29AND IT CAME UP AND IT CAME OUT A CHARIOT FROM EGYPT FOR SIX HUNDRED<S> SILVER AND A HORSE FOR FIFTY AND ONE HUNDRED AND THUS TO ALL [THE] KINGS OF THE HITTITES AND TO [THE] KINGS OF ARAM BY HAND THEIR THEY BROUGHT [THEM] OUT 29A chariot could be imported from Egypt for six hundred shekels of silver,*NoteClose600 shekels is approximately 15.1 pounds or 6.8 kilograms of silver. and a horse for a hundred and fifty.*NoteClose150 shekels is approximately 3.8 pounds or 1.7 kilograms of silver. Likewise, they exported them to all the kings of the Hittites and to the kings of Aram.
1AND THE KING SOLOMON HE LOVED WOMEN FOREIGN MANY AND <OBJ.> [THE] DAUGHTER OF PHARAOH MOABITE [WOMEN] AMMONITE [WOMEN] EDOMITE [WOMEN] SIDONIAN [WOMEN] HITTITE [WOMEN] Solomon’s Foreign Wives 1King Solomon, however, loved many foreign women along with the daughter of Pharaoh— women of Moab, Ammon, Edom, and Sidon, as well as Hittite women.
2FROM THE NATIONS WHICH HE HAD SAID YAHWEH TO [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL NOT YOU MUST GO AMONG THEM AND THEY NOT THEY WILL GO AMONG YOU TRULY THEY WILL TURN ASIDE <OBJ.> HEART YOUR AFTER GODS THEIR TO THEM HE CLEAVED SOLOMON TO LOVE [THEM] 2These women were from the nations about which the LORD had told the Israelites, “You must not intermarry with them for surely they will turn your hearts after their gods.” Yet Solomon clung to these women in love.
3AND IT BELONGED TO HIM WIVES NOBLE LADIES SEVEN HUNDRED<S> AND CONCUBINES THREE HUNDRED<S> AND THEY TURNED ASIDE WIVES HIS <OBJ.> HEART HIS 3He had seven hundred wives of royal birth and three hundred concubines— and his wives turned his heart away.
4AND IT WAS TO [THE] TIME OF [THE] OLD AGE OF SOLOMON WIVES HIS THEY TURNED ASIDE <OBJ.> HEART HIS AFTER GODS OTHER AND NOT IT WAS HEART HIS COMPLETE WITH YAHWEH GOD HIS LIKE [THE] HEART OF DAVID FATHER HIS 4For when Solomon grew old, his wives turned his heart after other gods, and he was not wholeheartedly devoted to the LORD his God, as his father David had been.
5AND HE WALKED SOLOMON AFTER ASTARTE [THE] GOD OF [THE] SIDONIANS AND AFTER MILCOM [THE] DETESTABLE THING OF [THE] AMMONITES 5Solomon followed Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians and Milcom*NoteCloseMilcom is a variant of Molech; also in verse 33; see verse 7 and Leviticus 18:21. the abomination of the Ammonites.
6AND HE DID SOLOMON THE EVIL IN [THE] EYES OF YAHWEH AND NOT HE FILLED AFTER YAHWEH LIKE DAVID FATHER HIS 6So Solomon did evil in the sight of the LORD; unlike his father David, he did not follow the LORD completely.
7THEN HE BUILT SOLOMON A HIGH PLACE FOR CHEMOSH [THE] DETESTABLE THING OF MOAB ON THE MOUNTAIN WHICH [IS] ON [THE] FACE OF JERUSALEM AND FOR MOLECH [THE] DETESTABLE THING OF [THE] PEOPLE OF AMMON 7At that time on a hill east of Jerusalem, Solomon built a high place for Chemosh the abomination of Moab and for Molech the abomination of the Ammonites.
