1 [THE] WORDS OF NEHEMIAH [THE] SON OF HACALIAH AND IT WAS IN [THE] MONTH OF KISLEV YEAR TWENTY AND I I WAS IN SUSA THE CITADEL
Nehemiah’s Prayer
(Deuteronomy 30:1–10 )
1 These are the words of Nehemiah son of Hacaliah:
In the month of Chislev, in the twentieth year, while I was in the citadel of Susa,
2 AND HE CAME HANANI ONE OF BROTHERS MY HE AND PEOPLE FROM JUDAH AND I ASKED THEM ABOUT THE JEWS THE ESCAPED REMNANT WHO THEY HAD SURVIVED FROM THE CAPTIVITY AND ON JERUSALEM
2 Hanani, one of my brothers, arrived with men from Judah. So I questioned them about the remnant of the Jews who had survived the exile, and also about Jerusalem.
3 AND THEY SAID TO ME THE SURVIVORS WHO THEY HAVE SURVIVED FROM THE CAPTIVITY THERE IN THE PROVINCE [ARE] IN TROUBLE GREAT AND IN DISGRACE AND [THE] WALL OF JERUSALEM [HAS BEEN] BROKEN DOWN AND GATES ITS THEY HAVE BEEN BURNED WITH <THE> FIRE
3 And they told me, “The remnant who survived the exile are there in the province, in great trouble and disgrace. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates have been burned with fire.”
4 AND IT WAS WHEN HEARD I <OBJ.> THE WORDS <THE> THESE I SAT DOWN AND I WEPT AND I MOURNED ! DAYS AND I WAS FASTING AND PRAYING <TO> BEFORE [THE] GOD OF THE HEAVENS
4 When I heard these words, I sat down and wept. I mourned for days, fasting and praying before the God of heaven.
5 AND I SAID I BEG YOU O YAHWEH [THE] GOD OF THE HEAVENS THE GOD <THE> GREAT AND <THE> AWESOME [WHO] KEEPS THE COVENANT AND COVENANT LOYALTY TO [THOSE WHO] LOVE HIM AND TO [THOSE WHO] KEEP <OF> COMMANDMENTS HIS
5 Then I said:
“O LORD, God of heaven, the great and awesome God who keeps His covenant of loving devotion with those who love Him and keep His commandments,
6 MAY IT BE PLEASE EAR YOUR ATTENTIVE AND EYES YOUR OPEN TO LISTEN TO [THE] PRAYER OF SERVANT YOUR WHICH I [AM] PRAYING <TO> BEFORE YOU THIS DAY BY DAY AND NIGHT ON [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL SERVANTS YOUR AND [AM] CONFESSING ON [THE] SINS OF [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL WHICH WE HAVE SINNED TO YOU AND I AND [THE] HOUSE OF FATHER MY WE HAVE SINNED
6 let Your eyes be open and Your ears attentive to hear the prayer that I, Your servant, now pray before You day and night for Your servants, the Israelites.
I confess the sins that we Israelites have committed against You. Both I and my father’s house have sinned.
7 SURELY <TO ACT CORRUPTLY> WE HAVE ACTED CORRUPTLY TO YOU AND NOT WE HAVE KEPT <OBJ.> THE COMMANDMENTS AND <OBJ.> THE STATUTES AND <OBJ.> THE JUDGMENTS WHICH YOU COMMANDED <OBJ.> MOSES SERVANT YOUR
7 We have behaved corruptly against You and have not kept the commandments, statutes, and ordinances that You gave Your servant Moses.
8 REMEMBER PLEASE <OBJ.> THE WORD WHICH YOU COMMANDED <OBJ.> MOSES SERVANT YOUR <TO> SAYING YOU YOU WILL ACT UNFAITHFULLY I I WILL SCATTER <OBJ.> YOU AMONG THE PEOPLES
8 Remember, I pray, the word that You commanded Your servant Moses when You said, ‘If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the nations,
9 AND YOU WILL TURN BACK TO ME AND YOU WILL KEEP COMMANDMENTS MY AND YOU WILL OBSERVE <OBJ.> THEM IF IT WILL BE BANISHED [ONE] YOUR AT [THE] END OF THE HEAVENS FROM THERE I WILL GATHER THEM AND I WILL BRING THEM TO THE PLACE WHERE I HAVE CHOSEN TO CAUSE TO DWELL <OBJ.> NAME MY THERE
9 but if you return to Me and keep and practice My commandments, then even if your exiles have been banished to the farthest horizon, I will gather them from there and bring them to the place I have chosen as a dwelling for My Name.’
10 AND THEY [ARE] SERVANTS YOUR AND PEOPLE YOUR WHOM YOU REDEEMED BY STRENGTH YOUR <THE> GREAT AND BY HAND YOUR <THE> MIGHTY
10 They are Your servants and Your people. You redeemed them by Your great power and mighty hand.
11 I BEG YOU O LORD MAY IT BE PLEASE EAR YOUR ATTENTIVE TO [THE] PRAYER OF SERVANT YOUR AND TO [THE] PRAYER OF SERVANTS YOUR <THE> DELIGHTING TO FEAR <OBJ.> NAME YOUR AND GRANT SUCCESS ! PLEASE TO SERVANT YOUR THIS DAY AND GIVE HIM <TO> COMPASSION<S> <TO> BEFORE THE MAN <THE> THIS AND I I WAS CUP BEARER OF THE KING
11 O Lord, may Your ear be attentive to my prayer and to the prayers of Your servants who delight to revere Your name. Give Your servant success this day, I pray, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man.”
(At that time I was the cupbearer to the king.)
