1GIVE EAR TO! O PEOPLE MY INSTRUCTION MY INCLINE EAR YOUR TO [THE] WORDS OF MOUTH MY 1Give ear, O my people, to my instruction; listen to the words of my mouth.
2I WILL OPEN IN A PARABLE MOUTH MY I WILL POUR FORTH RIDDLES FROM ANTIQUITY 2I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things hidden from the beginning,*NoteCloseOr from ancient times; see also LXX; cited in Matthew 13:35
3WHICH WE HAVE HEARD AND WE HAVE KNOWN THEM AND ANCESTORS OUR THEY HAVE RECOUNTED TO US 3that we have heard and known and our fathers have relayed to us.
4NOT WE WILL HIDE FROM DESCENDANTS THEIR TO A GENERATION LATER RECOUNTING [THE] PRAISES OF YAHWEH AND MIGHT HIS AND WONDERS HIS WHICH HE HAS DONE 4We will not hide them from their children but will declare to the next generation the praises of the LORD and His might and the wonders He has performed.
5AND HE ESTABLISHED A TESTIMONY IN JACOB AND A LAW HE APPOINTED IN ISRAEL WHICH HE COMMANDED <OBJ.> ANCESTORS OUR TO MAKE KNOWN THEM TO CHILDREN THEIR 5For He established a testimony in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, which He commanded our fathers to teach to their children,
6SO THAT THEY MAY KNOW A GENERATION LATER CHILDREN [WHO] THEY WILL BE BORN THEY WILL ARISE AND MAY THEY RECOUNT [THEM] TO CHILDREN THEIR 6that the coming generation would know them— even children yet to be born— to arise and tell their own children
7SO THEY MAY PUT IN GOD CONFIDENCE THEIR AND NOT THEY WILL FORGET [THE] DEEDS OF GOD AND COMMANDMENTS HIS THEY WILL OBSERVE 7that they should put their confidence in God, not forgetting His works, but keeping His commandments.
8AND NOT THEY WILL BE LIKE ANCESTORS THEIR A GENERATION STUBBORN AND REBELLIOUS A GENERATION [WHICH] NOT IT DIRECTED HEART ITS AND [WHICH] NOT IT WAS FAITHFUL WITH GOD SPIRIT ITS 8Then they will not be like their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious generation, whose heart was not loyal, whose spirit was not faithful to God.
9[THE] PEOPLE OF EPHRAIM [WERE] EQUIPPED OF SHOOTERS OF A BOW THEY TURNED BACK ON [THE] DAY OF BATTLE 9The archers of Ephraim turned back on the day of battle.
10NOT THEY KEPT [THE] COVENANT OF GOD AND IN LAW HIS THEY REFUSED TO WALK 10They failed to keep God’s covenant and refused to live by His law.
11AND THEY FORGOT DEEDS HIS AND WONDERS HIS WHICH HE HAD SHOWN THEM 11They forgot what He had done, the wonders He had shown them.
12BEFORE ANCESTORS THEIR HE DID WONDER[S] IN [THE] LAND OF EGYPT [THE] REGION OF ZOAN 12He worked wonders before their fathers in the land of Egypt, in the region of Zoan.
13HE SPLIT OPEN [THE] SEA AND HE BROUGHT THROUGH THEM AND HE MADE TO STAND UP [THE] WATERS LIKE A HEAP 13He split the sea and brought them through; He set the waters upright like a wall.
14AND HE GUIDED THEM BY THE CLOUD BY DAY AND ALL THE NIGHT BY [THE] LIGHT OF A FIRE 14He led them with a cloud by day and with a light of fire all night.
15HE SPLIT OPEN ROCKS IN THE WILDERNESS AND HE GAVE [THEM] TO DRINK LIKE DEEPS MUCH 15He split the rocks in the wilderness and gave them drink as abundant as the seas.
16AND HE BROUGHT OUT STREAMS FROM A ROCK AND HE MADE TO FLOW DOWN LIKE <THE> RIVERS WATER 16He brought streams from the stone and made water flow down like rivers.
17AND THEY REPEATED AGAIN TO SIN TO HIM BY REBELLING AGAINST [THE] MOST HIGH IN THE DRY REGION 17But they continued to sin against Him, rebelling in the desert against the Most High.
