28SO ALSO <THE> CHRIST ONCE HAVING BEEN OFFERED IN ORDER <THE> OF MANY TO BEAR [THE] SINS FOR A SECOND TIME APART FROM SIN WILL APPEAR TO THOSE HIM AWAITING FOR SALVATION. 28so also Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many; and He will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who eagerly await Him.
1A SHADOW FOR HAVING THE LAW OF THE COMING GOOD THINGS, NOT THEMSELVES THE FORM OF THE THINGS, EACH YEAR WITH THE SAME SACRIFICES WHICH THEY OFFER TO THE CONTINUOUS NEVER IS ABLE THOSE DRAWING NEAR TO PERFECT; Christ’s Perfect Sacrifice (Psalm 40:1–17) 1For the law is only a shadow of the good things to come, not the realities themselves. It can never, by the same sacrifices offered year after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship.
2OTHERWISE NOT WOULD THEY HAVE CEASED BEING OFFERED BECAUSE OF <THE> NONE HAVING ANY LONGER CONSCIENCE OF SINS THOSE SERVING ONCE CLEANSED! 2If it could would not the offerings have ceased? For the worshipers would have been cleansed once for all, and would no longer have felt the guilt of their sins.
3BUT IN THESE [THERE IS] A REMINDER OF SINS EVERY YEAR; 3Instead, those sacrifices are an annual reminder of sins,
4IMPOSSIBLE [IT IS] INDEED [FOR THE] BLOOD OF BULLS AND OF GOATS TO TAKE AWAY SINS. 4because it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.
5THEREFORE COMING INTO THE WORLD HE SAYS: SACRIFICE AND OFFERING NOT YOU HAVE DESIRED, A BODY HOWEVER YOU HAVE PREPARED ME; 5Therefore, when Christ came into the world, He said: “Sacrifice and offering You did not desire, but a body You prepared for Me.
6BURNT OFFERINGS AND [OFFERINGS] FOR SIN NOT YOU HAVE DELIGHTED IN; 6In burnt offerings and sin offerings You took no delight.
7THEN I SAID; BEHOLD I HAVE COME — IN [THE] SCROLL OF [THE] BOOK IT HAS BEEN WRITTEN OF ME — <THE> TO DO, O GOD, THE WILL OF YOU. 7Then I said, ‘Here I am, it is written about Me in the scroll: I have come to do Your will, O God.’”*NoteClosePsalm 40:6–8 (see also LXX)
8ABOVE SAYING THAT SACRIFICES AND OFFERINGS AND BURNT OFFERINGS AND [OFFERINGS] FOR SIN NOT YOU HAVE DESIRED NOR YOU DELIGHTED IN, WHICH ACCORDING TO THE LAW ARE OFFERED, 8In the passage above He says “Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings You did not desire, nor did You delight in them” (although they are offered according to the law).
9THEN HE HAS SAID; BEHOLD I HAVE COME <THE> TO DO OF THE GOD THE WILL OF YOU. HE TAKES AWAY THE FIRST THAT THE SECOND HE MAY ESTABLISH; 9Then He adds, “Here I am, I have come to do Your will. ” He takes away the first to establish the second.
10BY THAT WILL SANCTIFIED WE ARE <THE> THROUGH THE OFFERING OF THE BODY <THE> OF JESUS CHRIST ONCE FOR ALL. 10And by that will, we have been sanctified through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
11AND EVERY INDEED PRIEST HAS STOOD EVERY DAY MINISTERING AND THE SAME REPEATEDLY OFFERING SACRIFICES, WHICH NEVER ARE ABLE TO TAKE AWAY SINS; 11Day after day every priest stands to minister and to offer again and again the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins.
12THIS [ONE] HOWEVER ONE FOR SINS HAVING OFFERED SACRIFICE IN <THE> PERPETUITY SAT DOWN AT [THE] RIGHT HAND <THE> OF GOD, 12But when this Priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, He sat down at the right hand of God.
