1 AND THEY ACTED UNFAITHFULLY [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL UNFAITHFULNESS IN THE DEVOTED THING[S] AND HE TOOK ACHAN [THE] SON OF CARMI [THE] SON OF ZABDI [THE] SON OF ZERAH OF [THE] TRIBE OF JUDAH SOME OF THE DEVOTED THING[S] AND IT BURNED [THE] ANGER OF YAHWEH ON [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL
The Defeat at Ai
1 The Israelites, however, acted unfaithfully regarding the things devoted to destruction. Achan son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, took some of what was set apart. So the anger of the LORD burned against the Israelites.
2 AND HE SENT JOSHUA MEN FROM JERICHO <THE> AI WHICH [IS] BESIDE BETH AVEN FROM [THE] EAST OF BETH- -EL AND HE SAID TO THEM <TO> SAYING GO UP AND SPY OUT <OBJ.> THE LAND AND THEY WENT UP THE MEN AND THEY SPIED OUT <OBJ.> <THE> AI
2 Meanwhile, Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is near Beth-aven to the east of Bethel, and told them, “Go up and spy out the land.” So the men went up and spied out Ai.
3 AND THEY RETURNED TO JOSHUA AND THEY SAID TO HIM MAY NOT IT GO UP ALL THE PEOPLE ABOUT TWO THOUSAND MAN OR ABOUT THREE THOUSAND<S> MAN LET THEM GO UP AND THEY MAY ATTACK <OBJ.> <THE> AI MAY NOT YOU MAKE GO WEARILY THERE TOWARDS <OBJ.> ALL THE PEOPLE FOR [ARE] FEW THEY
3 On returning to Joshua, they reported, “There is no need to send all the people; two or three thousand men are enough to go up and attack Ai. Since the people of Ai are so few, you need not wear out all our people there
4 AND THEY WENT UP SOME OF THE PEOPLE THERE <TOWARDS> ABOUT THREE THOUSAND<S> MAN AND THEY FLED <TO> BEFORE [THE] MEN OF <THE> AI
4 So about three thousand men went up, but they fled before the men of Ai.
5 AND THEY STRUCK DOWN OF <THE> THEM [THE] MEN OF <THE> AI ABOUT THIRTY AND SIX MAN AND THEY PURSUED THEM <TO> BEFORE THE GATE TO <THE> SHEBARIM AND THEY STRUCK DOWN THEM AT THE DESCENT AND IT MELTED [THE] HEART OF THE PEOPLE AND IT BECAME <INTO> WATER
5 And the men of Ai struck down about thirty-six of them, chasing them from the gate as far as the quarries and striking them down on the slopes. So the hearts of the people melted and became like water.
6 AND HE TORE JOSHUA CLOTHES HIS AND HE FELL ON FACE HIS [THE] GROUND TOWARDS <TO> BEFORE [THE] ARK OF YAHWEH UNTIL THE EVENING HE AND [THE] ELDERS OF ISRAEL AND THEY MADE GO UP DUST ON HEAD THEIR
6 Then Joshua tore his clothes and fell facedown before the ark of the LORD until evening, as did the elders of Israel; and they all sprinkled dust on their heads.
7 AND HE SAID JOSHUA ALAS! O LORD YAHWEH <TO> WHY? HAVE YOU BROUGHT OVER AT ALL <BROUGHT OVER> <OBJ.> THE PEOPLE <THE> THIS <OBJ.> THE JORDAN TO GIVE <OBJ.> US IN [THE] HAND OF THE AMORITE[S] TO DESTROY US AND IF WE HAD BEEN WILLING AND WE HAD REMAINED ON [THE] OTHER SIDE OF THE JORDAN
7 “O, Lord GOD,” Joshua said, “why did You ever bring this people across the Jordan to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites to be destroyed? If only we had been content to stay on the other side of the Jordan!
8 PARDON ME O LORD WHAT? WILL I SAY AFTER THAT IT HAS TURNED ISRAEL A NECK <TO> BEFORE ENEMIES ITS
8 O Lord, what can I say, now that Israel has turned its back and run from its enemies?
9 AND THEY MAY HEAR THE CANAANITE[S] AND ALL [THE] INHABITANTS OF THE LAND AND THEY WILL SURROUND <ON> US AND THEY WILL CUT OFF <OBJ.> NAME OUR FROM THE EARTH AND WHAT? WILL YOU DO FOR NAME YOUR <THE> GREAT
9 When the Canaanites and all who live in the land hear about this, they will surround us and wipe out our name from the earth. Then what will You do for Your great name?”
