1 HAVING PASSED THROUGH THEN <THE> AMPHIPOLIS AND <THE> APOLLONIA THEY CAME TO THESSALONICA, WHERE WAS THE A SYNAGOGUE OF THE JEWS.
The Uproar in Thessalonica
1 When they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a Jewish synagogue.
2 ACCORDING TO NOW THE BEING CUSTOMARY <THE> WITH PAUL HE WENT IN TO THEM, AND FOR SABBATHS THREE HE REASONED WITH THEM FROM THE SCRIPTURES,
2 As was his custom, Paul went into the synagogue, and on three Sabbaths he reasoned with them from the Scriptures,
3 OPENING AND SETTING FORTH THAT THE CHRIST IT WAS BEING NECESSARY TO HAVE SUFFERED AND TO HAVE RISEN OUT FROM [THE] DEAD AND THAT THIS IS THE CHRIST <THE> JESUS WHOM I MYSELF PREACH TO YOU.
3 explaining and proving that the Christ had to suffer and rise from the dead. “This Jesus I am proclaiming to you is the Christ, ” he declared.
4 AND SOME OF THEM WERE OBEDIENT AND THEY JOINED THEMSELVES <THE> TO PAUL AND <THE> TO SILAS, <THE> ALONG WITH WORSHIPPING GREEKS A MULTITUDE GREAT OF WOMEN THEN <THE> LEADING NOT A FEW.
4 Some of the Jews were persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, along with a large number of God-fearing Greeks and quite a few leading women.
5 HAVING BECOME JEALOUS NOW THE [BEING] DISOBEDIENT <THE> JEWS AND HAVING TAKEN TO [THEM] OF THE MARKET-LOUNGERS MEN CERTAIN WICKED AND HAVING COLLECTED A CROWD THEY WERE SETTING IN UPROAR THE CITY, AND HAVING ASSAILED THE HOUSE OF JASON THEY WERE SEEKING THEM TO BRING OUT TO THE PEOPLE;
5 The Jews, however, became jealous. So they brought in some troublemakers from the marketplace, formed a mob, and sent the city into an uproar They raided Jason’s house in search of Paul and Silas, hoping to bring them out to the people.
6 NOT HAVING FOUND HOWEVER THEM THEY WERE DRAGGING <THE> JASON AND CERTAIN BROTHERS BEFORE THE CITY AUTHORITIES CRYING OUT THAT THE [ONES] THE WORLD HAVING UPSET THESE ALSO HERE ARE COME,
6 But when they could not find them, they dragged Jason and some other brothers before the city officials, shouting “These men who have turned the world upside down have now come here,
7 WHOM HAS RECEIVED JASON; AND THESE ALL CONTRARY TO THE DECREES OF CAESAR DO KING ANOTHER PROCLAIMING TO BE JESUS.
7 and Jason has welcomed them into his home They are all defying Caesar’s decrees, saying that there is another king, named Jesus! ”
8 THEY STIRRED UP THEN THE CROWD AND THE CITY AUTHORITIES HEARING THESE THINGS;
8 On hearing this, the crowd and city officials were greatly disturbed.
9 AND HAVING TAKEN <THE> SECURITY FROM <THE> JASON AND THE REST THEY LET GO THEM.
9 And they collected bond from Jason and the others and then released them.
10 <THE> AND THE BROTHERS IMMEDIATELY THROUGH <THE> NIGHT SENT AWAY <THE> BOTH PAUL AND <THE> SILAS TO BEREA, WHO HAVING ARRIVED INTO THE SYNAGOGUE OF THE JEWS WERE GOING.
The Character of the Bereans
10 As soon as night had fallen, the brothers sent Paul and Silas away to Berea. On arriving there, they went into the Jewish synagogue.
11 THESE NOW WERE MORE NOBLE THAN THOSE IN THESSALONICA, WHO RECEIVED THE WORD WITH ALL READINESS <THE> EVERY DAY EXAMINING THE SCRIPTURES IF WOULD BE THESE THINGS SO.
11 Now the Bereans were more noble-minded than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if these teachings were true.
