18AND THE WOMAN WHOM YOU SAW IS THE CITY <THE> GREAT WHICH IS HAVING KINGSHIP OVER THE KINGS OF THE EARTH. 18And the woman you saw is the great city that rules over the kings of the earth. ”
1AND AFTER THESE THINGS I SAW ANOTHER ANGEL DESCENDING OUT OF <THE> HEAVEN, HAVING AUTHORITY GREAT, AND THE EARTH WAS ILLUMINATED FROM THE GLORY OF HIM. Babylon Is Fallen (Isaiah 21:1–10) 1After this I saw another angel descending from heaven with great authority, and the earth was illuminated by his glory.
2AND HE CRIED OUT IN A MIGHTY VOICE LOUD SAYING: FALLEN FALLEN IS BABYLON THE GREAT AND SHE HAS BECOME A HABITATION OF DEMONS AND A PRISON OF EVERY SPIRIT UNCLEAN AND A PRISON OF EVERY BIRD UNCLEAN AND A PRISON OF EVERY CREATURE UNCLEAN AND HATED, 2And he cried out in a mighty voice: “Fallen, fallen is Babylon the great!*NoteCloseSee Isaiah 21:9 and Revelation 14:8. She has become a lair for demons and a haunt for every unclean spirit, every unclean bird, and every detestable beast.*NoteCloseNE, WH, BYZ, and TR a haunt for every unclean spirit and every unclean and detestable bird.
3FOR OF THE WINE OF THE WRATH OF THE SEXUAL IMMORALITY OF HER THEY HAVE DRUNK ALL THE NATIONS, AND THE KINGS OF THE EARTH WITH HER COMMITTED SEXUAL IMMORALITY, AND THE MERCHANTS OF THE EARTH THROUGH THE POWER OF THE SENSUALITY OF HER WERE ENRICHED. 3All the nations have drunk*NoteCloseSBL and WH have fallen by the wine of the passion of her immorality. The kings of the earth were immoral with her, and the merchants of the earth have grown wealthy from the extravagance of her luxury. ”
4AND I HEARD ANOTHER VOICE FROM <THE> HEAVEN SAYING: DO COME YOU WHO [ARE] PEOPLE OF MINE FROM HER, SO THAT NOT YOU MAY HAVE FELLOWSHIP IN THE SINS OF HER, AND OF THE PLAGUES OF HER SO THAT NOT YOU MAY RECEIVE; 4Then I heard another voice from heaven say: “Come out of her, My people,*NoteCloseSee Jeremiah 51:45. so that you will not share in her sins or contract any of her plagues.
5FOR THEY WERE HEAPED IN HER <THE> SINS AS HIGH AS <THE> HEAVEN, AND HAS REMEMBERED <THE> GOD THE INIQUITIES OF HER. 5For her sins are piled up to heaven, and God has remembered her iniquities.
6DO GIVE BACK TO HER AS ALSO SHE HAS RENDERED TO YOU AND DO PAY BACK DOUBLE TO HER THE TWOFOLD ACCORDING TO THE WORKS OF HER. IN THE CUP WHICH SHE HAS MIXED, DO MIX TO HER DOUBLE. 6Give back to her as she has done to others; pay her back double for what she has done; mix her a double portion in her own cup.
