41I [AM] YAHWEH GOD YOUR WHO I BROUGHT OUT <OBJ.> YOU FROM [THE] LAND OF EGYPT TO BECOME FOR <THE> YOU <INTO> GOD I [AM] YAHWEH GOD YOUR 41I am the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt to be your God. I am the LORD your God.”
1AND HE TOOK KORAH [THE] SON OF IZHAR [THE] SON OF KOHATH [THE] SON OF LEVI AND DATHAN AND ABIRAM [THE] SONS OF ELIAB AND ON [THE] SON OF PELETH [THE] SONS OF REUBEN Korah’s Rebellion 1Now Korah son of Izhar, the son of Kohath son of Levi, along with some Reubenites— Dathan and Abiram, sons of Eliab, and On son of Peleth— conducted
2AND THEY ROSE UP <TO> BEFORE MOSES AND MEN FROM [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL FIFTY AND TWO HUNDRED LEADERS OF [THE] CONGREGATION CALLED OF [THE] APPOINTED MEETING MEN OF NAME 2a rebellion against Moses, along with 250 men of Israel renowned as leaders of the congregation and representatives in the assembly.
3AND THEY ASSEMBLED ON MOSES AND ON AARON AND THEY SAID TO THEM ENOUGH FOR <THE> YOU THAT ALL THE CONGREGATION ALL OF THEM [ARE] HOLY AND [IS] AMONG MIDST OF THEM YAHWEH AND WHY? DO YOU EXALT YOURSELVES OVER [THE] ASSEMBLY OF YAHWEH 3They came together against Moses and Aaron and told them, “You have taken too much upon yourselves!*NoteCloseFiguratively You have gone too far or You have appropriated too much authority to yourselves; similarly in verse 7 For everyone in the entire congregation is holy, and the LORD is in their midst. Why then do you exalt yourselves above the assembly of the LORD?”
5AND HE SPOKE TO KORAH AND TO ALL COMPANY HIS <TO> SAYING MORNING AND HE WILL MAKE KNOWN YAHWEH <OBJ.> [THE ONE] WHO [BELONGS] TO <THE> HIM AND <OBJ.> THE HOLY [PERSON] AND HE WILL BRING [HIM] NEAR TO HIMSELF AND <OBJ.> [THE ONE] WHOM HE WILL CHOOSE <IN> <THE> HIM HE WILL BRING NEAR TO HIMSELF 5Then he said to Korah and all his followers, “Tomorrow morning the LORD will reveal who belongs to Him*NoteCloseLXX God has visited and knows those who are His; cited in 2 Timothy 2:19 and who is holy, and He will bring that person near to Himself. The one He chooses He will bring near to Himself.
6THIS DO TAKE FOR <THE> YOURSELVES CENSERS O KORAH AND ALL COMPANY HIS 6You, Korah, and all your followers are to do as follows: Take censers,
7AND PUT IN <THE> THEM FIRE AND SET ON THEM INCENSE <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH TOMORROW AND IT WILL BE THE MAN WHOM HE WILL CHOOSE YAHWEH HE [WILL BE] THE HOLY [PERSON] ENOUGH FOR <THE> YOU O DESCENDANTS OF LEVI 7and tomorrow you are to place fire and incense in them in the presence of the LORD. Then the man the LORD chooses will be the one who is holy. It is you sons of Levi who have taken too much upon yourselves!”
8AND HE SAID MOSES TO KORAH LISTEN PLEASE O DESCENDANTS OF LEVI 8Moses also said to Korah, “Now listen, you sons of Levi!
9¿ [IS IT TOO] SMALL FOR YOU THAT HE HAS SET APART [THE] GOD OF ISRAEL <OBJ.> YOU FROM [THE] CONGREGATION OF ISRAEL TO BRING NEAR <OBJ.> YOU TO HIMSELF TO SERVE <OBJ.> [THE] SERVICE OF [THE] TABERNACLE OF YAHWEH AND TO STAND <TO> BEFORE THE CONGREGATION TO SERVE THEM 9Is it not enough for you that the God of Israel has separated you from the congregation of Israel and brought you near to Himself to perform the work at the LORD’s tabernacle, and to stand before the congregation to minister to them?
10AND HE HAS BROUGHT NEAR <OBJ.> YOU AND <OBJ.> ALL BROTHERS YOUR [THE] DESCENDANTS OF LEVI WITH YOU BUT YOU SEEK ALSO PRIESTHOOD 10He has brought you near, you and all your fellow Levites, but you are seeking the priesthood as well.
