29AND HE RETURNED JORAM THE KING TO GET HIMSELF HEALED IN JEZREEL FROM THE WOUNDS WHICH THEY WOUNDED HIM [THE] ARAMEANS AT <THE> RAMAH WHEN FOUGHT HE WITH HAZAEL [THE] KING OF ARAM AND AHAZIAH [THE] SON OF JEHORAM [THE] KING OF JUDAH HE WENT DOWN TO SEE <OBJ.> JORAM [THE] SON OF AHAB IN JEZREEL FOR [WAS] SICK HE 29So King Joram returned to Jezreel to recover from the wounds that the Arameans had inflicted on him at Ramah*NoteCloseRamah is a variant of Ramoth; see verse 28. when he fought against Hazael king of Aram. Then Ahaziah son of Jehoram king of Judah went down to Jezreel to visit Joram son of Ahab, because Joram had been wounded.
1AND ELISHA THE PROPHET HE SUMMONED <TO> ONE FROM [THE] SONS OF THE PROPHETS AND HE SAID TO HIM GIRD UP LOINS YOUR AND TAKE [THE] FLASK OF <THE> OIL <THE> THIS IN HAND YOUR AND GO RAMOTH GILEAD Jehu Anointed King of Israel 1Now Elisha the prophet summoned one of the sons of the prophets and said to him, “Tuck your cloak under your belt,*NoteCloseLiterally Gird up your loins take this flask of oil and go to Ramoth-gilead.
2AND YOU WILL GO THERE TOWARDS AND LOOK FOR THERE JEHU [THE] SON OF JEHOSHAPHAT [THE] SON OF NIMSHI AND YOU WILL GO AND YOU WILL MAKE RISE HIM FROM AMONG BROTHERS HIS AND YOU WILL BRING <OBJ.> HIM A ROOM IN A ROOM 2When you arrive, look for Jehu son of Jehoshaphat, the son of Nimshi. Go in, get him away from his companions, and take him to an inner room.
3AND YOU WILL TAKE [THE] FLASK OF <THE> OIL AND YOU WILL POUR [IT] ON HEAD HIS AND YOU WILL SAY THUS HE SAYS YAHWEH I ANOINT YOU TO KING TO ISRAEL AND YOU WILL OPEN THE DOOR AND YOU WILL FLEE AND NOT YOU MUST DELAY 3Then take the flask of oil, pour it on his head, and declare, ‘This is what the LORD says: I anoint you king over Israel.’ Then open the door and run. Do not delay!”
4AND HE WENT THE YOUNG MAN THE YOUNG MAN THE PROPHET RAMOTH GILEAD 4So the young prophet went to Ramoth-gilead,
5AND HE CAME AND THERE! [THE] COMMANDERS OF THE ARMY [WERE] SITTING AND HE SAID A WORD [BELONGS] TO <THE> ME TO YOU O COMMANDER AND HE SAID JEHU TO WHOM? FROM ALL OF US AND HE SAID TO YOU O COMMANDER 5and when he arrived, the army commanders were sitting there. “I have a message for you, commander,” he said. “For which of us?” asked Jehu. “For you, commander,” he replied.
6AND HE AROSE AND HE WENT THE HOUSE TOWARDS AND HE POURED THE OIL TO HEAD HIS AND HE SAID TO HIM THUS HE SAYS YAHWEH [THE] GOD OF ISRAEL I ANOINT YOU TO KING TO [THE] PEOPLE OF YAHWEH TO ISRAEL 6So Jehu got up and went into the house, where the young prophet poured the oil on his head and declared “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘I anoint you king over the LORD’s people Israel.
7AND YOU WILL STRIKE DOWN <OBJ.> [THE] HOUSE OF AHAB MASTER<S> YOUR AND I WILL AVENGE [THE] BLOOD<S> OF SERVANTS MY THE PROPHETS AND [THE] BLOOD<S> OF ALL [THE] SERVANTS OF YAHWEH FROM [THE] HAND OF JEZEBEL 7And you are to strike down the house of your master Ahab, so that I may avenge the blood of My servants the prophets and the blood of all the servants of the LORD shed by the hand of Jezebel.
8AND IT WILL PERISH ALL [THE] HOUSE OF AHAB AND I WILL CUT OFF TO AHAB [ONE WHO] URINATES ON A WALL AND SHUT UP AND FREED IN ISRAEL 8The whole house of Ahab will perish, and I will cut off from Ahab every male,*NoteCloseLiterally (all) those who urinate against a wall both slave and free, in Israel.
