9THESE THEY WERE [THE] CITIES OF <THE> APPOINTING FOR ALL [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL AND FOR THE SOJOURNER WHO SOJOURNS IN MIDST OF THEM TO FLEE THERE TOWARDS ANY [ONE WHO] STRIKES DOWN <OF> A PERSON BY INADVERTENCE AND NOT HE WILL DIE BY [THE] HAND OF [THE] AVENGER OF <THE> BLOOD UNTIL STANDS HE <TO> BEFORE THE CONGREGATION 9These are the cities appointed for all the Israelites and foreigners among them, so that anyone who kills a person unintentionally may flee there and not die by the hand of the avenger of blood prior to standing trial before the assembly.
1AND THEY APPROACHED [THE] LEADERS OF [THE] FATHERS OF THE LEVITES TO ELEAZAR THE PRIEST AND TO JOSHUA [THE] SON OF NUN AND TO [THE] LEADERS OF [THE] FATHERS OF THE TRIBES OF [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL Forty-Eight Cities for the Levites (Numbers 35:1–8; 1 Chronicles 6:54–81) 1Now the family heads of the Levites approached Eleazar the priest, Joshua son of Nun, and the heads of the other tribes of Israel
2AND THEY SPOKE TO THEM AT SHILOH IN [THE] LAND OF CANAAN <TO> SAYING YAHWEH HE COMMANDED BY [THE] HAND OF MOSES TO GIVE TO <THE> US CITIES TO DWELL IN AND PASTURE LANDS THEIR FOR LIVESTOCK OUR 2at Shiloh in the land of Canaan and said to them, “The LORD commanded through Moses that we be given cities in which to live, together with pasturelands for our livestock.”
3AND THEY GAVE [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL TO THE LEVITES SOME OF INHERITANCE THEIR TO [THE] MOUTH OF YAHWEH <OBJ.> THE CITIES <THE> THESE AND <OBJ.> PASTURE LANDS THEIR 3So by the command of the LORD the Israelites gave the Levites these cities and their pasturelands out of their own inheritance:
4AND IT CAME OUT THE LOT OF [THE] CLANS OF THE KOHATHITE[S] AND IT BELONGED TO [THE] DESCENDANTS OF AARON THE PRIEST OF THE LEVITES FROM [THE] TRIBE OF JUDAH AND FROM [THE] TRIBE OF THE SIMEONITE[S] AND FROM [THE] TRIBE OF BENJAMIN BY THE LOT CITIES THIR- TEEN 4The first lot came out for the Kohathite clans. The Levites who were descendants of Aaron the priest received thirteen cities by lot from the tribes of Judah, Simeon, and Benjamin.
5AND [BELONGED] TO [THE] DESCENDANTS OF KOHATH WHICH REMAINED FROM [THE] CLANS OF [THE] TRIBE OF EPHRAIM AND FROM [THE] TRIBE OF DAN AND FROM [THE] HALF OF [THE] TRIBE OF MANASSEH BY THE LOT CITIES TEN 5The remaining descendants of Kohath received ten cities by lot from the tribes of Ephraim, Dan, and the half-tribe of Manasseh.
6AND [BELONGED] TO [THE] DESCENDANTS OF GERSHON FROM [THE] CLANS OF [THE] TRIBE OF ISSACHAR AND FROM [THE] TRIBE OF ASHER AND FROM [THE] TRIBE OF NAPHTALI AND FROM [THE] HALF OF [THE] TRIBE OF MANASSEH IN <THE> BASHAN BY THE LOT CITIES THIR- TEEN 6The descendants of Gershon received thirteen cities by lot from the tribes of Issachar, Asher, Naphtali, and the half-tribe of Manasseh in Bashan.
7[AND BELONGED] TO [THE] DESCENDANTS OF MERARI TO CLANS THEIR FROM [THE] TRIBE OF REUBEN AND FROM [THE] TRIBE OF GAD AND FROM [THE] TRIBE OF ZEBULUN CITIES TWO [PLUS] TEN 7And the descendants of Merari received twelve cities from the tribes of Reuben, Gad, and Zebulun.
