1 AND HE SENT THE KING AND THEY GATHERED TO HIM ALL [THE] ELDERS OF JUDAH AND JERUSALEM
Josiah Renews the Covenant
(2 Chronicles 34:29–33 )
1 Then the king summoned all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem.
2 AND HE WENT UP THE KING [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH AND EVERY <THE> PERSON OF JUDAH AND ALL [THE] INHABITANTS OF JERUSALEM WITH HIM AND THE PRIESTS AND THE PROPHETS AND ALL THE PEOPLE <TO> FROM [THE] SMALL AND UNTO [THE] GREAT AND HE READ ALOUD IN EARS THEIR <OBJ.> ALL [THE] WORDS OF [THE] SCROLL OF THE COVENANT WHICH HAD BEEN FOUND IN [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH
2 And he went up to the house of the LORD with all the people of Judah and Jerusalem, as well as the priests and the prophets all the people small and great and in their hearing he read all the words of the Book of the Covenant that had been found in the house of the LORD.
3 AND HE STOOD THE KING AT THE PILLAR AND HE MADE <OBJ.> THE COVENANT <TO> BEFORE YAHWEH TO WALK AFTER YAHWEH AND TO KEEP COMMANDMENTS HIS AND <OBJ.> TESTIMONIES HIS AND <OBJ.> STATUTES HIS WITH ALL HEART AND WITH ALL BEING TO ESTABLISH <OBJ.> [THE] WORDS OF THE COVENANT <THE> THIS WHICH WERE WRITTEN ON THE SCROLL <THE> THIS AND IT TOOK ITS STAND ALL THE PEOPLE IN THE COVENANT
3 So the king stood by the pillar and made a covenant before the LORD to follow the LORD and to keep His commandments, decrees, and statutes with all his heart and all his soul, and to carry out the words of the covenant that were written in this book. And all the people entered into the covenant.
4 AND HE COMMANDED THE KING <OBJ.> HILKIAH THE PRIEST <THE> GREAT AND <OBJ.> [THE] PRIESTS OF THE SECOND RANK AND <OBJ.> [THE] KEEPERS OF THE THRESHOLD TO BRING OUT FROM [THE] TEMPLE OF YAHWEH <OBJ.> ALL THE ARTICLES WHICH WERE MADE FOR <THE> BAAL AND FOR <THE> ASHERAH AND FOR ALL [THE] HOST OF THE HEAVENS AND HE BURNED THEM FROM [THE] OUTSIDE OF JERUSALEM IN [THE] FIELDS OF KIDRON AND HE CARRIED <OBJ.> DUST THEIR BETH- -EL
Josiah Destroys Idolatry
(1 Kings 13:1–10 ; 2 Chronicles 34:3–7 )
4 Then the king commanded Hilkiah the high priest, the priests second in rank, and the doorkeepers to remove from the temple of the LORD all the articles made for Baal, Asherah, and all the host of heaven. And he burned them outside Jerusalem in the fields of Kidron and carried their ashes to Bethel.
5 AND HE REMOVED <OBJ.> THE PAGAN PRIESTS WHOM THEY HAD APPOINTED [THE] KINGS OF JUDAH AND HE MADE SMOKE AT THE HIGH PLACES IN [THE] CITIES OF JUDAH AND [THE] SURROUNDINGS OF JERUSALEM AND <OBJ.> THE [ONES WHO] MADE SMOKE TO <THE> BAAL TO THE SUN AND TO THE MOON AND TO THE CONSTELLATIONS AND TO ALL [THE] HOST OF THE HEAVENS
5 Josiah also did away with the idolatrous priests ordained by the kings of Judah to burn incense on the high places of the cities of Judah and in the places all around Jerusalem those who had burned incense to Baal, to the sun and moon, to the constellations, and to all the host of heaven.
6 AND HE BROUGHT OUT <OBJ.> THE ASHERAH POLE FROM [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH FROM [THE] OUTSIDE OF JERUSALEM TO [THE] WADI OF KIDRON AND HE BURNED <OBJ.> IT IN [THE] WADI OF KIDRON AND HE CRUSHED [IT] TO DUST AND HE THREW <OBJ.> DUST ITS ON [THE] BURIAL SITE OF [THE] SONS OF THE PEOPLE
6 He brought the Asherah pole from the house of the LORD to the Kidron Valley outside Jerusalem, and there he burned it, ground it to powder, and threw its dust on the graves of the common people.