18AND THEY PUT TO [THE] TEST GOD IN HEART THEIR BY REQUESTING FOOD FOR SELVES THEIR 18They willfully tested God by demanding the food they craved.
19AND THEY SPOKE AGAINST GOD THEY SAID ¿ IS HE ABLE GOD TO ARRANGE A TABLE IN THE WILDERNESS 19They spoke against God, saying, “Can God really prepare a table in the wilderness?
20THERE! HE STRUCK A ROCK AND THEY FLOWED OUT WATERS AND TORRENTS THEY OVERFLOWED ¿ ALSO FOOD IS HE ABLE TO GIVE OR? WILL HE PREPARE MEAT FOR PEOPLE HIS 20When He struck the rock, water gushed out and torrents raged. But can He also give bread or supply His people with meat?”
21<TO> THEREFORE HE HEARD YAHWEH AND HE WAS FURIOUS AND FIRE IT WAS KINDLED IN JACOB AND ALSO ANGER IT WENT UP IN ISRAEL 21Therefore the LORD heard and was filled with wrath; so a fire was kindled against Jacob, and His anger flared against Israel,
22FOR NOT THEY TRUSTED IN GOD AND NOT THEY TRUSTED IN SALVATION HIS 22because they did not believe God or rely on His salvation.
23AND HE COMMANDED CLOUDS <FROM> ABOVE AND [THE] DOORS OF HEAVEN HE OPENED 23Yet He commanded the clouds above and opened the doors of the heavens.
24AND HE RAINED DOWN ON THEM MANNA TO EAT AND [THE] GRAIN OF HEAVEN HE GAVE TO THEM 24He rained down manna for them to eat; He gave them grain from heaven.*NoteCloseCited in John 6:31
25BREAD OF MIGHTY [ONES] HE ATE EVERYONE FOOD HE SENT TO THEM TO SATIETY 25Man ate the bread of angels; He sent them food in abundance.
26HE LED OUT AN EAST WIND IN THE HEAVENS AND HE LED FORTH BY STRENGTH HIS A SOUTH WIND 26He stirred the east wind from the heavens and drove the south wind by His might.
27AND HE RAINED DOWN ON THEM LIKE <THE> DUST MEAT AND LIKE [THE] SAND OF [THE] SEAS BIRD[S] OF WING 27He rained meat on them like dust, and winged birds like the sand of the sea.
28AND HE MADE [THEM] FALL IN [THE] MIDST OF CAMP HIS AROUND <TO> DWELLING<S> HIS 28He felled them in the midst of their camp, all around their dwellings.
29AND THEY ATE AND THEY WERE SATISFIED EXCEEDINGLY AND DESIRE THEIR HE BROUGHT TO THEM 29So they ate and were well filled, for He gave them what they craved.
30NOT THEY HAD BECOME ESTRANGED FROM DESIRE THEIR STILL FOOD THEIR [WAS] IN MOUTH THEIR 30Yet before they had filled their desire, with the food still in their mouths,
31AND [THE] ANGER OF GOD IT WENT UP IN THEM AND HE KILLED AMONG VIGOROUS ONES THEIR AND [THE] YOUNG MEN OF ISRAEL HE MADE BOW DOWN 31God’s anger flared against them, and He put to death their strongest and subdued the young men of Israel.
32IN ALL THIS THEY SINNED AGAIN AND NOT THEY BELIEVED IN WONDERS HIS 32In spite of all this, they kept on sinning; despite His wonderful works, they did not believe.
33AND HE BROUGHT TO AN END IN <THE> FUTILITY DAYS THEIR AND YEARS THEIR IN <THE> SUDDEN TERROR 33So He ended their days in futility,*NoteCloseOr in vapor and their years in sudden terror.
34IF HE KILLED THEM AND THEY SOUGHT HIM AND THEY RETURNED AND THEY SOUGHT EARNESTLY GOD 34When He slew them, they would seek Him; they repented and searched for God.
35AND THEY REMEMBERED THAT GOD [WAS] ROCK THEIR AND GOD MOST HIGH [WAS] REDEEMER THEIR 35And they remembered that God was their Rock, that God Most High*NoteCloseHebrew El-Elyon was their Redeemer.
36AND THEY DECEIVED HIM WITH MOUTH THEIR AND WITH TONGUE THEIR THEY LIED TO HIM 36But they deceived Him with their mouths, and lied to Him with their tongues.
