1JUDE OF JESUS CHRIST SERVANT, BROTHER THEN OF JAMES, TO THOSE IN GOD [THE] FATHER LOVED AND IN JESUS CHRIST KEPT CALLED; A Greeting from Jude (James 1:1) 1Jude, a servant of Jesus Christ and a brother of James, To those who are called, loved by God the Father, and kept in Jesus Christ:
3BELOVED, ALL DILIGENCE USING TO WRITE TO YOU CONCERNING <THE> SHARED OF US SALVATION, NECESSITY I HAD TO WRITE TO YOU EXHORTING [YOU] TO CONTEND EARNESTLY FOR THE ONCE FOR ALL HAVING BEEN DELIVERED TO THE SAINTS FAITH. God’s Judgment on the Ungodly (2 Peter 3:1–7) 3Beloved, although I made every effort to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt it necessary to write and urge you to contend earnestly for the faith entrusted once for all to the saints.
4CAME IN STEALTHILY FOR CERTAIN MEN, THOSE LONG AGO DESIGNATED UNTO THIS <THE> CONDEMNATION, UNGODLY [ONES], THE OF THE GOD OF US GRACE CHANGING INTO SENSUALITY AND THE ONLY MASTER GOD AND LORD OF US JESUS CHRIST DENYING. 4For certain men have crept in among you unnoticed— ungodly ones who were designated long ago for condemnation. They turn the grace of our God into a license for immorality, and they deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.
5TO REMIND NOW YOU I WANT, KNOWING YOU EVERYTHING, THAT <THE> LORD ONCE A PEOPLE OUT OF [THE] LAND OF EGYPT HAVING SAVED <THE> AFTERWARD THOSE NOT HAVING BELIEVED HE DESTROYED. 5Although you are fully aware of this, I want to remind you that after Jesus*NoteCloseNE, WH, BYZ, and TR the Lord had delivered His people out of the land of Egypt, He destroyed those who did not believe.
6[THE] ANGELS BOTH <THE> NOT HAVING KEPT <THE> THEIR OWN DOMAIN BUT HAVING LEFT <THE> [THEIR] OWN DWELLING, UNTO [THE] JUDGMENT OF [THE] GREAT DAY IN CHAINS ETERNAL UNDER DARKNESS HE HAS KEPT; 6And the angels who did not stay within their own domain but abandoned their proper dwelling— these He has kept in eternal chains under darkness, bound for judgment on that great day.
7JUST AS SODOM AND GOMORRAH AND THE AROUND THEM CITIES <THE> IN LIKE MANNER WITH THEM HAVING INDULGED IN SEXUAL IMMORALITY AND HAVING GONE AFTER FLESH STRANGE, ARE SET FORTH AS AN EXAMPLE OF FIRE ETERNAL [THE] PENALTY UNDERGOING. 7In like manner Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities around them, who indulged in sexual immorality and pursued strange flesh, are on display as an example of those who sustain the punishment of eternal fire.
8LIKEWISE YET ALSO THESE DREAMING [ONES] [THE] FLESH INDEED DEFILE, AUTHORITY HOWEVER THEY SET ASIDE, GLORIOUS [ONES] HOWEVER THEY BLASPHEME. 8Yet in the same way these dreamers defile their bodies, reject authority, and slander glorious beings.
9<THE> BUT MICHAEL THE ARCHANGEL, WHEN WITH THE DEVIL DISPUTING HE WAS REASONING ABOUT <THE> MOSES’ BODY, NOT DID DARE A JUDGMENT TO BRING AGAINST [HIM] BLASPHEMY BUT SAID; WOULD [THAT] HE REBUKE YOU [THE] LORD. 9But even the archangel Michael, when he disputed with the devil over the body of Moses, did not presume to bring a slanderous charge against him, but said, “The Lord rebuke you!”*NoteCloseThis account is attributed by Origen to the Testament of Moses, also called the Assumption of Moses.
10THESE HOWEVER AS MUCH AS INDEED NOT THEY UNDERSTOOD THEY DENIGRATE; AS MUCH AS HOWEVER NATURALLY AS THE IRRATIONAL ANIMALS THEY UNDERSTAND, IN THESE THINGS THEY CORRUPT THEMSELVES. 10These men, however, slander what they do not understand, and like irrational animals, they will be destroyed by the things they do instinctively.
11WOE TO THEM, BECAUSE IN THE WAY <THE> OF CAIN THEY WENT AND TO THE ERROR <THE> OF BALAAM FOR REWARD THEY RUSHED AND IN THE REBELLION <THE> OF KORAH THEY PERISHED. 11Woe to them! They have traveled the path of Cain; they have rushed for profit into the error of Balaam; they have perished in Korah’s rebellion.
