34SOME HOWEVER MEN HAVING JOINED THEMSELVES TO HIM BELIEVED, AMONG WHOM ALSO [WERE] DIONYSIUS THE AREOPAGITE AND A WOMAN NAMED DAMARIS AND OTHERS WITH THEM. 34But some*NoteCloseLiterally some men joined him and believed, including Dionysius the Areopagite, a woman named Damaris, and others who were with them.
1AND AFTER NOW THESE THINGS HAVING DEPARTED <THE> PAUL FROM <THE> ATHENS HE CAME TO CORINTH, Paul Ministers in Corinth (1 Corinthians 1:1–3; 2 Corinthians 1:1–2) 1After this, Paul left Athens and went to Corinth.
2AND HAVING FOUND A CERTAIN JEW NAMED AQUILA, OF PONTUS <THE> A NATIVE, RECENTLY HAVING COME FROM <THE> ITALY, AND PRISCILLA WIFE OF HIM, BECAUSE OF <THE> TO HAVE COMMANDED CLAUDIUS TO DEPART ALL THE JEWS OUT OF <THE> ROME, HE CAME TO THEM; 2There he found a Jew named Aquila a native of Pontus, who had recently come from Italy with his wife Priscilla because Claudius had ordered all the Jews to leave Rome. Paul went to visit them,
3AND DUE TO OF THE SAME TRADE BEING HE WAS STAYING WITH THEM AND HE WAS WORKING; THEY WERE FOR TENTMAKERS <THE> BY TRADE; 3and he stayed and worked with them because they were tentmakers by trade, just as he was.
4HE WAS REASONING NOW IN THE SYNAGOGUE ON EVERY SABBATH, WAS PERSUADING BOTH JEWS AND GREEKS. 4Every Sabbath he reasoned in the synagogue, trying to persuade Jews and Greeks alike.
5WHEN NOW CAME DOWN FROM <THE> MACEDONIA <THE> BOTH SILAS AND <THE> TIMOTHY, WAS OCCUPIED WITH THE WORD <THE> PAUL EARNESTLY TESTIFYING TO THE JEWS TO BE THE CHRIST JESUS. 5And when Silas and Timothy came down from Macedonia, Paul devoted himself fully to the word, testifying to the Jews that Jesus is the Christ.
6WHEN ARE OPPOSING HOWEVER THEY AND DENIGRATING [HIM], HAVING SHAKEN OUT THE GARMENTS HE SAID TO THEM; THE BLOOD OF YOU [BE] UPON THE HEAD OF YOU, CLEAN I MYSELF [AM]; FROM <THE> NOW ON TO THE GENTILES I WILL GO. 6But when they opposed and insulted him, he shook out his garments and told them, “Your blood be on your own heads! I am innocent of it. From now on I will go to the Gentiles. ”
7AND HAVING DEPARTED FROM THERE HE ENTERED TO [THE] HOUSE OF A CERTAIN ONE NAMED TITIUS JUSTUS WORSHIPING THE GOD, OF WHOM THE HOUSE WAS ADJOINING TO THE SYNAGOGUE. 7So Paul left the synagogue and went next door to the house of Titus Justus,*NoteCloseECM; SBL, NE, and WH Titius Justus; BYZ and TR Justus a worshiper of God.
8CRISPUS NOW THE RULER OF THE SYNAGOGUE BELIEVED IN THE LORD WITH ALL THE HOUSEHOLD OF HIM, AND MANY OF THE CORINTHIANS HEARING WERE BELIEVING AND WERE BAPTIZED. 8Crispus, the synagogue leader, and his whole household believed in the Lord. And many of the Corinthians who heard the message believed and were baptized.
9SAID NOW THE LORD IN [THE] NIGHT THROUGH A VISION <THE> TO PAUL; NOT DO FEAR BUT DO CONTINUE SPEAKING AND NOT MAY BE SILENT, 9One night the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision: “Do not be afraid; keep on speaking; do not be silent.
10BECAUSE I MYSELF AM WITH YOU, AND NO [ONE] WILL LAY A HAND ON YOU <THE> TO HARM YOU; BECAUSE PEOPLE THERE IS TO ME MANY IN <THE> CITY THIS; 10For I am with you and no one will lay a hand on you, because I have many people in this city. ”
11HE REMAINED NOW A YEAR AND MONTHS SIX TEACHING AMONG THEM THE WORD <THE> OF GOD. 11So Paul stayed for a year and a half, teaching the word of God among the Corinthians.
12WHEN GALLIO HOWEVER PROCONSUL BEING <THE> OF ACHAIA ROSE UP WITH ONE ACCORD THE JEWS <THE> AGAINST PAUL AND LED HIM TO THE JUDGMENT SEAT, Paul before Gallio 12While Gallio was proconsul of Achaia, the Jews coordinated an attack on Paul and brought him before the judgment seat.
13SAYING THAT CONTRARY TO THE LAW PERSUADES THIS [MAN] <THE> MEN TO WORSHIP <THE> GOD. 13“This man is persuading the people to worship God in ways contrary to the law, ” they said.
14WHEN IS BEING ABOUT TO NOW <THE> PAUL TO OPEN <THE> [HIS] MOUTH SAID <THE> GALLIO TO THE JEWS; IF INDEED THEREFORE IT WAS UNRIGHTEOUSNESS SOME OR CRIME WICKED, O JEWS, ACCORDING TO REASON WOULD I HAVE ENDURED WITH YOU; 14But just as Paul was about to speak Gallio told the Jews, “If this matter involved a wrongdoing or vicious crime, O Jews, it would be reasonable for me to hear your complaint.