8AND THUS HE DID FOR ALL WIVES HIS <THE> FOREIGN [WHO] MADE SMOKE AND [WHO] SACRIFICED TO GODS THEIR 8He did the same for all his foreign wives, who burned incense and sacrificed to their gods.
9AND HE WAS ANGRY YAHWEH WITH SOLOMON FOR IT HAD TURNED ASIDE HEART HIS FROM WITH YAHWEH [THE] GOD OF ISRAEL WHO <HE> HAD APPEARED TO HIM TWO TIMES God’s Anger against Solomon 9Now the LORD grew angry with Solomon, because his heart had turned away from the LORD, the God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice.
10AND HE HAD COMMANDED TO HIM ON THE MATTER <THE> THIS TO NOT TO WALK AFTER GODS OTHER AND NOT HE OBSERVED <OBJ.> [THAT] WHICH HE HAD COMMANDED YAHWEH 10Although He had warned Solomon explicitly not to follow other gods, Solomon did not keep the LORD’s command.
11AND HE SAID YAHWEH TO SOLOMON BECAUSE THAT IT HAS BEEN THIS WITH YOU AND NOT YOU HAVE OBSERVED COVENANT MY AND STATUTES MY WHICH I COMMANDED TO YOU CERTAINLY <TO TEAR> I WILL TEAR AWAY <OBJ.> THE KINGDOM FROM WITH <THE> YOU AND I WILL GIVE IT TO SERVANT YOUR 11Then the LORD said to Solomon, “Because you have done this and have not kept My covenant and My statutes, which I have commanded you, I will tear the kingdom away from you and give it to your servant.
12ONLY IN DAYS YOUR NOT I WILL DO IT FOR [THE] SAKE OF DAVID FATHER YOUR FROM [THE] HAND OF SON YOUR I WILL TEAR AWAY IT 12Nevertheless, for the sake of your father David, I will not do it during your lifetime; I will tear it out of the hand of your son.
13ONLY <OBJ.> ALL THE KINGDOM NOT I WILL TEAR AWAY A TRIBE ONE I WILL GIVE TO SON YOUR FOR [THE] SAKE OF DAVID SERVANT MY AND FOR [THE] SAKE OF JERUSALEM WHICH I HAVE CHOSEN 13Yet I will not tear the whole kingdom away from him. I will give one tribe to your son for the sake of My servant David and for the sake of Jerusalem, which I have chosen.”
14AND HE RAISED UP YAHWEH AN ADVERSARY TO SOLOMON <OBJ.> HADAD THE EDOMITE [WAS] ONE OF [THE] OFFSPRING THE KING HE IN EDOM Hadad’s Return 14Then the LORD raised up against Solomon an adversary, Hadad the Edomite, from the royal line of Edom.
15AND IT WAS WHEN WAS DAVID <OBJ.> EDOM WHEN WENT UP JOAB [THE] COMMANDER OF THE ARMY TO BURY <OBJ.> THE [ONES] SLAIN AND HE STRUCK DOWN EVERY MALE IN EDOM 15Earlier, when David was in Edom, Joab the commander of the army had gone to bury the dead and had struck down every male in Edom.
16FOR SIX MONTHS HE REMAINED THERE JOAB AND ALL ISRAEL UNTIL HE HAD CUT OFF EVERY MALE IN EDOM 16Joab and all Israel had stayed there six months, until he had killed every male in Edom.
17AND HE FLED HADAD HE AND PEOPLE EDOMITE SOME OF [THE] SERVANTS OF FATHER HIS WITH HIM TO GO EGYPT AND HADAD [WAS] A YOUTH YOUNG 17But Hadad, still just a young boy, had fled to Egypt, along with some Edomites who were servants of his father.
18AND THEY AROSE FROM MIDIAN AND THEY WENT PARAN AND THEY TOOK MEN WITH THEM FROM PARAN AND THEY WENT EGYPT TO PHARAOH [THE] KING OF EGYPT AND HE GAVE TO HIM A HOUSE AND FOOD HE ASSIGNED TO HIM AND LAND HE GAVE TO HIM 18Hadad and his men set out from Midian and went to Paran. They took men from Paran with them and went to Egypt, to Pharaoh king of Egypt, who gave Hadad a house and land and provided him with food.
