37AND IT WILL BE [THE] CORPSE OF JEZEBEL LIKE DUNG ON [THE] SURFACE OF THE FIELD IN [THE] TERRITORY OF JEZREEL THAT NOT PEOPLE WILL SAY THIS [IS] JEZEBEL 37And Jezebel’s body will lie like dung in the field on the plot of ground at Jezreel, so that no one can say: This is Jezebel.’*NoteCloseSee verse 10 and 1 Kings 21:23. ”
1AND [BELONGED] TO AHAB SEVENTY SONS IN SAMARIA AND HE WROTE JEHU LETTERS AND HE SENT [THEM] SAMARIA TO [THE] OFFICIALS OF JEZREEL THE ELDERS AND TO THE GUARDIANS AHAB <TO> SAYING Ahab’s Seventy Sons Killed 1Now Ahab had seventy sons in Samaria. So Jehu wrote letters and sent them to Samaria to the officials of Jezreel,*NoteCloseHebrew; LXX and Vulgate officials of the city to the elders, and to the guardians of the sons*NoteCloseHebrew does not include of the sons. of Ahab, saying:
2AND NOW WHEN COMES THE LETTER <THE> THIS TO YOU AND [ARE] WITH YOU [THE] SONS OF MASTER<S> YOUR AND [ARE] WITH YOU <THE> CHARIOTRY AND <THE> HORSES AND A CITY OF FORTIFICATION AND <THE> WEAPONRY 2“When this letter arrives, since your master’s sons are with you and you have chariots and horses, a fortified city and weaponry,
3AND YOU WILL SEE THE GOOD AND THE RIGHT OF [THE] SONS OF MASTER<S> YOUR AND YOU WILL SET [HIM] ON [THE] THRONE OF FATHER HIS AND FIGHT ON [THE] HOUSE OF MASTER<S> YOUR 3select the best and most worthy son of your master, set him on his father’s throne, and fight for your master’s house.”
4AND THEY WERE AFRAID VERY VERY AND THEY SAID THERE! [THE] TWO THE KINGS NOT THEY STOOD <TO> BEFORE HIM AND HOW? WILL WE STAND WE 4But they were terrified and reasoned, “If two kings could not stand against him, how can we?”
5AND HE SENT [THE ONE] WHO [WAS] OVER THE HOUSE AND [THE ONE] WHO [WAS] OVER THE CITY AND THE ELDERS AND THE GUARDIANS TO JEHU <TO> SAYING [ARE] SERVANTS YOUR WE AND ALL THAT YOU WILL SAY TO US WE WILL DO NOT WE WILL MAKE KING ANYONE THE GOOD IN VIEW YOUR DO 5So the palace administrator, the overseer of the city, the elders, and the guardians sent a message to Jehu: “We are your servants, and we will do whatever you say. We will not make anyone king. Do whatever is good in your sight.”
6AND HE WROTE TO THEM A LETTER SECOND <TO> SAYING IF [BELONG] TO ME YOU AND TO VOICE MY YOU [ARE] LISTENING TAKE <OBJ.> [THE] HEADS OF [THE] MEN OF [THE] SONS OF MASTER<S> YOUR AND COME TO ME ABOUT <THE> THIS TIME TOMORROW JEZREEL TOWARDS AND [THE] SONS OF THE KING SEVENTY MAN [WERE] WITH [THE] GREAT [PEOPLE] OF THE CITY [WHO] WERE BRINGING UP <OBJ.> THEM 6Then Jehu wrote them a second letter and said: “If you are on my side, and if you will obey me, then bring the heads of your master’s sons to me at Jezreel by this time tomorrow.” Now the sons of the king, seventy in all, were being brought up by the leading men of the city.
7AND IT WAS WHEN CAME THE LETTER TO THEM AND THEY TOOK <OBJ.> [THE] SONS OF THE KING AND THEY SLAUGHTERED SEVENTY MAN AND THEY PUT <OBJ.> HEADS THEIR IN <THE> BASKETS AND THEY SENT [THEM] TO HIM JEZREEL TOWARDS 7And when the letter arrived, they took the sons of the king and slaughtered all seventy of them. They put their heads in baskets and sent them to Jehu at Jezreel.
8AND HE CAME THE MESSENGER AND HE TOLD TO HIM <TO> SAYING THEY HAVE BROUGHT [THE] HEADS OF [THE] SONS OF THE KING AND HE SAID MAKE <OBJ.> THEM TWO HEAPS [THE] ENTRANCE OF THE GATE UNTIL THE MORNING 8When the messenger arrived, he told Jehu, “They have brought the heads of the sons of the king.” And Jehu ordered, “Pile them in two heaps at the entrance of the gate until morning.”