11<TO> THEREFORE YOU AND ALL COMPANY YOUR [ARE] THE [ONES WHO] HAVE GATHERED ON YAHWEH AND AARON WHAT? [IS] HE THAT YOU WILL CAUSE TO GRUMBLE ON HIM 11Therefore, it is you and all your followers who have conspired against the LORD! As for Aaron, who is he that you should grumble against him?”
12AND HE SENT MOSES TO SUMMON <TO> DATHAN AND <TO> ABIRAM [THE] SONS OF ELIAB AND THEY SAID NOT WE WILL COME UP 12Then Moses summoned Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, but they said, “We will not come!
13¿ [IS IT] SMALL THAT YOU HAVE BROUGHT UP US FROM A LAND FLOWING OF MILK AND HONEY TO KILL US IN THE WILDERNESS THAT YOU WILL MAKE YOURSELF RULER OVER US ALSO REALLY <MAKE YOURSELF RULER> 13Is it not enough that you have brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey to kill us in the wilderness? Must you also appoint yourself as ruler over us?
14ALSO NOT INTO A LAND FLOWING OF MILK AND HONEY YOU HAVE BROUGHT US AND YOU HAVE GIVEN TO <THE> US AN INHERITANCE OF FIELD AND VINEYARD ¿ [THE] EYES OF THE MEN <THE> THOSE WILL YOU PUT OUT NOT WE WILL COME UP 14Moreover, you have not brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey or given us an inheritance of fields and vineyards. Will you gouge out the eyes of these men? No, we will not come!”
15AND IT BURNED TO MOSES EXCEEDINGLY AND HE SAID TO YAHWEH MAY NOT YOU TURN TO OFFERING THEIR NOT A DONKEY ONE FROM <THE> THEM I HAVE TAKEN AND NOT I HAVE DONE HARM TO <OBJ.> ONE OF <THE> THEM 15Then Moses became very angry and said to the LORD, “Do not regard their offering. I have not taken one donkey from them or mistreated a single one of them.”
16AND HE SAID MOSES TO KORAH YOU AND ALL COMPANY YOUR BE <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH YOU AND THEY AND AARON TOMORROW 16And Moses said to Korah, “You and all your followers are to appear before the LORD tomorrow— you and they and Aaron.
17AND TAKE EACH ONE CENSER HIS AND YOU WILL PUT ON THEM INCENSE AND YOU WILL BRING NEAR <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH EACH ONE CENSER HIS FIFTY AND TWO HUNDRED CENSERS AND YOU AND AARON EACH ONE CENSER HIS 17Each man is to take his censer, place incense in it, and present it before the LORD— 250 censers. You and Aaron are to present your censers as well.”
18AND THEY TOOK EACH ONE CENSER HIS AND THEY PUT ON THEM FIRE AND THEY SET ON THEM INCENSE AND THEY STOOD [THE] ENTRANCE OF [THE] TENT OF MEETING AND MOSES AND AARON 18So each man took his censer, put fire and incense in it, and stood with Moses and Aaron at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.
19AND HE CALLED TOGETHER ON THEM KORAH <OBJ.> ALL THE CONGREGATION TO [THE] ENTRANCE OF [THE] TENT OF MEETING AND IT APPEARED [THE] GLORY OF YAHWEH TO ALL THE CONGREGATION 19When Korah had gathered his whole assembly against them at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, the glory of the LORD appeared to the whole congregation.
21SEPARATE YOURSELVES FROM AMONG THE CONGREGATION <THE> THIS SO I MAY CONSUME <OBJ.> THEM LIKE A MOMENT 21“Separate yourselves from this congregation so that I may consume them in an instant.”
22AND THEY FELL ON FACES THEIR AND THEY SAID O GOD [THE] GOD OF THE SPIRITS OF ALL FLESH ¿ A MAN ONE WILL HE SIN AND TOWARDS ALL THE CONGREGATION WILL YOU BE ANGRY? 22But Moses and Aaron fell facedown and said, “O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, when one man sins, will You be angry with the whole congregation?”
24SPEAK TO THE CONGREGATION <TO> SAYING TAKE YOURSELVES UP FROM ROUND ABOUT <TO> [THE] DWELLING PLACE OF KORAH DATHAN AND ABIRAM 24“Tell the congregation to move away from the dwellings of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.”
25AND HE AROSE MOSES AND HE WENT TO DATHAN AND ABIRAM AND THEY WENT AFTER HIM [THE] ELDERS OF ISRAEL 25So Moses got up and went to Dathan and Abiram, and the elders of Israel followed him.
