36AND WHEN RESTED IT HE SAID RETURN! O YAHWEH [THE] TEN THOUSANDS OF [THE] FAMILIES OF ISRAEL 36And when it came to rest, he would say: “Return, O LORD, to the countless thousands of Israel.”
1AND IT WAS THE PEOPLE LIKE [THOSE WHO] COMPLAIN TROUBLE IN [THE] EARS OF YAHWEH AND HE HEARD YAHWEH AND IT BURNED ANGER HIS AND IT BURNED AMONG <THE> THEM [THE] FIRE OF YAHWEH AND IT CONSUMED IN [THE] OUTSKIRT[S] OF THE CAMP The Complaints of the People 1Soon the people began to complain about their hardship in the hearing of the LORD, and when He heard them, His anger was kindled, and fire from the LORD blazed among them and consumed the outskirts of the camp.
2AND IT CRIED OUT THE PEOPLE TO MOSES AND HE PRAYED MOSES TO YAHWEH AND IT DIED OUT THE FIRE 2And the people cried out to Moses, and he prayed to the LORD, and the fire died down.
3AND SOMEONE CALLED [THE] NAME OF THE PLACE <THE> THAT TABERAH FOR IT HAD BURNED AMONG <THE> THEM [THE] FIRE OF YAHWEH 3So that place was called Taberah,*NoteCloseTaberah means burning. because the fire of the LORD had burned among them.
4AND THE RABBLE WHICH [WAS] IN MIDST ITS THEY CRAVED A CRAVING AND THEY RETURNED AND THEY WEPT ALSO [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL AND THEY SAID WHO? WILL HE CAUSE TO EAT US MEAT 4Meanwhile, the rabble among them had a strong craving for other food, and again the Israelites wept and said, “Who will feed us meat?
5WE REMEMBER <OBJ.> THE FISH WHICH WE ATE IN EGYPT FOR NOTHING <OBJ.> THE CUCUMBERS AND <OBJ.> THE WATERMELONS AND <OBJ.> THE LEEK[S] AND <OBJ.> THE ONIONS AND <OBJ.> THE GARLIC<S> 5We remember the fish we ate freely in Egypt, along with the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions, and garlic.
6AND NOW APPETITE OUR [IS] DRY THERE NOT [IS] ANYTHING EXCEPT [ARE] TO THE MANNA EYES OUR 6But now our appetite is gone; there is nothing to see but this manna!”
7AND THE MANNA [WAS] LIKE SEED OF CORIANDER IT AND APPEARANCE ITS [WAS] LIKE [THE] APPEARANCE OF <THE> BDELLIUM 7Now the manna resembled coriander seed, and its appearance was like that of gum resin.
8THEY WENT ABOUT THE PEOPLE AND THEY GATHERED AND THEY GROUND IN <THE> HAND-MILL OR THEY POUNDED IN <THE> MORTAR AND THEY BOILED IN <THE> POT AND THEY MADE <OBJ.> IT BREAD CAKES AND IT WAS TASTE ITS LIKE [THE] TASTE OF <THE> CAKE OF <THE> OIL 8The people walked around and gathered it, ground it on a handmill or crushed it in a mortar, then boiled it in a cooking pot or shaped it into cakes. It tasted like pastry baked with fine oil.
9AND WHEN CAME DOWN THE DEW ON THE CAMP NIGHT IT CAME DOWN THE MANNA WITH IT 9When the dew fell on the camp at night, the manna would fall with it.
10AND HE HEARD MOSES <OBJ.> THE PEOPLE WEEPING TO CLANS ITS EVERYONE TO [THE] ENTRANCE OF TENT HIS AND IT BURNED [THE] ANGER OF YAHWEH EXCEEDINGLY AND IN [THE] EYES OF MOSES [IT WAS] DISPLEASING The Complaint of Moses 10Then Moses heard the people of family after family weeping at the entrances to their tents, and the anger of the LORD was kindled greatly, and Moses was also displeased.
11AND HE SAID MOSES TO YAHWEH <TO> WHY? HAVE YOU DONE HARM TO SERVANT YOUR AND <TO> WHY? NOT HAVE I FOUND FAVOR IN VIEW YOUR TO PUT <OBJ.> [THE] BURDEN OF ALL THE PEOPLE <THE> THIS ON ME 11So Moses asked the LORD, “Why have You brought this trouble on Your servant? Why have I not found favor in Your sight, that You have laid upon me the burden of all these people?
12¿ I DID I CONCEIVE <OBJ.> ALL THE PEOPLE <THE> THIS OR? I DID I GIVE BIRTH TO IT THAT YOU WILL SAY TO ME CARRY IT IN BOSOM YOUR JUST AS HE CARRIES <THE> FOSTER-FATHER <OBJ.> THE SUCKLING-CHILD ON THE LAND WHICH YOU SWORE TO ANCESTORS ITS 12Did I conceive all these people? Did I give them birth, so that You should tell me, ‘Carry them in your bosom, as a nurse carries an infant,’ to the land that You swore to give their fathers?