15IF HOWEVER QUESTIONS IT IS ABOUT A WORD AND NAMES AND LAW <THE> OF YOURS, YOU WILL BEHOLD [TO IT] YOURSELVES; A JUDGE FOR I MYSELF OF THESE THINGS NOT RESOLVE TO BE. 15But since it is a dispute about words and names and your own law, settle it yourselves. I refuse to be a judge of such things. ”
17HAVING SEIZED THEN ALL [OF THEM] THE GREEKS SOSTHENES THE RULER OF THE SYNAGOGUE THEY WERE BEATING [HIM] BEFORE THE JUDGMENT SEAT; AND NO [THING] ABOUT THESE THINGS <THE> TO GALLIO WAS CONCERNING. 17At this, the crowd*NoteCloseLiterally they all; BYZ and TR all the Greeks seized Sosthenes the synagogue leader and beat him in front of the judgment seat. But none of this was of concern to Gallio.
18<THE> NOW PAUL MORE HAVING REMAINED DAYS MANY, OF THE BROTHERS HAVING TAKEN LEAVE HE WAS SAILING AWAY TO <THE> SYRIA — AND WITH HIM PRISCILLA AND AQUILA — HAVING SHAVED IN CENCHREA THE HEAD; HE HAD FOR A VOW. Paul Returns to Antioch 18Paul remained in Corinth for quite some time before saying goodbye to the brothers. He had his head shaved in Cenchrea to keep a vow he had made and then he sailed for Syria, accompanied by Priscilla and Aquila.
19THEY CAME NOW TO EPHESUS; AND THEM LEFT THERE, HE HIMSELF THEN HAVING ENTERED INTO THE SYNAGOGUE HE REASONED WITH THE JEWS. 19When they reached Ephesus, Paul left Priscilla and Aquila. He himself went into the synagogue there and reasoned with the Jews.
20WHEN ARE ASKING NOW THEY FOR [HIM] A LONGER TIME TO REMAIN WITH THEM NOT HE DID CONSENT; 20When they asked him to stay for a while longer he declined.
21BUT HAVING TAKEN LEAVE AND TO THEM HAVING SAID NECESSARY ME BY ALL MEANS THE FEAST WHICH IS COMING TO DO INTO JERUSALEM; AGAIN NOW I WILL RETURN TO YOU <THE> GOD WILLING, AND HE SAILED FROM <THE> EPHESUS. 21But as he left, he said, I will come back*NoteCloseBYZ and TR I must by all means keep this feast that comes in Jerusalem, but I will come back to you if God is willing. ” And he set sail from Ephesus.
22AND HAVING LANDED AT CAESAREA, HAVING GONE UP AND HAVING GREETED THE CHURCH HE WENT DOWN TO ANTIOCH; 22When Paul had landed at Caesarea, he went up and greeted the church at Jerusalem.*NoteCloseLiterally he went up and greeted the church Then he went down to Antioch.
23AND HAVING STAYED TIME SOME HE WENT FORTH PASSING THROUGH SUCCESSIVELY THE GALATIAN REGION AND PHRYGIA, STRENGTHENING ALL THE DISCIPLES. Paul’s Third Missionary Journey Begins (Acts 13:1–3; Acts 15:36–41) 23After Paul had spent some time in Antioch, he traveled from place to place throughout the region of Galatia and Phrygia, strengthening all the disciples.
24A JEW NOW CERTAIN APOLLOS NAMED, OF ALEXANDRIA <THE> A NATIVE, A MAN ELOQUENT, CAME TO EPHESUS MIGHTY BEING IN THE SCRIPTURES. 24Meanwhile a Jew named Apollos, a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus. He was an eloquent man, well versed in the Scriptures.
25HE WAS INSTRUCTED [IN] THE WAY OF THE LORD, AND BEING FERVENT <THE> IN SPIRIT HE WAS SPEAKING AND HE WAS TEACHING EARNESTLY THE [THINGS] CONCERNING <THE> JESUS KNOWING ONLY THE BAPTISM OF JOHN; 25He had been instructed in the way of the Lord and was fervent in spirit. He spoke and taught accurately about Jesus,*NoteCloseBYZ and TR about the Lord though he knew only the baptism of John.
26HE THEN BEGAN TO SPEAK BOLDLY IN THE SYNAGOGUE. HAVING HEARD HOWEVER HIM PRISCILLA AND AQUILA THEY TOOK TO [THEM] HIM AND MORE ACCURATELY TO HIM THEY EXPOUNDED THE WAY <THE> OF GOD. 26And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Priscilla and Aquila heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately.
27WHEN IS RESOLVING THEN HE TO PASS THROUGH INTO <THE> ACHAIA, HAVING ENCOURAGED [HIM] THE BROTHERS WROTE TO THE DISCIPLES TO WELCOME HIM; WHO HAVING ARRIVED HE HELPED GREATLY THOSE HAVING BELIEVED THROUGH <THE> GRACE; 27When Apollos resolved to cross over to Achaia, the brothers encouraged him and wrote to the disciples there to welcome him. On his arrival, he was a great help to those who by grace had believed.
28POWERFULLY FOR THE JEWS HE WAS REFUTING PUBLICLY SHOWING THROUGH THE SCRIPTURES TO BE THE CHRIST JESUS. 28For he powerfully refuted the Jews in public debate, proving from the Scriptures that Jesus is the Christ.
