46AND YOU REMAINED AT KADESH DAYS MANY LIKE THE DAYS WHICH YOU REMAINED 46For this reason you stayed in Kadesh for a long time— a very long time.
1AND WE TURNED AND WE SET OUT THE WILDERNESS TOWARDS [THE] WAY OF [THE] SEA OF REED[S] JUST AS HE HAD SPOKEN YAHWEH TO ME AND WE WENT AROUND <OBJ.> [THE] HILL COUNTRY OF SEIR DAYS MANY Wanderings in the Wilderness 1Then we turned back and headed for the wilderness by way of the Red Sea,*NoteCloseOr the Sea of Reeds as the LORD had instructed me, and for many days we wandered around Mount Seir.
3[IS] ENOUGH FOR YOU GOING ROUND <OBJ.> THE HILL COUNTRY <THE> THIS TURN <FOR> YOURSELVES NORTH -WARD 3“You have been wandering around this hill country long enough turn to the north
4AND <OBJ.> THE PEOPLE COMMAND <TO> SAYING YOU [ARE] ABOUT TO PASS IN [THE] TERRITORY OF RELATIVES YOUR [THE] DESCENDANTS OF ESAU WHO DWELL IN SEIR SO THEY MAY BE AFRAID FROM YOU AND YOU WILL TAKE HEED EXCEEDINGLY 4and command the people: ‘You will pass through the territory of your brothers, the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. They will be afraid of you, so you must be very careful.
5MAY NOT YOU ENGAGE IN STRIFE WITH THEM FOR NOT I WILL GIVE TO YOU ANY OF LAND THEIR UP TO A TREADING PLACE OF [THE] SOLE OF A FOOT FOR A POSSESSION TO ESAU I HAVE GIVEN <OBJ.> [THE] HILL COUNTRY OF SEIR 5Do not provoke them, for I will not give you any of their land, not even a footprint because I have given Mount Seir to Esau as his possession.
6FOOD YOU WILL BUY FROM WITH THEM FOR <THE> SILVER AND YOU WILL EAT AND ALSO WATER YOU WILL BUY FROM WITH THEM FOR <THE> SILVER AND YOU WILL DRINK 6You are to pay them in silver for the food you eat and the water you drink.’”
7FOR YAHWEH GOD YOUR HE HAS BLESSED YOU IN ALL [THE] WORK OF HAND YOUR HE HAS KNOWN WALKING YOU <OBJ.> THE WILDERNESS <THE> GREAT <THE> THIS THIS FORTY YEAR[S] YAHWEH GOD YOUR [HAS BEEN] WITH YOU NOT YOU HAVE LACKED ANYTHING 7Indeed, the LORD your God has blessed you in all the work of your hands. He has watched over your journey through this vast wilderness. The LORD your God has been with you these forty years, and you have lacked nothing.
8AND WE PASSED AWAY FROM WITH RELATIVES OUR [THE] DESCENDANTS OF ESAU WHO WERE DWELLING IN SEIR FROM [THE] WAY OF THE DESERT PLAIN FROM ELATH AND FROM EZION GEBER AND WE TURNED AND WE PASSED ALONG [THE] WAY OF [THE] WILDERNESS OF MOAB 8So we passed by our brothers, the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. We turned away from the Arabah road, which comes up from Elath and Ezion-geber, and traveled along the road of the Wilderness of Moab.
9AND HE SAID YAHWEH TO ME TO YOU MAY PROVOKE <OBJ.> MOAB AND MAY NOT YOU ENGAGE IN STRIFE WITH THEM BATTLE FOR NOT I WILL GIVE TO YOU ANY OF LAND HIS A POSSESSION FOR TO [THE] DESCENDANTS OF LOT I HAVE GIVEN <OBJ.> AR A POSSESSION 9Then the LORD said to me, “Do not harass the Moabites or provoke them to war, for I will not give you any of their land because I have given Ar to the descendants of Lot as their possession.”
10THE EMITES <TO> BEFORE THEY DWELT IN IT A PEOPLE GREAT AND NUMEROUS AND LOFTY LIKE THE ANAKITES 10(The Emites used to live there, a people great and many, as tall as the Anakites.
11REPHAITES THEY WERE REGARDED ALSO THEY LIKE THE ANAKITES AND THE MOABITES THEY CALLED <TO> THEM EMITES 11Like the Anakites, they were also regarded as Rephaim, though the Moabites called them Emites.
12AND IN SEIR THEY DWELT THE HORITES <TO> BEFORE AND [THE] DESCENDANTS OF ESAU THEY DISPOSSESSED THEM AND THEY DESTROYED THEM FROM BEFORE THEM AND THEY DWELT IN PLACE OF THEM JUST AS IT DID ISRAEL TO [THE] LAND OF POSSESSION ITS WHICH HE GAVE YAHWEH TO THEM 12The Horites used to live in Seir, but the descendants of Esau drove them out. They destroyed the Horites from before them and settled in their place, just as Israel did in the land that the LORD gave them as their possession.)
