29BUT HE WHO [IS] ON THE INWARD A JEW [IS ONE], AND CIRCUMCISION [IS] OF HEART IN SPIRIT NOT IN LETTER, OF WHOM THE PRAISE [IS] NOT OF MEN BUT OF <THE> GOD. 29No, a man is a Jew because he is one inwardly, and circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a man’s praise does not come from men, but from God.
1WHAT THEN [IS] THE SUPERIORITY OF THE JEW? OR WHAT [IS] THE BENEFIT OF THE CIRCUMCISION? God Remains Faithful 1What, then, is the advantage of being a Jew? Or what is the value of circumcision?
2MUCH IN EVERY WAY; CHIEFLY INDEED FOR FOR THEY WERE ENTRUSTED WITH THE ORACLES <THE> OF GOD. 2Much in every way. First of all they have been entrusted with the very words*NoteCloseOr the oracles of God.
3WHAT FOR IF DISBELIEVED SOME? SURELY NOT THE UNBELIEF OF THEM THE FAITHFULNESS <THE> OF GOD WILL NULLIFY? 3What if some did not have faith? Will their lack of faith nullify God’s faithfulness?
4NEVER WOULD IT BE! SHOULD IT BE HOWEVER <THE> GOD TRUE, EVERY NOW MAN A LIAR EVEN AS IT HAS BEEN WRITTEN: THAT THEN YOU MAY BE JUSTIFIED IN THE WORDS OF YOU AND WILL PREVAIL IN <THE> JUDGING YOU. 4Certainly not! Let God be true and every man a liar. As it is written: “So that You may be proved right when You speak and victorious when You judge.”*NoteCloseOr when You are judged; Psalm 51:4 (see also LXX)
5IF HOWEVER THE UNRIGHTEOUSNESS OF US GOD’S RIGHTEOUSNESS SHOWS, WHAT WILL WE SAY? SURELY NOT [IS] UNRIGHTEOUS <THE> GOD WHO IS INFLICTING THE WRATH? ACCORDING TO MAN I SPEAK; 5But if our unrighteousness highlights the righteousness of God, what shall we say? That God is unjust to inflict His wrath on us? I am speaking in human terms.
6NEVER WOULD IT BE! OTHERWISE HOW WILL JUDGE <THE> GOD THE WORLD? 6Certainly not! In that case, how could God judge the world?
7IF HOWEVER THE TRUTH <THE> OF GOD IN <THE> MY LIE ABOUNDED TO THE GLORY OF HIM, WHY STILL ALSO I MYSELF AS A SINNER AM JUDGED? 7However, if my falsehood accentuates God’s truthfulness, to the increase of His glory, why am I still condemned as a sinner?
8AND SURELY EVEN AS WE ARE DENIGRATED AND EVEN AS AFFIRM SOME [THAT] WE TO SAY THAT LET US DO THE [THINGS] EVIL THAT MAY COME THE GOOD THINGS? THEIR <THE> CONDEMNATION JUST IS. 8Why not say, as some slanderously claim that we say, Let us do evil that good may result”? Their condemnation is deserved!
9WHAT THEN? ARE WE BETTER? NOT AT ALL; WE HAVE ALREADY CHARGED FOR JEWS BOTH AND GREEKS ALL UNDER SIN TO BE There Is No One Righteous (Psalm 14:1–7; Psalm 53:1–6; Isaiah 59:1–17) 9What then? Are we any better? Not at all. For we have already made the charge that Jews and Greeks alike are all under sin.
10EVEN AS IT HAS BEEN WRITTEN THAT NONE THERE IS RIGHTEOUS NOT EVEN ONE; 10As it is written: “There is no one righteous, not even one.
11NONE THERE IS WHO IS UNDERSTANDING, NONE THERE IS WHO IS SEEKING AFTER <THE> GOD; 11There is no one who understands, no one who seeks God.
