31AND HE LAY DOWN SOLOMON WITH ANCESTORS HIS AND PEOPLE BURIED HIM IN [THE] CITY OF DAVID FATHER HIS AND HE BECAME KING REHOBOAM SON HIS IN PLACE OF HIM 31And Solomon rested with his fathers and was buried in the city of his father David. And his son Rehoboam reigned in his place.
1AND HE WENT REHOBOAM SHECHEM TOWARDS FOR SHECHEM THEY HAD COME ALL ISRAEL TO MAKE KING <OBJ.> HIM Rebellion against Rehoboam (1 Kings 12:1–15) 1Then Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had gone there to make him king.
2AND IT WAS WHEN HEARD JEROBOAM [THE] SON OF NEBAT AND HE [WAS] IN EGYPT WHERE HE HAD FLED FROM BEFORE SOLOMON THE KING AND HE RETURNED JEROBOAM FROM EGYPT 2When Jeroboam son of Nebat heard about this, he returned from Egypt, where he had fled from King Solomon.
3AND PEOPLE SENT AND THEY SUMMONED <TO> HIM AND HE CAME JEROBOAM AND ALL ISRAEL AND THEY SPOKE TO REHOBOAM <TO> SAYING 3So they sent for Jeroboam and he and all Israel came to Rehoboam and said,
4FATHER YOUR HE MADE HARD <OBJ.> YOKE OUR AND THEREFORE LIGHTEN SOME OF [THE] LABOR OF FATHER YOUR <THE> HARD AND SOME OF YOKE HIS <THE> HEAVY WHICH HE PUT ON US AND WE WILL SERVE YOU 4“Your father put a heavy yoke on us. But now you must lighten the burden of your father’s service and the heavy yoke he put on us, and we will serve you.”
5AND HE SAID TO THEM AGAIN THREE DAYS AND RETURN TO ME AND IT WENT THE PEOPLE 5Rehoboam answered, “Come back to me in three days.” So the people departed.
6AND HE CONSULTED THE KING REHOBOAM WITH THE ELDERS WHO THEY HAD BEEN STANDING <TO> BEFORE SOLOMON FATHER HIS WHEN WAS HE ALIVE <TO> SAYING HOW? [ARE] YOU COUNSELING TO BRING BACK TO THE PEOPLE <THE> THIS WORD 6Then King Rehoboam consulted with the elders who had served his father Solomon during his lifetime. “How do you advise me to respond to these people?” he asked.
7AND THEY SPOKE TO HIM <TO> SAYING IF YOU WILL BECOME <INTO> GOOD TO THE PEOPLE <THE> THIS AND YOU WILL BE FAVORABLE TO THEM AND YOU WILL SPEAK TO THEM WORDS KIND AND THEY WILL BE OF YOU SERVANTS ALL THE DAYS 7They replied “If you will be kind to these people and please them by speaking kind words to them, they will be your servants forever
8AND HE ABANDONED <OBJ.> [THE] COUNSEL OF THE ELDERS WHICH THEY HAD COUNSELED HIM AND HE CONSULTED WITH THE YOUTHS WHO THEY HAD GROWN UP WITH HIM WHO STOOD <TO> BEFORE HIM 8But Rehoboam rejected the advice of the elders instead, he consulted the young men who had grown up with him and served him.
9AND HE SAID TO THEM WHAT? [ARE] YOU COUNSELING AND WE MAY BRING BACK WORD <OBJ.> THE PEOPLE <THE> THIS WHO THEY HAVE SPOKEN TO ME <TO> SAYING LIGHTEN SOME OF THE YOKE WHICH HE PUT FATHER YOUR ON US 9He asked them, “What message do you advise that we send back to these people who have spoken to me, saying, ‘Lighten the yoke your father put on us’?”
10AND THEY SPOKE WITH HIM THE YOUTHS WHO THEY HAD GROWN UP WITH HIM <TO> SAYING THUS YOU WILL SAY TO THE PEOPLE WHICH THEY HAVE SPOKEN TO YOU <TO> SAYING FATHER YOUR HE MADE HEAVY <OBJ.> YOKE OUR AND YOU LIGHTEN FROM ON <THE> US THUS YOU WILL SAY TO THEM LITTLE FINGER MY IT IS THICK MORE THAN [THE] LOINS OF FATHER MY 10The young men who had grown up with him replied, “This is how you should answer these people who said to you, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, but you must make it lighter This is what you should tell them: ‘My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist!
