37ONLY TO [THE] LAND OF [THE] PEOPLE OF AMMON NOT YOU DREW NEAR ALL [THE] SIDE OF [THE] WADI OF JABBOK AND [THE] CITIES OF THE HILL COUNTRY AND ALL THAT HE HAD COMMANDED YAHWEH GOD OUR 37But you did not go near the land of the Ammonites, or the land along the banks of the Jabbok River, or the cities of the hill country, or any place that the LORD our God had forbidden.
1AND WE TURNED AND WE WENT UP [THE] WAY OF <THE> BASHAN AND HE CAME FORTH OG [THE] KING OF <THE> BASHAN TO MEET US HE AND ALL PEOPLE HIS FOR <THE> BATTLE EDREI The Defeat of Og (Numbers 21:31–35) 1Then we turned and went up the road to Bashan, and Og king of Bashan and his whole army came out to meet us in battle at Edrei.
2AND HE SAID YAHWEH TO ME MAY NOT YOU FEAR <OBJ.> HIM FOR IN HAND YOUR I GIVE <OBJ.> HIM AND <OBJ.> ALL PEOPLE HIS AND <OBJ.> LAND HIS AND YOU WILL DO TO HIM JUST AS YOU DID TO SIHON [THE] KING OF THE AMORITE[S] WHO [WAS] DWELLING IN HESHBON 2But the LORD said to me, “Do not fear him, for I have delivered him into your hand, along with all his people and his land. Do to him as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon.”
3AND HE GAVE YAHWEH GOD OUR IN HAND OUR ALSO <OBJ.> OG [THE] KING OF <THE> BASHAN AND <OBJ.> ALL PEOPLE HIS AND WE STRUCK DOWN HIM UNTIL NOT HE HAD LEFT TO HIM A SURVIVOR 3So the LORD our God also delivered Og king of Bashan and his whole army into our hands. We struck them down until no survivor was left.
4AND WE CAPTURED <OBJ.> ALL CITIES HIS AT THE TIME <THE> THAT NOT IT WAS A TOWN WHICH NOT WE TOOK FROM WITH <THE> THEM SIXTY CITI[ES] ALL [THE] REGION OF ARGOB [THE] KINGDOM OF OG IN <THE> BASHAN 4At that time we captured all sixty of his cities. There was not a single city we failed to take the entire region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan.
5ALL THESE [WERE] CITIES FORTIFIED WALL HIGH GATES AND BAR[S] <TO> APART FROM [THE] CITIES OF THE HAMLET-DWELLER[S] MANY VERY 5All these cities were fortified with high walls and gates and bars, and there were many more unwalled villages.
6AND WE TOTALLY DESTROYED <OBJ.> THEM JUST AS WE HAD DONE TO SIHON [THE] KING OF HESHBON WE TOTALLY DESTROYED EVERY CITY OF MEN THE WOMEN AND THE LITTLE ONE[S] 6We devoted them to destruction*NoteCloseForms of the Hebrew cherem refer to the giving over of things or persons to the LORD, either by destroying them or by giving them as an offering. as we had done to Sihon king of Heshbon, utterly destroying the men, women, and children of every city.
7AND ALL THE LIVESTOCK AND [THE] BOOTY OF THE CITIES WE PLUNDERED FOR OURSELVES 7But all the livestock and plunder of the cities we carried off for ourselves.
8AND WE TOOK AT THE TIME <THE> THAT <OBJ.> THE LAND FROM [THE] HAND OF [THE] TWO [THE] KINGS OF THE AMORITE[S] WHO [WERE] ON [THE] OTHER SIDE OF THE JORDAN FROM [THE] WADI OF ARNON TO [THE] MOUNTAIN OF HERMON 8At that time we took from the two kings of the Amorites the land across the Jordan, from the Arnon Valley as far as Mount Hermon—
9[THE] SIDONIANS THEY CALL <TO> HERMON SIRION AND THE AMORITE[S] THEY CALL <TO> IT SENIR 9which the Sidonians call Sirion but the Amorites call Senir—
10ALL [THE] CITIES OF THE PLAIN AND ALL <THE> GILEAD AND ALL <THE> BASHAN TO SALECAH AND EDREI [THE] CITIES OF [THE] KINGDOM OF OG IN <THE> BASHAN 10all the cities of the plateau, all of Gilead, and all of Bashan as far as the cities of Salecah and Edrei in the kingdom of Og.
