20AND HE LAY DOWN AHAZ WITH ANCESTORS HIS AND HE WAS BURIED WITH ANCESTORS HIS IN [THE] CITY OF DAVID AND HE BECAME KING HEZEKIAH SON HIS IN PLACE OF HIM 20And Ahaz rested with his fathers and was buried with them in the City of David, and his son Hezekiah reigned in his place.
1IN YEAR TWO [PLUS] TEN OF AHAZ [THE] KING OF JUDAH HE BECAME KING HOSHEA [THE] SON OF ELAH IN SAMARIA OVER ISRAEL NINE YEARS Hoshea the Last King of Israel 1In the twelfth year of the reign of Ahaz over Judah, Hoshea son of Elah became king of Israel, and he reigned in Samaria nine years.
2AND HE DID THE EVIL IN [THE] EYES OF YAHWEH ONLY NOT LIKE [THE] KINGS OF ISRAEL WHO THEY WERE <TO> BEFORE HIM 2And he did evil in the sight of the LORD, but not like the kings of Israel who preceded him.
3ON HIM HE CAME UP SHALMANESER [THE] KING OF ASSYRIA AND HE BECAME OF HIM HOSHEA SUBJECT AND HE RETURNED TO HIM TRIBUTE 3Shalmaneser king of Assyria attacked him, and Hoshea became his vassal and paid him tribute.
4AND HE FOUND [THE] KING OF ASSYRIA IN HOSHEA TREASON THAT HE HAD SENT MESSENGERS TO SO [THE] KING OF EGYPT AND NOT HE HAD BROUGHT UP TRIBUTE TO [THE] KING OF ASSYRIA AS A YEAR IN A YEAR AND HE ARRESTED HIM [THE] KING OF ASSYRIA AND HE CONFINED HIM [THE] HOUSE OF IMPRISONMENT 4But the king of Assyria discovered that Hoshea had conspired to send envoys to King So*NoteCloseSo is likely an abbreviation for Osorkon. of Egypt, and that he had not paid tribute to the king of Assyria as in previous years. Therefore the king of Assyria arrested Hoshea and put him in prison.
5AND HE CAME UP [THE] KING OF ASSYRIA IN ALL THE LAND AND HE CAME UP SAMARIA AND HE LAID SIEGE ON IT THREE YEARS Israel Carried Captive to Assyria 5Then the king of Assyria invaded the whole land, marched up to Samaria, and besieged it for three years.
6IN [THE] YEAR <OF THE> NINTH OF HOSHEA HE CAPTURED [THE] KING OF ASSYRIA <OBJ.> SAMARIA AND HE TOOK INTO EXILE <OBJ.> ISRAEL ASSYRIA TOWARDS AND HE CAUSED TO DWELL <OBJ.> THEM IN HALAH AND ON [THE] HABOR [THE] RIVER OF GOZAN AND [THE] CITIES OF MEDIA 6In the ninth year of Hoshea, the king of Assyria captured Samaria and carried away the Israelites to Assyria, where he settled them in Halah, in Gozan by the Habor River, and in the cities of the Medes.
7AND IT WAS THAT THEY HAD SINNED [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL TO YAHWEH GOD THEIR WHO HAD BROUGHT UP <OBJ.> THEM FROM [THE] LAND OF EGYPT FROM UNDER [THE] HAND OF PHARAOH [THE] KING OF EGYPT AND THEY HAD FEARED GODS OTHER 7All this happened because the people of Israel had sinned against the LORD their God, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt. They had worshiped other gods
8AND THEY HAD WALKED IN [THE] CUSTOMS OF THE NATIONS WHICH HE HAD DISPOSSESSED YAHWEH FROM BEFORE [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL AND [THE] KINGS OF ISRAEL WHICH THEY HAD DONE 8and walked in the customs of the nations that the LORD had driven out before the Israelites, as well as in the practices introduced by the kings of Israel.
9AND THEY DID SECRETLY [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL THINGS WHICH [WERE] NOT RIGHT ON YAHWEH GOD THEIR AND THEY BUILT FOR THEMSELVES HIGH PLACES IN ALL CITIES THEIR FROM A TOWER OF WATCHMEN UNTO A CITY OF FORTIFICATION 9The Israelites secretly did things against the LORD their God that were not right. From watchtower to fortified city, they built high places in all their cities.
10AND THEY ERECTED FOR THEMSELVES SACRED PILLARS AND ASHERAH POLES ON EVERY HILL HIGH AND UNDER EVERY TREE LUXURIANT 10They set up for themselves sacred pillars and Asherah poles on every high hill and under every green tree.