19AND HE FOUND HADAD FAVOR IN [THE] EYES OF PHARAOH EXCEEDINGLY AND HE GAVE TO HIM A WIFE <OBJ.> [THE] SISTER OF OWN WIFE HIS [THE] SISTER OF TAHPENES THE QUEEN 19There Hadad found such great favor in the sight of Pharaoh that he gave to him in marriage the sister of Queen Tahpenes, his own wife.
20AND SHE BORE TO HIM [THE] SISTER OF TAHPENES <OBJ.> GENUBATH SON HIS AND SHE WEANED HIM TAHPENES IN [THE] MIDST OF [THE] HOUSEHOLD OF PHARAOH AND HE WAS GENUBATH [THE] HOUSE OF PHARAOH IN AMONG [THE] SONS OF PHARAOH 20And the sister of Tahpenes bore Hadad a son named Genubath. Tahpenes herself weaned him in Pharaoh’s palace, and Genubath lived there among the sons of Pharaoh.
21AND HADAD HE HEARD IN EGYPT THAT HE HAD LAIN DOWN DAVID WITH ANCESTORS HIS AND THAT HE HAD DIED JOAB [THE] COMMANDER OF THE ARMY AND HE SAID HADAD TO PHARAOH LET GO ME SO I MAY GO TO OWN LAND MY 21When Hadad heard in Egypt that David had rested with his fathers and that Joab, the commander of the army, was dead, he said to Pharaoh, “Let me go, that I may return to my own country.”
22AND HE SAID TO HIM PHARAOH THAT WHAT? [ARE] YOU LACKING WITH ME AND HERE YOU [ARE] SEEKING TO GO TO OWN LAND YOUR AND HE SAID IN- DEED REALLY <LET GO> YOU WILL LET GO ME 22But Pharaoh asked him, What have you lacked here with me that you suddenly want to go back to your own country?” “Nothing,” Hadad replied, “but please let me go
23AND HE RAISED UP GOD TO HIM AN ADVERSARY <OBJ.> REZON [THE] SON OF ELIADA WHO HE HAD FLED FROM WITH HADADEZER [THE] KING OF ZOBAH MASTER<S> HIS Rezon’s Hostility 23And God raised up against Solomon another adversary, Rezon the son of Eliada who had fled from his master, Hadadezer king of Zobah,
24AND HE GATHERED WITH HIM MEN AND HE WAS [THE] LEADER OF A MARAUDING BAND WHEN KILLED DAVID <OBJ.> THEM AND THEY WENT DAMASCUS AND THEY DWELT IN IT AND THEY REIGNED IN DAMASCUS 24and had gathered men to himself. When David killed the Zobaites, Rezon captained a band of raiders and went to Damascus, where they settled and gained control
25AND HE WAS AN ADVERSARY OF ISRAEL ALL [THE] DAYS OF SOLOMON AND <OBJ.> <THE> HARM WHICH HADAD AND HE LOATHED <IN> ISRAEL AND HE REIGNED OVER ARAM 25Rezon was Israel’s enemy throughout the days of Solomon, adding to the trouble caused by Hadad. So Rezon ruled over Aram with hostility toward Israel.
26AND JEROBOAM [THE] SON OF NEBAT AN EPHRATHITE FROM <THE> ZEREDAH AND [THE] NAME OF MOTHER HIS [WAS] ZERUAH A WOMAN A WIDOW A SERVANT OF SOLOMON AND HE RAISED A HAND ON THE KING Jeroboam’s Rebellion 26Now Jeroboam son of Nebat was an Ephraimite from Zeredah whose mother was a widow named Zeruah. Jeroboam was a servant of Solomon, but he rebelled against the king,
27AND THIS [IS] THE REASON WHY HE RAISED A HAND ON THE KING SOLOMON HE BUILT <OBJ.> THE MILLO HE CLOSED UP <OBJ.> [THE] BREACH OF [THE] CITY OF DAVID FATHER HIS 27and this is the account of his rebellion against the king. Solomon had built the supporting terraces*NoteCloseHebrew the Millo and repaired the gap in the wall of the city of his father David.