10 AND HE SAID YAHWEH TO JOSHUA STAND UP FOR <THE> YOURSELF <TO> WHY? THIS [ARE] YOU FALLING ON FACE YOUR
10 But the LORD said to Joshua, “Stand up Why have you fallen on your face?
11 IT HAS SINNED ISRAEL AND ALSO THEY HAVE TRANSGRESSED <OBJ.> COVENANT MY WHICH I COMMANDED <OBJ.> THEM AND ALSO THEY HAVE TAKEN SOME OF THE DEVOTED THING[S] AND ALSO THEY HAVE STOLEN AND ALSO THEY HAVE DECEIVED AND ALSO THEY HAVE PUT [THEM] AMONG THINGS THEIR
11 Israel has sinned; they have transgressed My covenant that I commanded them, and they have taken some of what was devoted to destruction. Indeed, they have stolen and lied, and they have put these things with their own possessions.
12 AND NOT THEY ARE ABLE [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL TO STAND <TO> BEFORE ENEMIES THEIR A NECK THEY TURN <TO> BEFORE ENEMIES THEIR FOR THEY HAVE BECOME <INTO> A DEVOTED THING NOT I WILL REPEAT TO BE WITH YOU IF NOT YOU WILL DESTROY THE DEVOTED THING[S] FROM MIDST YOUR
12 This is why the Israelites cannot stand against their enemies. They will turn their backs and run from their enemies, because they themselves have been set apart for destruction. I will no longer be with you unless you remove from among you whatever is devoted to destruction.
13 ARISE CONSECRATE <OBJ.> THE PEOPLE AND YOU WILL SAY CONSECRATE YOURSELVES FOR TOMORROW FOR THUS HE SAYS YAHWEH [THE] GOD OF ISRAEL DEVOTED THING[S] [ARE] IN MIDST YOUR O ISRAEL NOT YOU WILL BE ABLE TO STAND <TO> BEFORE ENEMIES YOUR UNTIL REMOVE YOU THE DEVOTED THING[S] FROM MIDST YOUR
13 Get up and consecrate the people, saying, ‘Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow, for this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Among you, O Israel, there are things devoted to destruction. You cannot stand against your enemies until you remove them.
14 AND YOU WILL BRING YOURSELVES NEAR IN THE MORNING TO TRIBES YOUR AND IT WILL BE THE TRIBE WHICH HE WILL TAKE IT YAHWEH IT WILL DRAW NEAR TO THE FAMILIES AND THE FAMILY WHICH HE WILL TAKE IT YAHWEH IT WILL DRAW NEAR TO THE HOUSEHOLDS AND THE HOUSEHOLD WHICH HE WILL TAKE IT YAHWEH IT WILL DRAW NEAR TO THE MEN
14 In the morning you must present yourselves tribe by tribe. The tribe that the LORD selects shall come forward clan by clan, and the clan that the LORD selects shall come forward family by family, and the family that the LORD selects shall come forward man by man.
15 AND IT WILL BE THE [ONE WHO] IS TAKEN BY LOT WITH THE DEVOTED THING[S] HE WILL BE BURNED WITH <THE> FIRE <OBJ.> HIM AND <OBJ.> ALL THAT [BELONGS] TO <THE> HIM FOR HE HAS TRANSGRESSED <OBJ.> COVENANT OF YAHWEH AND FOR HE HAS DONE DISGRACEFUL FOLLY IN ISRAEL
15 The one who is caught with the things devoted to destruction must be burned along with all that belongs to him, because he has transgressed the covenant of the LORD and committed an outrage in Israel.’”
16 AND HE ROSE EARLY JOSHUA IN THE MORNING AND HE BROUGHT NEAR <OBJ.> ISRAEL TO TRIBES ITS AND IT WAS TAKEN BY LOT [THE] TRIBE OF JUDAH
The Sin of Achan
16 So Joshua arose early the next morning and had Israel come forward tribe by tribe, and the tribe of Judah was selected.
17 AND HE BROUGHT NEAR <OBJ.> [THE] FAMILY OF JUDAH AND HE TOOK <OBJ.> [THE] FAMILY OF THE ZERAHITE[S] AND HE BROUGHT NEAR <OBJ.> [THE] FAMILY OF THE ZERAHITE[S] TO THE MEN AND HE WAS TAKEN BY LOT ZABDI
17 He had the clans of Judah come forward, and the clan of the Zerahites was selected. He had the clan of the Zerahites come forward, and the family of Zabdi was selected.
