWEH
17 Was not the sin of Peor enough for us from which we have not cleansed ourselves to this day? It even brought a plague upon the congregation of the LORD.
18 AND YOU YOU ARE TURNING AWAY THIS DAY FROM AFTER YAHWEH AND IT WILL BE YOU YOU ARE REBELLING THIS DAY AGAINST YAHWEH AND TOMORROW AGAINST ALL [THE] CONGREGATION OF ISRAEL HE WILL BE ANGRY
18 And now, would you turn away from the LORD? If you rebel today against the LORD, tomorrow He will be angry with the whole congregation of Israel.
19 AND SURELY IF [IS] UNCLEAN [THE] LAND OF POSSESSION YOUR PASS OVER FOR <THE> YOURSELVES INTO [THE] LAND OF [THE] POSSESSION OF YAHWEH WHERE IT DWELLS THERE [THE] TABERNACLE OF YAHWEH AND HAVE POSSESSIONS IN MIDST OF US AND AGAINST YAHWEH MAY NOT YOU REBEL AND <WITH THE> US TO MAY YOU REBEL WHEN BUILD YOU FOR <THE> YOURSELVES AN ALTAR <FROM> EXCEPT [THE] ALTAR OF YAHWEH GOD OUR
19 If indeed the land of your inheritance is unclean, then cross over to the land of the LORD’s possession, where the LORD’s tabernacle stands, and take possession of it among us. But do not rebel against the LORD or against us by building for yourselves an altar other than the altar of the LORD our God.
20 ¿ NOT ACHAN [THE] SON OF ZERAH DID HE ACT UNFAITHFULLY UNFAITHFULNESS IN THE DEVOTED THING[S] AND TOWARDS ALL [THE] CONGREGATION OF ISRAEL IT WAS ANGER AND HE [WAS] A MAN ONE NOT DID HE DIE? FOR INIQUITY HIS
20 Was not Achan son of Zerah unfaithful regarding what was set apart for destruction, bringing wrath upon the whole congregation of Israel? Yet it was not only Achan who perished because of his sin!’”
21 AND THEY ANSWERED [THE] DESCENDANTS OF REUBEN AND [THE] DESCENDANTS OF GAD AND [THE] HALF OF [THE] TRIBE OF <THE> MANASSEH AND THEY SPOKE WITH [THE] LEADERS OF [THE] FAMILIES OF ISRAEL
21 Then the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh answered the leaders of the clans of Israel:
22 EL GOD YAHWEH EL GOD YAHWEH HE [IS] KNOWING AND ISRAEL IT LET IT KNOW IF IN REBELLION AND IF IN UNFAITHFULNESS ON YAHWEH MAY NOT YOU SAVE US THE DAY <THE> THIS
22 “The LORD, the Mighty One, is God! The LORD, the Mighty One, is God! He knows, and may Israel also know. If this was in rebellion or breach of faith against the LORD, do not spare us today.
23 TO BUILD FOR <THE> OURSELVES AN ALTAR TO TURN BACK FROM AFTER YAHWEH AND IF TO OFFER UP ON IT A BURNT OFFERING AND A GRAIN OFFERING AND IF TO MAKE ON IT SACRIFICES OF PEACE OFFERINGS YAHWEH HE MAY HE REQUIRE
23 If we have built for ourselves an altar to turn away from Him and to offer burnt offerings and grain offerings on it, or to sacrifice peace offerings on it, may the LORD Himself hold us accountable.
24 AND IF NOT FROM ANXIETY FROM A MATTER WE HAVE DONE <OBJ.> THIS <TO> SAYING TOMORROW THEY WILL SAY DESCENDANTS YOUR TO DESCENDANTS OUR <TO> SAYING WHAT? [IS] TO YOU AND TO YAHWEH [THE] GOD OF ISRAEL
24 But in fact we have done this for fear that in the future your descendants might say to ours, ‘What have you to do with the LORD, the God of Israel?
25 AND A BORDER HE HAS PUT YAHWEH BETWEEN US AND BETWEEN YOU [THE] DESCENDANTS OF REUBEN AND [THE] DESCENDANTS OF GAD <OBJ.> THE JORDAN NOT [BELONGS] TO <THE> YOU A PORTION IN YAHWEH AND THEY WILL CAUSE TO CEASE DESCENDANTS YOUR <OBJ.> DESCENDANTS OUR TO NOT TO FEAR <OBJ.> YAHWEH
25 For the LORD has made the Jordan a border between us and you Reubenites and Gadites. You have no share in the LORD!’ So your descendants could cause ours to stop fearing the LORD.