28AND THE MAN JEROBOAM [WAS] A MIGHTY [MAN] OF STRENGTH AND HE SAW SOLOMON <OBJ.> THE YOUNG MAN THAT [WAS] DOING WORK HE AND HE APPOINTED <OBJ.> HIM TO ALL [THE] FORCED LABOR OF [THE] HOUSE OF JOSEPH 28Now Jeroboam was a mighty man of valor. So when Solomon noticed that the young man was industrious, he put him in charge of the whole labor force of the house of Joseph.
29AND IT WAS AT THE TIME <THE> THAT AND JEROBOAM HE HAD GONE OUT FROM JERUSALEM AND HE FOUND <OBJ.> HIM AHIJAH <THE> SHILONITE THE PROPHET ON THE WAY AND HE [WAS] COVERING HIMSELF WITH A CLOAK NEW AND [THE] TWO OF THEM TO ALONE THEM [WERE] IN THE OPEN COUNTRY 29During that time, the prophet Ahijah the Shilonite met Jeroboam on the road as he was going out of Jerusalem. Now Ahijah had wrapped himself in a new cloak, and the two of them were alone in the open field.
30AND HE SEIZED AHIJAH <IN> THE CLOAK <THE> NEW WHICH [WAS] ON HIM AND HE TORE IT TWO [PLUS] TEN PIECES 30And Ahijah took hold of the new cloak he was wearing, tore it into twelve pieces,
31AND HE SAID TO JEROBOAM TAKE FOR YOURSELF TEN PIECES FOR THUS HE SAYS YAHWEH [THE] GOD OF ISRAEL HERE I [AM] ABOUT TO TEAR <OBJ.> THE KINGDOM FROM [THE] HAND OF SOLOMON AND I WILL GIVE TO YOU <OBJ.> TEN THE TRIBES 31and said to Jeroboam, “Take ten pieces for yourself, for this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘Behold, I will tear the kingdom out of the hand of Solomon, and I will give you ten tribes.
32AND THE TRIBE <THE> ONE IT WILL BELONG TO HIM FOR [THE] SAKE OF SERVANT MY DAVID AND FOR [THE] SAKE OF JERUSALEM THE CITY WHICH I HAVE CHOSEN <IN> IT FROM ALL [THE] TRIBES OF ISRAEL 32But one tribe will remain for the sake of My servant David and for the sake of Jerusalem, the city I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel.
33BECAUSE THAT THEY HAVE FORSAKEN ME AND THEY HAVE BOWED DOWN TO ASTARTE [THE] GOD OF [THE] SIDONIANS TO CHEMOSH [THE] GOD OF MOAB AND TO MILCOM [THE] GOD OF [THE] PEOPLE OF AMMON AND NOT THEY HAVE WALKED IN WAYS MY BY DOING THE RIGHT IN VIEW MY AND STATUTES MY AND JUDGMENTS MY LIKE DAVID FATHER HIS 33For they have*NoteCloseHebrew; LXX, Syriac, and Vulgate he has; twice in this verse forsaken Me to worship Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, Chemosh the god of the Moabites, and Milcom the god of the Ammonites. They have not walked in My ways, nor done what is right in My eyes, nor kept My statutes and judgments, as Solomon’s father David did.