12THESE ARE THE ONES IN THE LOVE FEASTS OF YOU HIDDEN REEFS, FEASTING TOGETHER [WITH YOU] FEARLESSLY THEMSELVES SHEPHERDING; CLOUDS WITHOUT WATER, BY WINDS BEING CARRIED AWAY, TREES AUTUMNAL WITHOUT FRUIT, TWICE HAVING DIED, HAVING BEEN UPROOTED; 12These men are hidden reefs*NoteCloseOr are blemishes in your love feasts, shamelessly feasting with you but shepherding only themselves. They are clouds without water, carried along by the wind; fruitless trees in autumn, twice dead after being uprooted.
13WAVES WILD OF [THE] SEA FOAMING OUT <THE> THEIR OWN SHAME, STARS WANDERING TO WHOM THE GLOOM <THE> OF DARKNESS TO THE AGE HAS BEEN RESERVED. 13They are wild waves of the sea, foaming up their own shame; wandering stars, for whom blackest darkness has been reserved forever.
14HE PROPHESIED THEN ALSO TO THESE [THE] SEVENTH FROM ADAM ENOCH SAYING: BEHOLD HAS COME [THE] LORD AMIDST HOLY [ONES] MYRIADS OF HIS 14Enoch, the seventh from Adam, also prophesied about them: “Behold, the Lord is coming with myriads of His holy ones
15TO CARRY OUT JUDGMENT AGAINST ALL AND TO CONVICT EVERY <THE> SOUL OF THEM CONCERNING ALL THE WORKS OF UNGODLINESS OF THEM IN WHICH THEY HAVE BEEN UNGODLY, AND CONCERNING ALL THE HARSH [THINGS] THAT SPOKE AGAINST HIM SINNERS UNGODLY. 15to execute judgment on everyone, and to convict all the ungodly of every. ungodly act of wickedness and every harsh word spoken against Him by ungodly sinners.”*NoteCloseSee the First Book of Enoch (1 Enoch 1:9).
16THESE ARE GRUMBLERS DISCONTENTED, AFTER THE LUSTS OF THEMSELVES FOLLOWING, AND THE MOUTH OF THEM SPEAKS GREAT SWELLING [WORDS], FLATTERING FACES OF PROFIT BECAUSE. 16These men are discontented grumblers, following after their own lusts; their mouths spew arrogance; they flatter others for their own advantage.
17YOU YOURSELVES HOWEVER BELOVED, DO REMEMBER THE DECLARATIONS WHICH SPOKEN BEFOREHAND BY THE APOSTLES OF THE LORD OF US JESUS CHRIST, A Call to Persevere (Hebrews 10:19–39; 2 Peter 3:1–7) 17But you, beloved, remember what was foretold by the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ
18FOR THEY WERE SAYING TO YOU THAT ON [THIS] LAST <THE> TIME THERE WILL BE SCOFFERS AFTER <THE> THEIR OWN PASSIONS FOLLOWING <THE> OF UNGODLINESSES. 18when they said to you, “In the last times there will be scoffers who will follow after their own ungodly desires.”*NoteCloseSee 2 Peter 3:3.
19THESE ARE THOSE CAUSING DIVISIONS, WORLDLY-MINDED, [THE] SPIRIT NOT HAVING. 19These are the ones who cause divisions, who are worldly and devoid of the Spirit.
20YOU YOURSELVES HOWEVER, BELOVED, BUILDING UP YOURSELVES IN THE MOST HOLY OF YOU FAITH IN [THE] SPIRIT HOLY PRAYING, 20But you, beloved, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit,
21YOURSELVES IN [THE] LOVE OF GOD DO KEEP, AWAITING THE MERCY OF THE LORD OF US JESUS CHRIST UNTO LIFE ETERNAL. 21keep yourselves in the love of God as you await the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you eternal life.
23OTHERS HOWEVER DO SAVE FROM THE FIRE SNATCHING, TO OTHERS THEN DO SHOW MERCY WITH FEAR, HATING EVEN THE BY THE FLESH STAINED CLOTHING. 23save others by snatching them from the fire; and to still others show mercy tempered with fear, hating even the clothing stained by the flesh.
24TO HIM NOW BEING ABLE TO KEEP YOU FROM STUMBLING AND TO PRESENT [YOU] IN THE PRESENCE OF THE GLORY OF HIM BLAMELESS WITH EXULTATION — Doxology (Romans 16:25–27) 24Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you unblemished in His glorious presence, with great joy—
25TO [THE] ONLY WISE GOD SAVIOR OF US, THROUGH JESUS CHRIST THE LORD OF US, [BE] GLORY AND MAJESTY DOMINION AND AUTHORITY BEFORE ALL THE AGE AND NOW AND TO ALL THE AGES, AMEN. 25to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority through Jesus Christ our Lord before all time, and now, and for all eternity.