13THE HENCEFORTH AWAITING UNTIL MAY BE PLACED THE ENEMIES OF HIM [AS] A FOOTSTOOL FOR THE FEET OF HIM. 13Since that time, He waits for His enemies to be made a footstool for His feet,
14BY ONE FOR OFFERING HE HAS PERFECTED FOR <THE> ALL TIME THOSE BEING SANCTIFIED. 14because by a single offering He has made perfect for all time those who are being sanctified.
15BEARS WITNESS NOW TO US ALSO THE SPIRIT <THE> HOLY; AFTER FOR <THE> TO HAVE SAID: 15The Holy Spirit also testifies to us about this. First He says:
16THIS [IS] THE COVENANT THAT I WILL MAKE WITH THEM AFTER THE DAYS THOSE, SAYS [THE] LORD, PUTTING [THE] LAWS OF MINE INTO [THE] HEARTS OF THEM AND INTO THE MIND OF THEM I WILL INSCRIBE THEM; 16“This is the covenant I will make with them after those days, declares the Lord. I will put My laws in their hearts and inscribe them on their minds.”*NoteCloseJeremiah 31:33
17AND THE SINS OF THEM AND THE LAWLESS ACTS OF THEM CERTAINLY NOT WILL I REMEMBER ANY MORE. 17Then He adds: “Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more.”*NoteCloseJeremiah 31:34
18WHERE NOW FORGIVENESS OF THESE [IS], NO LONGER AN OFFERING FOR SIN. 18And where these have been forgiven, an offering for sin is no longer needed.
19HAVING THEREFORE, BROTHERS, CONFIDENCE FOR THE ENTERING TO THE HOLY [PLACES] BY THE BLOOD OF JESUS, A Call to Persevere (Jude 1:17–23) 19Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place*NoteCloseOr the Holy Place by the blood of Jesus,
20WHICH HE DEDICATED FOR US A WAY NEW AND LIVING THROUGH THE VEIL, THAT IS THROUGH THE FLESH OF HIM, 20by the new and living way opened for us through the curtain of His body,*NoteCloseLiterally through the veil that is His flesh
21AND [HAVING] A PRIEST GREAT OVER THE HOUSE <THE> OF GOD, 21and since we have a great priest over the house of God,
22WE MAY DRAW NEAR WITH A SINCERE HEART IN FULL ASSURANCE OF FAITH SPRINKLED CLEAN <THE> [OUR] HEARTS FROM A CONSCIENCE EVIL AND HAVING OURSELVES WASHED <THE> [OUR] BODY WITH WATER PURE. 22let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.
23WE MAY HOLD FAST TO THE CONFESSION <THE> OF [OUR] HOPE FIRMLY, FAITHFUL FOR [IS] THE [ONE] HAVING PROMISED, 23Let us hold resolutely to the hope we profess, for He who promised is faithful.
24AND WE MAY THINK ONE ANOTHER TOWARD STIRRING UP TO LOVE AND TO GOOD WORKS 24And let us consider how to spur one another on to love and good deeds.
25NOT FORSAKING THE ASSEMBLING TOGETHER OF OURSELVES EVEN AS [IS THE] CUSTOM WITH SOME, BUT ENCOURAGING [ONE ANOTHER], AND SO MUCH MORE AS MUCH AS YOU SEE DRAWING NEAR THE DAY. 25Let us not neglect meeting together, as some have made a habit, but let us encourage one another, and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
26[IF] WILLINGLY FOR SIN WE AFTER [WE ARE] <THE> TO RECEIVE THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE TRUTH NO LONGER FOR SINS REMAINS A SACRIFICE, 26If we deliberately go on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no further sacrifice for sins remains,
27TERRIFYING HOWEVER A CERTAIN EXPECTATION OF JUDGMENT AND OF FIRE FURY TO DEVOUR BEING ABOUT THE ADVERSARIES. 27but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume all adversaries.