11AND THEY MADE SMOKE THERE AT ALL [THE] HIGH PLACES LIKE THE NATIONS WHICH HE HAD TAKEN INTO EXILE YAHWEH FROM BEFORE THEM AND THEY DID THINGS EVIL TO PROVOKE TO ANGER <OBJ.> YAHWEH 11They burned incense on all the high places like the nations that the LORD had driven out before them. They did wicked things, provoking the LORD to anger.
12AND THEY SERVED THE IDOLS WHICH HE HAD SAID YAHWEH TO THEM NOT YOU MUST DO <OBJ.> THE THING <THE> THIS 12They served idols, although the LORD had told them, “You shall not do this thing.”*NoteCloseExodus 20:4–6; Deuteronomy 5:8–10
13AND HE WARNED YAHWEH <IN> ISRAEL AND <IN> JUDAH BY [THE] HAND OF EVERY [THE] PROPHETS EVERY SEER <TO> SAYING TURN BACK FROM WAYS YOUR <THE> EVIL AND KEEP COMMANDMENTS MY STATUTES MY ACCORDING TO ALL THE LAW WHICH I COMMANDED <OBJ.> ANCESTORS YOUR AND WHICH I SENT TO YOU BY [THE] HAND OF SERVANTS MY THE PROPHETS 13Yet through all His prophets and seers, the LORD warned Israel and Judah, saying, “Turn from your wicked ways and keep My commandments and statutes, according to the entire Law that I commanded your fathers and delivered to you through My servants the prophets.”
14AND NOT THEY LISTENED AND THEY STIFFENED <OBJ.> NECK THEIR LIKE [THE] NECK OF ANCESTORS THEIR WHO NOT THEY TRUSTED IN YAHWEH GOD THEIR 14But they would not listen, and they stiffened their necks like their fathers, who did not believe the LORD their God.
15AND THEY REJECTED <OBJ.> STATUTES HIS AND <OBJ.> COVENANT HIS WHICH HE HAD MADE WITH ANCESTORS THEIR AND <OBJ.> TESTIMONIES HIS WHICH HE WARNED <IN> THEM AND THEY WALKED AFTER <THE> VANITY AND THEY BECAME VAIN AND AFTER THE NATIONS WHICH [WERE] AROUND THEM WHICH HE HAD COMMANDED YAHWEH <OBJ.> THEM TO NOT TO DO LIKE THEM 15They rejected His statutes and the covenant He had made with their fathers, as well as the decrees He had given them. They pursued worthless idols and became worthless themselves, going after the surrounding nations that the LORD had commanded them not to imitate
16AND THEY FORSOOK <OBJ.> ALL [THE] COMMANDMENTS OF YAHWEH GOD THEIR AND THEY MADE FOR THEMSELVES A MOLTEN IMAGE TWO CALVES AND THEY MADE AN ASHERAH POLE AND THEY BOWED DOWN TO ALL [THE] HOST OF THE HEAVENS AND THEY SERVED <OBJ.> <THE> BAAL 16They abandoned all the commandments of the LORD their God and made for themselves two cast idols of calves and an Asherah pole. They bowed down to all the host of heaven and served Baal.
17AND THEY MADE PASS <OBJ.> SONS THEIR AND <OBJ.> DAUGHTERS THEIR IN THE FIRE AND THEY DIVINED DIVINATIONS AND THEY PRACTICED DIVINATION AND THEY SOLD THEMSELVES TO DO THE EVIL IN [THE] EYES OF YAHWEH TO PROVOKE TO ANGER HIM 17They sacrificed their sons and daughters in the fire*NoteCloseLiterally made their sons and their daughters pass through the fire and practiced divination and soothsaying. They devoted themselves to doing evil in the sight of the LORD, provoking Him to anger.
18AND HE WAS ANGRY YAHWEH VERY WITH ISRAEL AND HE REMOVED THEM FROM ON FACE HIS NOT ANYONE WAS LEFT ONLY [THE] TRIBE OF JUDAH TO ONLY IT 18So the LORD was very angry with Israel, and He removed them from His presence. Only the tribe of Judah remained,
19ALSO JUDAH NOT IT KEPT <OBJ.> [THE] COMMANDMENTS OF YAHWEH GOD THEIR AND THEY WALKED IN [THE] CUSTOMS OF ISRAEL WHICH THEY HAD DONE 19and even Judah did not keep the commandments of the LORD their God, but lived according to the customs Israel had introduced.
20AND HE REJECTED YAHWEH <IN> ALL [THE] OFFSPRING OF ISRAEL AND HE AFFLICTED THEM AND HE GAVE THEM IN [THE] HAND OF PLUNDERERS UNTIL THAT HE THREW THEM FROM BEFORE HIM 20So the LORD rejected all the descendants of Israel. He afflicted them and delivered them into the hands of plunderers, until He had banished them from His presence.
