33AND HE WENT JOAB TO THE KING AND HE TOLD TO <THE> HIM AND HE SUMMONED <TO> ABSALOM AND HE CAME TO THE KING AND HE BOWED DOWN TO <THE> HIM ON FACE HIS [THE] GROUND TOWARDS <TO> BEFORE THE KING AND HE KISSED THE KING <TO> ABSALOM 33So Joab went and told the king, and David summoned Absalom, who came to him and bowed facedown before him. Then the king kissed Absalom.
1AND IT WAS FROM AFTER THUS AND HE ACQUIRED FOR <THE> HIMSELF ABSALOM A CHARIOT AND HORSES AND FIFTY MAN [WHO] RAN <TO> BEFORE HIM Absalom’s Conspiracy 1Some time later, Absalom provided for himself a chariot with horses and fifty men to run ahead of him.
2AND HE ROSE EARLY ABSALOM AND HE STOOD AT [THE] SIDE OF [THE] ROAD OF THE GATE AND IT WAS EVERY <THE> PERSON WHOM IT BELONGED TO <THE> HIM A CASE AT LAW TO COME TO THE KING FOR <THE> JUDGMENT AND HE CALLED OUT ABSALOM TO HIM AND HE SAID WHERE? FROM THIS CITY [ARE] YOU AND HE SAID [IS] FROM ONE OF [THE] TRIBES OF ISRAEL SERVANT YOUR 2He would get up early and stand beside the road leading to the city gate. Whenever anyone had a grievance to bring before the king for a decision, Absalom would call out and ask, “What city are you from?” And if he replied, “Your servant is from one of the tribes of Israel,”
3AND HE SAID TO HIM ABSALOM SEE MATTER YOUR [ARE] GOOD AND RIGHT AND [ONE WHO] HEARS NOT [BELONGS] TO <THE> YOU FROM WITH THE KING 3Absalom would say, “Look, your claims are good and right, but the king has no deputy to hear you.”
4AND HE SAID ABSALOM WHO? WILL HE MAKE ME A JUDGE IN THE LAND AND TO ME HE WILL COME EVERY PERSON WHOM IT BELONGS TO <THE> HIM A CASE AT LAW AND A JUDGMENT AND I WILL DO JUSTICE HIM 4And he would add, “If only someone would appoint me judge in the land, then everyone with a grievance or dispute could come to me, and I would give him justice.”
5AND IT WAS WHEN DREW NEAR ANYONE TO BOW DOWN TO <THE> HIM AND HE STRETCHED OUT <OBJ.> HAND HIS AND HE TOOK HOLD OF <TO> <THE> HIM AND HE KISSED <TO> <THE> HIM 5Also, when anyone approached to bow down to him, Absalom would reach out his hand, take hold of him, and kiss him.
6AND HE DID ABSALOM ACCORDING TO THE MANNER <THE> THIS TO ALL ISRAEL WHO THEY CAME FOR <THE> JUDGMENT TO THE KING AND HE STOLE ABSALOM <OBJ.> [THE] HEART OF [THE] MEN OF ISRAEL 6Absalom did this to all the Israelites who came to the king for justice. In this way he stole the hearts of the men of Israel.
7AND IT WAS FROM [THE] END OF FORTY YEAR[S] AND HE SAID ABSALOM TO THE KING LET ME GO PLEASE SO I MAY PAY <OBJ.> VOW MY WHICH I VOWED TO YAHWEH IN HEBRON 7After four*NoteCloseSyriac and some LXX manuscripts; Hebrew forty years had passed, Absalom said to the king, “Please let me go to Hebron to fulfill a vow I have made to the LORD.
8FOR A VOW HE VOWED SERVANT YOUR WHEN DWELT I AT GESHUR IN ARAM <TO> SAYING IF CERTAINLY <TO DWELL> HE WILL BRING BACK ME YAHWEH JERUSALEM AND I WILL SERVE <OBJ.> YAHWEH IN HEBRON 8For your servant made a vow while dwelling in Geshur of Aram, saying: ‘If indeed the LORD brings me back to Jerusalem, I will worship the LORD in Hebron.’*NoteCloseSome LXX manuscripts; Hebrew does not include in Hebron. ”
9AND HE SAID TO <THE> HIM THE KING GO IN PEACE AND HE AROSE AND HE WENT HEBRON TOWARDS 9“Go in peace,” said the king So Absalom got up and went to Hebron.