11AND THEREFORE FATHER MY HE LOADED ON YOU A YOKE HEAVY AND I I WILL ADD TO YOKE YOUR FATHER MY HE DISCIPLINED <OBJ.> YOU WITH <THE> WHIPS AND I WITH <THE> SCORPIONS 11Whereas my father burdened you with a heavy yoke, I will add to your yoke. Whereas my father scourged you with whips, I will scourge you with scorpions.’”
12AND HE CAME JEROBOAM AND ALL THE PEOPLE TO REHOBOAM ON THE DAY <THE> THIRD JUST AS HE HAD SPOKEN THE KING <TO> SAYING RETURN TO ME ON THE DAY <THE> THIRD 12After three days, Jeroboam and all the people returned to Rehoboam, since the king had said, “Come back to me on the third day.”
13AND HE ANSWERED THEM THE KING HARD AND HE ABANDONED THE KING REHOBOAM <OBJ.> [THE] COUNSEL OF THE ELDERS 13And the king answered them harshly. King Rehoboam rejected the advice of the elders
14AND HE SPOKE TO THEM ACCORDING TO [THE] COUNSEL OF THE YOUNG MEN <TO> SAYING I WILL MAKE HEAVY <OBJ.> YOKE YOUR AND I I WILL ADD TO IT FATHER MY HE DISCIPLINED <OBJ.> YOU WITH <THE> WHIPS AND I WITH <THE> SCORPIONS 14and spoke to them as the young men had advised, saying, “Whereas my father made your yoke heavy,*NoteCloseLXX and many Hebrew manuscripts (see also 1 Kings 12:14); MT Whereas I made your yoke heavy I will add to your yoke. Whereas my father scourged you with whips, I will scourge you with scorpions.”
15AND NOT HE LISTENED THE KING TO THE PEOPLE FOR IT WAS A TURN FROM WITH <THE> GOD SO AS TO ESTABLISH YAHWEH <OBJ.> WORD HIS WHICH HE HAD SPOKEN BY [THE] HAND OF AHIJAH THE SHILONITE TO JEROBOAM [THE] SON OF NEBAT 15So the king did not listen to the people, and indeed this turn of events was from God, in order that the LORD might fulfill the word that He had spoken through Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam son of Nebat.
16AND ALL ISRAEL THAT NOT HE HAD LISTENED THE KING TO THEM AND THEY BROUGHT BACK THE PEOPLE <OBJ.> THE KING <TO> SAYING WHAT? [BELONGS] TO US PORTION IN DAVID AND NOT AN INHERITANCE IN [THE] SON OF JESSE EVERYONE TO TENTS YOUR O ISRAEL NOW CONSIDER OWN HOUSE YOUR O DAVID AND IT WENT ALL ISRAEL TO TENTS ITS The Kingdom Divided (1 Kings 12:16–19) 16When all Israel saw that the king had refused to listen to them, they answered*NoteCloseSyriac, Vulgate, and many Hebrew manuscripts; MT And all Israel, since the king had refused to listen to them, answered. the king: “What portion do we have in David, and what inheritance in the son of Jesse? To your tents, O Israel! Look now to your own house, O David!” So all the Israelites went home,
17AND [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL WHO WERE DWELLING IN [THE] CITIES OF JUDAH AND HE REIGNED OVER THEM REHOBOAM 17but Rehoboam still reigned over the Israelites living in the cities of Judah.
18AND HE SENT THE KING REHOBOAM <OBJ.> HADORAM WHO [WAS] OVER THE FORCED LABOR AND THEY STONED <IN> HIM [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL STONE[S] AND HE DIED AND THE KING REHOBOAM HE PROVED HIMSELF STRONG TO GO UP IN THE CHARIOT TO FLEE JERUSALEM 18Then King Rehoboam sent out Hadoram,*NoteCloseHadoram is a variant of Adoram and Adoniram; see 2 Samuel 20:24 and 1 Kings 4:6. who was in charge of the forced labor, but the Israelites stoned him to death. And King Rehoboam mounted his chariot in haste and escaped to Jerusalem.
19AND THEY HAVE REBELLED ISRAEL AGAINST [THE] HOUSE OF DAVID UNTIL THE DAY <THE> THIS 19So to this day Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David.
