1[THE] WORD OF YAHWEH WHICH IT CAME TO ZEPHANIAH [THE] SON OF CUSHI [THE] SON OF GEDALIAH [THE] SON OF AMARIAH [THE] SON OF HEZEKIAH IN [THE] DAYS OF JOSIAH [THE] SON OF AMON [THE] KING OF JUDAH Zephaniah Prophesies Judgment on Judah (Matthew 13:36–43) 1This is the word of the LORD that came to Zephaniah son of Cushi, the son of Gedaliah, the son of Amariah, the son of Hezekiah, in the days of Josiah son of Amon king of Judah:
2UTTERLY <DESTROY> I WILL BRING TO AN END EVERYTHING FROM ON [THE] SURFACE OF THE GROUND [THE] UTTERANCE OF YAHWEH 2“I will completely sweep away everything from the face of the earth,” declares the LORD.
3I WILL BRING TO AN END HUMAN BEING AND ANIMAL I WILL BRING TO AN END [THE] BIRD[S] OF THE HEAVENS AND [THE] FISH<ES> OF THE SEA AND THE STUMBLING-BLOCKS WITH THE WICKED [PEOPLE] AND I WILL CUT OFF <OBJ.> <THE> HUMANKIND FROM ON [THE] SURFACE OF THE GROUND [THE] UTTERANCE OF YAHWEH 3“I will sweep away man and beast; I will sweep away the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, and the idols with their wicked worshipers.*NoteCloseOr and the idols that cause the wicked to stumble I will cut off mankind from the face of the earth,” declares the LORD.
4AND I WILL STRETCH OUT HAND MY ON JUDAH AND ON ALL [THE] INHABITANTS OF JERUSALEM AND I WILL CUT OFF FROM THE PLACE <THE> THIS <OBJ.> [THE] REMNANT OF <THE> BAAL <OBJ.> [THE] NAME OF THE PAGAN PRIESTS WITH THE PRIESTS 4“I will stretch out My hand against Judah and against all who dwell in Jerusalem. I will cut off from this place every remnant of Baal the names of the idolatrous and pagan priests—
5AND <OBJ.> THOSE [WHO] BOW DOWN ON THE ROOFS TO [THE] HOST OF THE HEAVENS AND <OBJ.> THOSE [WHO] BOW DOWN THOSE [WHO] SWEAR AN OATH TO YAHWEH AND THOSE [WHO] SWEAR AN OATH BY MILCOM 5those who bow on the rooftops to worship the host of heaven, those who bow down and swear by the LORD but also swear by Milcom,*NoteCloseOr by their king; Milcom is a variant of Molech; see Leviticus 18:21 and 1 Kings 11:7.
6AND <OBJ.> THOSE [WHO] HAVE TURNED BACK FROM AFTER YAHWEH AND [THOSE] WHO NOT THEY HAVE SOUGHT <OBJ.> YAHWEH AND NOT THEY HAVE SOUGHT HIM 6and those who turn back from following the LORD, neither seeking the LORD nor inquiring of Him.”
7HUSH! FROM BEFORE [THE] LORD YAHWEH FOR [IS] NEAR [THE] DAY OF YAHWEH FOR HE HAS PREPARED YAHWEH A SACRIFICE HE HAS CONSECRATED INVITED [ONES] HIS The Day of the LORD (Malachi 4:1–6; 1 Thessalonians 5:1–11; 2 Peter 3:8–13) 7Be silent in the presence of the Lord GOD, for the Day of the LORD is near. Indeed, the LORD has prepared a sacrifice; He has consecrated His guests.
8AND IT WILL BE ON [THE] DAY OF [THE] SACRIFICE OF YAHWEH AND I WILL VISIT [JUDGMENT] ON THE PRINCES AND ON [THE] SONS OF THE KING AND ON ALL THOSE [WHO] ARE CLOTHED CLOTHING FOREIGN 8On the Day of the LORD’s sacrifice I will punish the princes, the sons of the king, and all who are dressed in foreign apparel.
9AND I WILL VISIT [JUDGMENT] ON EVERY <THE> [ONE WHO] LEAPS OVER THE THRESHOLD ON THE DAY <THE> THAT THOSE [WHO] FILL [THE] HOUSE OF LORD<S> THEIR VIOLENCE AND DECEIT 9On that day I will punish all who leap over the threshold,*NoteCloseSee 1 Samuel 5:5. who fill the house of their master*NoteCloseOr the temple of their gods with violence and deceit.