26AND HE SPOKE TO THE CONGREGATION <TO> SAYING TURN AWAY PLEASE FROM AT [THE] TENTS OF THE MEN <THE> WICKED <THE> THESE AND MAY NOT YOU TOUCH <IN> ALL THAT [BELONGS] TO <THE> THEM LEST YOU SHOULD BE SWEPT AWAY WITH ALL SINS THEIR 26And he warned the congregation, “Move away now from the tents of these wicked men. Do not touch anything that belongs to them, or you will be swept away because of all their sins.”
27AND THEY TOOK THEMSELVES UP FROM AT [THE] DWELLING PLACE OF KORAH DATHAN AND ABIRAM FROM ALL AROUND AND DATHAN AND ABIRAM THEY CAME OUT STANDING [THE] ENTRANCE OF TENTS THEIR AND WIVES THEIR AND SONS THEIR AND LITTLE ONE[S] THEIR 27So they moved away from the dwellings of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. Meanwhile, Dathan and Abiram had come out and stood at the entrances to their tents with their wives and children and infants.
28AND HE SAID MOSES BY THIS YOU WILL KNOW! THAT YAHWEH HE HAS SENT ME TO DO <OBJ.> ALL THE WORKS <THE> THESE FOR NOT FROM OWN HEART MY The Earth Swallows Korah 28Then Moses said, “This is how you will know that the LORD has sent me to do all these things, for it was not my own doing:
29IF LIKE [THE] DEATH OF EVERY <THE> HUMAN THEY WILL DIE! THESE [MEN] AND [THE] VISITATION OF EVERY <THE> HUMAN IT WILL BE VISITED ON THEM NOT YAHWEH HE HAS SENT ME 29If these men die a natural death or if they suffer the fate of all men, then the LORD has not sent me.
30AND IF A CREATION HE WILL CREATE YAHWEH AND IT WILL OPEN THE GROUND <OBJ.> MOUTH ITS AND IT WILL SWALLOW <OBJ.> THEM AND <OBJ.> ALL THAT [BELONGS] TO <THE> THEM AND THEY WILL GO DOWN ALIVE SHEOL TOWARDS AND YOU WILL KNOW THAT THEY HAVE SPURNED THE MEN <THE> THESE <OBJ.> YAHWEH 30But if the LORD brings about something unprecedented, and the earth opens its mouth and swallows them and all that belongs to them so that they go down alive into Sheol, then you will know that these men have treated the LORD with contempt.”
31AND IT WAS WHEN FINISHED HE TO SPEAK <OBJ.> ALL THE WORDS <THE> THESE AND IT WAS SPLIT OPEN THE GROUND WHICH [WAS] UNDER THEM 31As soon as Moses had finished saying all this, the ground beneath them split open,
32AND IT OPENED THE EARTH <OBJ.> MOUTH ITS AND IT SWALLOWED <OBJ.> THEM AND <OBJ.> HOUSEHOLDS THEIR AND <OBJ.> EVERY <THE> PERSON WHO [BELONGED] TO KORAH AND <OBJ.> ALL THE PROPERTY 32and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them and their households— all Korah’s men and all their possessions.
33AND THEY WENT DOWN THEY AND ALL THAT [BELONGED] TO <THE> THEM ALIVE SHEOL TOWARDS AND IT COVERED OVER THEM THE EARTH AND THEY PERISHED FROM AMONG THE ASSEMBLY 33They went down alive into Sheol with all they owned The earth closed over them, and they vanished from the assembly.
34AND ALL ISRAEL WHICH [WAS] AROUND THEM THEY FLED TO VOICE THEIR FOR THEY SAID LEST IT SHOULD SWALLOW US THE EARTH 34At their cries, all the people of Israel who were around them fled, saying, “The earth may swallow us too!”
35AND FIRE IT CAME FORTH FROM WITH YAHWEH AND IT CONSUMED <OBJ.> THE FIFTY AND TWO HUNDRED MAN [WHO] WERE BRINGING NEAR <OF> THE INCENSE 35And fire came forth from the LORD and consumed the 250 men who were offering the incense.
36AND HE SPOKE YAHWEH TO MOSES <TO> SAYING The Censers Reserved for Holy Use 36Then the LORD said to Moses,
37SPEAK TO ELEAZAR [THE] SON OF AARON THE PRIEST SO MAY HE TAKE UP <OBJ.> THE CENSERS FROM BETWEEN THE BURNING AND <OBJ.> THE FIRE SCATTER BEYOND FOR THEY ARE HOLY 37“Tell Eleazar son of Aaron the priest to remove the censers from the flames and to scatter the coals far away, because the censers are holy.