9AND I WILL MAKE <OBJ.> [THE] HOUSE OF AHAB LIKE [THE] HOUSE OF JEROBOAM [THE] SON OF NEBAT AND LIKE [THE] HOUSE OF BAASHA [THE] SON OF AHIJAH 9I will make the house of Ahab like the houses of Jeroboam son of Nebat and Baasha son of Ahijah.
10AND <OBJ.> JEZEBEL THEY WILL DEVOUR THE DOGS IN [THE] TERRITORY OF JEZREEL AND THERE NOT [WILL BE ONE WHO] BURIES [HER] AND HE OPENED THE DOOR AND HE FLED 10And on the plot of ground at Jezreel the dogs will devour Jezebel, and there will be no one to bury her.’” Then the young prophet opened the door and ran.
11AND JEHU HE WENT OUT TO [THE] SERVANTS OF MASTER<S> HIS AND SOMEONE SAID TO HIM ¿ PEACE WHY? DID HE COME THE MAD [MAN] <THE> THIS TO YOU AND HE SAID TO THEM YOU YOU KNOW <OBJ.> THE MAN AND <OBJ.> TALK HIS 11When Jehu went out to the servants of his master, they asked “Is everything all right? Why did this madman come to you?” “You know his kind and their babble,” he replied.
12AND THEY SAID FALSEHOOD TELL PLEASE TO US AND HE SAID LIKE THIS AND LIKE THIS HE SAID TO ME <TO> SAYING THUS HE SAYS YAHWEH I ANOINT YOU TO KING TO ISRAEL 12“That is a lie!” they said. “Tell us now!” So Jehu answered, “He talked to me about this and that, saying, ‘This is what the LORD says: I anoint you king over Israel.’”
13AND THEY HURRIED AND THEY TOOK EACH GARMENT HIS AND THEY PUT [THEM] UNDER HIM TO [THE] BONE OF THE STEPS AND THEY GAVE A BLAST ON THE TRUMPET AND THEY SAID HE IS KING JEHU 13Quickly, each man took his garment and put it under Jehu on the bare steps. Then they blew the ram’s horn and proclaimed, “Jehu is king!”
14AND HE CONSPIRED JEHU [THE] SON OF JEHOSHAPHAT [THE] SON OF NIMSHI AGAINST JORAM AND JORAM HE HAD BEEN WATCHING AT RAMOTH GILEAD HE AND ALL ISRAEL FROM BEFORE HAZAEL [THE] KING OF ARAM Jehu Kills Joram and Ahaziah (2 Chronicles 22:8–9) 14Thus Jehu son of Jehoshaphat, the son of Nimshi, conspired against Joram. (Now Joram and all Israel had been defending Ramoth-gilead against Hazael king of Aram,
15AND HE HAD RETURNED JEHORAM THE KING TO GET HIMSELF HEALED IN JEZREEL FROM THE WOUNDS WHICH THEY WOUNDED HIM [THE] ARAMEANS WHEN FOUGHT HE WITH HAZAEL [THE] KING OF ARAM AND HE SAID JEHU IF THERE [IS] MIND YOUR MAY NOT HE GO OUT AN ESCAPEE FROM THE CITY TO GO TO TELL IN JEZREEL 15but King Joram*NoteCloseOr Jehoram, a variant of Joram; also in verses 17, 21, 22, 23, and 24 had returned to Jezreel to recover from the wounds he had suffered at the hands of the Arameans in the battle against Hazael their king So Jehu said, “If you commanders wish to make me king, then do not let anyone escape from the city to go and tell it in Jezreel.”
16AND HE RODE IN A CHARIOT JEHU AND HE WENT JEZREEL TOWARDS FOR JORAM [WAS] LYING THERE <TOWARDS> AND AHAZIAH [THE] KING OF JUDAH HE HAD COME DOWN TO SEE <OBJ.> JORAM 16Then Jehu got into his chariot and went to Jezreel, because Joram was laid up there. And Ahaziah king of Judah had gone down to see him.
17AND THE WATCHMAN [WAS] STANDING ON THE TOWER IN JEZREEL AND HE SAW <OBJ.> [THE] CROWD OF JEHU WHEN CAME HE AND HE SAID A CROWD I [AM] SEEING AND HE SAID JEHORAM TAKE A HORSEMAN AND SEND [HIM] TO MEET THEM AND HE MAY SAY ¿ PEACE 17Now the watchman standing on the tower in Jezreel saw Jehu’s troops approaching, and he called out, “I see a company of troops!” “Choose a rider,” Joram commanded. “Send him out to meet them and ask, ‘Have you come in peace?’”