10AND IT WILL BE ON THE DAY <THE> THAT [THE] UTTERANCE OF YAHWEH [THE] SOUND OF A CRY OF DISTRESS FROM [THE] GATE OF THE FISH<ES> AND WAILING FROM THE SECOND DISTRICT AND A CRASHING GREAT FROM THE HILLS 10On that day,” declares the LORD, “a cry will go up from the Fish Gate, a wail from the Second District,*NoteCloseOr the Second Quarter, a newer section of Jerusalem; Hebrew the Mishneh and a loud crashing from the hills.
11WAIL O INHABITANTS OF THE MORTAR FOR IT WILL BE DESTROYED ALL [THE] PEOPLE OF CANAAN THEY WILL BE CUT OFF ALL [THE] WEIGHERS OF SILVER 11Wail, O dwellers of the Hollow,*NoteCloseOr the market district or the Mortar for all your merchants*NoteCloseOr all the people of Canaan will be silenced; all who weigh out silver will be cut off.
12AND IT WILL BE AT THE TIME <THE> THAT I WILL SEARCH <OBJ.> JERUSALEM WITH <THE> LAMPS AND I WILL VISIT [JUDGMENT] ON THE PEOPLE WHO ARE THICKENING ON LEES THEIR WHO ARE SAYING IN HEART THEIR NOT HE WILL DO GOOD YAHWEH AND NOT HE WILL DO HARM 12And at that time I will search Jerusalem with lamps and punish the men settled in complacency,*NoteCloseOr thickening on the dregs who say to themselves, ‘The LORD will do nothing, either good or bad.’
13AND IT WILL BECOME WEALTH THEIR <INTO> PLUNDER AND HOUSES THEIR <INTO> A DESOLATION AND THEY WILL BUILD HOUSES AND NOT THEY WILL DWELL [IN THEM] AND THEY WILL PLANT VINEYARDS AND NOT THEY WILL DRINK <OBJ.> WINE THEIR 13Their wealth will be plundered and their houses laid waste. They will build houses but not inhabit them, and plant vineyards but never drink their wine.
14[IS] NEAR [THE] DAY OF YAHWEH <THE> GREAT NEAR AND HURRYING EXCEEDINGLY [THE] SOUND OF [THE] DAY OF YAHWEH BITTER [IS] SHOUTING OUT THERE A WARRIOR 14The great Day of the LORD is near— near and coming quickly. Listen, the Day of the LORD! Then the cry of the mighty will be bitter.
15[WILL BE] A DAY OF FURY THE DAY <THE> THAT A DAY OF TROUBLE AND DISTRESS A DAY OF DEVASTATION AND DESOLATION A DAY OF DARKNESS AND GLOOM A DAY OF CLOUD AND THICK DARKNESS 15That day will be a day of wrath, a day of trouble and distress, a day of destruction and desolation, a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and blackness,
16A DAY OF TRUMPET AND BATTLE-CRY ON THE CITIES <THE> FORTIFIED AND ON THE CORNERS <THE> HIGH 16a day of horn blast and battle cry against the fortified cities, and against the high corner towers.
17AND I WILL CAUSE DISTRESS TO <THE> HUMANKIND AND THEY WILL WALK LIKE <THE> BLIND [PEOPLE] FOR TO YAHWEH THEY HAVE SINNED AND IT WILL BE POURED OUT BLOOD THEIR LIKE <THE> DUST AND BOWEL[S] THEIR LIKE <THE> DUNG<S> 17I will bring such distress on mankind that they will walk like the blind, because they have sinned against the LORD. Their blood will be poured out like dust and their flesh like dung.
18NEITHER SILVER THEIR NOR GOLD THEIR NOT IT WILL BE ABLE TO DELIVER THEM ON [THE] DAY OF [THE] FURY OF YAHWEH AND IN [THE] FIRE OF JEALOUSY HIS IT WILL BE CONSUMED ALL THE EARTH FOR COMPLETE DESTRUCTION SURELY A TERRIBLE [THING] HE WILL MAKE WITH ALL [THE] INHABITANTS OF THE EARTH 18Neither their silver nor their gold will be able to deliver them on the Day of the LORD’s wrath. The whole earth will be consumed by the fire of His jealousy.” For indeed, He will make a sudden end of all who dwell on the earth.*NoteCloseOr of all the people living in the land