8AND THEY GAVE [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL TO THE LEVITES <OBJ.> THE CITIES <THE> THESE AND <OBJ.> PASTURE LANDS THEIR JUST AS HE HAD COMMANDED YAHWEH BY [THE] HAND OF MOSES BY THE LOT 8So the Israelites allotted to the Levites these cities, together with their pasturelands, as the LORD had commanded through Moses.
9AND THEY GAVE FROM [THE] TRIBE OF [THE] DESCENDANTS OF JUDAH AND FROM [THE] TRIBE OF [THE] DESCENDANTS OF SIMEON <OBJ.> THE CITIES <THE> THESE WHICH HE CALLED <OBJ.> THEM BY NAME 9From the tribes of Judah and Simeon they designated these cities by name
10AND IT BELONGED TO [THE] DESCENDANTS OF AARON ONE OF [THE] CLANS OF THE KOHATHITE[S] FROM [THE] DESCENDANTS OF LEVI FOR TO <THE> THEM IT BELONGED THE LOT FIRST 10to the descendants of Aaron from the Kohathite clans of the Levites, because the first lot fell to them:
11AND THEY GAVE TO <THE> THEM <OBJ.> KIRIATH ARBA [THE] FATHER OF <THE> ANAK THAT [IS] HEBRON IN [THE] HILL COUNTRY OF JUDAH AND <OBJ.> PASTURE LANDS ITS AROUND IT 11They gave them Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron), with its surrounding pasturelands, in the hill country of Judah. (Arba was the father of Anak.)
12AND <OBJ.> [THE] FIELD[S] OF THE CITY AND <OBJ.> VILLAGES ITS THEY GAVE TO CALEB [THE] SON OF JEPHUNNEH <IN> POSSESSION HIS 12But they had given the fields and villages around the city to Caleb son of Jephunneh as his possession.
13AND TO [THE] DESCENDANTS OF AARON THE PRIEST THEY GAVE <OBJ.> [THE] CITY OF <THE> REFUGE OF THE KILLER <OBJ.> HEBRON AND <OBJ.> PASTURE LANDS ITS AND <OBJ.> LIBNAH AND <OBJ.> PASTURE LANDS ITS 13So to the descendants of Aaron the priest they gave these cities, together with their pasturelands: Hebron, a city of refuge for the manslayer, Libnah
14AND <OBJ.> JATTIR AND <OBJ.> PASTURE LANDS ITS AND <OBJ.> ESHTEMOA AND <OBJ.> PASTURE LANDS ITS 14Jattir Eshtemoa
15AND <OBJ.> HOLON AND <OBJ.> PASTURE LANDS ITS AND <OBJ.> DEBIR AND <OBJ.> PASTURE LANDS ITS 15Holon Debir
16AND <OBJ.> AIN AND <OBJ.> PASTURE LANDS ITS AND <OBJ.> JUTTAH AND <OBJ.> PASTURE LANDS ITS <OBJ.> BETH SHEMESH AND <OBJ.> PASTURE LANDS ITS CITIES NINE FROM WITH [THE] TWO THE TRIBES <THE> THESE 16Ain Juttah and Beth-shemesh— nine cities from these two tribes, together with their pasturelands.
17AND FROM [THE] TRIBE OF BENJAMIN <OBJ.> GIBEON AND <OBJ.> PASTURE LANDS ITS <OBJ.> GEBA AND <OBJ.> PASTURE LANDS ITS 17And from the tribe of Benjamin they gave them Gibeon Geba
18<OBJ.> ANATHOTH AND <OBJ.> PASTURE LANDS ITS AND <OBJ.> ALMON AND <OBJ.> PASTURE LANDS ITS CITIES FOUR 18Anathoth and Almon— four cities, together with their pasturelands.
19ALL [THE] CITIES OF [THE] DESCENDANTS OF AARON THE PRIESTS [WERE] THIR- TEEN CITIES AND PASTURE LANDS THEIR 19In all, thirteen cities, together with their pasturelands, were given to the priests, the descendants of Aaron.
