21AND THEY SENT MESSENGERS TO [THE] INHABITANTS OF KIRIATH JEARIM <TO> SAYING THEY HAVE BROUGHT BACK [THE] PHILISTINES <OBJ.> [THE] ARK OF YAHWEH COME DOWN TAKE UP <OBJ.> IT TO YOU 21So they sent messengers to the people of Kiriath-jearim, saying, “The Philistines have returned the ark of the LORD. Come down and take it up with you.”
1AND THEY CAME [THE] PEOPLE OF KIRIATH JEARIM AND THEY TOOK UP <OBJ.> [THE] ARK OF YAHWEH AND THEY BROUGHT <OBJ.> IT TO [THE] HOUSE OF ABINADAB ON THE HILL AND <OBJ.> ELEAZAR SON HIS THEY CONSECRATED TO KEEP <OBJ.> [THE] ARK OF YAHWEH Samuel Subdues the Philistines 1Then the men of Kiriath-jearim came for the ark of the LORD and took it into Abinadab’s house on the hill. And they consecrated his son Eleazar to guard the ark of the LORD.
2AND IT WAS FROM [THE] DAY DWELT THE ARK AT KIRIATH JEARIM AND THEY INCREASED THE DAYS AND THEY WERE TWENTY YEAR[S] AND THEY MOURNED ALL [THE] HOUSE OF ISRAEL AFTER YAHWEH 2And from that day a long time passed, twenty years in all, as the ark remained at Kiriath-jearim. And all the house of Israel mournfully sought the LORD.
3AND HE SAID SAMUEL TO ALL [THE] HOUSE OF ISRAEL <TO> SAYING IF WITH ALL HEART YOUR YOU [ARE] TURNING BACK TO YAHWEH REMOVE <OBJ.> [THE] GODS OF <THE> FOREIGNNESS FROM AMONG YOU AND THE ASHTAROTH AND DIRECT HEART YOUR TO YAHWEH AND SERVE HIM TO ONLY HIM SO MAY HE DELIVER <OBJ.> YOU FROM [THE] HAND OF [THE] PHILISTINES 3Then Samuel said to all the house of Israel “If you are returning to the LORD with all your hearts, then put away the foreign gods and Ashtoreths among you, prepare your hearts for the LORD, and serve Him only. And He will deliver you from the hand of the Philistines.”
4AND THEY REMOVED [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL <OBJ.> THE BAALS AND <OBJ.> THE ASHTAROTH AND THEY SERVED <OBJ.> YAHWEH TO ONLY HIM 4So the Israelites put away the Baals and Ashtoreths and served only the LORD.
5AND HE SAID SAMUEL GATHER <OBJ.> ALL ISRAEL <THE> MIZPAH TOWARDS SO I MAY PRAY FOR YOU TO YAHWEH 5Then Samuel said, “Gather all Israel to Mizpah, and I will pray to the LORD on your behalf.”
6AND THEY GATHERED TOGETHER <THE> MIZPAH TOWARDS AND THEY DREW WATER AND THEY POURED [IT] OUT <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH AND THEY FASTED ON THE DAY <THE> THAT AND THEY SAID THERE WE HAVE SINNED TO YAHWEH AND HE JUDGED SAMUEL <OBJ.> [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL AT <THE> MIZPAH 6When they had gathered at Mizpah, they drew water and poured it out before the LORD. On that day they fasted, and there they confessed, “We have sinned against the LORD.” And Samuel judged*NoteCloseOr governed or led; similarly in verses 15, 16, and 17 the Israelites at Mizpah.
7AND THEY HEARD [THE] PHILISTINES THAT THEY HAD GATHERED TOGETHER [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL <THE> MIZPAH TOWARDS AND THEY WENT UP [THE] RULERS OF [THE] PHILISTINES AGAINST ISRAEL AND THEY HEARD [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL AND THEY WERE AFRAID OF <THE FACE OF> [THE] PHILISTINES 7When the Philistines heard that the Israelites had gathered at Mizpah, their rulers marched up toward Israel. And when the Israelites learned of this, they feared the Philistines
8AND THEY SAID [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL TO SAMUEL MAY NOT YOU KEEP SILENT FROM US FROM CRYING OUT TO YAHWEH GOD OUR SO HE MAY DELIVER US FROM [THE] HAND OF [THE] PHILISTINES 8and said to Samuel, “Do not stop crying out to the LORD our God for us, that He may save us from the hand of the Philistines.”