11FOR ONLY OG [THE] KING OF <THE> BASHAN HE SURVIVED FROM [THE] REMNANT OF THE REPHAITES THERE! To the Reubenites and Gadites I gave the land beyond Aroer along the Arnon Valley, and half the hill country of Gilead, along with its cities.
13AND [THE] REMAINDER OF <THE> GILEAD AND ALL <THE> BASHAN [THE] KINGDOM OF OG I GAVE TO [THE] HALF OF [THE] TRIBE OF <THE> MANASSEH ALL [THE] REGION OF <THE> ARGOB TO ALL <THE> BASHAN <THE> IT IT WAS CALLED [THE] LAND OF [THE] REPHAITES 13To the half-tribe of Manasseh I gave the rest of Gilead and all of Bashan, the kingdom of Og. (The entire region of Argob, the whole territory of Bashan, used to be called the land of the Rephaim.)
14JAIR [THE] SON OF MANASSEH HE TOOK <OBJ.> ALL [THE] REGION OF ARGOB TO [THE] BORDER OF THE GESHURITE[S] AND THE MAACATHITE[S] AND HE CALLED <OBJ.> THEM ON OWN NAME HIS <OBJ.> <THE> BASHAN [THE] VILLAGES OF JAIR UNTIL THE DAY <THE> THIS 14Jair, a descendant of Manasseh, took the whole region of Argob as far as the border of the Geshurites and Maacathites. He renamed Bashan after himself, Havvoth-jair,*NoteCloseOr the villages of Jair by which it is called to this day.
16AND TO THE REUBENITE[S] AND TO THE GADITE[S] I GAVE FROM <THE> GILEAD AND TO [THE] WADI OF ARNON [THE] MIDDLE OF THE WADI AND A BORDER AND TO JABBOK THE WADI [IS] [THE] BORDER OF [THE] PEOPLE OF AMMON 16and to the Reubenites and Gadites I gave the territory from Gilead to the Arnon Valley (the middle of the valley was the border) and up to the Jabbok River, the border of the Ammonites.
17AND THE ARABAH AND THE JORDAN AND A BORDER FROM KINNERETH AND TO [THE] SEA OF THE ARABAH [THE] SEA OF <THE> SALT UNDER [THE] SLOPES OF <THE> PISGAH EAST -WARD 17The Jordan River in the Arabah bordered it from Chinnereth to the Sea of the Arabah (the Salt Sea*NoteCloseThat is, the Dead Sea) with the slopes of Pisgah to the east.
18AND I COMMANDED <OBJ.> YOU AT THE TIME <THE> THAT <TO> SAYING YAHWEH GOD YOUR HE HAS GIVEN TO YOU <OBJ.> THE LAND <THE> THIS TO TAKE POSSESSION OF IT EQUIPPED YOU WILL PASS OVER <TO> BEFORE COUNTRYMEN YOUR [THE] PEOPLE OF ISRAEL O ALL [THE] SONS OF STRENGTH 18At that time I commanded you: “The LORD your God has given you this land to possess. All your men of valor are to cross over, armed for battle, ahead of your brothers, the Israelites.
19ONLY WIVES YOUR AND LITTLE ONE[S] YOUR AND LIVESTOCK YOUR I KNOW THAT LIVESTOCK MUCH [BELONGS] TO YOU THEY WILL REMAIN IN CITIES YOUR WHICH I HAVE GIVEN TO YOU 19But your wives, your children, and your livestock— I know that you have much livestock— may remain in the cities I have given you,
20UNTIL THAT HE WILL GIVE REST YAHWEH TO COUNTRYMEN YOUR LIKE YOU AND THEY WILL TAKE POSSESSION OF ALSO THEY <OBJ.> THE LAND WHICH YAHWEH GOD YOUR [IS] ABOUT TO GIVE TO THEM ON [THE] OTHER SIDE OF THE JORDAN AND YOU WILL RETURN EVERYONE TO POSSESSION HIS WHICH I HAVE GIVEN TO YOU 20until the LORD gives rest to your brothers as He has to you, and they too have taken possession of the land that the LORD your God is giving them across the Jordan. Then each of you may return to the possession I have given you.”
