10AND TO AWAIT THE SON OF HIM FROM THE HEAVENS, WHOM HE RAISED OUT FROM THE DEAD, JESUS WHO IS DELIVERING US FROM THE WRATH WHICH IS COMING. 10and to await His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead— Jesus our deliverer from the coming wrath.
1YOU YOURSELVES FOR KNOW, BROTHERS, THE COMING OF US <THE> TO YOU THAT NOT IN VAIN HAS BEEN; Paul’s Ministry 1You yourselves know, brothers, that our visit to you was not in vain.
2BUT AND HAVING PREVIOUSLY SUFFERED AND HAVING BEEN MISTREATED EVEN AS YOU KNOW, IN PHILIPPI, WE HAD BOLDNESS IN THE GOD OF US TO SPEAK TO YOU THE GOSPEL <THE> OF GOD AMID MUCH CONFLICT. 2As you are aware, we had already endured suffering and shameful treatment in Philippi. But in the face of strong opposition, we were bold in our God to speak to you the gospel of God.
3<THE> FOR THE EXHORTATION OF US [IS] NOT OF ERROR NOR OF IMPURITY NOR IN TRICKERY; 3For our appeal does not arise from deceit or ulterior motives or trickery.
4BUT EVEN AS WE HAVE BEEN APPROVED BY <THE> GOD TO BE ENTRUSTED WITH THE GOSPEL, SO WE SPEAK, NOT AS MEN PLEASING BUT <THE> AS GOD WHO IS EXAMINING THE HEARTS OF US. 4Instead, we speak as those approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, not in order to please men but God, who examines our hearts.
5NEVER FOR AT ANY TIME WITH WORD OF FLATTERY WERE WE, EVEN AS YOU KNOW, NOR WITH A PRETEXT FOR GREED — GOD [IS] WITNESS — 5As you know, we never used words of flattery or any pretext for greed. God is our witness!
6NOR SEEKING FROM MEN GLORY NOR FROM YOU NOR FROM OTHERS, 6Nor did we seek praise from you or from anyone else, although as apostles of Christ we had authority to demand it.*NoteCloseOr although as apostles of Christ we could have been a burden to you; SBL, NE, and WH include this phrase with verse 7.
7[THOUGH] HAVING AUTHORITY WITH WEIGHT TO BE AS CHRIST’S APOSTLES; [7] BUT WE WERE INFANTS IN [THE] MIDST OF YOU, AS MAYBE A NURSING MOTHER SHALL CHERISH <THE> HER OWN CHILDREN, 7On the contrary, we were gentle among you*NoteCloseWH and NA we were like young children among you like a nursing mother caring for her children.
8SO YEARNING FOR YOU WE WERE PLEASED TO HAVE IMPARTED TO YOU NOT ONLY THE GOSPEL <THE> OF GOD BUT ALSO <THE> OUR OWN LIVES, BECAUSE BELOVED TO US YOU HAVE BECOME. 8We cared so deeply that we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God, but our own lives as well. That is how beloved you have become to us.
9YOU REMEMBER FOR, BROTHERS, THE LABOR OF US AND <THE> HARDSHIP: BY NIGHT FOR AND DAY WORKING IN ORDER <THE> NOT TO BURDEN ANYONE OF YOU WE PROCLAIMED TO YOU THE GOSPEL <THE> OF GOD. 9Surely you recall, brothers, our labor and toil. We worked night and day so that we would not be a burden to anyone while we proclaimed to you the gospel of God.
10YOU [ARE] WITNESSES AND <THE> GOD, HOW HOLILY AND RIGHTEOUSLY AND BLAMELESSLY TOWARD YOU THOSE BELIEVING WE WERE, 10You are witnesses, and so is God, of how holy, righteous, and blameless our conduct was among you who believed.
11JUST AS YOU KNOW HOW ONE EACH OF YOU AS A FATHER CHILDREN OF HIMSELF 11For you know that we treated each of you as a father treats his own children—
12EXHORTING YOU AND COMFORTING AND CHARGING [12] UNTO <THE> TO WALK YOU WORTHILY <THE> OF GOD WHO IS CALLING YOU TO THE HIS OWN KINGDOM AND GLORY. 12encouraging you, comforting you, and urging you to walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls you into His own kingdom and glory.
13AND BECAUSE OF THIS ALSO WE OURSELVES GIVE THANKS <THE> TO GOD UNCEASINGLY THAT HAVING RECEIVED [THE] WORD [BY YOUR] HEARING FROM US <THE> OF GOD YOU ACCEPTED NOT [THE] WORD OF MEN BUT EVEN AS IT IS TRULY [THE] WORD OF GOD, WHICH ALSO WORKS IN YOU WHO BELIEVE. 13And we continually thank God because when you received the word of God that you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but as it truly is, the word of God, which is also now at work in you who believe.
14YOU YOURSELVES FOR IMITATORS BECAME, BROTHERS, OF THE CHURCHES <THE> OF GOD WHICH ARE BEING IN <THE> JUDEA IN CHRIST JESUS, FOR THE [SAME] THESE SUFFERED ALSO YOU YOURSELVES FROM <THE> [YOUR] OWN COUNTRYMEN, EVEN AS ALSO [DID] THEY FROM THE JEWS, 14For you, brothers, became imitators of the churches of God in Judea that are in Christ Jesus. You suffered from your own countrymen the very things they suffered from the Jews,
15WHO BOTH THE LORD HAVING KILLED JESUS AND <THE> [THEIR] OWN PROPHETS AND US HAVING DRIVEN OUT AND GOD NOT PLEASING AND TO ALL MEN OPPOSED, 15who killed both the Lord Jesus and their own prophets and drove us out as well They are displeasing to God and hostile to all men,
16THEY ARE HINDERING US TO THE GENTILES TO SPEAK THAT THEY MAY BE SAVED, SO AS <THE> TO FILL UP THEIR <THE> SINS ALWAYS; HAS COME NOW UPON THEM THE WRATH OF THE GOD TO THE UTMOST. 16hindering us from telling the Gentiles how they may be saved. As a result, they continue to heap up their sins to full capacity; the utmost wrath has come upon them.*NoteCloseOr at last the wrath (of God) has come upon them.
17WE OURSELVES HOWEVER, BROTHERS, HAVING BEEN BEREAVED OF YOU FOR [THE] TIME OF AN HOUR IN FACE NOT IN HEART, MORE ABUNDANTLY WERE EAGER THE FACE OF YOU TO SEE WITH GREAT DESIRE. Paul’s Longing to Visit 17Brothers, although we were torn away from you for a short time (in person, not in heart), our desire to see you face to face was even more intense.
18THEREFORE WE WANTED TO COME TO YOU — I MYSELF INDEED PAUL BOTH ONCE AND TWICE — AND HINDERED US <THE> SATAN. 18For we wanted to come to you— indeed I, Paul, tried again and again— but Satan obstructed us.
19WHO [IS] FOR OUR HOPE OR JOY OR CROWN OF BOASTING? EXCEPT ONLY EVEN YOU BEFORE THE LORD OF US JESUS CHRIST AT <THE> HIS COMING? 19After all, who is our hope, our joy, our crown of boasting, if it is not you yourselves in the presence of our Lord Jesus at His coming?