7SO MUCH AS SHE HAS GLORIFIED HERSELF AND LIVED IN LUXURY, SO MUCH DO GIVE TO HER TORMENT AND MISERY, BECAUSE IN THE HEART OF HERSELF SHE SAYS THAT I SIT [AS] A QUEEN AND A WIDOW NEVER I AM AND MOURNING CERTAINLY NOT SHALL I SEE. 7As much as she has glorified herself and lived in luxury, give her the same measure of torment and grief. In her heart she says ‘I sit as queen; I am not a widow and will never see grief. ’
8BECAUSE OF THIS IN ONE DAY WILL COME THE PLAGUES OF HER, DEATH AND MISERY AND FAMINE, AND WITH FIRE SHE WILL BE BURNED UP, BECAUSE MIGHTY [IS THE] LORD <THE> GOD THE [ONE] HAVING JUDGED HER. 8Therefore her plagues will come in one day— death and grief and famine— and she will be consumed by fire, for mighty is the Lord God who judges her. ”
9AND THEY WILL WEEP [FOR] HER AND THEY WILL WAIL FOR HER THE KINGS OF THE EARTH THE [ONES WHO] WITH HER HAVING COMMITTED SEXUAL IMMORALITY AND HAVING LIVED LUXURIOUSLY, WHEN THEY MAY SEE THE SMOKE OF THE BURNING OF HER Lament over Babylon 9Then the kings of the earth who committed sexual immorality and lived in luxury with her will weep and wail at the sight of the smoke rising from the fire that consumes her.*NoteCloseLiterally when they see the smoke of her burning; also in verse 18
10FROM AFAR STANDING BECAUSE OF THE FEAR OF THE TORMENT OF HER SAYING: WOE WOE YOU WHO [ARE] THE CITY <THE> GREAT BABYLON THE CITY <THE> STRONG! FOR IN ONE HOUR HAS COME THE JUDGMENT OF YOU. 10In fear of her torment, they will stand at a distance and cry out: “Woe, woe to the great city, the mighty city of Babylon! For in a single hour your judgment has come. ”
11AND THE MERCHANTS OF THE EARTH WEEP AND THEY MOURN FOR HER, BECAUSE THE CARGO OF THEM NO [ONE] BUYS NO LONGER 11And the merchants of the earth will weep and mourn over her, because there is no one left to buy their cargo—
12CARGO OF GOLD AND OF SILVER AND OF STONE PRECIOUS AND OF PEARLS AND OF FINE LINEN [THINGS] AND OF PURPLE CLOTH AND OF SILK AND OF SCARLET AND ALL WOOD CITRON AND EVERY ARTICLE OF IVORY AND EVERY ARTICLE OF WOOD MOST PRECIOUS AND OF BRONZE AND OF IRON AND OF MARBLE 12cargo of gold, silver, precious stones, and pearls; of fine linen, purple, silk, and scarlet; of all kinds of citron wood and every article of ivory, precious wood, bronze, iron, and marble;
13AND CINNAMON AND SPICE AND INCENSE AND MYRRH AND FRANKINCENSE AND WINE AND OIL AND FINEST FLOUR AND WHEAT AND CATTLE AND SHEEP AND OF HORSES AND OF CHARIOTS AND OF SLAVES AND SOULS OF MEN. 13of cinnamon, spice, incense, myrrh, and frankincense; of wine, olive oil, fine flour, and wheat; of cattle, sheep, horses, and carriages; of bodies and souls of slaves.
14AND THE RIPE FRUIT OF YOU OF THE DESIRE OF THE SOUL ARE DEPARTED FROM YOU, AND ALL THE SUMPTUOUS THINGS AND THE SPLENDID THINGS WERE DESTROYED FROM YOU, AND NO LONGER CERTAINLY NOT THEM THEY WILL FIND. 14And they will say:*NoteCloseLiterally And: “The fruit of your soul’s desire has departed from you; all your luxury and splendor have vanished never to be seen again. ”
15THE MERCHANTS OF THESE THINGS WHICH HAVING BEEN ENRICHED FROM HER FROM AFAR WILL STAND BECAUSE OF THE FEAR OF THE TORMENT OF HER WEEPING AND MOURNING, 15The merchants who sold these things and gained their wealth from her will stand at a distance, in fear of her torment. They will weep and mourn,
16AND SAYING: WOE WOE YOU WHO [ARE] THE CITY <THE> GREAT, WHICH HAVING BEEN CLOTHED WITH FINE LINEN AND PURPLE AND SCARLET AND ADORNED WITH GOLD [THINGS] AND WITH STONE PRECIOUS AND WITH PEARL! 16saying: “Woe, woe to the great city, clothed in fine linen and purple and scarlet, adorned with gold and precious stones and pearls!