21AND <OBJ.> JOSHUA I COMMANDED AT THE TIME <THE> THAT <TO> SAYING EYES YOUR [ARE] THE [ONES WHICH] HAVE SEEN <OBJ.> ALL THAT HE DID YAHWEH GOD YOUR TO [THE] TWO THE KINGS <THE> THESE THUS HE WILL DO YAHWEH TO ALL THE KINGDOMS WHERE YOU [ARE] ABOUT TO PASS OVER THERE <TOWARDS> 21And at that time I commanded Joshua: “Your own eyes have seen all that the LORD your God has done to these two kings. The LORD will do the same to all the kingdoms you are about to enter.
22NOT YOU MUST FEAR THEM FOR YAHWEH GOD YOUR HE [IS] THE [ONE WHO] WILL FIGHT FOR YOU 22Do not be afraid of them, for the LORD your God Himself will fight for you.”
23AND I SOUGHT FAVOR TO YAHWEH AT THE TIME <THE> THAT <TO> SAYING Moses Forbidden to Cross the Jordan (Numbers 27:12–17) 23At that time I also pleaded with the LORD:
24O LORD YAHWEH YOU YOU HAVE BEGUN TO SHOW <OBJ.> SERVANT YOUR <OBJ.> GREATNESS YOUR AND <OBJ.> HAND YOUR <THE> STRONG THAT WHO? [IS] GOD IN THE HEAVENS AND ON THE EARTH WHO HE WILL DO LIKE WORKS YOUR AND LIKE MIGHTY DEEDS YOUR 24“O Lord GOD, You have begun to show Your greatness and power to Your servant. For what god in heaven or on earth can perform such works and mighty acts as Yours?
25LET ME PASS OVER PLEASE SO I MAY SEE <OBJ.> THE LAND <THE> GOOD WHICH [IS] ON [THE] OTHER SIDE OF THE JORDAN THE HILL COUNTRY <THE> GOOD <THE> THIS AND <THE> LEBANON 25Please let me cross over and see the good land beyond the Jordan— that pleasant hill country as well as Lebanon!”
26AND HE WAS FURIOUS YAHWEH WITH ME ON ACCOUNT OF YOU AND NOT HE LISTENED TO ME AND HE SAID YAHWEH TO ME ENOUGH FOR YOU MAY NOT YOU REPEAT TO SPEAK TO ME AGAIN IN THE MATTER <THE> THIS 26But the LORD was angry with me on account of you, and He would not listen to me. “That is enough,” the LORD said to me “Do not speak to Me again about this matter.
27GO UP [THE] TOP OF <THE> PISGAH AND LIFT UP EYES YOUR WEST -WARD AND NORTH -WARD AND SOUTH -WARD AND EAST -WARD AND SEE WITH OWN EYES YOUR THAT NOT YOU WILL PASS OVER <OBJ.> THE JORDAN <THE> THIS 27Go to the top of Pisgah and look to the west and north and south and east. See the land with your own eyes, for you will not cross this Jordan.
28AND COMMISSION <OBJ.> JOSHUA AND ENCOURAGE HIM AND STRENGTHEN HIM FOR HE HE WILL PASS OVER <TO> BEFORE THE PEOPLE <THE> THIS AND HE HE WILL GIVE AS AN INHERITANCE <OBJ.> THEM <OBJ.> THE LAND WHICH YOU WILL SEE 28But commission Joshua, encourage him, and strengthen him, for he will cross over ahead of the people and enable them to inherit the land that you will see.”
29AND WE REMAINED IN THE VALLEY OPPOSITE TO BETH PEOR 29So we stayed in the valley opposite Beth-peor.