13FROM WHERE? [BELONG] TO <THE> ME [WILL] MEAT TO GIVE [IT] TO ALL THE PEOPLE <THE> THIS FOR THEY ARE WEEPING TO ME <TO> SAYING GIVE! TO <THE> US MEAT SO LET US EAT 13Where can I get meat for all these people? For they keep crying out to me, ‘Give us meat to eat!’
14NOT I AM ABLE I TO ALONE ME TO CARRY <OBJ.> ALL THE PEOPLE <THE> THIS FOR [IT IS TOO] HEAVY FOR ME 14I cannot carry all these people by myself; it is too burdensome for me.
15AND IF THUS YOU [ARE] DOING TO <THE> ME KILL ME PLEASE COMPLETELY <TO KILL> IF I HAVE FOUND FAVOR IN VIEW YOUR AND MAY NOT I LOOK ON DISTRESS MY 15If this is how You are going to treat me, please kill me right now if I have found favor in Your eyes— and let me not see my own wretchedness.”
16AND HE SAID YAHWEH TO MOSES GATHER! TO <THE> ME SEVENTY MAN FROM [THE] ELDERS OF ISRAEL WHOM YOU KNOW THAT THEY [ARE] [THE] ELDERS OF THE PEOPLE AND OFFICIALS ITS AND YOU WILL TAKE <OBJ.> THEM TO [THE] TENT OF MEETING AND THEY WILL PRESENT THEMSELVES THERE WITH YOU Seventy Elders Anointed 16Then the LORD said to Moses, “Bring Me seventy of the elders of Israel known to you as leaders and officers of the people. Bring them to the Tent of Meeting and have them stand there with you.
17AND I WILL COME DOWN AND I WILL SPEAK WITH YOU THERE AND I WILL SHARE SOME OF THE SPIRIT WHICH [IS] ON YOU AND I WILL PUT [IT] ON THEM AND THEY WILL CARRY WITH YOU IN [THE] BURDEN OF THE PEOPLE AND NOT YOU WILL CARRY [IT] YOU TO ALONE YOU 17And I will come down and speak with you there, and I will take some of the Spirit that is on you and put that Spirit on them. They will help you bear the burden of the people, so that you do not have to bear it by yourself.
18AND TO THE PEOPLE YOU WILL SAY SANCTIFY YOURSELVES FOR TOMORROW AND YOU WILL EAT MEAT FOR YOU HAVE WEPT IN [THE] EARS OF YAHWEH <TO> SAYING WHO? WILL HE CAUSE TO EAT US MEAT FOR IT WAS GOOD FOR <THE> US IN EGYPT AND HE WILL GIVE YAHWEH TO <THE> YOU MEAT AND YOU WILL EAT 18And say to the people: Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow, and you will eat meat, because you have cried out in the hearing of the LORD, saying: ‘Who will feed us meat? For we were better off in Egypt!’ Therefore the LORD will give you meat, and you will eat.
19NOT A DAY ONE YOU WILL EAT! AND NOT TWO DAYS AND NOT FIVE DAYS AND NOT TEN DAYS AND NOT TWENTY DAY[S] 19You will eat it not for one or two days, nor for five or ten or twenty days,
20UNTIL A MONTH OF DAYS UNTIL THAT IT WILL COME OUT FROM NOSE YOUR AND IT WILL BECOME FOR <THE> YOU <INTO> A LOATHSOME THING BECAUSE FOR YOU HAVE REJECTED <OBJ.> YAHWEH WHO [IS] IN MIDST YOUR AND YOU HAVE WEPT <TO> BEFORE HIM <TO> SAYING <TO> WHY? THIS DID WE COME OUT FROM EGYPT 20but for a whole month until it comes out of your nostrils and makes you nauseous— because you have rejected the LORD, who is among you, and have cried out before Him, saying, ‘Why did we ever leave Egypt?’”
21AND HE SAID MOSES [ARE] SIX HUNDRED<S> THOUSAND FOOT SOLDIER[S] THE PEOPLE WHICH I [AM] IN MIDST ITS AND YOU YOU HAVE SAID MEAT I WILL GIVE TO <THE> THEM AND THEY WILL EAT A MONTH OF DAYS 21But Moses replied, “Here I am among 600,000. men on foot, yet You say, ‘I will give them meat, and they will eat for a month
22¿ A FLOCK AND A HERD WILL IT BE SLAUGHTERED FOR <THE> THEM AND SOMEONE WILL FIND FOR <THE> THEM OR? <OBJ.> ALL [THE] FISH OF THE SEA WILL IT BE GATHERED FOR <THE> THEM AND SOMEONE WILL FIND FOR <THE> THEM 22If all our flocks and herds were slaughtered for them, would they have enough Or if all the fish in the sea were caught for them, would they have enough
23AND HE SAID YAHWEH TO MOSES ¿ [THE] HAND OF YAHWEH IS IT SHORT NOW YOU WILL SEE ¿ WILL IT HAPPEN TO YOU WORD MY OR? NOT 23The LORD answered Moses, “Is the LORD’s arm too short? Now you will see whether or not My word will come to pass.”