28HAVING SET ASIDE ANYONE [THE] LAW OF MOSES WITHOUT MERCIES ON THE BASIS OF TWO OR THREE WITNESSES HE DIES; 28Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses.
29HOW MUCH THINK YOU WORSE WILL HE DESERVE PUNISHMENT THE [ONE] THE SON <THE> OF GOD HAVING TRAMPLED UPON AND THE BLOOD OF THE COVENANT ORDINARY HAVING ESTEEMED BY WHICH HE WAS SANCTIFIED AND THE SPIRIT <THE> OF GRACE HAVING INSULTED? 29How much more severely do you think one deserves to be punished who has trampled on the Son of God, profaned the blood of the covenant that sanctified him, and insulted the Spirit of grace?
30WE KNOW FOR THE [ONE] HAVING SAID; MINE [IS] VENGEANCE, I MYSELF WILL REPAY SAYS LORD; AND AGAIN: WILL JUDGE [THE] LORD THE PEOPLE OF HIM. 30For we know Him who said, “Vengeance is Mine; I will repay,”*NoteCloseDeuteronomy 32:35 (see also LXX) and again, “The Lord will judge His people.”*NoteCloseDeuteronomy 32:36; Psalm 135:14
31[IT IS] A FEARFUL THING <THE> TO FALL INTO [THE] HANDS OF GOD [THE] LIVING. 31It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.
32DO REMEMBER HOWEVER THE FORMER DAYS IN WHICH HAVING BEEN ENLIGHTENED A GREAT CONFLICT YOU ENDURED OF SUFFERINGS, 32Remember the early days that you were in the light.*NoteCloseOr Remember when you were first enlightened. In those days, you endured a great conflict in the face of suffering.
33THIS INDEED BY REVILINGS BOTH AND BY TRIBULATIONS BEING MADE A SPECTACLE, THIS HOWEVER PARTNERS OF THOSE THUS PASSING THROUGH [THEM] HAVING BECOME; 33Sometimes you were publicly exposed to ridicule and persecution; at other times you were partners with those who were so treated.
34BOTH FOR WITH THE PRISONERS YOU SYMPATHIZED AND THE PLUNDERING OF THE POSSESSIONS OF YOU WITH JOY YOU ACCEPTED KNOWING TO HAVE IN YOURSELVES A BETTER POSSESSION IN HEAVENS AND ABIDING. 34You sympathized with those in prison and joyfully accepted the confiscation of your property, knowing that you yourselves had a better and permanent possession.
35NOT MAY THROW AWAY THEREFORE THE BOLDNESS OF YOU, WHICH HAS A GREAT REWARD. 35So do not throw away your confidence; it holds a great reward.
36OF ENDURANCE FOR YOU HAVE NEED, SO THAT THE WILL <THE> OF GOD HAVING DONE YOU MAY RECEIVE THE PROMISE. 36You need to persevere, so that after you have done the will of God, you will receive what He has promised.
37YET FOR A LITTLE VERY WHILE, THE [ONE] WHO IS COMING WILL COME AND NOT WILL DELAY. 37For, “In just a little while, He who is coming will come and will not delay.
38THE ONE HOWEVER RIGHTEOUS OF MINE BY FAITH WILL LIVE; AND IF HE SHALL SHRINK BACK, NOT TAKES PLEASURE THE SOUL OF MINE IN HIM. 38But My righteous one will live by faith;*NoteCloseBYZ and TR But the righteous will live by faith and if he shrinks back, I will take no pleasure in him.”*NoteCloseHabakkuk 2:3–4 (see also LXX)
39WE OURSELVES HOWEVER NOT ARE OF [THOSE] DRAWING BACK TO DESTRUCTION BUT OF FAITH TO [THE] PRESERVING [OF THE] SOUL. 39But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who have faith and preserve their souls.