37AND HEART THEIR NOT [WAS] STEADFAST WITH HIM AND NOT THEY WERE FAITHFUL IN COVENANT HIS 37Their hearts were disloyal to Him, and they were unfaithful to His covenant.
38AND HE [WAS] COMPASSIONATE HE ATONED FOR INIQUITY AND NOT HE DESTROYED [THEM] AND HE INCREASED TO TURN BACK ANGER HIS AND NOT HE STIRRED UP ALL RAGE HIS 38And yet He was compassionate; He forgave their iniquity and did not destroy them. He often restrained His anger and did not unleash His full wrath.
39AND HE REMEMBERED THAT [WERE] FLESH THEY A WIND [WHICH] GOES AND NOT IT RETURNS 39He remembered that they were but flesh, a passing breeze that does not return.
40HOW OFTEN! THEY REBELLED AGAINST HIM IN THE WILDERNESS THEY GRIEVED HIM IN A DESOLATE PLACE 40How often they disobeyed Him in the wilderness and grieved Him in the desert!
41AND THEY RETURNED AND THEY PUT TO [THE] TEST GOD AND [THE] HOLY [ONE] OF ISRAEL THEY PAINED 41Again and again they tested God and provoked the Holy One of Israel.
42NOT THEY REMEMBERED <OBJ.> HAND HIS [THE] DAY WHEN HE RANSOMED THEM FROM [THE] OPPONENT 42They did not remember His power*NoteCloseOr His hand — the day He redeemed them from the adversary,
43WHEN HE PERFORMED IN EGYPT SIGNS HIS AND WONDERS HIS IN [THE] REGION OF ZOAN 43when He performed His signs in Egypt and His wonders in the fields of Zoan.
44AND HE TURNED INTO BLOOD CANALS THEIR AND STREAMS THEIR NOT THEY DRANK! 44He turned their rivers to blood, and from their streams they could not drink.
45HE SENT AMONG THEM A SWARM OF FLIES AND IT DEVOURED THEM AND FROG[S] AND IT RUINED THEM 45He sent swarms of flies that devoured them, and frogs that devastated them.
46AND HE GAVE TO THE LOCUST PRODUCE THEIR AND [THE] RESULT OF TOIL THEIR TO THE LOCUST 46He gave their crops to the grasshopper, the fruit of their labor to the locust.
47HE KILLED WITH <THE> HAIL VINE[S] THEIR AND SYCAMORE-FIG TREES THEIR WITH <THE> A FLOOD 47He killed their vines with hailstones and their sycamore-figs with sleet.*NoteCloseOr frost or driving rain
48AND HE DELIVERED UP TO <THE> HAIL CATTLE THEIR AND LIVESTOCK THEIR TO <THE> LIGHTNING BOLTS 48He abandoned their cattle to the hail and their livestock to bolts of lightning.
49HE SENT ON THEM [THE] BURNING OF ANGER HIS FURY AND INDIGNATION AND TROUBLE A BAND OF ANGELS OF CALAMITIES 49He unleashed His fury against them, wrath, indignation, and calamity— a band of destroying angels.
50HE MADE LEVEL A PATH FOR ANGER HIS NOT HE KEPT BACK FROM DEATH LIFE THEIR AND LIFE THEIR TO THE PESTILENCE HE DELIVERED UP 50He cleared a path for His anger; He did not spare them from death but delivered their lives to the plague.
51AND HE STRUCK DOWN EVERY FIRSTBORN IN EGYPT [THE] BEGINNING OF MANLY VIGOR<S> IN [THE] TENTS OF HAM 51He struck all the firstborn of Egypt, the virility in the tents of Ham.
52AND HE LED OUT LIKE <THE> SHEEP PEOPLE HIS AND HE LED THEM LIKE <THE> FLOCK IN THE WILDERNESS 52He led out His people like sheep and guided them like a flock in the wilderness.
53AND HE GUIDED THEM TO SECURITY AND NOT THEY WERE AFRAID AND <OBJ.> ENEMIES THEIR IT COVERED THE SEA 53He led them safely, so they did not fear, but the sea engulfed their enemies.
54AND HE BROUGHT THEM TO [THE] TERRITORY OF HOLINESS HIS [THE] MOUNTAIN WHICH IT HAD ACQUIRED RIGHT [HAND] HIS 54He brought them to His holy land, to the mountain His right hand had acquired.
