20YOU WERE BOUGHT FOR WITH A PRICE; DO GLORIFY THEREFORE <THE> GOD IN THE BODY OF YOU AND IN THE SPIRIT OF YOU WHICH IS <THE> OF GOD. 20you were bought at a price. Therefore glorify God with your body.*NoteCloseBYZ and TR include and with your spirit, which belong to God.
1CONCERNING NOW [THE] THINGS ABOUT WHICH YOU WROTE TO ME [IT IS] GOOD FOR A MAN A WOMAN NOT TO TOUCH; Principles of Marriage 1Now for the matters you wrote about: It is good to abstain from sexual relations.*NoteCloseLiterally It is good for a man not to touch a woman.
2BECAUSE OF HOWEVER <THE> SEXUAL IMMORALITY EACH MAN <THE> HIS OWN WIFE SHOULD HAVE, AND EACH [WOMAN] THE [HER] OWN HUSBAND SHOULD HAVE. 2But because there is so much sexual immorality, each man should have his own wife, and each woman her own husband.
3TO THE WIFE THE HUSBAND THE DEBT GOOD WILL SHOULD FULFILL; LIKEWISE NOW ALSO THE WIFE TO THE HUSBAND. 3The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband.
4THE WIFE <THE> [HER] OWN BODY NOT HAS AUTHORITY OVER BUT THE HUSBAND; LIKEWISE NOW ALSO THE HUSBAND <THE> [HIS] OWN BODY NOT HAS AUTHORITY OVER BUT THE WIFE. 4The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband. Likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife.
5NOT DO DEPRIVE ONE ANOTHER IF SURELY EVEN WHEN BY MUTUAL AGREEMENT FOR A TIME, THAT YOU MAY BE DEVOTED <THE> TO FASTINGS AND <THE> TO PRAYER AND AGAIN TOGETHER THE SAME MAY BE, SO THAT NOT MAY TEMPT YOU <THE> SATAN THROUGH THE LACK OF SELF-CONTROL OF YOU. 5Do not deprive each other, except by mutual consent and for a time, so you may devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again, so that Satan will not tempt you through your lack of self-control.
6THIS NOW I SAY BY WAY OF CONCESSION NOT BY WAY OF COMMAND. 6I say this as a concession, not as a command.
7I WISH NOW ALL MEN TO BE LIKE EVEN MYSELF; BUT EACH [THEIR] OWN HAS GIFT FROM GOD, ONE [HAS] INDEED THIS, ONE HOWEVER THAT. 7I wish that all men were as I am. But each man has his own gift from God; one has this gift, another has that.
8I SAY NOW TO THE UNMARRIED AND TO THE WIDOWS, GOOD FOR THEM IT IS IF THEY SHALL REMAIN AS ALSO I. MYSELF 8Now to the unmarried and widows I say this: It is good for them to remain unmarried, as I am.
9IF HOWEVER NOT THEY HAVE SELF-CONTROL, THEY SHOULD MARRY; BETTER FOR IT IS TO MARRY THAN TO BURN WITH PASSION. 9But if they cannot control themselves, let them marry. For it is better to marry than to burn with passion.
10TO THOSE NOW HAVING MARRIED I GIVE THIS CHARGE — NOT I MYSELF BUT THE LORD — A WIFE FROM A HUSBAND NOT IS TO BE SEPARATED; 10To the married I give this command (not I, but the Lord): A wife must not separate from her husband.
11IF HOWEVER INDEED SHE SHALL BE SEPARATED, SHE SHOULD REMAIN UNMARRIED OR TO THE HUSBAND SHE SHOULD BE RECONCILED; AND A HUSBAND A WIFE NOT IS TO SEND AWAY. 11But if she does, she must remain unmarried or else be reconciled to her husband. And a husband must not divorce his wife.
12TO THE NOW REST SAY I MYSELF — NOT THE LORD: IF ANY BROTHER A WIFE HAS UNBELIEVING AND SHE CONSENTS TO DWELL WITH HIM, NOT HE SHOULD DIVORCE HER; 12To the rest I say this (I, not the Lord): If a brother has an unbelieving wife and she is willing to live with him, he must not divorce her.
13AND A WOMAN IF ANY HAS A HUSBAND UNBELIEVING AND HE CONSENTS TO DWELL WITH HER, NOT SHE SHOULD DIVORCE THE HUSBAND. 13And if a woman has an unbelieving husband and he is willing to live with her, she must not divorce him.
14HAS BEEN SANCTIFIED FOR THE HUSBAND <THE> UNBELIEVING IN THE WIFE, AND HAS BEEN SANCTIFIED THE WIFE <THE> UNBELIEVING IN THE BROTHER; ELSE THEN THE CHILDREN OF YOU UNCLEAN ARE, NOW HOWEVER HOLY THEY ARE. 14For the unbelieving husband is sanctified through his believing wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified through her believing husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean, but now they are holy.