9AND IT WAS IN THE MORNING AND HE WENT OUT AND HE STOOD AND HE SAID TO ALL THE PEOPLE [ARE] RIGHTEOUS YOU HERE! I I CONSPIRED ON MASTER MY AND I KILLED HIM AND WHO? DID HE STRIKE DOWN <OBJ.> ALL THESE 9The next morning, Jehu went out and stood before all the people and said, “You are innocent. It was I who conspired against my master and killed him. But who killed all these?
10KNOW THEN THAT NOT IT WILL FALL ANY OF [THE] WORD OF YAHWEH [THE] GROUND TOWARDS WHICH HE HAS SPOKEN YAHWEH ON [THE] HOUSE OF AHAB AND YAHWEH HE HAS DONE <OBJ.> [THAT] WHICH HE SPOKE BY [THE] HAND OF SERVANT HIS ELIJAH 10Know, then, that not a word the LORD has spoken against the house of Ahab will fail, for the LORD has done what He promised through His servant Elijah.”
11AND HE STRUCK DOWN JEHU <OBJ.> ALL THOSE [WHO] REMAINED OF [THE] HOUSE OF AHAB IN JEZREEL AND ALL GREAT [MEN] HIS AND ACQUAINTANCES HIS AND PRIESTS HIS UNTIL NOT HE HAD LEFT TO HIM A SURVIVOR 11So Jehu killed everyone in Jezreel who remained of the house of Ahab, as well as all his great men and close friends and priests, leaving him without a single survivor.
12AND HE AROSE AND HE WENT AND HE WENT SAMARIA HE [WAS AT] BETH EKED OF [THE] SHEPHERDS ON [THE] WAY 12Then Jehu set out toward Samaria. At Beth-eked of the Shepherds,
13AND JEHU HE FOUND <OBJ.> [THE] BROTHERS OF AHAZIAH [THE] KING OF JUDAH AND HE SAID WHO? [ARE] YOU AND THEY SAID [ARE] [THE] BROTHERS OF AHAZIAH WE AND WE HAVE COME DOWN FOR [THE] PEACE OF [THE] SONS OF THE KING AND [THE] SONS OF THE QUEEN-MOTHER 13Jehu met some relatives of Ahaziah king of Judah and asked, “Who are you?” “We are relatives of Ahaziah,” they answered, “and we have come down to greet the sons of the king and of the queen mother.”
14AND HE SAID SEIZE THEM ALIVE AND THEY SEIZED THEM ALIVE AND THEY SLAUGHTERED THEM TO [THE] PIT OF BETH EKED FORTY AND TWO MAN AND NOT HE SPARED ANYONE FROM THEM 14Then Jehu ordered, “Take them alive.” So his men took them alive, then slaughtered them at the well of Beth-eked – forty-two men. He spared none of them.
15AND HE WENT FROM THERE AND HE FOUND <OBJ.> JONADAB [THE] SON OF RECHAB TO MEET HIM AND HE BLESSED HIM AND HE SAID TO HIM ¿ [IS] THERE WITH HEART YOUR RIGHT JUST AS HEART MY [IS] WITH HEART YOUR AND HE SAID JONADAB THERE IS AND THERE IS GIVE! <OBJ.> HAND YOUR AND HE GAVE HAND HIS AND HE TOOK UP HIM TO HIMSELF INTO THE CHARIOT 15When he left there, he found Jehonadab son of Rechab, who was coming to meet him. Jehu greeted him and asked “Is your heart as true to mine as my heart is to yours?” “It is!” Jehonadab replied. “If it is,” said Jehu, “give me your hand.” So he gave him his hand, and Jehu helped him into his chariot,
16AND HE SAID COME! WITH ME AND LOOK ON ZEAL MY FOR YAHWEH AND THEY MADE RIDE <OBJ.> HIM IN CHARIOT HIS 16saying, “Come with me and see my zeal for the LORD!” So he had him ride*NoteCloseLXX, Syriac, and Targum Yonaton; Hebrew they had him ride in his chariot.
17AND HE CAME SAMARIA AND HE STRUCK DOWN <OBJ.> ALL THOSE [WHO] REMAINED OF AHAB IN SAMARIA UNTIL HE HAD DESTROYED HIM ACCORDING TO [THE] WORD OF YAHWEH WHICH HE HAD SPOKEN TO ELIJAH 17When Jehu came to Samaria, he struck down everyone belonging to Ahab who remained there, until he had destroyed them, according to the word that the LORD had spoken to Elijah.