13NOW ARISE AND PASS OVER <FOR> YOURSELVES <OBJ.> [THE] WADI OF ZERED AND WE PASSED OVER <OBJ.> [THE] WADI OF ZERED 13“Now arise and cross over the Brook of Zered.” So we crossed over the Brook of Zered.
14AND THE DAYS WHICH WE WALKED FROM KADESH BARNEA UNTIL THAT WE PASSED OVER <OBJ.> [THE] WADI OF ZERED [WERE] THIRTY AND EIGHT YEAR[S] UNTIL WAS FINISHED ALL THE GENERATION [THE] MEN OF <THE> WAR FROM [THE] MIDST OF THE CAMP JUST AS HE HAD SWORN YAHWEH TO THEM 14The time we spent traveling from Kadesh-barnea until we crossed over the Brook of Zered was thirty-eight years, until that entire generation of fighting men had perished from the camp, as the LORD had sworn to them.
15AND ALSO [THE] HAND OF YAHWEH IT WAS ON THEM TO DISTURB THEM FROM [THE] MIDST OF THE CAMP UNTIL WERE FINISHED THEY 15Indeed, the LORD’s hand was against them, to eliminate them from the camp, until they had all perished.
16AND IT WAS JUST WHEN THEY HAD FINISHED ALL [THE] MEN OF <THE> WAR TO DIE FROM [THE] MIDST OF THE PEOPLE 16Now when all the fighting men among the people had died,
18YOU [ARE] ABOUT TO PASS OVER THIS DAY <OBJ.> [THE] BORDER OF MOAB <OBJ.> AR 18“Today you are going to cross the border of Moab at Ar.
19AND YOU WILL DRAW NEAR IN FRONT OF [THE] PEOPLE OF AMMON MAY NOT YOU PROVOKE THEM AND MAY NOT YOU ENGAGE IN STRIFE WITH THEM FOR NOT I WILL GIVE ANY OF [THE] LAND OF [THE] PEOPLE OF AMMON TO YOU A POSSESSION FOR TO [THE] DESCENDANTS OF LOT I HAVE GIVEN IT A POSSESSION 19But when you get close to the Ammonites, do not harass them or provoke them, for I will not give you any of the land of the Ammonites I have given it to the descendants of Lot as their possession.”
20[THE] LAND OF [THE] REPHAITES IT WAS REGARDED ALSO IT [THE] REPHAITES THEY DWELT IN IT <TO> BEFORE AND THE AMMONITES THEY CALLED <TO> THEM ZAMZUMMITES 20(That too was regarded as the land of the Rephaim, who used to live there, though the Ammonites called them Zamzummites.
21A PEOPLE GREAT AND NUMEROUS AND LOFTY LIKE THE ANAKITES AND HE DESTROYED THEM YAHWEH FROM BEFORE THEM AND THEY DISPOSSESSED THEM AND THEY DWELT IN PLACE OF THEM 21They were a people great and many, as tall as the Anakites. But the LORD destroyed them from before the Ammonites, who drove them out and settled in their place,
22JUST AS HE HAD DONE FOR [THE] DESCENDANTS OF ESAU WHO WERE DWELLING IN SEIR WHOM HE DESTROYED <OBJ.> THE HORITE[S] FROM BEFORE THEM AND THEY DISPOSSESSED THEM AND THEY HAVE DWELT IN PLACE OF THEM UNTIL THE DAY <THE> THIS 22just as He had done for the descendants of Esau who lived in Seir, when He destroyed the Horites from before them. They drove them out and have lived in their place to this day.
23AND THE AVVITES WHO WERE DWELLING IN VILLAGES TO GAZA [THE] CAPHTORITES WHO CAME FORTH FROM CAPHTOR THEY DESTROYED THEM AND THEY DWELT IN PLACE OF THEM 23And the Avvim, who lived in villages as far as Gaza, were destroyed by the Caphtorites, who came out of Caphtor*NoteCloseThat is, Crete and settled in their place.)
24ARISE SET OUT AND PASS OVER <OBJ.> [THE] WADI OF ARNON SEE I GIVE IN HAND YOUR <OBJ.> SIHON [THE] KING OF HESHBON THE AMORITE AND <OBJ.> LAND HIS BEGIN TAKE POSSESSION OF [IT] AND ENGAGE IN STRIFE WITH HIM BATTLE The Defeat of Sihon (Numbers 21:21–30) 24“Arise, set out, and cross the Arnon Valley. See, I have delivered into your hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land. Begin to take possession of it and engage him in battle.
25THE DAY <THE> THIS I WILL BEGIN TO PUT DREAD YOUR AND FEAR YOUR ON [THE] FACE OF THE PEOPLES UNDER ALL THE HEAVENS WHO THEY WILL HEAR! REPORT YOUR AND THEY WILL TREMBLE AND THEY WILL BE IN ANGUISH <FROM> BECAUSE OF YOU 25This very day I will begin to put the dread and fear of you upon all the nations under heaven. They will hear the reports of you and tremble in anguish because of you.”