10AND HE SENT ABSALOM SPIES IN ALL [THE] TRIBES OF ISRAEL <TO> SAYING WHEN HEAR YOU <OBJ.> [THE] SOUND OF THE RAM'S HORN AND YOU WILL SAY HE HAS BECOME KING ABSALOM IN HEBRON 10Then Absalom sent spies throughout the tribes of Israel with this message: “When you hear the sound of the horn, you are to say, ‘Absalom reigns in Hebron!’”
11AND WITH ABSALOM THEY WENT TWO HUNDRED MAN FROM JERUSALEM [THOSE WHO] WERE INVITED AND [THOSE WHO] WERE GOING TO INNOCENCE THEIR AND NOT THEY KNEW ANY THING 11Two hundred men from Jerusalem accompanied Absalom. They had been invited as guests and they went along innocently, for they knew nothing about the matter.
12AND HE SENT ABSALOM <OBJ.> AHITHOPHEL THE GILONITE [THE] COUNSELOR OF DAVID FROM CITY HIS FROM GILOH WHEN SACRIFICED HE <OBJ.> THE SACRIFICES AND IT WAS THE CONSPIRACY STRONG AND THE PEOPLE [WAS] GOING AND NUMEROUS WITH ABSALOM 12While Absalom was offering the sacrifices, he sent for Ahithophel the Gilonite, David’s counselor, to come from his hometown of Giloh. So the conspiracy gained strength, and Absalom’s following kept increasing.
13AND HE CAME THE MESSENGER TO DAVID <TO> SAYING IT IS [THE] HEART OF [THE] MAN OF ISRAEL AFTER ABSALOM David Flees Jerusalem (Psalm 3:1–8) 13Then a messenger came to David and reported, “The hearts of the men of Israel are with Absalom.”
14AND HE SAID DAVID TO ALL SERVANTS HIS WHO [WERE] WITH HIM IN JERUSALEM ARISE SO LET US FLEE FOR NOT IT WILL BELONG TO <THE> US AN ESCAPE FROM BEFORE ABSALOM HURRY TO GO LEST HE SHOULD HURRY AND HE WILL OVERTAKE US AND HE WILL THRUST ON US <OBJ.> <THE> CALAMITY AND HE WILL STRIKE THE CITY TO [THE] MOUTH OF [THE] SWORD 14And David said to all the servants with him in Jerusalem, “Arise and let us flee, or we will not escape from Absalom! We must leave quickly, or he will soon overtake us, heap disaster on us, and put the city to the sword.”
15AND THEY SAID [THE] SERVANTS OF THE KING TO THE KING ACCORDING TO ALL THAT HE WILL CHOOSE LORD MY THE KING HERE! [ARE] SERVANTS YOUR 15The king’s servants replied “Whatever our lord the king decides, we are your servants.”
16AND HE WENT OUT THE KING AND ALL HOUSEHOLD HIS AT FEET HIS AND HE LEFT THE KING <OBJ.> TEN WOMEN CONCUBINES TO KEEP THE HOUSE 16Then the king set out, and his entire household followed him. But he left behind ten concubines to take care of the palace.
17AND HE WENT OUT THE KING AND ALL THE PEOPLE AT FEET HIS AND THEY STOOD [THE] HOUSE OF THE DISTANCE 17So the king set out with all the people following him. He stopped at the last house,
18AND ALL SERVANTS HIS [WERE] PASSING BY AT SIDE HIS AND ALL THE KERETHITE[S] AND ALL THE PELETHITE[S] AND ALL THE GITTITES SIX HUNDRED<S> MAN WHO THEY HAD COME AT FOOT HIS FROM GATH [WERE] PASSING BY AT [THE] FACE OF THE KING 18and all his servants marched past him— all the Cherethites and Pelethites, and six hundred Gittites who had followed him from Gath.