15IF HOWEVER THE UNBELIEVER SEPARATES HIMSELF, HE SHOULD SEPARATE HIMSELF; NOT HAS BEE UNDER BONDAGE THE BROTHER OR THE SISTER IN <THE> SUCH [CASES]; INTO HOWEVER PEACE HAS CALLED YOU <THE> GOD. 15But if the unbeliever leaves, let him go. The believing brother or sister is not bound in such cases. God has called you*NoteCloseSBL, BYZ, and TR us to live in peace.
16HOW FOR KNOW YOU, WIFE, IF THE HUSBAND YOU WILL SAVE? OR HOW KNOW YOU, HUSBAND, IF THE WIFE YOU WILL SAVE? 16How do you know, wife, whether you will save your husband? Or how do you know, husband, whether you will save your wife?
17ONLY EXCEPT TO EACH AS HAS ASSIGNED THE LORD TO EACH AS HAS CALLED <THE> GOD SO HE SHOULD WALK; AND THUS IN THE CHURCHES ALL I PRESCRIBE. Live Your Calling 17Regardless, each one should lead the life that the Lord has assigned to him and to which God has called him. This is what I prescribe in all the churches.
18CIRCUMCISED ANYONE WAS CALLED? NOT HE SHOULD BECOME UNCIRCUMCISED; IN UNCIRCUMCISION HAS BEEN CALLED ANYONE NOT HE SHOULD D BE CIRCUMCISE. 18Was a man already circumcised when he was called? He should not become uncircumcised. Was a man still uncircumcised when called? He should not be circumcised.
19<THE> CIRCUMCISION NO [THING] IS AND <THE> UNCIRCUMCISION NO [THING] IS BUT KEEPING [THE] COMMANDMENTS OF GOD. 19Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing. Keeping God’s commandments is what counts.
20EACH IN THE CALLING IN WHICH HE HAS BEEN CALLED, IN THIS HE SHOULD ABIDE. 20Each one should remain in the situation he was in when he was called.
21SLAVE [BEING] WERE YOU CALLED? NOT YOU SHOULD IT CONCERN; BUT IF EVEN YOU ARE ABLE FREE TO BECOME, RATHER DO TAKE ADVANTAGE. 21Were you a slave when you were called? Do not let it concern you— but if you can gain your freedom, take the opportunity.
22THE [ONE] FOR IN [THE] LORD HAVING BEEN CALLED [BEING] A SLAVE A FREEDMAN OF [THE] LORD IS; LIKEWISE AND THE [ONE] FREE HAVING BEEN CALLED A SLAVE IS OF CHRIST. 22For he who was a slave when he was called by the Lord is the Lord’s freedman. Conversely, he who was a free man when he was called is Christ’s slave.
23WITH A PRICE YOU WERE BOUGHT; NOT DO BECOME SLAVES OF MEN. 23You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of men.
24EACH WHEREIN THAT HE WAS CALLED, BROTHERS, IN THAT HE SHOULD ABIDE WITH <THE> GOD. 24Brothers, each one should remain in the situation he was in when God called him.
25CONCERNING NOW THE VIRGINS A COMMANDMENT OF [THE] LORD NOT I HAVE, JUDGMENT HOWEVER I GIVE AS RECEIVED MERCY FROM [THE] LORD TRUSTWORTHY TO BE. The Unmarried and Widowed 25Now about virgins, I have no command from the Lord, but I give a judgment as one who by the Lord’s mercy is trustworthy.
26I THINK THEREFORE THIS GOOD BEING BECAUSE OF THE BEING PRESENT NECESSITY, THAT [IT IS] GOOD FOR A MAN <THE> IN THE SAME MANNER TO REMAIN. 26Because of the present*NoteCloseOr impending crisis, I think it is good for a man to remain as he is.
27HAVE YOU BEEN BOUND TO A WIFE? NOT DO SEEK TO BE LOOSED; HAVE YOU BEEN LOOSED FROM A WIFE? NOT DO SEEK A WIFE. 27Are you committed to a wife? Do not seek to be released. Are you free of commitment? Do not look for a wife.
28IF HOWEVER ALSO YOU SHALL MARRY, NOT YOU DID SIN; AND IF SHALL MARRY THE VIRGIN, NOT SHE DID SIN; TRIBULATION HOWEVER IN THE FLESH WILL HAVE <THE> SUCH; I MYSELF NOW YOU AM SPARING. 28But if you do marry, you have not sinned. And if a virgin marries, she has not sinned. But those who marry will face troubles in this life, and I want to spare you this.