9AND HE TOOK SAMUEL A LAMB OF MILK ONE AND HE OFFERED UP IT A BURNT OFFERING A WHOLE OFFERING TO YAHWEH AND HE CRIED OUT SAMUEL TO YAHWEH FOR ISRAEL AND HE ANSWERED HIM YAHWEH 9Then Samuel took a suckling lamb and offered it as a whole burnt offering to the LORD. He cried out to the LORD on behalf of Israel, and the LORD answered him.
10AND HE WAS SAMUEL OFFERING UP THE BURNT OFFERING AND [THE] PHILISTINES THEY DREW NEAR FOR <THE> BATTLE IN ISRAEL AND HE THUNDERED YAHWEH WITH A SOUND GREAT ON THE DAY <THE> THAT ON [THE] PHILISTINES AND HE ROUTED THEM AND THEY WERE DEFEATED <TO> BEFORE ISRAEL 10As the Philistines drew near to fight against Israel, Samuel was offering up the burnt offering. But that day the LORD thundered loudly against the Philistines and threw them into such confusion that they fled before Israel.
11AND THEY WENT OUT [THE] MEN OF ISRAEL FROM <THE> MIZPAH AND THEY PURSUED <OBJ.> [THE] PHILISTINES AND THEY STRUCK DOWN THEM TO FROM BELOW TO BETH CAR 11Then the men of Israel charged out of Mizpah and pursued the Philistines, striking them down all the way to an area below Beth-car.
12AND HE TOOK SAMUEL A STONE ONE AND HE PUT [IT] BETWEEN <THE> MIZPAH AND BETWEEN <THE> SHEN AND HE CALLED <OBJ.> NAME ITS EBEN- -EZER AND HE SAID UNTIL NOW HE HAS HELPED US YAHWEH 12Afterward, Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen.*NoteCloseHebrew; LXX and Syriac Jeshanah He named it Ebenezer,*NoteCloseEbenezer means stone of help. saying, “Thus far the LORD has helped us.”
13AND THEY WERE SUBDUED THE PHILISTINES AND NOT THEY REPEATED AGAIN TO COME IN [THE] TERRITORY OF ISRAEL AND IT WAS [THE] HAND OF YAHWEH ON THE PHILISTINES ALL [THE] DAYS OF SAMUEL 13So the Philistines were subdued, and they stopped invading the territory of Israel. And the hand of the LORD was against the Philistines all the days of Samuel.
14AND THEY WENT BACK THE CITIES WHICH THEY HAD TAKEN [THE] PHILISTINES FROM WITH ISRAEL TO ISRAEL FROM EKRON AND TO GATH AND <OBJ.> TERRITORY THEIR HE DELIVERED ISRAEL FROM [THE] HAND OF [THE] PHILISTINES AND IT WAS PEACE BETWEEN ISRAEL AND BETWEEN THE AMORITE[S] 14The cities from Ekron to Gath, which the Philistines had taken were restored to Israel, who also delivered the surrounding territory from the hand of the Philistines. And there was peace between the Israelites and the Amorites.
15AND HE JUDGED SAMUEL <OBJ.> ISRAEL ALL [THE] DAYS OF LIFE HIS 15So Samuel judged Israel all the days of his life.
16AND HE WENT AS OFTEN AS A YEAR IN A YEAR AND HE WENT ROUND BETH- -EL AND <THE> GILGAL AND <THE> MIZPAH AND HE JUDGED <OBJ.> ISRAEL <OBJ.> ALL THE PLACES <THE> THESE 16Every year he would go on a circuit from Bethel to Gilgal to Mizpah, judging Israel in all these places.
17AND RETURN HIS [WAS] <THE> RAMAH TOWARDS FOR [WAS] THERE HOUSE HIS AND THERE HE JUDGED <OBJ.> ISRAEL AND HE BUILT THERE AN ALTAR TO YAHWEH 17Then he would return to Ramah because his home was there, and there he judged Israel and built an altar to the LORD.