55AND HE DROVE OUT FROM BEFORE THEM NATIONS AND HE MADE FALL THEM BY A MEASURING-LINE OF INHERITANCE AND HE CAUSED TO DWELL IN TENTS THEIR [THE] TRIBES OF ISRAEL 55He drove out nations before them and apportioned their inheritance; He settled the tribes of Israel in their tents.
56AND THEY PUT TO [THE] TEST AND THEY REBELLED AGAINST <OBJ.> GOD MOST HIGH AND TESTIMONIES HIS NOT THEY KEPT 56But they tested and disobeyed God Most High, for they did not keep His decrees.
57AND THEY TURNED BACK AND THEY ACTED TREACHEROUSLY LIKE ANCESTORS THEIR THEY CHANGED LIKE A BOW OF DECEIT 57They turned back and were faithless like their fathers, twisted like a faulty bow.
58AND THEY PROVOKED TO ANGER HIM BY HIGH PLACES THEIR AND BY IDOLS THEIR THEY MADE JEALOUS HIM 58They enraged Him with their high places and provoked His jealousy with their idols.
59HE HEARD GOD AND HE WAS FURIOUS AND HE REJECTED EXCEEDINGLY <IN> ISRAEL 59On hearing it, God was furious and rejected Israel completely.
60AND HE ABANDONED [THE] TABERNACLE OF SHILOH [THE] TENT [WHICH] HE HAD PITCHED AMONG <THE> HUMANKIND 60He abandoned the tabernacle of Shiloh, the tent He had pitched among men.
61AND HE GAVE TO <THE> CAPTIVITY STRENGTH HIS AND SPLENDOR HIS IN [THE] HAND OF [THE] OPPONENT 61He delivered His strength to captivity, and His splendor to the hand of the adversary.
62AND HE DELIVERED UP TO THE SWORD PEOPLE HIS AND WITH INHERITANCE HIS HE WAS FURIOUS 62He surrendered His people to the sword because He was enraged by His heritage.
63YOUNG MEN ITS IT CONSUMED FIRE AND YOUNG WOMEN ITS NOT THEY WERE PRAISED 63Fire consumed His young men, and their maidens were left without wedding songs.
64PRIESTS ITS BY THE SWORD THEY FELL AND WIDOWS ITS NOT THEY WEPT 64His priests fell by the sword, but their widows could not lament.
65AND HE AWOKE LIKE A SLEEPER [THE] LORD LIKE A WARRIOR OVERCOME FROM WINE 65Then the Lord awoke as from sleep, like a mighty warrior overcome by wine.
66AND HE STRUCK OPPONENTS HIS BACKWARDS A REPROACH OF PERPETUITY HE GAVE TO THEM 66He beat back His foes; He put them to everlasting shame.
67AND HE REJECTED <IN> [THE] TENT OF JOSEPH AND <IN> [THE] TRIBE OF EPHRAIM NOT HE CHOSE 67He rejected the tent of Joseph and refused the tribe of Ephraim.
68AND HE CHOSE <OBJ.> [THE] TRIBE OF JUDAH <OBJ.> [THE] MOUNTAIN OF ZION WHICH HE LOVED 68But He chose the tribe of Judah, Mount Zion, which He loved.
69AND HE BUILT LIKE [THE] HIGH [THINGS] SANCTUARY HIS LIKE [THE] EARTH [WHICH] HE FOUNDED IT FOR EVER 69He built His sanctuary like the heights, like the earth He has established forever.
70AND HE CHOSE <IN> DAVID SERVANT HIS AND HE TOOK HIM FROM [THE] FOLDS OF SHEEP 70He chose David His servant and took him from the sheepfolds;
71FROM AFTER NURSING [SHEEP] HE BROUGHT HIM TO SHEPHERD <IN> JACOB PEOPLE HIS AND <IN> ISRAEL INHERITANCE HIS 71from tending the ewes He brought him to be shepherd of His people Jacob, of Israel His inheritance.
72AND HE SHEPHERDED THEM ACCORDING TO [THE] INTEGRITY OF HEART HIS AND WITH [THE] SKILL OF HANDS HIS HE LED THEM 72So David shepherded them with integrity of heart and guided them with skillful hands.