21IF HE TORE ISRAEL FROM WITH [THE] HOUSE OF DAVID AND THEY MADE KING <OBJ.> JEROBOAM [THE] SON OF NEBAT AND HE ENTICED AWAY JEROBOAM <OBJ.> ISRAEL FROM AFTER YAHWEH AND HE CAUSED TO SIN THEM A SIN GREAT 21When the LORD had torn Israel away from the house of David, they made Jeroboam son of Nebat king, and Jeroboam led Israel away from following the LORD and caused them to commit a great sin.
22AND THEY WALKED [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL IN ALL [THE] SINS OF JEROBOAM WHICH HE DID NOT THEY TURNED ASIDE FROM IT 22The Israelites persisted in all the sins that Jeroboam had committed and did not turn away from them.
23UNTIL THAT HE REMOVED YAHWEH <OBJ.> ISRAEL FROM ON FACE HIS JUST AS HE HAD SPOKEN BY [THE] HAND OF ALL SERVANTS HIS THE PROPHETS AND IT WENT INTO EXILE ISRAEL FROM ON LAND ITS ASSYRIA TOWARDS UNTIL THE DAY <THE> THIS 23Finally the LORD removed Israel from His presence, as He had declared through all His servants the prophets. So Israel was exiled from their homeland into Assyria, where they are to this day.
24AND HE BROUGHT [PEOPLE] [THE] KING OF ASSYRIA FROM BABYLON AND FROM CUTHAH <TOWARDS> AND FROM AVVA AND FROM HAMATH AND SEPHARVAIM AND HE CAUSED [THEM] TO DWELL IN [THE] CITIES OF SAMARIA IN PLACE OF [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL AND THEY TOOK POSSESSION OF <OBJ.> SAMARIA AND THEY DWELT IN CITIES ITS Samaria Resettled 24Then the king of Assyria brought people from Babylon, Cuthah, Avva, Hamath, and Sepharvaim and settled them in the towns of Samaria to replace the Israelites. They took possession of Samaria and lived in its towns.
25AND IT WAS AT [THE] BEGINNING OF DWELLING THEY THERE NOT THEY FEARED <OBJ.> YAHWEH AND HE SENT YAHWEH AMONG THEM <OBJ.> <THE> LIONS AND THEY WERE KILLING IN THEM 25Now when the settlers first lived there, they did not worship the LORD, so He sent lions among them which killed some of them.
26AND PEOPLE SAID TO [THE] KING OF ASSYRIA <TO> SAYING THE NATIONS WHICH YOU TOOK INTO EXILE AND YOU CAUSED TO DWELL IN [THE] CITIES OF SAMARIA NOT THEY KNOW <OBJ.> [THE] CUSTOM OF [THE] GOD OF THE LAND AND HE HAS SENT AMONG THEM <OBJ.> <THE> LIONS AND THERE THEY [ARE] KILLING <OBJ.> THEM <AS> SINCE NOT THEY [ARE] KNOWING <OBJ.> [THE] CUSTOM OF [THE] GOD OF THE LAND 26So they spoke to the king of Assyria, saying, “The peoples that you have removed and placed in the cities of Samaria do not know the requirements of the God of the land. Because of this, He has sent lions among them, which are indeed killing them off
27AND HE COMMANDED [THE] KING OF ASSYRIA <TO> SAYING TAKE THERE TOWARDS ONE FROM THE PRIESTS WHOM YOU TOOK INTO EXILE FROM THERE SO THEY MAY GO AND THEY MAY DWELL THERE SO HE MAY TEACH THEM <OBJ.> [THE] CUSTOM OF [THE] GOD OF THE LAND 27Then the king of Assyria commanded: “Send back one of the priests you carried off from Samaria, and have him go back to live there and teach the requirements of the God of the land.”
28AND HE WENT ONE FROM THE PRIESTS WHOM THEY HAD TAKEN INTO EXILE FROM SAMARIA AND HE DWELT IN BETH- -EL AND HE WAS TEACHING <OBJ.> THEM HOW? WILL THEY FEAR <OBJ.> YAHWEH 28Thus one of the priests they had carried away came and lived in Bethel, and he began to teach them how they should worship the LORD.
29AND THEY WERE MAKING NATION NATION OWN GODS ITS AND THEY PLACED [THEM] IN [THE] HOUSE OF THE HIGH PLACES WHICH THEY HAD MADE THE SAMARITANS NATION NATION IN OWN CITIES THEIR WHERE THEY [WERE] DWELLING THERE 29Nevertheless, the people of each nation continued to make their own gods in the cities where they had settled and they set them up in the shrines that the people of Samaria had made on the high places.