19AND HE SAID THE KING TO ITTAI THE GITTITE <TO> WHY? WILL YOU GO ALSO YOU WITH US RETURN AND DWELL WITH THE KING FOR [ARE] A FOREIGNER YOU AND ALSO [ARE] AN EXILE YOU TO PLACE YOUR 19Then the king said to Ittai the Gittite, “Why should you also go with us? Go back and stay with the new king, since you are both a foreigner and an exile from your homeland.
20[WAS] YESTERDAY COMING YOU AND THIS DAY WILL I MAKE WANDER? YOU WITH US TO GO AND I [AM] GOING TO WHERE I [AM] GOING RETURN AND TAKE BACK <OBJ.> BROTHERS YOUR [BE] WITH YOU COVENANT LOYALTY AND TRUTH 20In fact, you arrived only yesterday; should I make you wander around with us today while I do not know where I am going Go back and take your brothers with you. 21AND HE ANSWERED ITTAI <OBJ.> THE KING AND HE SAID [BY] [THE] LIFE OF YAHWEH AND [BY] [THE] LIFE OF LORD MY THE KING THAT EXCEPT IN [THE] PLACE <OF> WHERE HE WILL BE THERE LORD MY THE KING WHETHER FOR DEATH OR FOR LIFE FOR THERE HE WILL BE SERVANT YOUR 21But Ittai answered the king, “As surely as the LORD lives, and as my lord the king lives, wherever my lord the king may be, whether it means life or death, there will your servant be!”
22AND HE SAID DAVID TO ITTAI COME AND PASS ON AND HE PASSED ON ITTAI THE GITTITE AND ALL MEN HIS AND ALL THE LITTLE ONE[S] WHO [WERE] WITH HIM 22“March on then,” said David to Ittai. So Ittai the Gittite marched past with all his men and all the little ones who were with him.
23AND ALL THE LAND [WERE] WEEPING A VOICE GREAT AND ALL THE PEOPLE [WERE] PASSING BY AND THE KING [WAS] PASSING IN [THE] WADI OF KIDRON AND ALL THE PEOPLE [WERE] PASSING ON ON [THE] FACE OF [THE] ROAD <OBJ.> THE WILDERNESS 23Everyone in the countryside was weeping loudly as all the people passed by. And as the king crossed the Kidron Valley, all the people also passed toward the way of the wilderness.
24AND THERE! ALSO ZADOK AND ALL THE LEVITES WITH HIM [WERE] CARRYING <OBJ.> [THE] ARK OF [THE] COVENANT OF <THE> GOD AND THEY SET DOWN <OBJ.> [THE] ARK OF <THE> GOD AND HE WENT UP ABIATHAR UNTIL WAS FINISHED ALL THE PEOPLE TO PASS OUT FROM THE CITY 24Zadok was also there, and all the Levites with him were carrying the ark of the covenant of God. And they set down the ark of God and Abiathar offered sacrifices*NoteCloseOr Abiathar went up until all the people had passed out of the city.
25AND HE SAID THE KING TO ZADOK TAKE BACK <OBJ.> [THE] ARK OF <THE> GOD THE CITY IF I WILL FIND FAVOR IN [THE] EYES OF YAHWEH AND HE WILL BRING BACK ME AND HE WILL SHOW ME <OBJ.> IT AND <OBJ.> HABITATION HIS 25Then the king said to Zadok, “Return the ark of God to the city. If I find favor in the eyes of the LORD, He will bring me back and let me see both it and His dwelling place again.
26AND IF THUS HE WILL SAY NOT I DELIGHT IN <THE> YOU HERE [AM] I LET HIM DO TO <THE> ME JUST AS IT IS GOOD IN VIEW HIS 26But if He should say, ‘I do not delight in you,’ then here I am; let Him do to me whatever seems good to Him.”