34AND NOT I WILL TAKE <OBJ.> ALL THE KINGDOM FROM HAND HIS FOR RULER I WILL MAKE HIM ALL [THE] DAYS OF LIFE HIS FOR [THE] SAKE OF DAVID SERVANT MY WHOM I CHOSE <OBJ.> HIM WHO HE OBSERVED COMMANDMENTS MY AND STATUTES MY 34Nevertheless, I will not take the whole kingdom out of Solomon’s hand, because I have made him ruler all the days of his life for the sake of David My servant, whom I chose because he kept My commandments and statutes.
35AND I WILL TAKE THE KINGSHIP FROM [THE] HAND OF SON HIS AND I WILL GIVE IT TO YOU <OBJ.> [THE] TEN THE TRIBES 35But I will take ten tribes of the kingdom from the hand of his son and give them to you.
36AND TO SON HIS I WILL GIVE A TRIBE ONE SO AS TO BELONG A LAMP TO DAVID SERVANT MY ALL THE DAYS <TO> BEFORE ME IN JERUSALEM THE CITY WHICH I HAVE CHOSEN FOR MYSELF TO PUT NAME MY THERE 36I will give one tribe to his son, so that My servant David will always have a lamp before Me in Jerusalem, the city where I chose to put My Name.
37AND <OBJ.> YOU I WILL TAKE AND YOU WILL REIGN OVER ALL THAT IT WILL DESIRE SELF YOUR AND YOU WILL BE KING OVER ISRAEL 37But as for you, I will take you, and you shall reign over all that your heart desires, and you will be king over Israel.
38AND IT WILL BE IF YOU WILL LISTEN TO <OBJ.> ALL THAT I WILL COMMAND YOU AND YOU WILL WALK IN WAYS MY AND YOU WILL DO THE RIGHT IN VIEW MY BY OBSERVING STATUTES MY AND COMMANDMENTS MY JUST AS HE DID DAVID SERVANT MY AND I WILL BE WITH YOU AND I WILL BUILD FOR YOU A HOUSE ENDURING JUST AS I BUILT FOR DAVID AND I WILL GIVE TO YOU <OBJ.> ISRAEL 38If you listen to all that I command you, walk in My ways, and do what is right in My sight in order to keep My statutes and commandments as My servant David did, then I will be with you. I will build you a lasting dynasty just as I built for David, and I will give Israel to you.
39SO I MAY AFFLICTED <OBJ.> [THE] OFFSPRING OF DAVID ON ACCOUNT OF THIS NEVERTHELESS NOT ALL THE DAYS 39Because of this, I will humble David’s descendants— but not forever
40AND HE SOUGHT SOLOMON TO PUT TO DEATH <OBJ.> JEROBOAM AND HE AROSE JEROBOAM AND HE FLED EGYPT TO SHISHAK [THE] KING OF EGYPT AND HE WAS IN EGYPT UNTIL [THE] DEATH OF SOLOMON 40Solomon therefore sought to kill Jeroboam. But Jeroboam arose and fled to Egypt, to Shishak king of Egypt, where he remained until the death of Solomon.
41AND [THE] REST OF [THE] MATTERS OF SOLOMON AND ALL THAT HE DID AND WISDOM HIS ¿ NOT [ARE] THEY WRITTEN ON [THE] SCROLL OF [THE] MATTERS OF SOLOMON The Death of Solomon (2 Chronicles 9:29–31) 41As for the rest of the acts of Solomon— all that he did, as well as his wisdom— are they not written in the Book of the Acts of Solomon?
42AND THE DAYS WHICH HE REIGNED SOLOMON IN JERUSALEM OVER ALL ISRAEL [WERE] FORTY YEAR[S] 42Thus the time that Solomon reigned in Jerusalem over all Israel was forty years.
43AND HE LAY DOWN SOLOMON WITH ANCESTORS HIS AND HE WAS BURIED IN [THE] CITY OF DAVID FATHER HIS AND HE BECAME KING REHOBOAM SON HIS IN PLACE OF HIM 43And Solomon rested with his fathers and was buried in the city of his father David. And his son Rehoboam reigned in his place.
