40MORE BLESSED HOWEVER SHE IS IF IN THE SAME MANNER SHE SHALL REMAIN, ACCORDING TO <THE> MY JUDGMENT; I THINK NOW MYSELF ALSO [THE] SPIRIT OF GOD TO HAVE. 40In my judgment, however, she is happier if she remains as she is. And I think that I too have the Spirit of God.
1CONCERNING NOW THE IDOL-SACRIFICES, WE KNOW INDEED ALL KNOWLEDGE WE HAVE. <THE> KNOWLEDGE PUFFS UP, <THE> BUT LOVE BUILDS UP. Food Sacrificed to Idols (Ezekiel 14:1–11; Romans 14:13–23) 1Now about food sacrificed to idols: We know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffs up, but love builds up.
2IF NOW ANYONE THINKS TO HAVE KNOWN ANYTHING, NOT YET NO [THING] HE KNEW EVEN AS IT IS NECESSARY TO KNOW; 2The one who thinks he knows something does not yet know as he ought to know.
4CONCERNING THE EATING THEREFORE OF THE IDOL-SACRIFICES WE KNOW THAT NO [THING] AN IDOL [IS] IN [THE] WORLD AND THAT [THERE IS] NO GOD OTHER ONLY EXCEPT ONE. 4So about eating food sacrificed to idols: We know that an idol is nothing at all in the world, and that there is no God but one.
5EVEN TRULY IF INDEED THERE ARE [THOSE] NAMED GODS WHETHER IN HEAVEN OR ON <THE> EARTH, AS THERE ARE GODS MANY AND LORDS MANY; 5For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as there are many so-called gods and lords),
6YET TO US [THERE IS] ONE GOD THE FATHER OF WHOM [ARE] THE [THINGS] ALL AND WE OURSELVES FOR HIM, AND ONE LORD JESUS CHRIST THROUGH WHOM [ARE] THE [THINGS] ALL AND WE OURSELVES THROUGH HIM. 6yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we exist. And there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we exist.
7BUT NOT IN ALL [IS] THIS KNOWLEDGE; SOME NOW <THE> BY CUSTOM UNTIL NOW OF THE IDOL AS OF AN IDOL-SACRIFICE EAT, AND THE CONSCIENCE OF THEM WEAK BEING IT IS DEFILED. 7But not everyone has this knowledge. Some people are still so accustomed to idols that they eat such food as if it were sacrificed to an idol. And since their conscience is weak, it is defiled.
8FOOD HOWEVER US NOT WILL COMMEND <THE> TO GOD; NEITHER FOR IF NOT WE SHALL EAT [STILL] DO WE COME SHORT [THEN] NOR IF WE SHALL EAT HAVE WE AN ADVANTAGE. 8But food does not bring us closer to God: We are no worse if we do not eat, and no better if we do.
9DO BE CAREFUL HOWEVER LEST PERHAPS THE RIGHT OF YOU THIS AN OCCASION OF STUMBLING MAY BECOME TO THOSE WEAK. 9Be careful, however, that your freedom does not become a stumbling block to the weak.
10IF FOR ANYONE SHALL SEE YOU WHO IS HAVING KNOWLEDGE IN AN IDOL’S TEMPLE EATING, SURELY THE CONSCIENCE OF HIM WEAK BEING HE WILL BE ENCOURAGED <TO> <THE> THE IDOL-SACRIFICES TO EAT? 10For if someone with a weak conscience sees you who are well informed eating in an idol’s temple, will he not be encouraged to eat food sacrificed to idols?
11IS DESTROYED FOR THE [ONE] WHO IS BEING WEAK THROUGH <THE> YOUR KNOWLEDGE, THE BROTHER FOR WHOM CHRIST DIED. 11So this weak brother, for whom Christ died, is destroyed by your knowledge.
12THUS THEN SINNING AGAINST THE BROTHERS AND WOUNDING THEIR <THE> CONSCIENCE BEING WEAK, AGAINST CHRIST YOU SIN. 12By sinning against your brothers in this way and wounding their weak conscience, you sin against Christ.
13THEREFORE IF FOOD SNARES THE BROTHER OF MINE, CERTAINLY NOT SHALL I EAT MEAT TO THE AGE SO THAT NOT THE BROTHER OF MINE I MAY SNARE. 13Therefore, if what I eat causes my brother to stumble, I will never eat meat again, so that I will not cause him to stumble.