24AND HE WENT OUT MOSES AND HE SPOKE TO THE PEOPLE <OBJ.> [THE] WORDS OF YAHWEH AND HE GATHERED SEVENTY MAN FROM [THE] ELDERS OF THE PEOPLE AND HE STATIONED <OBJ.> THEM AROUND THE TENT 24So Moses went out and relayed to the people the words of the LORD, and he gathered seventy of the elders of the people and had them stand around the tent.
25AND HE CAME DOWN YAHWEH IN THE CLOUD AND HE SPOKE TO HIM AND HE SHARED SOME OF THE SPIRIT WHICH [WAS] ON HIM AND HE PUT [IT] ON SEVENTY MAN THE ELDERS AND IT WAS WHEN RESTED ON THEM THE SPIRIT AND THEY PROPHESIED AND NOT THEY REPEATED 25Then the LORD came down in the cloud and spoke to him, and He took some of the Spirit that was on Moses and placed that Spirit on the seventy elders. As the Spirit rested on them, they prophesied— but they never did so again.
26AND THEY HAD REMAINED TWO MEN IN THE CAMP [THE] NAME OF THE ONE [WAS] ELDAD AND [THE] NAME OF THE SECOND [WAS] MEDAD AND IT RESTED ON THEM THE SPIRIT AND THEY AMONG THOSE WRITTEN AND NOT THEY HAD GONE OUT THE TENT TOWARDS AND THEY PROPHESIED IN THE CAMP 26Two men, however, had remained in the camp— one named Eldad and the other Medad— and the Spirit rested on them. They were among those listed, but they had not gone out to the tent, and they prophesied in the camp.
27AND HE RAN THE YOUNG MAN AND HE TOLD TO MOSES AND HE SAID ELDAD AND MEDAD [ARE] PROPHESYING IN THE CAMP 27A young man ran and reported to Moses, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.”
28AND HE ANSWERED JOSHUA [THE] SON OF NUN [THE] SERVANT OF MOSES FROM YOUTH<S> HIS AND HE SAID O LORD MY MOSES RESTRAIN THEM 28Joshua son of Nun, the attendant to Moses since youth, spoke up and said, “Moses, my lord, stop them!”
29AND HE SAID TO <THE> HIM MOSES ¿ ZEALOUS [ARE] YOU FOR <THE> ME AND WHO? WILL HE GIVE ALL [THE] PEOPLE OF YAHWEH [WERE] PROPHETS THAT HE WILL PUT YAHWEH <OBJ.> SPIRIT HIS ON THEM 29But Moses replied “Are you jealous on my account? I wish that all the LORD’s people were prophets and that the LORD would place His Spirit on them!”
30AND HE GATHERED HIMSELF MOSES TO THE CAMP HE AND [THE] ELDERS OF ISRAEL 30Then Moses returned to the camp, along with the elders of Israel.
31AND A WIND IT SET OUT FROM WITH YAHWEH AND IT BROUGHT QUAILS FROM THE SEA AND IT LEFT [THEM] AT THE CAMP ABOUT A JOURNEY OF A DAY THUS AND ABOUT A JOURNEY OF A DAY THUS AROUND THE CAMP AND ABOUT TWO CUBITS ABOVE [THE] SURFACE OF THE GROUND The Quail and the Plague 31Now a wind sent by the LORD came up, drove in quail from the sea, and brought them near the camp, about two cubits above the surface of the ground,*NoteCloseOr up to two cubits deep; that is, approximately 3 feet or 91.4 centimeters for a day’s journey in every direction around the camp.
32AND IT AROSE THE PEOPLE ALL THE DAY <THE> THAT AND ALL THE NIGHT AND ALL [THE] DAY OF THE NEXT DAY AND THEY GATHERED <OBJ.> THE QUAIL THE [ONE WHO] DID LITTLE HE GATHERED TEN HOMERS AND THEY SPREAD [THEM] OUT FOR <THE> THEMSELVES COMPLETELY <TO SPREAD OUT> AROUND THE CAMP 32All that day and night, and all the next day, the people stayed up gathering the quail. No one gathered less than ten homers,*NoteClose10 homers is approximately 62.4 bushels or 2,200 liters. and they spread them out all around the camp.
33THE MEAT STILL IT [WAS] BETWEEN TEETH THEIR NOT YET IT WAS CHEWED AND [THE] ANGER OF YAHWEH IT BURNED ON THE PEOPLE AND HE STRUCK YAHWEH <ON> THE PEOPLE A PLAGUE GREAT VERY 33But while the meat was still between their teeth, before it was chewed, the anger of the LORD burned against the people, and the LORD struck them with a severe plague.
34AND SOMEONE CALLED <OBJ.> [THE] NAME OF THE PLACE <THE> THAT KIBROTH HATTAAVAH FOR THERE THEY BURIED <OBJ.> THE PEOPLE WHO CRAVED 34So they called that place Kibroth-hattaavah,*NoteCloseKibroth-hattaavah means graves of craving. because there they buried the people who had craved other food.
35FROM KIBROTH HATTAAVAH THEY SET OUT THE PEOPLE HAZEROTH AND THEY WERE AT HAZEROTH 35From Kibroth-hattaavah the people moved on to Hazeroth, where they remained for some time.