7 AND HE BROKE DOWN <OBJ.> [THE] HOUSES OF THE MALE CULT PROSTITUTES WHICH [WERE] IN [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH WHERE THE WOMEN [WERE] WEAVING THERE CONTAINERS FOR <THE> ASHERAH
7 He also tore down the quarters of the male shrine prostitutes that were in the house of the LORD, where the women had woven tapestries for Asherah.
8 AND HE BROUGHT <OBJ.> ALL THE PRIESTS FROM [THE] CITIES OF JUDAH AND HE MADE UNCLEAN <OBJ.> THE HIGH PLACES WHERE THEY HAD MADE SMOKE THERE <TOWARDS> THE PRIESTS FROM GEBA TO BEER SHEBA AND HE BROKE DOWN <OBJ.> [THE] HIGH PLACES OF THE GATES WHICH [WERE AT] [THE] ENTRANCE OF [THE] GATE OF JOSHUA [THE] GOVERNOR OF THE CITY WHICH [WAS] AT [THE] LEFT [SIDE] OF ANYONE AT [THE] GATE OF THE CITY
8 Then Josiah brought all the priests from the cities of Judah and desecrated the high places, from Geba to Beersheba, where the priests had burned incense. He tore down the high places of the gates at the entrance of the gate of Joshua the governor of the city, which was to the left of the city gate.
9 NEVERTHELESS NOT THEY WENT UP [THE] PRIESTS OF THE HIGH PLACES TO [THE] ALTAR OF YAHWEH IN JERUSALEM THAT EXCEPT THEY ATE UNLEAVENED BREAD<S> IN AMONG BROTHERS THEIR
9 Although the priests of the high places did not come up to the altar of the LORD in Jerusalem, they ate unleavened bread with their fellow priests.
10 AND HE MADE UNCLEAN <OBJ.> <THE> TOPHETH WHICH [WAS] IN [THE] VALLEY OF BEN HINNOM TO NOT TO MAKE PASS ANYONE <OBJ.> SON HIS AND <OBJ.> DAUGHTER HIS IN THE FIRE TO <THE> MOLECH
10 He also desecrated Topheth in the Valley of Ben-hinnom so that no one could sacrifice his son or daughter in the fire to Molech.
11 AND HE REMOVED <OBJ.> THE HORSES WHICH THEY HAD DEDICATED [THE] KINGS OF JUDAH TO THE SUN FROM [THE] GOING OF [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH TO [THE] ROOM OF NATHAN MELECH THE COURT-OFFICIAL WHICH [WAS] IN THE PARBAR AND <OBJ.> [THE] CHARIOTS OF THE SUN HE BURNED WITH <THE> FIRE
11 And he removed from the entrance to the house of the LORD the horses that the kings of Judah had dedicated to the sun. They were in the court near the chamber of an official named Nathan-melech. And Josiah burned up the chariots of the sun.
12 AND <OBJ.> THE ALTARS WHICH [WERE] ON THE ROOF OF [THE] UPPER ROOM OF AHAZ WHICH THEY HAD MADE [THE] KINGS OF JUDAH AND <OBJ.> THE ALTARS WHICH HE HAD MADE MANASSEH IN [THE] TWO [THE] COURTYARDS OF [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH HE PULLED DOWN THE KING AND HE RAN FROM THERE AND HE THREW <OBJ.> DUST THEIR INTO [THE] WADI OF KIDRON
12 He pulled down the altars that the kings of Judah had set up on the roof near the upper chamber of Ahaz, and the altars that Manasseh had set up in the two courtyards of the house of the LORD. The king pulverized them there and threw their dust into the Kidron Valley.
13 AND <OBJ.> THE HIGH PLACES WHICH [WERE] ON [THE] FACE OF JERUSALEM WHICH [WERE] FROM [THE] SOUTH OF [THE] MOUNTAIN OF <THE> DESTRUCTION WHICH HE HAD BUILT SOLOMON [THE] KING OF ISRAEL TO ASTARTE [THE] DETESTABLE THING OF [THE] SIDONIANS AND TO CHEMOSH [THE] DETESTABLE THING OF MOAB AND TO MILCOM [THE] ABOMINATION OF [THE] PEOPLE OF AMMON HE MADE UNCLEAN THE KING
13 The king also desecrated the high places east of Jerusalem, to the south of the Mount of Corruption, which King Solomon of Israel had built for Ashtoreth the abomination of the Sidonians, for Chemosh the abomination of the Moabites, and for Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites.