18AND HE GATHERED JEHU <OBJ.> ALL THE PEOPLE AND HE SAID TO THEM AHAB HE SERVED <OBJ.> <THE> BAAL A LITTLE JEHU HE WILL SERVE HIM MUCH Jehu Kills the Priests of Baal 18Then Jehu brought all the people together and said “Ahab served Baal a little, but Jehu will serve him a lot.
19AND THEREFORE ALL [THE] PROPHETS OF <THE> BAAL ALL [THOSE WHO] SERVE HIM AND ALL PRIESTS HIS SUMMON TO ME ANYONE MAY NOT HE BE MISSING FOR A SACRIFICE GREAT [BELONGS] TO ME TO <THE> BAAL ANY [ONE] WHO HE WILL BE MISSING NOT HE WILL LIVE AND JEHU HE ACTED WITH GUILE SO AS TO DESTROY <OBJ.> [THOSE WHO] SERVE <OF THE> BAAL 19Now, therefore, summon to me all the prophets of Baal, all his servants, and all his priests. See that no one is missing, for I have a great sacrifice for Baal. Whoever is missing will not live.” But Jehu was acting deceptively in order to destroy the servants of Baal.
20AND HE SAID JEHU CONSECRATE AN ASSEMBLY TO <THE> BAAL AND THEY PROCLAIMED [IT] 20And Jehu commanded, “Proclaim a solemn assembly for Baal.” So they announced it.
21AND HE SENT JEHU IN ALL ISRAEL AND THEY CAME ALL [THOSE WHO] SERVE <OF THE> BAAL AND NOT HE WAS LEFT ANYONE WHO NOT HE CAME AND THEY WENT [THE] HOUSE OF <THE> BAAL AND IT WAS FILLED [THE] HOUSE OF <THE> BAAL MOUTH TO MOUTH 21Then Jehu sent word throughout Israel, and all the servants of Baal came; there was not a man who failed to show. They entered the temple of Baal, and it was filled from end to end.
22AND HE SAID TO [THE ONE] WHO [WAS] OVER THE WARDROBE BRING OUT CLOTHING FOR ALL [THOSE WHO] SERVE <OF THE> BAAL AND HE BROUGHT OUT FOR THEM THE CLOTHING 22And Jehu said to the keeper of the wardrobe, “Bring out garments for all the servants of Baal.” So he brought out garments for them.
23AND HE WENT JEHU AND JONADAB [THE] SON OF RECHAB [THE] HOUSE OF <THE> BAAL AND HE SAID TO [THOSE WHO] SERVE <OF THE> BAAL SEARCH AND SEE LEST THERE HERE WITH YOU [BE] ANY OF [THE] SERVANTS OF YAHWEH THAT EXCEPT [THOSE WHO] SERVE <OF THE> BAAL TO ALONE THEM 23Next, Jehu and Jehonadab son of Rechab entered the temple of Baal, and Jehu said to the servants of Baal, “Look around to see that there are no servants of the LORD here among you – only servants of Baal
24AND THEY WENT TO OFFER SACRIFICES AND BURNT OFFERINGS AND JEHU HE HAD STATIONED <FOR> HIMSELF ON THE OUTSIDE EIGHTY MAN AND HE HAD SAID THE MAN WHO HE WILL ESCAPE FROM THE MEN WHOM I [AM] BRINGING ON HANDS YOUR LIFE HIS IN PLACE OF LIFE HIS 24And they went in*NoteCloseLXX he went in; see also verse 25. to offer sacrifices and burnt offerings. Now Jehu had stationed eighty men outside and warned them, “If anyone allows one of the men I am delivering into your hands to escape, he will forfeit his life for theirs.”
25AND IT WAS WHEN FINISHED HE TO OFFER THE BURNT OFFERING AND HE SAID JEHU TO THE RUNNERS AND TO THE OFFICERS GO STRIKE DOWN THEM ANYONE MAY NOT HE COME OUT AND THEY STRUCK DOWN THEM TO [THE] MOUTH OF [THE] SWORD AND THEY THREW [THEM] OUT THE RUNNERS AND THE OFFICERS AND THEY WENT TO [THE] CITY OF [THE] HOUSE OF <THE> BAAL 25When he had finished making the burnt offering, Jehu said to the guards and officers, “Go in and kill them. Do not let anyone out.” So the guards and officers put them to the sword, threw the bodies out, and went into the inner room of the temple of Baal.