27AND HE SAID THE KING TO ZADOK THE PRIEST ¿ A SEER [ARE] YOU RETURN! THE CITY IN PEACE AND AHIMAAZ SON YOUR AND JONATHAN [THE] SON OF ABIATHAR [THE] TWO SONS YOUR WITH YOU 27The king also said to Zadok the priest, “Are you not a seer?*NoteCloseHebrew; LXX Behold, Return to the city in peace— you with your son Ahimaaz, and Abiathar with his son Jonathan.*NoteCloseLiterally your son Ahimaaz and Jonathan son of Abiathar, your two sons with you
28SEE I [WILL] DELAY IN [THE] DESERT PLAINS OF THE WILDERNESS UNTIL COMES WORD FROM WITH <THE> YOU TO TELL TO <THE> ME 28See, I will wait at the fords of the wilderness until word comes from you to inform me.”
29AND HE TOOK BACK ZADOK AND ABIATHAR <OBJ.> [THE] ARK OF <THE> GOD JERUSALEM AND THEY REMAINED THERE 29So Zadok and Abiathar returned the ark of God to Jerusalem and stayed there.
30AND DAVID [WAS] GOING UP ON [THE] ASCENT OF THE OLIVE TREES GOING UP AND WEEPING AND HEAD OF HIM [WAS] COVERED AND HE [WAS] WALKING BAREFOOT AND ALL THE PEOPLE WHICH [WAS] WITH HIM THEY COVERED EACH HEAD HIS AND THEY WENT UP CONTINUOUSLY <TO GO> AND WEPT David Weeps at the Mount of Olives (Psalm 63:1–11) 30But David continued up the Mount of Olives, weeping as he went up. His head was covered, and he was walking barefoot. And all the people with him covered their heads and went up, weeping as they went.
31AND DAVID SOMEONE TOLD <TO> SAYING AHITHOPHEL [IS] AMONG THE CONSPIRATORS WITH ABSALOM AND HE SAID DAVID MAKE FOOLISH PLEASE <OBJ.> [THE] COUNSEL OF AHITHOPHEL O YAHWEH 31Now someone told David: “Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom.” So David pleaded, “O LORD, please turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness!”
32AND HE WAS DAVID COMING TO THE TOP WHERE HE BOWED DOWN THERE TO GOD AND THERE! TO MEET HIM HUSHAI THE ARKITE [WAS] TORN TUNIC HIS AND EARTH [WAS] ON HEAD HIS 32When David came to the summit, where he used to worship God, Hushai the Archite was there to meet him with his robe torn and dust on his head.
33AND HE SAID TO <THE> HIM DAVID IF YOU PASS OVER WITH ME AND YOU WILL BECOME ON ME <INTO> A BURDEN 33David said to him, “If you go on with me, you will be a burden to me.
34AND IF THE CITY YOU WILL RETURN AND YOU WILL SAY TO ABSALOM SERVANT YOUR I O KING I WILL BE [WAS] [THE] SERVANT OF FATHER YOUR <AND> I FROM THEN AND NOW <AND> I [WILL BE] SERVANT YOUR AND YOU WILL FRUSTRATE FOR <THE> ME <OBJ.> [THE] COUNSEL OF AHITHOPHEL 34But you can thwart the counsel of Ahithophel for me if you return to the city and say to Absalom: ‘I will be your servant, my king; in the past I was your father’s servant, but now I will be your servant.’
35AND ¿ NOT WITH YOU THERE [ARE] ZADOK AND ABIATHAR THE PRIESTS AND IT WILL BE EVERY <THE> WORD WHICH YOU WILL HEAR FROM [THE] HOUSE OF THE KING YOU WILL TELL TO ZADOK AND TO ABIATHAR THE PRIESTS 35Will not Zadok and Abiathar the priests be there with you? Report to them everything you hear from the king’s palace.
36THERE! THERE [ARE] WITH THEM [THE] TWO SONS THEIR AHIMAAZ OF ZADOK AND JONATHAN OF ABIATHAR AND YOU WILL SEND BY HAND THEIR TO ME EVERY WORD WHICH YOU WILL HEAR 36Indeed, their two sons, Ahimaaz son of Zadok and Jonathan son of Abiathar, are there with them. Send them to me with everything you hear.”
37AND HE CAME HUSHAI [THE] FRIEND OF DAVID THE CITY AND ABSALOM HE CAME JERUSALEM 37So David’s friend Hushai arrived in Jerusalem just as Absalom was entering the city.