14 AND HE BROKE <OBJ.> THE SACRED PILLARS AND HE CUT DOWN <OBJ.> THE ASHERAH POLES AND HE FILLED <OBJ.> PLACE THEIR BONES OF HUMANKIND
14 He smashed the sacred pillars to pieces, cut down the Asherah poles, and covered the sites with human bones.
15 AND ALSO <OBJ.> THE ALTAR WHICH [WAS] AT BETH- -EL THE HIGH PLACE WHICH HE HAD MADE JEROBOAM [THE] SON OF NEBAT WHO HE CAUSED TO SIN <OBJ.> ISRAEL ALSO <OBJ.> THE ALTAR <THE> THAT AND <OBJ.> THE HIGH PLACE HE TORE DOWN AND HE BURNED <OBJ.> THE HIGH PLACE HE CRUSHED [IT] TO DUST AND HE BURNED [THE] ASHERAH POLE
15 He even pulled down the altar at Bethel, the high place set up by Jeroboam son of Nebat, who had caused Israel to sin. Then he burned the high place, ground it to powder, and burned the Asherah pole.
16 AND HE TURNED JOSIAH AND HE SAW <OBJ.> THE GRAVES WHICH [WERE] THERE ON THE MOUNTAIN AND HE SENT AND HE TOOK <OBJ.> THE BONES FROM THE GRAVES AND HE BURNED [THEM] ON THE ALTAR AND HE MADE UNCLEAN IT ACCORDING TO [THE] WORD OF YAHWEH WHICH HE HAD PROCLAIMED [THE] MAN OF <THE> GOD WHO HE PROCLAIMED <OBJ.> THE WORDS <THE> THESE
16 And as Josiah turned, he saw the tombs there on the hillside, and he sent someone to take the bones out of the tombs, and he burned them on the altar to defile it, according to the word of the LORD proclaimed by the man of God who had foretold these things.
17 AND HE SAID WHAT? [IS] THE MONUMENT THIS WHICH I [AM] SEEING AND THEY SAID TO HIM [THE] PEOPLE OF THE CITY THE GRAVE OF [THE] MAN OF <THE> GOD WHO HE CAME FROM JUDAH AND HE PROCLAIMED <OBJ.> THE THINGS <THE> THESE WHICH YOU HAVE DONE ON THE ALTAR OF BETH- -EL
17 Then the king asked, “What is this monument I see?”
And the men of the city replied, “It is the tomb of the man of God who came from Judah and proclaimed these things that you have done to the altar of Bethel.”
18 AND HE SAID LEAVE ALONE <TO> HIM ANYONE MAY NOT HE DISTURB BONES HIS AND THEY LEFT UNDISTURBED BONES HIS <OBJ.> [THE] BONES OF THE PROPHET WHO HE HAD COME FROM SAMARIA
18 “Let him rest said Josiah. “Do not let anyone disturb his bones.”
So they left his bones undisturbed, along with those of the prophet who had come from Samaria.
19 AND ALSO <OBJ.> ALL [THE] HOUSES OF THE HIGH PLACES WHICH [WERE] IN [THE] CITIES OF SAMARIA WHICH THEY HAD MADE [THE] KINGS OF ISRAEL TO PROVOKE ANGER HE REMOVED JOSIAH AND HE DID TO THEM ACCORDING TO ALL THE DEEDS WHICH HE HAD DONE AT BETH- -EL
19 Just as Josiah had done at Bethel, so also in the cities of Samaria he removed all the shrines of the high places set up by the kings of Israel who had provoked the LORD to anger.
20 AND HE SLAUGHTERED <OBJ.> ALL [THE] PRIESTS OF THE HIGH PLACES WHO [WERE] THERE ON THE ALTARS AND HE BURNED <OBJ.> BONES OF HUMANKIND ON THEM AND HE RETURNED JERUSALEM
20 On the altars he slaughtered all the priests of the high places and he burned human bones on them. Then he returned to Jerusalem.