12ALL TURNED AWAY, TOGETHER THEY BECAME WORTHLESS; NONE THERE IS WHO IS PRACTICING GOOD, NOT THERE IS SO MUCH AS ONE. 12All have turned away, they have together become worthless; there is no one who does good, not even one.”*NoteClosePsalm 14:1–3 and Psalm 53:1–3 (see also LXX)
13A GRAVE OPENED [IS] THE THROAT OF THEM, WITH THE TONGUES OF THEM THEY WERE PRACTICING DECEIT; [THE] VENOM OF VIPERS [IS] UNDER THE LIPS OF THEM; 13“Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit.”*NoteClosePsalm 5:9 “The venom of vipers is on their lips.”*NoteClosePsalm 140:3
14OF WHOM THE MOUTH OF CURSING AND OF BITTERNESS IS FULL. 14“Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness.”*NoteClosePsalm 10:7 (see also LXX)
17AND [THE] WAY OF PEACE NOT THEY HAVE KNOWN. 17and the way of peace they have not known.”*NoteCloseIsaiah 59:7–8 (see also LXX)
18NOT THERE IS FEAR OF GOD BEFORE THE EYES OF THEM. 18“There is no fear of God before their eyes.”*NoteClosePsalm 36:1
19WE KNOW NOW THAT AS MUCH AS THE LAW SAYS TO THOSE UNDER THE LAW IT SPEAKS, SO THAT EVERY MOUTH MAY BE STOPPED, AND UNDER JUDGMENT MAY BE ALL THE WORLD <THE> TO GOD. 19Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God.
20THEREFORE BY WORKS OF [THE] LAW NOT WILL BE JUSTIFIED ANY FLESH BEFORE HIM; THROUGH FOR [THE] LAW [IS] KNOWLEDGE OF SIN. 20Therefore no one will be justified in His sight by works of the law. For the law merely brings awareness of sin.
21NOW HOWEVER APART FROM LAW [THE] RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD HAS BEEN REVEALED BEING BORNE WITNESS TO BY THE LAW AND THE PROPHETS, Righteousness through Faith in Christ (Philippians 3:1–11) 21But now, apart from the law, the righteousness of God has been revealed, as attested by the Law and the Prophets.
22[THE] RIGHTEOUSNESS NOW OF GOD THROUGH FAITH FROM JESUS CHRIST TOWARD ALL AND UPON ALL THOSE BELIEVING; NOT FOR THERE IS DISTINCTION. 22And this righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no distinction,
23ALL FOR HAVE SINNED AND THEY FALL SHORT OF THE GLORY <THE> OF GOD 23for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
24BEING JUSTIFIED FREELY BY THE OF HIM GRACE THROUGH THE REDEMPTION THAT [IS] IN CHRIST JESUS, 24and are justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus.
25WHOM SET FORTH AS <THE> GOD A PROPITIATION THROUGH <THE> FAITH IN <THE> HIS BLOOD FOR A SHOWING FORTH OF THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF HIM BECAUSE OF THE FORBEARANCE OF THE HAVING TAKEN PLACE BEFOREHAND SINS — (26) IN THE FORBEARANCE <THE> OF GOD; 25God presented Him as an atoning sacrifice*NoteCloseOr as a propitiation in His blood through faith, in order to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance He had passed over the sins committed beforehand.
26FOR OF THE SHOWING FORTH THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF HIM IN THE PRESENT TIME FOR <THE> TO BE HIM JUST AND JUSTIFYING THE [ONE] OF FAITH OF JESUS. 26He did this to demonstrate His righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and to justify the one who has faith in Jesus.
27WHERE THEN [IS] THE BOASTING? IT HAS BEEN EXCLUDED. THROUGH WHAT PRINCIPLE? THAT OF WORKS? NO, BUT THROUGH [THE] PRINCIPLE OF FAITH. 27Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. On what principle? On that of works? No, but on that of faith.
28WE RECKON THEREFORE TO BE JUSTIFIED BY FAITH A MAN APART FROM WORKS OF THE LAW. 28For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the law.
29OR OF JEWS [IS HE] THE GOD ONLY, SURELY [IS] NOW ALSO OF GENTILES? YES ALSO OF GENTILES, 29Is God the God of Jews only? Is He not the God of Gentiles too? Yes, of Gentiles too,
30IF INDEED ONE <THE> GOD [IS] WHO WILL JUSTIFY [THE] CIRCUMCISION BY FAITH AND [THE] UNCIRCUMCISION THROUGH THE [SAME] FAITH. 30since there is only one God, who will justify the circumcised by faith and the uncircumcised through that same faith.
31LAW THEN DO WE NULLIFY THROUGH <THE> FAITH? NEVER WOULD IT BE! INSTEAD LAW WE UPHOLD. 31Do we, then, nullify the law by this faith? Certainly not! Instead, we uphold the law.