12 MANY INDEED THEREFORE OF THEM BELIEVED, AND OF THE GRECIAN WOMEN <THE> PROMINENT AND MEN NOT A FEW.
12 As a result, many of them believed, along with quite a few prominent Greek women and men.
13 WHEN HOWEVER KNEW THOSE FROM <THE> THESSALONICA JEWS THAT ALSO IN <THE> BEREA WAS PROCLAIMED BY <THE> PAUL THE WORD <THE> OF GOD, THEY CAME THERE ALSO STIRRING UP AND AGITATING THE CROWDS.
13 But when the Jews from Thessalonica learned that Paul was also proclaiming the word of God in Berea, they went there themselves to incite and agitate the crowds.
14 IMMEDIATELY ALSO THEN <THE> PAUL SENT AWAY THE BROTHERS TO GO UNTIL TO THE SEA; REMAINED BUT <THE> BOTH SILAS AND <THE> TIMOTHY THERE.
14 The brothers immediately sent Paul to the coast, but Silas and Timothy remained in Berea.
15 THOSE NOW ESCORTING <THE> PAUL BROUGHT HIM UNTO ATHENS, AND HAVING RECEIVED A COMMAND UNTO <THE> SILAS AND <THE> TIMOTHY THAT AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE THEY MAY COME TO HIM THEY WERE DEPARTING.
15 Those who escorted Paul brought him to Athens and then returned with instructions for Silas and Timothy to join him as soon as possible.
16 IN NOW <THE> ATHENS IS WAITING FOR THEM <THE> PAUL WAS PROVOKED THE SPIRIT OF HIM IN HIM SEEING UTTERLY IDOLATROUS TO BE THE CITY.
Paul in Athens
16 While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he was deeply disturbed in his spirit to see that the city was full of idols.
17 HE WAS REASONING INDEED THEREFORE IN THE SYNAGOGUE WITH THE JEWS AND WITH THOSE WORSHIPING AND IN THE MARKETPLACE ON EVERY DAY WITH THOSE MEETING [HIM];
17 So he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and God-fearing Gentiles, and in the marketplace with those he met each day.
18 SOME THEN ALSO OF THE EPICUREANS AND OF THE STOICS PHILOSOPHERS WERE ENCOUNTERING HIM; AND SOME WERE SAYING; WHAT MAYBE WOULD INTEND <THE> BABBLER THIS TO SAY? OTHERS HOWEVER; OF FOREIGN GODS HE SEEMS A PROCLAIMER TO BE; BECAUSE <THE> JESUS AND THE RESURRECTION TO THEM HE WAS EVANGELISING.
18 Some Epicurean and Stoic philosophers also began to debate with him. Some of them asked, “What is this babbler trying to say? ” Others said, “He seems to be advocating foreign gods. ” They said this because Paul was proclaiming the good news of Jesus and the resurrection.
19 HAVING TAKEN HOLD ALSO OF HIM TO THE ARES HILL THEY BROUGHT [HIM] SAYING; ARE WE ABLE TO KNOW WHAT [IS] <THE> NEW THIS WHICH BY YOU IS SPOKEN TEACHING?
19 So they took Paul and brought him to the Areopagus, where they asked him, “May we know what this new teaching is that you are presenting?
20 STRANGE THINGS FOR SOME YOU ARE BRINGING TO THE EARS OF US; WE RESOLVE THEREFORE TO KNOW WHAT [THINGS] MAYBE INTENDS THESE THINGS TO BE.
20 For you are bringing some strange notions to our ears, and we want to know what they mean. ”
21 [THE] ATHENIANS NOW ALL AND THE VISITING STRANGERS IN NO [THING] ELSE WERE SPENDING THEIR TIME THAN TO TELL SOMETHING AND TO HEAR SOMETHING NEW.
21 Now all the Athenians and foreigners who lived there spent their time doing nothing more than hearing and articulating new ideas.
22 HAVING STOOD THEN <THE> PAUL IN [THE] MIDST OF THE ARES HILL HE WAS SAYING; MEN ATHENIANS, IN ALL THINGS AS VERY RELIGIOUS YOU I BEHOLD;
Paul’s Address in the Areopagus
22 Then Paul stood up in the meeting of the Areopagus and said, “Men of Athens, I see that in every way you are very religious.