20AND TO [THE] CLANS OF [THE] DESCENDANTS OF KOHATH THE LEVITES WHO REMAINED OF [THE] DESCENDANTS OF KOHATH AND IT WAS [THE] CITIES OF LOT THEIR FROM [THE] TRIBE OF EPHRAIM 20The remaining Kohathite clans of the Levites were allotted these cities: From the tribe of Ephraim
21AND THEY GAVE TO <THE> THEM <OBJ.> [THE] CITY OF <THE> REFUGE OF THE KILLER <OBJ.> SHECHEM AND <OBJ.> PASTURE LANDS ITS IN [THE] HILL COUNTRY OF EPHRAIM AND <OBJ.> GEZER AND <OBJ.> PASTURE LANDS ITS 21they were given Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim (a city of refuge for the manslayer), Gezer,
22AND <OBJ.> KIBZAIM AND <OBJ.> PASTURE LANDS ITS AND <OBJ.> BETH HORON AND <OBJ.> PASTURE LANDS ITS CITIES FOUR 22Kibzaim and Beth-horon— four cities, together with their pasturelands.
23AND FROM [THE] TRIBE OF DAN <OBJ.> ELTEKEH AND <OBJ.> PASTURE LANDS ITS <OBJ.> GIBBETHON AND <OBJ.> PASTURE LANDS ITS 23From the tribe of Dan they were given Elteke Gibbethon
24<OBJ.> AIJALON AND <OBJ.> PASTURE LANDS ITS <OBJ.> GATH RIMMON AND <OBJ.> PASTURE LANDS ITS CITIES FOUR 24Aijalon and Gath-rimmon— four cities, together with their pasturelands.
25AND FROM [THE] HALF OF [THE] TRIBE OF MANASSEH <OBJ.> TAANACH AND <OBJ.> PASTURE LANDS ITS AND <OBJ.> GATH RIMMON AND <OBJ.> PASTURE LANDS ITS CITIES TWO 25And from the half-tribe of Manasseh they were given Taanach and Gath-rimmon— two cities, together with their pasturelands.
26ALL [THE] CITIES TEN AND PASTURE LANDS THEIR [BELONGED] TO [THE] CLANS OF [THE] DESCENDANTS OF KOHATH WHICH REMAINED 26In all, ten cities, together with their pasturelands, were given to the rest of the Kohathite clans.
27AND TO [THE] DESCENDANTS OF GERSHON FROM [THE] CLANS OF THE LEVITES FROM [THE] HALF OF [THE] TRIBE OF MANASSEH <OBJ.> [THE] CITY OF <THE> REFUGE OF THE KILLER <OBJ.> GOLAN IN <THE> BASHAN AND <OBJ.> PASTURE LANDS ITS AND <OBJ.> BEESHTARAH AND <OBJ.> PASTURE LANDS ITS CITIES TWO 27This is what the Levite clans of the Gershonites were given: From the half-tribe of Manasseh they were given Golan in Bashan, a city of refuge for the manslayer, and Beeshterah— two cities, together with their pasturelands.
28AND FROM [THE] TRIBE OF ISSACHAR <OBJ.> KISHION AND <OBJ.> PASTURE LANDS ITS <OBJ.> DABERATH AND <OBJ.> PASTURE LANDS ITS 28From the tribe of Issachar they were given Kishion Daberath

30AND FROM [THE] TRIBE OF ASHER <OBJ.> MISHAL AND <OBJ.> PASTURE LANDS ITS <OBJ.> ABDON AND <OBJ.> PASTURE LANDS ITS 30From the tribe of Asher they were given Mishal Abdon
31<OBJ.> HELKATH AND <OBJ.> PASTURE LANDS ITS AND <OBJ.> REHOB AND <OBJ.> PASTURE LANDS ITS CITIES FOUR 31Helkath and Rehob— four cities, together with their pasturelands.
32AND FROM [THE] TRIBE OF NAPHTALI <OBJ.> [THE] CITY OF <THE> REFUGE OF THE KILLER <OBJ.> KEDESH IN <THE> GALILEE AND <OBJ.> PASTURE LANDS ITS AND <OBJ.> HAMMOTH DOR AND <OBJ.> PASTURE LANDS ITS AND <OBJ.> KARTAN AND <OBJ.> PASTURE LANDS ITS CITIES THREE 32And from the tribe of Naphtali they were given Kedesh in Galilee (a city of refuge for the manslayer), Hammoth-dor and Kartan— three cities, together with their pasturelands.