30AND [THE] PEOPLE OF BABYLON THEY MADE <OBJ.> SUCCOTH BENOTH AND [THE] PEOPLE OF CUTHAH THEY MADE <OBJ.> NERGAL AND [THE] PEOPLE OF HAMATH THEY MADE <OBJ.> ASHIMA 30The men of Babylon made Succoth-benoth, the men of Cuth made Nergal, the men of Hamath made Ashima,
31AND THE AVVITES THEY MADE NIBHAZ AND <OBJ.> TARTAK AND THE SEPHARVITES [WERE] BURNING <OBJ.> CHILDREN THEIR IN THE FIRE TO ADRAMMELECH AND ANAMMELECH [THE] GODS OF SEPHARVAIM 31the Avvites made Nibhaz and Tartak, and the Sepharvites burned their children in the fire to Adrammelech and Anammelech the gods of Sepharvaim.
32AND THEY WERE FEARING <OBJ.> YAHWEH AND THEY APPOINTED FOR THEMSELVES FROM AMONG THEMSELVES PRIESTS OF [THE] HIGH PLACES AND THEY WERE OFFERING FOR THEM IN [THE] HOUSE OF THE HIGH PLACES 32So the new residents worshiped the LORD, but they also appointed for themselves priests of all sorts to serve in the shrines of the high places.
33<OBJ.> YAHWEH THEY WERE FEARING AND <OBJ.> OWN GODS THEIR THEY WERE SERVING ACCORDING TO [THE] CUSTOM OF THE NATIONS WHICH THEY HAD TAKEN INTO EXILE <OBJ.> THEM FROM THERE 33They worshiped the LORD, but they also served their own gods according to the customs of the nations from which they had been carried away.
34UNTIL THE DAY <THE> THIS THEY [ARE] DOING ACCORDING TO THE CUSTOMS <THE> FORMER NOT THEY [ARE] FEARING <OBJ.> YAHWEH AND NOT THEY [ARE] DOING ACCORDING TO STATUTES THEIR AND ACCORDING TO JUDGMENT THEIR AND ACCORDING TO THE LAW AND ACCORDING TO THE COMMANDMENT WHICH HE COMMANDED YAHWEH <OBJ.> [THE] DESCENDANTS OF JACOB WHOM HE MADE NAME HIS ISRAEL 34To this day they are still practicing their former customs. None of them worship the LORD or observe the statutes, ordinances, laws, and commandments that the LORD gave the descendants of Jacob, whom He named Israel.
35AND HE MADE YAHWEH WITH THEM A COVENANT AND HE COMMANDED THEM <TO> SAYING NOT YOU MUST FEAR GODS OTHER AND NOT YOU MUST BOW DOWN TO THEM AND NOT YOU MUST SERVE THEM AND NOT YOU MUST SACRIFICE TO THEM 35For the LORD had made a covenant with the Israelites and commanded them, “Do not worship other gods or bow down to them; do not serve them or sacrifice to them.
36THAT EXCEPT <OBJ.> YAHWEH WHO HE BROUGHT UP <OBJ.> YOU FROM [THE] LAND OF EGYPT WITH POWER GREAT AND BY AN ARM OUTSTRETCHED <OBJ.> HIM YOU WILL FEAR AND TO HIM YOU WILL BOW DOWN AND TO HIM YOU WILL SACRIFICE 36Instead worship the LORD, who brought you out of the land of Egypt with great power and an outstretched arm. You are to bow down to Him and offer sacrifices to Him.
37AND <OBJ.> THE STATUTES AND <OBJ.> THE JUDGMENTS AND THE LAW AND THE COMMANDMENT WHICH HE WROTE FOR YOU YOU WILL TAKE CARE! TO DO ALL THE DAYS AND NOT YOU MUST FEAR GODS OTHER 37And you must always be careful to observe the statutes, ordinances, laws, and commandments He wrote for you. Do not worship other gods.
38AND THE COVENANT WHICH I MADE WITH YOU NOT YOU MUST FORGET AND NOT YOU MUST FEAR GODS OTHER 38Do not forget the covenant I have made with you. Do not worship other gods,
39THAT EXCEPT <OBJ.> YAHWEH GOD YOUR YOU WILL FEAR AND HE HE WILL DELIVER <OBJ.> YOU FROM [THE] HAND OF ALL ENEMIES YOUR 39but worship the LORD your God, and He will deliver you from the hands of all your enemies.”
40AND NOT THEY LISTENED THAT EXCEPT ACCORDING TO CUSTOM THEIR <THE> FORMER THEY [WERE] DOING 40But they would not listen, and they persisted in their former customs.
41AND THEY WERE THE NATIONS <THE> THESE FEARING <OBJ.> YAHWEH AND <OBJ.> IDOLS THEIR THEY WERE SERVING ALSO CHILDREN THEIR AND [THE] CHILDREN OF CHILDREN THEIR JUST AS THEY DID FATHERS THEIR THEY [ARE] DOING UNTIL THE DAY <THE> THIS 41So these nations worshiped the LORD but also served their idols, and to this day their children and grandchildren continue to do as their fathers did.