21 AND HE COMMANDED THE KING <OBJ.> ALL THE PEOPLE <TO> SAYING OBSERVE A PASSOVER TO YAHWEH GOD YOUR ACCORDING TO <THE> [WHAT] IS WRITTEN ON [THE] SCROLL OF THE COVENANT <THE> THIS
Josiah Restores the Passover
(2 Chronicles 35:1–19 )
21 The king commanded all the people, “Keep the Passover of the LORD your God, as it is written in this Book of the Covenant.”
22 FOR NOT IT HAD BEEN OBSERVED LIKE THE PASSOVER <THE> THIS SINCE [THE] DAYS OF THE JUDGES WHO THEY JUDGED <OBJ.> ISRAEL AND ALL [THE] DAYS OF [THE] KINGS OF ISRAEL AND [THE] KINGS OF JUDAH
22 No such Passover had been observed from the days of the judges who had governed Israel through all the days of the kings of Israel and Judah.
23 THAT EXCEPT IN EIGHT- TEEN YEAR OF THE KING JOSIAH IT WAS OBSERVED THE PASSOVER <THE> THIS TO YAHWEH IN JERUSALEM
23 But in the eighteenth year of Josiah’s reign, this Passover was observed to the LORD in Jerusalem.
24 AND ALSO <OBJ.> THE NECROMANCERS AND <OBJ.> THE SOOTHSAYERS AND <OBJ.> THE TERAPHIM AND <OBJ.> THE IDOLS AND <OBJ.> ALL THE DETESTABLE THINGS WHICH THEY WERE SEEN IN [THE] LAND OF JUDAH AND IN JERUSALEM HE REMOVED JOSIAH SO AS TO CARRY OUT <OBJ.> [THE] WORDS OF THE LAW WHICH WERE WRITTEN ON THE SCROLL WHICH HE HAD FOUND HILKIAH THE PRIEST [THE] HOUSE OF YAHWEH
24 Furthermore, Josiah removed the mediums and spiritists, the household gods and idols, and all the abominations that were seen in the land of Judah and in Jerusalem. He did this to carry out the words of the law written in the book that Hilkiah the priest had found in the house of the LORD.
25 AND LIKE HIM NOT HE HAD BEEN <TO> BEFORE HIM A KING WHO HE TURNED BACK TO YAHWEH WITH ALL HEART HIS AND WITH ALL BEING HIS AND WITH ALL STRENGTH HIS ACCORDING TO ALL [THE] LAW OF MOSES AND AFTER HIM NOT HE AROSE LIKE HIM
25 Neither before nor after Josiah was there any king like him, who turned to the LORD with all his heart and with all his soul and with all his strength, according to all the Law of Moses.
26 NEVERTHELESS NOT HE TURNED BACK YAHWEH FROM [THE] BURNING OF ANGER HIS <THE> GREAT WHICH IT BURNED ANGER HIS ON JUDAH ON ALL THE PROVOCATIONS WHICH HE HAD PROVOKED TO ANGER HIM MANASSEH
26 Nevertheless, the LORD did not turn away from the fury of His burning anger, which was kindled against Judah because of all that Manasseh had done to provoke Him to anger.
27 AND HE SAID YAHWEH ALSO <OBJ.> JUDAH I WILL REMOVE FROM ON FACE MY JUST AS I REMOVED <OBJ.> ISRAEL AND I WILL REJECT <OBJ.> THE CITY <THE> THIS WHICH I CHOSE <OBJ.> JERUSALEM AND <OBJ.> THE HOUSE WHICH I SAID IT WILL BE NAME MY THERE
27 For the LORD had said, “I will remove Judah from My sight, just as I removed Israel. I will reject this city Jerusalem, which I chose, and the temple of which I said, ‘My Name shall be there.’”
28 AND [THE] REST OF [THE] MATTERS OF JOSIAH AND ALL THAT HE DID ¿ NOT [ARE] THEY WRITTEN ON [THE] SCROLL OF [THE] MATTERS OF THE DAYS OF [THE] KINGS OF JUDAH
The Death of Josiah
(2 Chronicles 35:20–24 )
28 As for the rest of the acts of Josiah and all his accomplishments, are they not written in the Book of the Chronicles of the Kings of Judah?
29 IN DAYS HIS HE WENT UP PHARAOH NECHO [THE] KING OF EGYPT ON [THE] KING OF ASSYRIA TO [THE] RIVER OF EUPHRATES AND HE WENT THE KING JOSIAH TO MEET HIM AND HE KILLED HIM AT MEGIDDO WHEN SAW HE <OBJ.> HIM
29 During Josiah’s reign, Pharaoh Neco king of Egypt marched up to help the king of Assyria at the Euphrates River. King Josiah went out to confront him, but Neco faced him and killed him at Megiddo.