18 AND HE BROUGHT NEAR <OBJ.> HOUSEHOLD HIS TO THE MEN AND HE WAS TAKEN BY LOT ACHAN [THE] SON OF CARMI [THE] SON OF ZABDI [THE] SON OF ZERAH OF [THE] TRIBE OF JUDAH
18 And he had the family of Zabdi come forward man by man, and Achan son of Carmi, the son of Zabdi, the son of Zerah, of the tribe of Judah, was selected.
19 AND HE SAID JOSHUA TO ACHAN O SON MY PUT PLEASE GLORY TO YAHWEH [THE] GOD OF ISRAEL AND GIVE TO <THE> HIM CONFESSION AND TELL PLEASE TO <THE> ME WHAT? HAVE YOU DONE MAY NOT YOU HIDE [IT] FROM ME
19 So Joshua said to Achan, “My son, give glory to the LORD, the God of Israel, and make a confession to Him. I urge you to tell me what you have done; do not hide it from me.”
20 AND HE ANSWERED ACHAN <OBJ.> JOSHUA AND HE SAID TRULY I I HAVE SINNED TO YAHWEH [THE] GOD OF ISRAEL AND LIKE THIS AND LIKE THIS I HAVE DONE
20 “It is true,” Achan replied “I have sinned against the LORD, the God of Israel. This is what I did:
21 AND I SAW AMONG THE BOOTY <THE> CLOAK OF SHINAR ONE GOOD AND TWO HUNDRED SHEKELS SILVER AND A WEDGE OF GOLD ONE [WAS] FIFTY SHEKELS WEIGHT ITS AND I DESIRED THEM AND I TOOK THEM AND THERE THEY [ARE] HIDDEN IN THE GROUND IN [THE] MIDST OF <THE> TENT MY AND THE SILVER [IS] UNDER IT
21 When I saw among the spoils a beautiful cloak from Shinar, two hundred shekels of silver, and a bar of gold weighing fifty shekels, I coveted them and took them. They are hidden in the ground inside my tent, with the silver underneath.”
22 AND HE SENT JOSHUA MESSENGERS AND THEY RAN THE TENT TOWARDS AND THERE! [IT WAS] HIDDEN IN TENT HIS AND THE SILVER [WAS] UNDER IT
22 So Joshua sent messengers who ran to the tent, and there it all was, hidden in his tent, with the silver underneath.
23 AND THEY TOOK THEM FROM [THE] MIDST OF THE TENT AND THEY BROUGHT THEM TO JOSHUA AND TO ALL [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL AND THEY POURED OUT THEM <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH
23 They took the things from inside the tent, brought them to Joshua and all the Israelites, and spread them out before the LORD.
24 AND HE TOOK JOSHUA <OBJ.> ACHAN [THE] SON OF ZERAH AND <OBJ.> THE SILVER AND <OBJ.> THE CLOAK AND <OBJ.> [THE] WEDGE OF <THE> GOLD AND <OBJ.> SONS HIS AND <OBJ.> DAUGHTERS HIS AND <OBJ.> OX[EN] HIS AND <OBJ.> DONKEY[S] HIS AND <OBJ.> SHEEP HIS AND <OBJ.> TENT HIS AND <OBJ.> ALL THAT [BELONGED] TO <THE> HIM AND ALL ISRAEL WITH HIM AND THEY BROUGHT UP <OBJ.> THEM [THE] VALLEY OF ACHOR
24 Then Joshua, together with all Israel, took Achan son of Zerah, the silver, the cloak, the bar of gold, his sons and daughters, his oxen and donkeys and sheep, his tent, and everything else he owned and brought them to the Valley of Achor.
25 AND HE SAID JOSHUA WHY? HAVE YOU BROUGHT TROUBLE TO US HE WILL BRING TROUBLE TO YOU YAHWEH ON THE DAY <THE> THIS AND THEY STONED <OBJ.> HIM ALL ISRAEL STONE[S] AND THEY BURNED <OBJ.> THEM WITH <THE> FIRE AND THEY STONED <OBJ.> THEM WITH <THE> STONES
25 “Why have you brought this trouble upon us?” said Joshua. “Today the LORD will bring trouble upon you!” And all Israel stoned him to death. Then they stoned the others and burned their bodies.
26 AND THEY SET UP OVER HIM A HEAP OF STONES GREAT UNTIL THE DAY <THE> THIS AND HE TURNED BACK YAHWEH FROM [THE] BURNING OF ANGER HIS THERE- -FORE SOMEONE CALLED [THE] NAME OF THE PLACE <THE> THAT [THE] VALLEY OF ACHOR UNTIL THE DAY <THE> THIS
26 And they heaped over Achan a large pile of rocks that remains to this day. So the LORD turned from His burning anger. Therefore that place is called the Valley of Achor to this day.