29THIS NOW I SAY, BROTHERS: THE SEASON SHORTENED IS; <THE> FROM NOW ON IS THAT BOTH THOSE HAVING WIVES AS NONE HAVING MAY BE, 29What I am saying, brothers, is that the time is short. From now on those who have wives should live as if they had none;
30AND THOSE WEEPING AS NOT WEEPING, AND THOSE REJOICING AS NOT REJOICING, AND THOSE BUYING AS NOT POSSESSING, 30those who weep, as if they did not; those who are joyful, as if they were not; those who make a purchase, as if they had nothing;
31AND THOSE USING <THE> WORLD THIS AS NOT USING [IT] AS THEIR OWN. IS PASSING AWAY FOR THE PRESENT FORM OF THE WORLD THIS; 31and those who use the things of this world, as if not dependent on them. For this world in its present form is passing away.
32I DESIRE NOW YOU WITHOUT CONCERN TO BE. THE UNMARRIED MAN CARES FOR THE [THINGS] OF THE LORD, HOW HE MAY PLEASE THE LORD; 32I want you to be free from concern. The unmarried man is concerned about the work of the Lord, how he can please the Lord.
33THE [ONE] HOWEVER HAVING BEEN MARRIED HE CARES FOR THE [THINGS] OF THE WORLD, HOW HE MAY PLEASE THE WIFE, 33But the married man is concerned about the affairs of this world, how he can please his wife,
34AND HAS HE BEEN DIVIDED. AND THE WOMAN <THE> UNMARRIED AND <THE> VIRGIN CARES FOR THE [THINGS] OF THE LORD, THAT SHE MAY BE HOLY BOTH IN BODY AND IN THE SPIRIT; THE [ONE] HOWEVER HAVING BEEN MARRIED SHE CARES FOR THE [THINGS] OF THE WORLD, HOW SHE MAY PLEASE THE HUSBAND. 34and his interests are divided. The unmarried woman or virgin is concerned about the work of the Lord, how she can be holy in both body and spirit. But the married woman is concerned about the affairs of this world, how she can please her husband.
35THIS NOW FOR THE OF YOU YOURSELVES [YOUR] BENEFIT I SAY, NOT THAT A RESTRAINT YOU I MAY PLACE UPON BUT FOR WHAT [IS] SEEMLY AND DEVOTED TO THE LORD WITHOUT DISTRACTION. 35I am saying this for your own good, not to restrict you, but in order to promote proper decorum and undivided devotion to the Lord.
36IF HOWEVER ANYONE TO BE BEHAVING IMPROPERLY TO THE VIRGIN OF HIM SUPPOSES, IF SHE SHALL BE BEYOND YOUTH, AND SO IT OUGHT TO BE, WHAT HE WILLS HE SHOULD DO; NOT HE DOES SIN, THEY SHOULD MARRY. 36However, if someone thinks he is acting inappropriately toward his betrothed, and if she is beyond her youth and they ought to marry,*NoteCloseLiterally and it ought to be so let him do as he wishes; he is not sinning; they should get married.
37HE WHO HOWEVER HAS STOOD IN THE HEART OF HIM FIRM NOT HAVING NECESSITY, AUTHORITY HOWEVER HAVING OVER THE OWN WILL, AND THIS HAS JUDGED IN THE OWN HEART <THE> TO KEEP <THE> HIS OWN VIRGIN, WELL HE WILL DO. 37But the man who is firmly established in his heart and under no constraint, with control over his will and resolve in his heart not to marry the virgin,*NoteCloseLiterally in his heart to keep the virgin or in his heart to keep the betrothed he will do well.
38SO THEN ALSO THE [ONE] NOW GIVING IN MARRIAGE <THE> HIS OWN VIRGIN WELL DOES, AND THE [ONE] NOT GIVING IN MARRIAGE BETTER WILL DO. 38So then, he who marries the virgin does well, but he who does not marry her does even better.
39A WIFE HAS BEEN BOUND TO [THE] LAW FOR AS LONG AS TIME MAY LIVE THE HUSBAND OF HER; IF HOWEVER AND SHALL HAVE DIED THE HUSBAND OF HER FREE SHE IS TO WHOM SHE WILLS TO BE MARRIED, ONLY IN [THE] LORD. 39A wife is bound to her husband as long as he lives. But if her husband dies, she is free to marry anyone she wishes, as long as he belongs to the Lord.*NoteCloseLiterally she is free to be married to whom she wishes, only in the Lord
40MORE BLESSED HOWEVER SHE IS IF IN THE SAME MANNER SHE SHALL REMAIN, ACCORDING TO <THE> MY JUDGMENT; I THINK NOW MYSELF ALSO [THE] SPIRIT OF GOD TO HAVE. 40In my judgment, however, she is happier if she remains as she is. And I think that I too have the Spirit of God.