18AND HE WENT [THE] RIDER OF THE HORSE TO MEET HIM AND HE SAID THUS HE SAYS THE KING ¿ PEACE AND HE SAID JEHU WHAT? [IS] TO YOU AND TO PEACE GO AROUND TO AFTER ME AND HE REPORTED THE WATCHMAN <TO> SAYING HE CAME THE MESSENGER TO THEY AND NOT HE HAS TURNED BACK 18So a horseman rode off to meet Jehu and said, “This is what the king asks: ‘Have you come in peace?’” “What do you know about peace?” Jehu replied. “Fall in behind me.” And the watchman reported, “The messenger reached them, but he is not coming back.”
19AND HE SENT A RIDER OF A HORSE SECOND AND HE CAME TO THEM AND HE SAID THUS HE SAYS THE KING PEACE AND HE SAID JEHU WHAT? [IS] TO YOU AND TO PEACE GO AROUND TO AFTER ME 19So the king sent out a second horseman, who went to them and said, “This is what the king asks: ‘Have you come in peace?’” “What do you know about peace?” Jehu replied. “Fall in behind me.”
20AND HE REPORTED THE WATCHMAN <TO> SAYING HE CAME TO TO THEM AND NOT HE HAS TURNED BACK AND THE DRIVING [IS] LIKE [THE] DRIVING OF JEHU [THE] SON OF NIMSHI FOR WITH MADNESS HE DRIVES 20Again the watchman reported, “He reached them, but he is not coming back. And the charioteer is driving like Jehu son of Nimshi*NoteCloseOr grandson of Nimshi; see verse 14. — he is driving like a madman!”
21AND HE SAID JEHORAM HARNESS AND SOMEONE HARNESSED CHARIOT HIS AND HE WENT OUT JEHORAM [THE] KING OF ISRAEL AND AHAZIAH [THE] KING OF JUDAH EACH IN CHARIOT HIS AND THEY WENT OUT TO MEET JEHU AND THEY FOUND HIM IN [THE] PORTION OF LAND OF NABOTH THE JEZREELITE 21“Harness!” Joram shouted, and they harnessed his chariot. Then Joram king of Israel and Ahaziah king of Judah set out, each in his own chariot, and met Jehu on the property of Naboth the Jezreelite.
22AND IT WAS WHEN SAW JEHORAM <OBJ.> JEHU AND HE SAID ¿ PEACE O JEHU AND HE SAID WHAT? [IS] <THE> PEACE UNTIL [THE] PROSTITUTIONS OF JEZEBEL MOTHER YOUR AND SORCERIES HER <THE> MANY 22When Joram saw Jehu, he asked, “Have you come in peace, Jehu?” “How can there be peace,” he replied, “as long as the idolatry*NoteCloseHebrew adultery or prostitution, here a metaphor for idolatry and witchcraft of your mother Jezebel abound?”
23AND HE TURNED AROUND JEHORAM HANDS HIS AND HE FLED AND HE SAID TO AHAZIAH TREACHERY O AHAZIAH 23Joram turned around*NoteCloseLiterally turned his hands and fled, calling out to Ahaziah, “Treachery, Ahaziah!”
24AND JEHU HE FILLED HAND HIS WITH <THE> BOW AND HE STRUCK <OBJ.> JEHORAM BETWEEN ARMS HIS AND IT CAME OUT THE ARROW FROM HEART HIS AND HE SANK DOWN IN CHARIOT HIS 24Then Jehu drew his bow and shot Joram between the shoulders. The arrow pierced his heart, and he slumped down in his chariot.
25AND HE SAID TO BIDKAR OFFICER HIS PICK [HIM] UP THROW HIM IN [THE] PORTION OF [THE] FIELD OF NABOTH THE JEZREELITE FOR REMEMBER I AND YOU <OBJ.> [WERE] RIDING PAIRS BEHIND AHAB FATHER HIS AND YAHWEH HE LIFTED UP ON HIM <OBJ.> THE ORACLE <THE> THIS 25And Jehu said to Bidkar his officer, “Pick him up and throw him into the field of Naboth the Jezreelite. For remember that when you and I were riding together behind his father Ahab, the LORD lifted up this burden against him:
26IF NOT <OBJ.> [THE] BLOOD<S> OF NABOTH AND <OBJ.> [THE] BLOOD<S> OF SONS HIS I SAW YESTERDAY [THE] UTTERANCE OF YAHWEH AND I WILL REPAY TO YOU ON THE PORTION OF LAND <THE> THIS [THE] UTTERANCE OF YAHWEH AND THEREFORE PICK [HIM] UP THROW HIM ON THE PORTION OF LAND ACCORDING TO [THE] WORD OF YAHWEH 26‘As surely as I saw the blood of Naboth and the blood of his sons yesterday, declares the LORD, so will I repay you on this plot of ground, declares the LORD.’ Now then, according to the word of the LORD, pick him up and throw him on the plot of ground.”