17SINCE IN ONE HOUR HAS BEEN BROUGHT TO DESOLATION <THE> SO GREAT WEALTH. AND EVERY SHIPMASTER AND EVERY [ONE] WHO ON A PLACE OF THE SAILING THE MULTITUDES AND SAILORS AND AS MANY AS THE SEA TRADE BY AT A DISTANCE STOOD 17For in a single hour such fabulous wealth has been destroyed! ” Every shipmaster, passenger, and sailor, and all who make their living from the sea, will stand at a distance
18AND WERE CRYING OUT SEEING THE SMOKE OF THE BURNING OF HER SAYING; WHAT [IS] LIKE AS THE CITY <THE> GREAT? 18and cry out at the sight of the smoke rising from the fire that consumes her. “What city was ever like this great city? ” they will exclaim.
19AND THEY CAST DUST UPON THE HEADS OF THEM AND THEY WERE CRYING OUT WEEPING AND MOURNING AND SAYING: WOE WOE THE CITY <THE> GREAT, IN WHICH WERE ENRICHED ALL THOSE HAVING <THE> SHIPS IN THE SEA THROUGH THE WEALTH OF HER! SINCE IN ONE HOUR SHE HAS BEEN DESOLATED. 19Then they will throw dust on their heads as they weep and mourn and cry out: “Woe, woe to the great city, where all who had ships on the sea were enriched by her wealth! For in a single hour she has been destroyed. ”
20DO REJOICE OVER HER, O HEAVEN AND YOU SAINTS AND YOU APOSTLES AND YOU PROPHETS, BECAUSE DID JUDGE <THE> GOD THE JUDGMENT FOR YOU AGAINST HER. 20Rejoice over her, O heaven, and you saints and apostles and prophets, because God has pronounced for you His judgment against her.
21AND TOOK UP ONE ANGEL A MIGHTY STONE LIKE A MILLSTONE GREAT AND CAST [IT] INTO THE SEA SAYING: THUS WITH VIOLENCE WILL BE CAST DOWN BABYLON THE GREAT CITY AND CERTAINLY NOT MAY BE FOUND ANY LONGER. The Doom of Babylon 21Then a mighty angel picked up a stone the size of a great millstone and cast it into the sea, saying: “With such violence the great city of Babylon will be cast down, never to be seen again.
22AND SOUND OF HARPISTS AND MUSICIANS AND FLUTE PLAYERS AND TRUMPETERS CERTAINLY NOT MAY BE HEARD IN YOU ANY LONGER, AND ANY CRAFTSMEN OF ANY CRAFT CERTAINLY NOT MAY BE FOUND IN YOU ANY LONGER, AND [THE] SOUND OF A MILLSTONE CERTAINLY NOT MAY BE HEARD IN YOU ANY LONGER, 22And the sound of harpists and musicians, of flute players and trumpeters, will never ring out in you again. Nor will any craftsmen of any trade be found in you again, nor the sound of a millstone be heard in you again.
23AND [THE] LIGHT OF LAMP CERTAINLY NOT MAY SHINE IN YOU ANY LONGER, AND [THE] VOICE OF A BRIDEGROOM AND A BRIDE CERTAINLY NOT MAY BE HEARD IN YOU ANY LONGER, FOR THE MERCHANTS OF YOU WERE THE GREAT ONES OF THE EARTH, BECAUSE BY THE SORCERY OF YOU WERE DECEIVED ALL THE NATIONS. 23The light of a lamp will never shine in you again, and the voices of a bride and bridegroom will never call out in you again. For your merchants were the great ones of the earth, because all the nations were deceived by your sorcery. ”
24AND IN HER [THE] BLOOD OF PROPHETS AND OF SAINTS WAS FOUND AND OF ALL THOSE SLAIN ON THE EARTH. 24And there was found in her the blood of prophets and saints, and of all who had been slain on the earth.