26AND I SENT MESSENGERS FROM [THE] WILDERNESS OF KEDEMOTH TO SIHON [THE] KING OF HESHBON WORDS OF PEACE <TO> SAYING 26So from the Wilderness of Kedemoth I sent messengers with an offer of peace to Sihon king of Heshbon, saying,
27LET ME PASS IN LAND YOUR ON THE ROAD ON THE ROAD I WILL GO NOT I WILL TURN ASIDE RIGHT [HAND] AND LEFT [HAND] 27“Let us pass through your land; we will stay on the main road. We will not turn to the right or to the left.
28FOOD FOR <THE> SILVER YOU WILL SELL ME AND I WILL EAT AND WATER FOR <THE> SILVER YOU WILL GIVE TO ME AND I WILL DRINK ONLY LET ME PASS THROUGH ON FEET MY 28You can sell us food to eat and water to drink in exchange for silver. Only let us pass through on foot,
29JUST AS THEY DID FOR ME [THE] DESCENDANTS OF ESAU WHO DWELL IN SEIR AND THE MOABITES WHO DWELL IN AR UNTIL THAT I WILL PASS OVER <OBJ.> THE JORDAN INTO THE LAND WHICH YAHWEH GOD OUR [IS] ABOUT TO GIVE TO US 29just as the descendants of Esau who live in Seir and the Moabites who live in Ar did for us until we cross the Jordan into the land that the LORD our God is giving us.”
30AND NOT HE WAS WILLING SIHON [THE] KING OF HESHBON TO LET PASS US IN HIM FOR HE HAD MADE STUBBORN YAHWEH GOD YOUR <OBJ.> SPIRIT HIS AND HE HAD MADE OBSTINATE <OBJ.> HEART HIS SO AS TO GIVE HIM IN HAND YOUR AS THE DAY <THE> THIS 30But Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass through, for the LORD your God had made his spirit stubborn and his heart obstinate, that He might deliver him into your hand, as is the case this day.
31AND HE SAID YAHWEH TO ME SEE I HAVE BEGUN TO DELIVER UP <TO> BEFORE YOU <OBJ.> SIHON AND <OBJ.> LAND HIS BEGIN TAKE POSSESSION TO TAKE POSSESSION OF <OBJ.> LAND HIS 31Then the LORD said to me, “See, I have begun to deliver Sihon and his land over to you. Now begin to conquer and possess his land.”
32AND HE CAME FORTH SIHON TO MEET US HE AND ALL PEOPLE HIS FOR <THE> BATTLE JAHAZ TOWARDS 32So Sihon and his whole army came out for battle against us at Jahaz.
33AND HE DELIVERED UP HIM YAHWEH GOD OUR <TO> BEFORE US AND WE STRUCK DOWN <OBJ.> HIM AND <OBJ.> SONS HIS AND <OBJ.> ALL PEOPLE HIS 33And the LORD our God delivered him over to us, and we defeated him and his sons and his whole army.
34AND WE CAPTURED <OBJ.> ALL CITIES HIS AT THE TIME <THE> THAT AND WE TOTALLY DESTROYED <OBJ.> EVERY CITY OF MEN AND THE WOMEN AND THE LITTLE ONE[S] NOT WE SPARED A SURVIVOR 34At that time we captured all his cities and devoted to destruction*NoteCloseForms of the Hebrew cherem refer to the giving over of things or persons to the LORD, either by destroying them or by giving them as an offering. the people of every city, including women and children. We left no survivors.
35ONLY THE LIVESTOCK WE PLUNDERED FOR OURSELVES AND [THE] BOOTY OF THE CITIES WHICH WE HAD CAPTURED 35We carried off for ourselves only the livestock and the plunder from the cities we captured.
36FROM AROER WHICH [IS] ON [THE] EDGE OF [THE] WADI OF ARNON AND THE CITY WHICH [IS] IN THE WADI AND TO <THE> GILEAD NOT IT WAS A TOWN WHICH IT WAS [TOO] HIGH FOR US <OBJ.> <THE> EVERY ONE HE DELIVERED UP YAHWEH GOD OUR <TO> BEFORE US 36From Aroer on the rim of the Arnon Valley, along with the city in the valley, even as far as Gilead, not one city had walls too high for us. The LORD our God gave us all of them.
37ONLY TO [THE] LAND OF [THE] PEOPLE OF AMMON NOT YOU DREW NEAR ALL [THE] SIDE OF [THE] WADI OF JABBOK AND [THE] CITIES OF THE HILL COUNTRY AND ALL THAT HE HAD COMMANDED YAHWEH GOD OUR 37But you did not go near the land of the Ammonites, or the land along the banks of the Jabbok River, or the cities of the hill country, or any place that the LORD our God had forbidden.