27AND AHAZIAH [THE] KING OF JUDAH HE SAW AND HE FLED [THE] DIRECTION BETH HAGGAN AND HE PURSUED AFTER HIM JEHU AND HE SAID ALSO <OBJ.> HIM STRIKE DOWN HIM INTO THE CHARIOT AT [THE] ASCENT OF GUR WHICH [IS] WITH IBLEAM AND HE FLED MEGIDDO AND HE DIED THERE 27When King Ahaziah of Judah saw this, he fled up the road toward Beth-haggan. And Jehu pursued him, shouting, “Shoot him too!” So they shot Ahaziah in his chariot on the Ascent of Gur,*NoteCloseSee Syriac, Vulgate, and LXX; Hebrew “Shoot him, too, in his chariot!” (They did this) on the Ascent of Gur, near Ibleam, and he fled to Megiddo and died there.
28AND THEY CAUSED TO RIDE <OBJ.> HIM SERVANTS HIS JERUSALEM TOWARDS AND THEY BURIED <OBJ.> HIM IN GRAVE HIS WITH ANCESTORS HIS IN [THE] CITY OF DAVID 28Then his servants carried him by chariot to Jerusalem and buried him with his fathers in his tomb in the City of David.
29AND IN YEAR ONE [PLUS] TEN YEAR OF JORAM [THE] SON OF AHAB HE HAD BECOME KING AHAZIAH OVER JUDAH 29(In the eleventh year of Joram son of Ahab, Ahaziah had become king over Judah.)
30AND HE WENT JEHU JEZREEL TOWARDS AND JEZEBEL SHE HEARD AND SHE SET WITH <THE> EYE-PAINT EYES HER AND SHE MADE GOOD <OBJ.> HEAD HER AND SHE LOOKED DOWN THROUGH THE WINDOW Jezebel’s Violent Death 30Now when Jehu arrived in Jezreel, Jezebel heard of it. So she painted her eyes, adorned her head, and looked down from a window.
31AND JEHU HE CAME IN THE GATE AND SHE SAID ¿ PEACE O ZIMRI [THE] MURDERER OF MASTER<S> HIS 31And as Jehu entered the gate, she asked, “Have you come in peace, O Zimri, murderer of your master?”*NoteCloseOr “Is there peace for Zimri, the murderer of his master?” See 1 Kings 16:10.
32AND HE LIFTED UP FACE HIS TO THE WINDOW AND HE SAID WHO? [IS] WITH ME WHO? AND THEY LOOKED DOWN TO HIM TWO THREE COURT-OFFICIALS 32He looked up at the window and called out, “Who is on my side? Who?” And two or three eunuchs looked down at him.
33AND HE SAID LET FALL HER AND THEY LET FALL HER AND IT SPATTERED SOME OF BLOOD HER TO THE WALL AND TO THE HORSES AND HE TRAMPLED HER 33“Throw her down!” yelled Jehu. So they threw her down, and her blood splattered on the wall and on the horses as they trampled her underfoot.
34AND HE WENT AND HE ATE AND HE DRANK AND HE SAID ATTEND TO PLEASE <OBJ.> THE ACCURSED [WOMAN] <THE> THIS AND BURY HER FOR [WAS] A DAUGHTER OF A KING SHE 34Then Jehu went in and ate and drank. “Take care of this cursed woman,” he said, “and bury her, for she was the daughter of a king.”
35AND THEY WENT TO BURY HER AND NOT THEY FOUND IN HER THAT EXCEPT THE SKULL AND THE FEET AND [THE] PALMS OF THE HANDS 35But when they went out to bury her, they found nothing but her skull, her feet, and the palms of her hands.
36AND THEY RETURNED AND THEY TOLD TO HIM AND HE SAID [IS] [THE] WORD OF YAHWEH IT WHICH HE SPOKE BY [THE] HAND OF SERVANT HIS ELIJAH THE TISHBITE <TO> SAYING IN [THE] TERRITORY OF JEZREEL THEY WILL DEVOUR THE DOGS <OBJ.> [THE] FLESH OF JEZEBEL 36So they went back and told Jehu, who replied, “This is the word of the LORD, which He spoke through His servant Elijah the Tishbite: ‘On the plot of ground at Jezreel the dogs will devour the flesh of Jezebel.
37AND IT WILL BE [THE] CORPSE OF JEZEBEL LIKE DUNG ON [THE] SURFACE OF THE FIELD IN [THE] TERRITORY OF JEZREEL THAT NOT PEOPLE WILL SAY THIS [IS] JEZEBEL 37And Jezebel’s body will lie like dung in the field on the plot of ground at Jezreel, so that no one can say: This is Jezebel.’*NoteCloseSee verse 10 and 1 Kings 21:23. ”