23 PASSING THROUGH FOR AND BEHOLDING THE OBJECTS OF WORSHIP OF YOU I FOUND EVEN AN ALTAR ON WHICH HAD BEEN INSCRIBED: TO AN UNKNOWN GOD. WHOM THEREFORE NOT KNOWING YOU WORSHIP, HIM I MYSELF PROCLAIM TO YOU.
23 For as I walked around and examined your objects of worship, I even found an altar with this inscription:
TO AN UNKNOWN GOD. </div>
Therefore what you worship as something unknown, I now proclaim to you.
24 THE GOD WHO HAVING MADE THE WORLD AND ALL THINGS THAT [ARE] IN IT, HE OF HEAVEN AND EARTH BEING LORD NOT IN HAND-MADE TEMPLES DWELLS,
24 The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples made by human hands.
25 NOR BY HANDS HUMAN IS HE SERVED AS NEEDING ANYTHING, HIMSELF GIVING TO ALL LIFE AND BREATH AND THE ALL;
25 Nor is He served by human hands, as if He needed anything, because He Himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else.
26 HE MADE THEN OF ONE BLOOD EVERY NATION OF MEN TO DWELL UPON ALL [THE] FACE OF THE EARTH, DETERMINING ORDERED TIMES AND THE BOUNDARIES OF THE HABITATION OF THEM
26 From one man He made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and He determined their appointed times and the boundaries of their lands.
27 TO SEEK <THE> GOD, IF PERHAPS INDEED THEY WOULD TOUCH HIM AND WOULD FIND [HIM], AND INDEED NOT FAR FROM ONE EACH OF US HE IS.
27 God intended that they would seek Him and perhaps reach out for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us.
28 IN HIM FOR WE LIVE AND MOVE AND ARE,’ AS ALSO SOME OF THE AMONG YOU POETS HAVE SAID; OF [HIM] FOR ALSO OFFSPRING WE ARE.’
28 ‘For in Him we live and move and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, We are His offspring.’
29 OFFSPRING THEREFORE BEING <THE> OF GOD NOT WE OUGHT TO CONSIDER TO GOLD OR TO SILVER OR TO STONE, A GRAVEN THING OF CRAFT AND IMAGINATION OF MAN, THE DIVINE BEING TO BE LIKE.
29 Therefore, being offspring of God, we should not think that the Divine Being is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by man’s skill and imagination.
30 THE INDEED THEREFORE TIMES <THE> OF IGNORANCE HAVING OVERLOOKED <THE> GOD <THE> NOW HE COMMANDS <THE> TO MEN ALL EVERYWHERE TO REPENT;
30 Although God overlooked the ignorance of earlier times, He now commands all people everywhere to repent.
31 JUST AS HE SET A DAY IN WHICH HE IS ABOUT TO JUDGE THE WORLD IN RIGHTEOUSNESS BY A MAN WHOM HE APPOINTED A GUARANTEE HAVING PROVIDED TO ALL, HAVING RAISED HIM OUT FROM [THE] DEAD.
31 For He has set a day when He will judge the world with justice by the Man He has appointed. He has given proof of this to everyone by raising Him from the dead. ”
32 HAVING HEARD OF NOW A RESURRECTION OF [THE] DEAD SOME INDEED WERE MOCKING [HIM], SOME HOWEVER SAID; WE WILL HEAR YOU CONCERNING THIS ALSO AGAIN.
32 When they heard about the resurrection of the dead, some began to mock him, but others said, “We want to hear you again on this topic. ”
33 AND THUS <THE> PAUL WENT OUT FROM [THE] MIDST OF THEM.
33 At that Paul left the Areopagus.
34 SOME HOWEVER MEN HAVING JOINED THEMSELVES TO HIM BELIEVED, AMONG WHOM ALSO [WERE] DIONYSIUS THE AREOPAGITE AND A WOMAN NAMED DAMARIS AND OTHERS WITH THEM.
34 But some joined him and believed, including Dionysius the Areopagite, a woman named Damaris, and others who were with them.