30 AND THEY MADE RIDE HIM SERVANTS HIS DEAD FROM MEGIDDO AND THEY BROUGHT HIM JERUSALEM AND THEY BURIED HIM IN OWN GRAVE HIS AND IT TOOK [THE] PEOPLE OF THE LAND <OBJ.> JEHOAHAZ [THE] SON OF JOSIAH AND THEY ANOINTED <OBJ.> HIM AND THEY MADE KING <OBJ.> HIM IN PLACE OF FATHER HIS
30 From Megiddo his servants carried his body in a chariot, brought him to Jerusalem, and buried him in his own tomb. Then the people of the land took Jehoahaz son of Josiah, anointed him, and made him king in place of his father.
31 [WAS] A SON OF TWENTY AND THREE YEAR[S] JEHOAHAZ WHEN BECAME KING HE AND THREE MONTHS HE REIGNED IN JERUSALEM AND [THE] NAME OF MOTHER HIS [WAS] HAMUTAL [THE] DAUGHTER OF JEREMIAH FROM LIBNAH
Jehoahaz Succeeds Josiah
(2 Chronicles 36:1–4 )
31 Jehoahaz was twenty-three years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem three months. His mother’s name was Hamutal daughter of Jeremiah; she was from Libnah.
32 AND HE DID THE EVIL IN [THE] EYES OF YAHWEH ACCORDING TO ALL THAT THEY HAD DONE ANCESTORS HIS
32 And he did evil in the sight of the LORD, just as his fathers had done.
33 AND HE CONFINED HIM PHARAOH NECHO AT RIBLAH IN [THE] LAND OF HAMATH FROM REIGNING IN JERUSALEM AND HE PUT A FINE ON THE LAND ONE HUNDRED TALENT[S] OF SILVER AND A TALENT OF GOLD
33 And Pharaoh Neco imprisoned Jehoahaz at Riblah in the land of Hamath so that he could not reign in Jerusalem, and he imposed on Judah a levy of a hundred talents of silver and a talent of gold.
34 AND HE MADE KING PHARAOH NECHO <OBJ.> ELIAKIM [THE] SON OF JOSIAH IN PLACE OF JOSIAH FATHER HIS AND HE CHANGED <OBJ.> NAME HIS JEHOIAKIM AND <OBJ.> JEHOAHAZ HE TOOK AND HE CAME EGYPT AND HE DIED THERE
34 Then Pharaoh Neco made Eliakim son of Josiah king in place of his father Josiah, and he changed Eliakim’s name to Jehoiakim. But Neco took Jehoahaz and carried him off to Egypt, where he died.
35 AND THE SILVER AND THE GOLD HE GAVE JEHOIAKIM TO PHARAOH ONLY HE TAXED <OBJ.> THE LAND TO GIVE <OBJ.> THE SILVER ON [THE] MOUTH OF PHARAOH EACH ACCORDING TO VALUATION HIS HE EXACTED <OBJ.> THE SILVER AND <OBJ.> THE GOLD <OBJ.> [THE] PEOPLE OF THE LAND TO GIVE [IT] TO PHARAOH NECHO
35 So Jehoiakim paid the silver and gold to Pharaoh Neco, but to meet Pharaoh’s demand he taxed the land and exacted the silver and the gold from the people, each according to his wealth.
36 [WAS] A SON OF TWENTY AND FIVE YEAR[S] JEHOIAKIM WHEN BECAME KING HE AND ONE [PLUS] TEN YEAR[S] HE REIGNED IN JERUSALEM AND [THE] NAME OF MOTHER HIS [WAS] ZEBUDAH [THE] DAUGHTER OF PEDAIAH FROM RUMAH
Jehoiakim Reigns in Judah
(2 Chronicles 36:5–8 )
36 Jehoiakim was twenty-five years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eleven years. His mother’s name was Zebidah daughter of Pedaiah; she was from Rumah.
37 AND HE DID THE EVIL IN [THE] EYES OF YAHWEH ACCORDING TO ALL THAT THEY HAD DONE ANCESTORS HIS
37 And he did evil in the sight of the LORD, just as his fathers had done.