26AND THEY BROUGHT OUT <OBJ.> [THE] SACRED PILLARS OF [THE] HOUSE OF <THE> BAAL AND THEY BURNED IT 26They brought out the sacred pillar of the temple of Baal and burned it.
27AND THEY PULLED DOWN <OBJ.> [THE] SACRED PILLAR OF <THE> BAAL AND THEY PULLED DOWN <OBJ.> [THE] HOUSE OF <THE> BAAL AND THEY MADE IT <INTO> OUTHOUSES UNTIL THIS DAY 27They also demolished the sacred pillar of Baal. Then they tore down the temple of Baal and made it into a latrine, which it is to this day.
28AND HE DESTROYED JEHU <OBJ.> <THE> BAAL FROM ISRAEL Jehu Repeats Jeroboam’s Sins 28Thus Jehu eradicated Baal from Israel,
29ONLY [THE] SINS OF JEROBOAM [THE] SON OF NEBAT WHICH HE CAUSED TO SIN <OBJ.> ISRAEL NOT HE TURNED ASIDE JEHU FROM AFTER THEM [THE] CALVES OF <THE> GOLD WHICH [WERE] BETH- -EL AND WHICH [WERE] IN DAN 29but he did not turn away from the sins that Jeroboam son of Nebat had caused Israel to commit – the worship of the golden calves at Bethel and Dan.
30AND HE SAID YAHWEH TO JEHU BECAUSE THAT YOU HAVE DONE WELL BY DOING THE RIGHT IN VIEW MY ACCORDING TO ALL THAT [WAS] IN HEART MY YOU HAVE DONE TO [THE] HOUSE OF AHAB DESCENDANTS OF [THE] FOURTH [GENERATION] THEY WILL SIT OF YOU ON [THE] THRONE OF ISRAEL 30Nevertheless, the LORD said to Jehu, “Because you have done well in carrying out what is right in My sight and have done to the house of Ahab all that was in My heart, four generations of your sons will sit on the throne of Israel.”
31AND JEHU NOT HE TOOK CARE TO WALK IN [THE] LAW OF YAHWEH [THE] GOD OF ISRAEL WITH ALL HEART HIS NOT HE TURNED ASIDE FROM ON [THE] SINS OF JEROBOAM WHICH HE CAUSED TO SIN <OBJ.> ISRAEL 31Yet Jehu was not careful to follow the instruction of the LORD, the God of Israel, with all his heart. He did not turn away from the sins that Jeroboam had caused Israel to commit.
32IN THE DAYS <THE> THOSE HE BEGAN YAHWEH TO CUT OFF IN ISRAEL AND HE STRUCK DOWN THEM HAZAEL IN ALL [THE] TERRITORY OF ISRAEL 32In those days the LORD began to reduce the size of Israel. Hazael defeated the Israelites throughout their territory
33FROM THE JORDAN [THE] RISING OF THE SUN <OBJ.> ALL [THE] LAND OF <THE> GILEAD THE GADITE[S] AND THE REUBENITE[S] AND THE MANASSITE[S] FROM AROER WHICH [IS] AT [THE] WADI OF ARNON AND <THE> GILEAD AND <THE> BASHAN 33from the Jordan eastward through all the land of Gilead (the region of Gad, Reuben, and Manasseh), and from Aroer by the Arnon Valley through Gilead to Bashan.
34AND [THE] REST OF [THE] MATTERS OF JEHU AND ALL THAT HE DID AND ALL MIGHT HIS ¿ NOT [ARE] THEY WRITTEN ON [THE] SCROLL OF [THE] MATTERS OF THE DAYS OF [THE] KINGS OF ISRAEL Jehoahaz Succeeds Jehu in Israel 34As for the rest of the acts of Jehu, along with all his accomplishments and all his might, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Israel?
35AND HE LAY DOWN JEHU WITH ANCESTORS HIS AND PEOPLE BURIED <OBJ.> HIM IN SAMARIA AND HE BECAME KING JEHOAHAZ SON HIS IN PLACE OF HIM 35And Jehu rested with his fathers and was buried in Samaria, and his son Jehoahaz reigned in his place.
36AND THE DAYS WHICH HE REIGNED JEHU OVER ISRAEL [WERE] TWENTY AND EIGHT YEAR[S] IN SAMARIA 36So the duration of Jehu’s reign over Israel in Samaria was twenty-eight years.