38<OBJ.> [THE] CENSERS OF THE SINNERS <THE> THESE BY LIVES THEIR AND PEOPLE WILL MAKE <OBJ.> THEM BEATEN OUT OF THIN PLATES OVERLAY FOR THE ALTAR FOR THEY BROUGHT NEAR THEM <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH AND THEY BECAME HOLY AND THEY MAY BECOME <INTO> A SIGN FOR [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL 38As for the censers of those who sinned at the cost of their own lives, hammer them into sheets to overlay the altar, for these were presented before the LORD, and so have become holy. They will serve as a sign to the Israelites
39AND HE TOOK ELEAZAR THE PRIEST <OBJ.> [THE] CENSERS OF <THE> BRONZE WHICH THEY HAD BROUGHT NEAR THE [ONES WHO] WERE BURNED AND PEOPLE BEAT OUT THEM OVERLAY FOR THE ALTAR 39So Eleazar the priest took the bronze censers brought by those who had been burned up, and he had them hammered out to overlay the altar,
40A REMINDER TO [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL SO THAT THAT NOT HE MAY DRAW NEAR A MAN STRANGE WHO NOT [IS] ONE OF [THE] OFFSPRING OF AARON HE TO MAKE SMOKE INCENSE <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH AND NOT HE WILL BE LIKE KORAH AND LIKE COMPANY HIS JUST AS HE HAD SPOKEN YAHWEH BY [THE] HAND OF MOSES TO <THE> HIM 40just as the LORD commanded him through Moses This was to be a reminder to the Israelites that no outsider who is not a descendant of Aaron should approach to offer incense before the LORD, lest he become like Korah and his followers.
41AND THEY GRUMBLED ALL [THE] CONGREGATION OF [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL FROM [THE] NEXT DAY ON MOSES AND ON AARON <TO> SAYING YOU YOU HAVE KILLED <OBJ.> [THE] PEOPLE OF YAHWEH Murmuring and Plague (1 Corinthians 10:1–13) 41The next day the whole congregation of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron, saying, “You have killed the LORD’s people!”
42AND IT WAS WHEN ASSEMBLED THE CONGREGATION ON MOSES AND ON AARON AND THEY TURNED TO [THE] TENT OF MEETING AND THERE! IT COVERED IT THE CLOUD AND IT APPEARED [THE] GLORY OF YAHWEH 42But when the congregation gathered against them, Moses and Aaron turned toward the Tent of Meeting, and suddenly the cloud covered it and the glory of the LORD appeared.
43AND HE CAME MOSES AND AARON TO [THE] FACE OF [THE] TENT OF MEETING 43Then Moses and Aaron went to the front of the Tent of Meeting,
45GET AWAY FROM AMONG THE CONGREGATION <THE> THIS SO I MAY MAKE AN END OF <OBJ.> THEM LIKE A MOMENT AND THEY FELL ON FACES THEIR 45“Get away from this congregation so that I may consume them in an instant.” And Moses and Aaron fell facedown.
46AND HE SAID MOSES TO AARON TAKE <OBJ.> THE CENSER AND PUT ON IT FIRE FROM ON THE ALTAR AND SET INCENSE AND TAKE [IT] QUICKLY TO THE CONGREGATION AND MAKE ATONEMENT ON THEM FOR IT HAS GONE FORTH <THE> WRATH FROM TO BEFORE YAHWEH IT HAS BEGUN THE PLAGUE 46Moses said to Aaron, “Take your censer, place fire from the altar in it, and add incense. Go quickly to the congregation and make atonement for them, because wrath has come out from the LORD; the plague has begun.”
47AND HE TOOK [IT] AARON JUST AS HE HAD SAID MOSES AND HE RAN INTO [THE] MIDDLE OF THE ASSEMBLY AND THERE! IT HAD BEGUN THE PLAGUE AMONG THE PEOPLE AND HE PUT <OBJ.> THE INCENSE AND HE MADE ATONEMENT ON THE PEOPLE 47So Aaron took the censer as Moses had ordered and ran into the midst of the assembly. And seeing that the plague had begun among the people, he offered the incense and made atonement for the people.
48AND HE STOOD BETWEEN THE DEAD AND BETWEEN THE LIVING AND IT WAS RESTRAINED THE PLAGUE 48He stood between the living and the dead, and the plague was halted.
49AND THEY WERE THOSE [WHO] DIED BY THE PLAGUE FOUR- TEEN THOUSAND AND SEVEN HUNDRED<S> <FROM> <TO> BESIDES THE [ONES WHO] DIED ON [THE] MATTER OF KORAH 49But those who died from the plague numbered 14,700 in addition to those who had died on account of Korah.
50AND HE RETURNED AARON TO MOSES TO [THE] ENTRANCE OF [THE] TENT OF MEETING AND THE PLAGUE IT HAD BEEN RESTRAINED 50Then Aaron returned to Moses at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting, since the plague had been halted.