33ALL [THE] CITIES OF THE GERSHONITE[S] TO CLANS THEIR [WERE] THIR- TEEN CITI[ES] AND PASTURE LANDS THEIR 33In all, thirteen cities, together with their pasturelands, were given to the Gershonite clans.
34AND TO [THE] CLANS OF [THE] DESCENDANTS OF MERARI THE LEVITES WHICH REMAINED FROM WITH [THE] TRIBE OF ZEBULUN <OBJ.> JOKNEAM AND <OBJ.> PASTURE LANDS ITS <OBJ.> KARTAH AND <OBJ.> PASTURE LANDS ITS 34This is what the Merarite clan (the rest of the Levites) were given: From the tribe of Zebulun they were given Jokneam Kartah
35<OBJ.> DIMNAH AND <OBJ.> PASTURE LANDS ITS <OBJ.> NAHALAL AND <OBJ.> PASTURE LANDS ITS CITIES FOUR 35Dimnah and Nahalal— four cities, together with their pasturelands.
36AND FROM [THE] TRIBE OF REUBEN <OBJ.> BEZER AND <OBJ.> PASTURE LANDS ITS AND <OBJ.> JAHAZ <TOWARDS> AND <OBJ.> PASTURE LANDS ITS 36From the tribe of Reuben they were given Bezer Jahaz

38AND FROM [THE] TRIBE OF GAD <OBJ.> [THE] CITY OF <THE> REFUGE OF THE KILLER <OBJ.> RAMOTH IN <THE> GILEAD AND <OBJ.> PASTURE LANDS ITS AND <OBJ.> MAHANAIM AND <OBJ.> PASTURE LANDS ITS 38And from the tribe of Gad they were given Ramoth in Gilead, a city of refuge for the manslayer, Mahanaim
39<OBJ.> HESHBON AND <OBJ.> PASTURE LANDS ITS <OBJ.> JAZER AND <OBJ.> PASTURE LANDS ITS ALL [THE] CITIES [WERE] FOUR 39Heshbon and Jazer— four cities in all, together with their pasturelands.
40ALL THE CITIES OF [THE] DESCENDANTS OF MERARI TO CLANS THEIR WHICH REMAINED OF [THE] CLANS OF THE LEVITES AND IT WAS LOT THEIR CITIES TWO [PLUS] TEN 40In all, twelve cities were allotted to the clans of Merari the remaining Levite clans.
41ALL [THE] CITIES OF THE LEVITES IN [THE] MIDST OF [THE] POSSESSION OF [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL [WERE] CITIES FORTY AND EIGHT AND PASTURE LANDS THEIR 41For the Levites, then, there were forty-eight cities in all, together with their pasturelands, within the territory of the Israelites.
42THEY WERE THE CITIES <THE> THESE A CITY A CITY AND PASTURE LANDS ITS AROUND IT THUS FOR ALL THE CITIES <THE> THESE 42Each of these cities had its own surrounding pasturelands; this was true for all the cities.
43AND HE GAVE YAHWEH TO ISRAEL <OBJ.> ALL THE LAND WHICH HE HAD SWORN TO GIVE TO ANCESTORS THEIR AND THEY TOOK POSSESSION OF IT AND THEY DWELT IN <THE> IT 43Thus the LORD gave Israel all the land He had sworn to give their fathers, and they took possession of it and settled in it.
44AND HE GAVE REST YAHWEH TO <THE> THEM FROM ROUND ABOUT ACCORDING TO ALL THAT HE HAD SWORN TO ANCESTORS THEIR AND NOT HE STOOD ANYONE IN FACES THEIR FROM ALL ENEMIES THEIR <OBJ.> ALL ENEMIES THEIR HE GAVE YAHWEH IN HAND THEIR 44And the LORD gave them rest on every side, just as He had sworn to their fathers. None of their enemies could stand against them, for the LORD delivered all their enemies into their hand.
45NOT IT FELL A WORD FROM EVERY <THE> WORD <THE> GOOD WHICH HE HAD SPOKEN YAHWEH TO [THE] HOUSE OF ISRAEL <THE> EVERYTHING IT CAME 45Not one of all the LORD’s good promises to the house of Israel had failed; everything was fulfilled.