26 AND WE SAID LET US ACT PLEASE FOR <THE> OURSELVES BY BUILDING <OBJ.> THE ALTAR NOT FOR BURNT OFFERING AND NOT FOR SACRIFICE
26 That is why we said, ‘Let us take action and build an altar for ourselves, but not for burnt offerings or sacrifices.
27 FOR [IS] A WITNESS IT BETWEEN US AND BETWEEN YOU AND BETWEEN GENERATIONS OUR AFTER US TO SERVE <OBJ.> [THE] SERVICE OF YAHWEH <TO> BEFORE HIM WITH BURNT OFFERINGS OUR AND WITH SACRIFICES OUR AND WITH PEACE OFFERINGS OUR AND NOT THEY WILL SAY DESCENDANTS YOUR TOMORROW TO DESCENDANTS OUR NOT [BELONGS] TO <THE> YOU A PORTION IN YAHWEH
27 Rather, let it be a witness between us and you and the generations to come, that we will worship the LORD in His presence with our burnt offerings, sacrifices, and peace offerings.’ Then in the future, your descendants cannot say to ours, ‘You have no share in the LORD!’
28 AND WE SAID AND IT WILL BE THAT THEY WILL SAY TO US AND TO GENERATIONS OUR TOMORROW AND WE WILL SAY SEE <OBJ.> [THE] COPY OF [THE] ALTAR OF YAHWEH WHICH THEY MADE ANCESTORS OUR NOT FOR BURNT OFFERING AND NOT FOR SACRIFICE FOR [IS] A WITNESS IT BETWEEN US AND BETWEEN YOU
28 Therefore we said, ‘If they ever say this to us or to our descendants, we will answer: Look at the replica of the altar of the LORD that our fathers made, not for burnt offerings or sacrifices, but as a witness between us and you.’
29 FAR BE IT TO <THE> US FROM US TO REBEL AGAINST YAHWEH AND TO TURN BACK THIS DAY FROM AFTER YAHWEH BY BUILDING AN ALTAR FOR BURNT OFFERING FOR GRAIN OFFERING AND FOR SACRIFICE <FROM> <TO> BESIDES [THE] ALTAR OF YAHWEH GOD OUR WHICH [IS] <TO> BEFORE TABERNACLE HIS
29 Far be it from us to rebel against the LORD and turn away from Him today by building an altar for burnt offerings, grain offerings, or sacrifices, other than the altar of the LORD our God, which stands before His tabernacle.”
30 AND HE HEARD PHINEHAS THE PRIEST AND [THE] LEADERS OF THE CONGREGATION AND [THE] HEADS OF [THE] FAMILIES OF ISRAEL WHO [WERE] WITH HIM <OBJ.> THE WORDS WHICH THEY SPOKE [THE] DESCENDANTS OF REUBEN AND [THE] DESCENDANTS OF GAD AND [THE] DESCENDANTS OF MANASSEH AND IT WAS GOOD IN VIEW THEIR
30 When Phinehas the priest and the chiefs of the congregation— the heads of Israel’s clans who were with him— heard what the descendants of Reuben, Gad, and Manasseh had to say, they were satisfied.
31 AND HE SAID PHINEHAS [THE] SON OF ELEAZAR THE PRIEST TO [THE] DESCENDANTS OF REUBEN AND TO [THE] DESCENDANTS OF GAD AND TO [THE] DESCENDANTS OF MANASSEH THIS DAY WE KNOW THAT [IS] AMONG MIDST OF US YAHWEH THAT NOT YOU HAVE ACTED UNFAITHFULLY AGAINST YAHWEH THE UNFAITHFULNESS <THE> THIS THEN YOU HAVE DELIVERED <OBJ.> [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL FROM [THE] HAND OF YAHWEH
31 Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest said to the descendants of Reuben, Gad, and Manasseh, “Today we know that the LORD is among us, because you have not committed this breach of faith against Him. Consequently, you have delivered the Israelites from the hand of the LORD.”
32 AND HE RETURNED PHINEHAS [THE] SON OF ELEAZAR THE PRIEST AND THE LEADERS FROM WITH [THE] DESCENDANTS OF REUBEN AND FROM WITH [THE] DESCENDANTS OF GAD FROM [THE] LAND OF <THE> GILEAD TO [THE] LAND OF CANAAN TO [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL AND THEY BROUGHT BACK WITH THEM WORD
32 Then Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest, together with the other leaders, returned to the Israelites in the land of Canaan and brought back a report regarding the Reubenites and Gadites in the land of Gilead.
33 AND IT WAS GOOD THE WORD IN [THE] EYES OF [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL AND THEY BLESSED GOD [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL AND NOT THEY SAID TO GO UP ON THEM FOR <THE> WAR TO DESTROY <OBJ.> THE LAND WHICH [THE] DESCENDANTS OF REUBEN AND [THE] DESCENDANTS OF GAD [WERE] DWELLING IN <THE> IT
33 The Israelites were satisfied with the report, and they blessed God and spoke no more about going to war against them to destroy the land where the Reubenites and Gadites lived.
34 AND THEY CALLED [THE] DESCENDANTS OF REUBEN AND [THE] DESCENDANTS OF GAD <TO> THE ALTAR FOR [IS] A WITNESS IT BETWEEN US THAT YAHWEH [IS] <THE> GOD
34 So the Reubenites and Gadites named the altar Witness, for they said, “It is a witness between us that the LORD is God.”
